Frequent Spinning Pinwheel...error in Console

For the last few months, I have been having sluggish performance and get the "Pinwheel" frequently. I opened up "Console" so I could hopefully see what was causing the hang up. The found this message repeated over and over:
2007-08-07 20:46:02.463 SyndicationAgent[703] WARNING:
BestCalendarDateFromString - can't interpret: 'Tue 07 Aug 2007 17:41:50 -800'
Anyone know what this is and how to repair it?
I have tried all the usual stuff...run Disk Utility, ran all the cron jobs, zapped PRAM, etc...no dice. It's so bad that in iTunes the music is all broken up sometimes. Help!

Ran Rember, and everything passed with flying colors...so the memory is not an issue. After a little more testing, it seems to be hanging up any time a request is made of the Airport Extreme. Going to a webpage or checking mail. I have wantched network traffic and haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.
I am also wondering if it could have something to do with the two firewire HD's I have attached.
At this point I am stuck. It's strange, because it seems to happen randomly. Sometimes it's fine, others it just hangs up. Same on my wife's side as well.

This obviously points to the Nvidia drivers crashing, but why? I'm currently using an Nvidia GTX 460 768MB in my Mac Pro, and I've never had this problem with any other applications. It seems to only be Bridge.

And you are assuming that the 460 will be supported of course which is not a given. The 570 and 670 seems to be okay and some use GTX 4xx but they also realized it can be iffy for support.

My pointer keeps turning into a colorful spinning pinwheel. Mac OS X(10.5.8) using a wireless mouse and keyboard ,desktop computer.

The spinning wait cursor (or "beachball") generally means there's some problem that's causing the current app to freeze, or slowing down the current application, or that's slowing down the whole system.
Here's an overview of the spinning wait cursor.
Make a backup first, using the Disk Utility tool booted from your installation DVD to external storage.  This backup to ensure you still have access to your most current and complete data, shut this be a problem with your hardware.
Then use Utilities > Activity Monitor.app and the Utilities > Console.app tools to see what's going on, and whether there are related errors being logged.
There are some general troubleshooting articles around, too.

  • Spinning pinwheel brings Mail to a temporary but regular halt after Yosemite upgrade

I updated to Yosemite on October 19 and didn't encounter any major problems. But beginning four or five days ago, I'm now getting frequent, regular appearances of the spinning pinwheel when viewing or typing Mail messages. When this happens, Mail ceases to function until the pinwheel disappears. I cannot move, open, close, delete, type, or do anything in Mail for ten to fifteen seconds at a time. I'm trying to detect a pattern of when this occurs, but so far I haven't found one. I have made no other changes to my system in this time and I never experienced this before using Yosemite.
Needless to say, this makes doing anything in Mail extremely tedious. I have an iCloud account, several Earthlink (POP) accounts, and one Exchange account. This seems to mostly affect messages on the Exchange account (which also, coincidentally or not, now take a very long time to load, especially if they include attachments of any size). I have quit and restarted Mail multiple times and shut down and restarted the computer multiple times but the problem persists. I have a 500 GM hard drive with more than 180 GB free and 16 GB of RAM, so why the Mac needs to be search so often and so long for something is a puzzle..
Has anyone else run into this phenomena and is there a way to make it stop?

I would first do the following 3 items before anymore drastic things:
    1. use disk utilities to repair permissions
    2. Do SMC reset
    3. Do PRAM reset
then if no change look at other possibilities that I'm sure someone in this discussion will suggest.

  • Why is the spinning pinwheel showing up so much?

I cleared out my cache folders from Premire Pro and Encore recently.  Now when ever I'm in Photoshop I am consistently getting the spinning pinwheel on very simple edits.
Example, I open a very small JPG, and add a box to it.  Just dragging the box, I will get a spinning pinwheel.  I don't get it on any other applications.
    Thoughts?

As explained by Jeff Schewe, 8GB of RAM is fine for Photoshop provided you have no other applications running.
That was a gross oversimplification which may be true when retouching and adjusting 30 megapixel images. 8 GB RAM can be far more than is needed or far less than is needed at any given time, depending on the size of documents, tools/features being used, the number of history states being maintained, etc, etc, etc.
I have only 8 GB RAM, yet sometimes I will simultaneously run, and be frequently switching between, Photoshop, Illustrator, Cinema 4D and a bunch of multi-tab Safari windows and never see a spinning beachball for hours.
At other times I may have only Photoshop open, and with a single document, and there will be frequent and lengthy periods of spinning beachball.

My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
    Thanks for the help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Spinning pinwheel destroying my sanity

I have an iBook, about 5 years old but with a new hardrive, and I'm having trouble booting up. The computer starts up fine--goes to the desktop image with all my folders in sight--but when I try to do anything (open a folder, say), I get the dreaded progress indicator, or spinning pinwheel. I've run Techtool Deluxe and everything checks out fine. Does anyone have any clues as to how to fix this problem. As it stands now, I can't use the computer at all.
    Thanks!

    You're Welcome danielbrian77!
Start with Repair Disk & Repair Permissions. Instructions posted below. Post the outcome.
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only messages reported are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

  • Spinning pinwheel in itunes after importing

    Hello all!
I am using a 15inch Powerbook G4(1.67ghz, 2GB ram) and itunes v.10.6.3(25) to store and play all my music. That is basically all the Powerbook is used for. I recently erased and reloaded my library( roughly 1.2TB) and since then, I get the spinning pinwheel whenever I try to do pretty much anything in itunes. All other applications run fine, it seems to be isolated to itunes.
I have my music stored on a 3TB LaCie external drive.
I have repaired permissions, and that did not fix the problem.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

For one of the problem files, right-click it and choose Open With > iTunes.
If the file is compatible, it will start playing and be added to the library.
If iTunes "errors silently" (i.e. does nothing) it means the file is incompatible.  If you are sure it is a valid MP3, treat it with a 3rd party tag cleanup program such as Mp3Val.  That usually suffices to make iTunes happy.

  • Macbook Won't Boot, Stuck at Logo + Spinning Pinwheel

So I was on firefox, it froze. I closed the computer thinking I'll just deal with this later. When I open it the screen is one but nothing shows. So I turn it off & restart it. All I keep getting is the apple logo + spinning pinwheel. Tried turning it on & off countless times, but that didn't work. Not sure what to do.
I have tried to boot in safe mode and that didn't work. I tried to repair disk permissions & such and I kept getting the error message that it couldn't be performed because the disk is unmountable. I also reseted the pram and that didn't help. I also went into the comman line & did /sbin/fsck -fy. I did that maybe 4-5 times, then rebooted and still same problem.
Do you guys have any suggestions? I am contemplating an archice & install of os x. What do you guys think I should do or what is the problem?

Hey DLo650, did you ever get an answer or find a solution to this problem. I have a MacBook Pro that is exhibiting the same issues as you had. I rebuilt the hard drive and went so far as buying a whole new hard drive and installing the OS 10.6 disk from another machine to that new hard drive but to no avail, it still doesn't work. I suspect its some hardware issue but I haven't found the solution yet. Any help from your end would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • The spinning pinwheel on my Imac

The spinning pinwheel on my Imac constantly causes delays when using the machine. The hard drive has been replaced and the system scanned with MacKeeper showing no problems. Any ideas?

Remove Mackeeper at once!  As has been covered in these Forums repeatedly, Mackeeper is essentially a Malware posing as a useful utility, that when installed slows the system down and acts in a negative way on overall system performance.  And you will have to Google HOW to remove it because its Developers cunningly made it Very difficult to get rid of.  (Feel free to do a search on "Mackeeper" in this Forum for confirmation of what I'm saying by other advanced users.)

  • Netflix website and Spinning Pinwheel

Just curious to know if anyone else has this problem...
Everytime I open up the Netflix website on my Mac, the website takes forever to load and I usually end up getting the Spinning pinwheel icon.
Is there anyway to correct this?

I have BrightHouse's Lightening service as well (oddly enough, mine is 60Gbps download). If you're using the Motorola modem/router that BrightHouse supplies, that may be your problem. I've chosen to use the modem/router as a bridge to my AirPort Extreme (5th Gen) and have no problems.
Are you using the Motorola modem/router as a router? Try disconnecting it from power for about 10 minutes and then plugging it back up and let it reboot.
