Frequent timeouts and poor performance

Hello,
Starting this morning I'm experiencing a lot of timeouts and performance issues with my SQL Azure DB (located in West US), causing several Azure hosted services to fail. I've checked everything I can think of and it nothing shows a clear problem with our
databases. I'm not seeing anything on the dashboard, but can't help but wonder if there is an issue going on that hasn't been detected.
Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this issue?
Thanks,
-Fabio

Hi Fabio,
I work on the Cotega monitoring service for SQL Azure and I can also confirm that we saw a few customer who we notified of performance issues with SQL Azure as well.
Now that I write this, I am wondering if it might be worth adding to the service a page that lets anyone see the historical performance of SQL Azure based on aggregated data from all of the customers databases that we currently monitor.  I wonder if
that would be useful for situations like this?

Safari hangs and poor performance in MBPR (Mid 2012)? OS X 10.10.2 is up to date

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If the Downloads button (with the icon of a downward-pointing arrow) is showing in the toolbar, click it and then click Clear in the box that appears. The download history will be removed. Any change?
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select the Advanced tab in the Preferences window and uncheck the box marked
              Stop plug-ins to save power
    Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If Parental Controls is active for any user, please turn it off and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Follow the instructions in this support article. Any change?
Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Photos, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Invalid block count and poor performance

    Hi - Can anyone help?
Running an early 2011 13' MBP on ML. For a year - 18 months I've noticed poor performance at times, consistently slow boot (sometimes 5 minutes to usable), occasional lockups and spotlight often reindexes itself and slows the system (much more than my previous MBP), I can't see anything that triggers it. I'm also getting recurring errors in Disk Utility of 'Invalid block count', every time I'll repair the disk (booting into recovery), but after a month of use the error will reappear. About three months ago I erased and reinstalled ML, some of my data was moved over in Time Machine but I didn't restore from it. The erase and reinstall hasn't made any difference and I'm still seeing the same issues. Hard disk SMART status appears to be fine.
Can anyone recommend any troubleshooting steps? I'm not sure what else to do, still under Applecare and was thinking maybe the HD isn't working correctly?
    Cheers!

  • Crashing and poor performance during playback of a large project.

    Hi,
I've been a regular user of iMovie for about 3 years and have edited several 50GB+ projects of DV quality footage without too many major issues with lag or 'dropped frames'. I currently have a 80GB project that resides on a 95% full 320GB Firewire 400 external drive that has been getting very slow to open and near impossible to work with.
Pair the bursting-at-the-seams external drive, with an overburdened 90% full internal drive - the poor performance wasn't to be unexpected. So I bought a 1TB Firewire 400 drive to free up some space on my Mac. My large iTunes library (150GB) was the main culprit and it was quickly moved onto the new drive.
The iMovie project was then moved onto my Mac's movie folder - I figured that the project needs some "room" to work (not that I really understand how Macs use memory) and that having roughly 80GB free with 1.5GB RAM (which is more than used to have) would make everything just that much smoother.
    Wrong.
The project opened in roughly the same amount of time - but when I tried to play back the timeline, it plays like rubbish and then after 10-15 secs the Mac goes into 'sleep' mode. The screen goes off, the fans dies down and the 'heartbeat' light goes on. A click of the mouse 'wakes' the Mac only to find that if i try again, I get the same result.
I've probably got so many variables going on here that it's probably hard to suggest what the problem might be but all I could think of was repairing permissions (which I did and none needed it).
Stuck on this. Anyone have any advice?

I understand completely, having worked with a 100 GB project once. I found that getting a movie bloated up to that size was just more difficult with jerky playback.
I do have a couple of suggestions for you.
You may need more than that 80GB free space for this movie. Is there any reason you cannot move it to the 1TB drive? If you have only your iTunes on it, you should have about 800 GB free.
If you still need to have the project on your computer's drive, set your computer to never sleep.
How close to finishing editing are you with this movie? If you are nearly done except for adding audio clips, you can export (share) it as QuickTime Full Quality movie. The resultant quicktime version of your iMovie will be smaller because it will contain only the clips actually used in the movie, not all the saved whole clips that iMovie keeps as its nondestructive editing feature. The quicktime movie will be one continuous clip, incorporating all your edits and added audio. It CAN be further edited, but you cannot change text of titles already there, or change transitions or remove already added audios.
I actually do this with nearly every iMovie. I create my movies by first importing videos, then adding still photos, then editing with titles, effects and transitions. I add audio last, and if it becomes too distorted in playback, I export the movie and then continue adding audio clips.
My 100+ GB movie slimmed down to only 8 GB with this method. (The large size was due to having so many clips. The movie was from VHS footage of my son's little league all-star game, and the video had so many skipped segments that I had to split it into thousands of clips to remove the dropped ones. Very old VHS tape!).
I haven't upgraded to QT 7.5.5, but I heard that the jerky playback issue is mostly resolved with this new upgrade. I am in mid-project with about 5 iMovies, so I will probably plod along with my work-around method, not wanting to upgrade in the middle of any of them.
Hope this is helpful to you.

  • Skype crashing and poor performance

    Hello!
I have a Lumia625 with WP8.1. My problem is that Skype has a really poor performance on my phone. It crashes 6 times out of 10 on startup, and even if I manage to start it, the whole app is slow and laggy. Sometimes I can't even write a message it's so laggy. Video call is absolutely out of the question. It crashes my whole phone. I have no similar problems with other instant messaging apps nor with high-end games. There is something obviously using way more resource in the Skype app than it's supposed to. It's a simple chat program, why would it need so much resource?
The problem seems to be originating from the lower (512 mb) RAM size of my phone model, because I experienced the same effect with poorly written apps, that don't keep in mind that there are 512 RAM devices, not only 1GB+ ones, and use too much resource.
Please don't try to suggest to restart/reset the phone, and reinstall the app. Those are already behind me, and they did NOT help the problem. I'm not searching for temporary workarounds.
Please find a solution for this problem, because it is super annoying, and I can't use Skype, which will eventually result in me leaving Skype.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When it crashes on startup it goes like:
    I tap the skype tile
The black screen with the "Loading....." appears (default WP loading screen). Usually this takes longer than it would normally take on any other app.
For a blink of an eye the Skype gui appears, but it instantly crashes.
If I can successfully start up the app, it just keeps lagging. I sart to write a message to a contact, and sometimes even the letters don't appear as I touch them, but they appear much later altogether. If I tap the send message button the whole gui freezes (seems like it freezes till the contact gets my message). Sometimes the lag get stronger, and sometimes it almost vanishes, but if I keep making inputs when the lag is strong, sometimes it crashes the whole app.
When I first installed the app, everything was fine. But after a while this behavior appeared. I reinstalled the app, and it solved the problem temporarily, but after some time the problem re-appeared. I don't know if it's relevant, but there was a time when I couldn't make myself appear online all the time (when the app was not started). In that time I didn't experience the lags and crashes. Anyways, what I'm sure about is that the lags get worse with time. Idk if it's because of use of the app (caching?), or the updates the phone makes to itself (conflict?).
I will try to reinstall Skype. Probably it will fix it for now. I hope the problem won't appear again.

  • My solution for: Slow Installs and poor performance

So up until today, most of anyting on XP or even vista 64 ultimate was taking a very long time to install or copy from one part of the drive to another. Startup would grow longer and game performance was dying and only once ever did reinstalling the OS do anything. No matter what I did, nothing would fix the problem.
I ran multiple utilities (disk utility, disk warrior, tech tool deluxe, etc) but none said that there was a hardware problem. But this issue I was having (and I know some of you do) was definitely related to the computer. From my experience, I determined that there was no way this mac was perfect.
So I scheduled a service and repair at my apple store (under warranty). When it was done a few days later, sure enough, I was told that even though the utilities we users can use on our end to diagnose problems didn't find any problems, the hard drive did not pass apple's detailed inspection and was replaced.
In conclusion, I say that if you are having this problem, run disk utility and if you have the extra protection plan, download the Tech Tool Deluxe that apple provides on the support site. Disk utility may find some permission and disk issues but if Tech Tool doesnt find anything even on the surface scan, take it in to the apple store to have a Genius look at it. If it's not under warranty, it's up to you whether or not you want to spend that money. Overall, my computer both on Leopard and XP now runs just as it should.
    Hope that helps.

  • Frequent Broadband Resets and poor performance

I have tried everything on this forum to improve the reliability of my BT broadband connection. I am no at the end of the trail concerning alterations I can make to my internal configuration.
    My best configuration is now:
No internal extension wiring, no bell wire. The NTE master socket has an ADSL nation faceplate with inbuilt filters and the BT Home Hub 3 connected. I have BT graphite series remote phone set, with the answerphone plugged into the filtered faceplate.
There are no other connections in the house. All other wires and filters have been removed.
There has been progress made in that I now connect at 8 to 10 Mbs, but BT speedtest measures dowloads at 4-6mbs, even commenting that this is poor for my line speed. I now connect in fast mode not Interleave mode. The telphone still sometimes disconnects the broadband, but always causes errors resulting in blanking. • Extremely Slow Startup, Blue Screen, and Poor Performance

    Hello,
A couple of weeks ago my MBP 15" (late 2009 model) started performing really poorly. The colour wheel would spin for about 2 minutes if a launched any applications and everything was really slow. It also took about 10 minutes on the grey apple screen to startup and then another 10 or so on the blue screen before slowly revealiing my desktop.
I took it into the genius bar and the said it might be a corrupt file on the HD. Backed up my HD, zeroed the drive and reinstalled OS. Still the same problems. Ran disk utility several times and got various errors pertaining to HD or RAM.
Took it back into the Genius bar and they ran a long diagnostic on it, came back to me and said it is deifinatly the RAM. I replaced the ram, (2x2GB ddr3-1066 sodimm) and cleared PRam. Still the same startup and performance issues.
Any ideas would be appreciated as this is stressing me out big time as I dont know what else it could be?

Hmm... before this I think I would have restarted the computer in Safe Boot mode which deletes the dynamic-loader shared cache.
Not sure if it is relevant at this point
    Safe Boot
    # it forces a directory check of the startup volume.
    # It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
    # In Mac OS X v10.3.9 or earlier, Safe Mode runs only Apple-installed startup items (such items may be installed either in /Library/StartupItems or in /System/Library/StartupItems; these are different than user-selected account login items).
    # It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
    # It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
    # It disables all startup items and login items (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
    # Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later: A Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache at (/var/db/dyld/). A cache with issues may cause a blue screen on startup, particularly after a Software Update. Restarting normally recreates this cache.

Did you run the Apple Hardware Test. What is the S.M.A.R.T. status, could be that HD is failing?

  • Emac 9.2 freezing and poor performance

Need some new ideas. This computer is an emac Power PC G4 700 Mhz 640 MB (568 unused) running 9.2.2 We mostly use an Omnis 7 program and Internet Explorer 5.1 on DSL. I'm stuck with 9.2 for the program we use. The change in performance was first noticed after an increased internet usage for insurance filing. Sometimes it freezes and requires shut down. Other times it takes minutes for the mouse to respond. We have ethernet in the office and this computer can file share off of two others for some data. None of this is new or changed. The printer is the only other device hooked to this machine. I've read most of the posts on freezing and tried the following on different days but no real fix. Today after restart it takes forever to open a shared file on the network.
    - I've run disc first aid from the utilities and Apple Hardware test from the CD that came with it. I've also run everything on Norton Utilities - disc doctor, defragmented, etc.
    - I've shut down and unplugged everything over weekend.
    - I've run with virtual memory on and off.
    - I reset the PRAM
    - I've emptied the Server folder. I've had the IE preferences set to store as little as possible. I've been deleting cookies regularly.
    - I've checked and reset memory for our program, IE, outlook, etc
    - I rebuilt the desktop
I'm not a computer pro, so be gentle. Any help would be great!

Hi, Cherry, and welcome to Apple Discussions. The possibilities that occur to me have to do with a) Internet Explorer, b) your network and c) your hard drive.
Internet Explorer "leaks" memory: no matter how much memory you allocate to it, it will eventually use it all up and take more without asking, if you use it long enough without restarting your Mac. That irresponsible and nonstandard behavior often causes trouble, especially when you haven't given it extra memory to work with. So IE should always be given at least three or four times the Preferred memory that Microsoft disingenuously deems adequate as a default. With IE closed, Get Info on its icon (be sure it isn't an alias icon), click the Memory tab, and increase the Preferred memory figure to 50,000 or 60,000.
If your version of IE isn't 5.1.7, the last one for OS 9, you should update to that version.
You should also restart your Mac at least every couple of days if you make heavy use of IE, and especially if you quit and reopen it and other programs several times a day. Restarting clears and defragments your RAM, which can become very fragmented if programs are opened and quit frequently. Fragmented RAM can also cause freezes.
To eliminate network-related problems as a possible cause of your freezes and stalls, disconnect the eMac from the network for testing purposes. Do the freezes and slowdowns diminish or disappear?
A hard drive that is failing can cause freezes, and often causes drastically reduced performance for a while (sometimes a very short while!) before it stops working altogether. A hard drive that is overly full can produce the same symptoms.
Check on how full your hard drive is by clicking once on its icon and then choosing Get Info from the File menu. What are the figures shown for "Capacity" and "Available"? If the latter is less than about 15% of the former, your drive is too full. That in itself could cause your problems, even if the drive is working fine. But if the drive isn't overly full and disconnecting from the network didn't change anything, suspicion shifts to the hard drive itself.
Since you're working with what is likely to be a fairly sophisticated custom database in Omnis, I hope it's safe to assume that all your data is backed up frequently. If it isn't, now is the time to back it up — don't delay. If your drive is on the way out, it could go over the edge at any minute. Is it making any unusual noises? Did Norton Disk Doctor take an unusually long time to run on it when you did so recently? Does the computer take a long time to start up, or do slowdowns only occur after it's been running for a while?

I have WNDR3700 N600 as well and it's been working very well for about six months. I live in a block of flats (the walls are made of concrete) and the router is behind three walls. In this environment (I can see 15 other networks around me so it is pretty crowded here) I get full signal on 2.4GHz without problems. The 5GHz network is visible as well, but the signal is poor because of those concrete walls. The connection is really rock-solid, the settings is the best I have ever seen, it allows you to setup almost everything. I can really recommend it.

  • ADFSecurity and poor performance

Not sure if this is the right forum, but when I posted this in OC4J and Java EE forum, I was advised to post it here, so here I go...
We are seeing performance issues with apps in OC4J with ADFSecurity enabled, and security provider as OID. ADFBC apps show very poor response times. A button click takes 3 - 5 seconds to go to next page.
When we inspected the logs, we see that around 2.5 seconds (for a 3sec response) are spent on a getPermissions() method call, as below.
    ========================================================
    JAAS-LDAP: getPermissions([GranteeEntry: id=null displayName=null, (principal: cls=oracle.security.jazn.spi.ldap.LDAPRealmUser, name=xxxxx), (principal: cls=oracle.security.jazn.spi.ldap.LDAPRealmRole, name=OracleDASServiceAdminGroup), (principal: cls=oracle.security.jazn.spi.ldap.LDAPRealmRole, .........
    =========================================================
When ADFSecurity is disabled, the response is in milliseconds.
We have around 1700 permissions and around 50 grantees in this test env.
We tried turning cache on (ldap.cache.policy.enable=true, ldap.cache.realm.enable=true, ldap.cache.session.enable=true), increasing the cache initial capacity (ldap.cache.initial.capacity=2000) etc, but no improvement in performance.
Any help / thought will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Krishnan,
you may want to file a service request with customer support to help you tracking down the problem. This forum wont be able to help you with this instance specific problem without looking at your installation. One thing to check is how the performance is if the permissions are checked against system-jazn-data.xml instead of OID. If this is of much better performance then the problem is not in ADF Security but the access to OID

  • Macbook cpu problem extreme frequent slowdown and subs performance problems

    Hello
Since summer 2007 we have been experiencing speed problems with one of our Macs a Macbook bought in 2006. Initially we thought it was just because we were asking too much of the computer. But unfortunately this is not the case. What happens is that while working normally (normal performance) with one or more applications, the computer starts to slow down to a near halt. You notice this because instead of for example opening a new window right away it slowly unrolls the window until it is open. At the same time the fan starts to accelerate and often the little color wheel appears instead of the mouse arrow. The computer is warm but not hot. Usually after a while the speed of the computer comes back to normal and the fan will stop turning at high speed. When checking cpu usage during such an "episode" most of the time cpu usage by Safari or Firefox Activity monitor indicates cpu usage by Safari and Firefox 100-110 % which strikes me as not being right . Quitting these programs seems (seems !) to return the computer to normal faster. The Apple store has replaced the memory, no effect, I did a total clean install of OS, updated it to the latest version of Tiger no effect. What can be the problem ? Is it the logic board as a whole or the graphics portion ? Or is something blocking the vent and it does not cool sufficiently? We are at a loss what to do.
Any advise would be appreciated. Right now all I can think of is to bring the computer in to an Apple Care Center probably resulting in a high bill even though in retrospect this problem started before the expiry of the Apple warranty.
    Many thanks for any help.

    Hello thanks,
We use websites like Wall Street Journal online, viamichelin.fr, yahoo, NCBI. I may have given the wrong impression that it only happens with internet use, it also happens with iMovie or Nikon capture NX but I guess we just notice it more with internet use because this computer is mostly used for that plus e-mail.

I took a look at those sites. I noticed several ad/content displays on online.wsj.com which probably used Flash or Java animation/video. Yahoo! typically has tons of animation features (especially stuff like falling snow on holidays), and viamichelin.fr has a bunch of animated ads. NBCI looks to be the nastiest of the bunch.
If your fan is turning on from having multiple websites like those on, I'm not surprised.

  • Cisco SA520 - Unable to block all torrents and Poor Performance

Hi, I have installed a Cisco SA520W Appliance at a Client who has about 40-50 PC's, the device has the latest firmware 2.1.7 and latest IPS signature (17) installed, the client is quite disappointed about the performance of the device as he believes Internet browsing access has slowed down substantially.
The main problem the client is encountering is that, he is unable to block Utorrent P2P software and this is not allowing him to retain Internet control from the SA520 appliance.
He had also commented on the fact that there does not appear to be a status monitor on IP usage of Internet access to pinpoint who at that time would be hogging up the bandwidth.
Any feedback, same encounters scenarios and possible fixes to the above issues would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Shawn

You might find this thread interesting regarding the router's performance with IPS turned on.  An SA540, and an access point, would yield slightly better performance.  That's what we use.
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2022832?tstart=60
There are some older threads regarding the SA500 series router's ability to detect torrent activity.  You might want to dig them up and respond to them.  The Cisco folks were working diligently at optimizing the IPS engine's ability to detect different types of torrent activity.
There is no way to monitor Internet access usage at the individual IP level that I am aware of.  I suggest turning on network logging (to a syslog server as there will be a lot of data to capture) and monitor traffic that way.  Kiwi Syslog Server has a free version that your client could use.

  • I continue to experience crashes, audio glitches and poor performance since version 5

I have spent 2 phone sessions with tech support and unfortunately no issues were resolved.   As suggested by tech, I have repaired my permission in Mac safe mode.  I have cleaned out my media cache.   I have closed all other programs during editing.  I have upgraded to the latest CUDA driver and the latest magic bullet release.
Here is a list of ongoing issues since version 5.0.   The italicized issues are new to PP CC 2014
    (1) During playback, video will freeze and playhead continues to move forward.
    (2) Adding multiple layers of audio creates static and popping sounds like an old vintage record.
    (3) Skipped frames or lagging during playback of a fully rendered timeline
    (4) Saving can be very slow and sometimes take up to 30 seconds for 1 save
    (5) Very poor responsive times when loading mp3 or wav files into the Source monitor.  Playback delays before playback of audio.
    (6) Delays when rewind or ff of video material.
    (7) PP CC does not work well with magic bullet at all; constant crashing.   Magic bullet will not load the selected video layer *if there is more than 1 video layer stacked on top of each other.
    (8) Constant crashing during playback of clips with magic bullet effect
This is a long list to contend with so if anyone can offer assistance on just 1 issue, that would be appreciated.  I can't restart PP every hour; this is not an acceptable work flow.
thank you very much in advance for any assistance.
    Steve

I'm having some of the same issues since the update cc14

  • Game is running with low resolution and poor performance

Hi, I have purchased dv4 entertainment laptop 2 years back. Recently, I installed Ford Collections - Car game in my laptop, but it is not running properlly which means that the resolution is little poor and it is very poor and getting slow when playing multiplayed in the laptop. Also, I am unable to install the Adventures game in my machine, getting DirectX error. I am not sure this issue is because of the in-adequate configration of Graphics card Please guid me to reslove this issue.

Compressed using compressor, burned DVD with I-DVD.
Compressed to what codec using Compressor?
iDVD uses its own internal encoder -it has probably gone through two compression cycles as a result, which will hammer the quality.
You should feed iDVD with a file from FCP using this method instead:
File > Export > QuickTime Movie > Current Settings. You can choose Self Contained or Reference.
Self Contained is preferable as it does not depend on the original footage and associated render files being present. It gives you a stand alone master from which to make the deliverables.
