Frequently freezing.

The last few weeks my MacBook Pro has been freezing at the loading page, the loading wheel will just freeze before loading the log in page. I ran my mac off the disk and did a disk utility repair which finally got me through to the desktop. I then updated to Lion hoping it would fix any problems it was having but it hasn't worked. Every time I use my Mac it ends up freezing and I can't do anything but turn it off and back on and it is getting stuck at the loading wheel again.
I got a problem detail come up but I don't have any knowledge to know what this means or if it can help find the source of the problem. Any ideas on how I can fix this would be grand.

My mac os frequently freezes for one to two minutes at a time. I have uninstalled and reinstalled flashplayer 11.3 several times because I sometimes get a crash report on flashplayer. I would like other suggestions as to what more I can do.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Frequent freezes when I upgraded to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro/Aug. 09.

I'm becoming very frustrated as my brand new, 2 week old, aluminum MacBook Pro 15in, is frequently freezing. I don't know what to do because I don't know what's causing it. The specifications of my MacBook Pro should be able to multi-task although I rarely ever have more than three programs open at once. Although, I do still see frequent freezes even with one application open.
I have no idea what to do. Can anyone help me with my problem?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure why or how this might've helped, but it's the only thing that I did recently that seems to have fixed the issue. About a week ago I decided to keep the Activity Monitor open so that I could see what was happening when things started freezing. Turns out that the "data written" graph under the 'Disk Activity' section was maxing itself out each time things started freezing up.
I tried to do a disk repair withing OS X but was told to reboot it. I did that, fixed some disk permissions and then was told that the disk itself didn't need repairing.
I rebooted after that and have been going crash/freeze free for at least a week since then. I have no idea if it was really what caused things to start working again or if it was a fluke, but here's what I did:
    1) Placed the OS X CD in my drive and rebooted.
    2) Ran the Disk Utility application and clicked 'Verify Disk Permissions'.
    3) It reported some issues, so then I clicked 'Repair Disk Permissions', where it fixed them.
    4) Just to see how things were, I clicked 'Verify Disk' where I was told that everything looks okay.
Seems to be working great since then! Good luck!

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
Here is a link to a Widget to monitor your temps and other operations:

since you are running 10.6.8 did you install the combo update?
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
It is more stable than the regular version.
You could use your original install disc and boot from the disc, run Disc Utility and do a repair disk.

I am running Safari 5.1.7 on 10.6.8 and experiencing frequent freezes and crashes, how do I solve this problem?
    Hal Harris

The best way is to post the crash log next time it crashes. That will contain specific information that will help find the problem. Logs are cryptic but there are people here who can make some sense of them.
I'm running 5.1.7 under 10.6.8 on both my iMac and MacBook Pro and it is completely stable. However I have no extensions installed. Incompatible extensions are a common source of Safari instability

  • New iMac Frequent Freezes

Please Help: I have a 6 week old new Intel Duo iMac and been getting frequent freezes that require hard restarts. It started when I tried to print a document into a PDF file. Then after 2 hard restarts I could not log IN into my account. AppleCare recommended reintalling OSX and archiving. My IT department did this because I am not allowed to have the OSX disks. However, after this, the problems continue. Sometimes when opening a new application. I ran DiskUtility and everything is fine. Can I be runing out of memory? I have 2GB of SDRAM... The whole problem started the same day I did the last security update...
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: iMac
    Machine Model: iMac4,1
    CPU Type: Intel Core Duo
    Number Of Cores: 2
    CPU Speed: 2 GHz
    L2 Cache (shared): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB

Check these threads and if you still think it is hardware, there are lots of Intel Macs out there that are busted.

And there are more... Many people are spending numerous hrs tryin to fix this mess. For all (including me) it seems to work if you reinstall the system and avoid the last QT and Security updates. However, I still cant use Acrobat 7 because it freezes the iMac.

  • MacBook Pro frequent freezes problem

    Hi everyone,
My MacBook Pro frequently freezes despite very light use. I took it to a "genius" today, but he was not very helpful. Actually, it froze again right at the apple store while they were checking it. The log showed some errors from Quicksilver right before the freeze and they suggested disabling Quicksilver for a while. At the same time they said that Quicksilver is "solid" and should not cause any serious problems. They also recommending deleting flash plugins, but admitted that it was unlikely that a flash plugin was causing freezes.
Nothing came up during hardware tests, and I already did a clean reinstall of the OS (twice).
I would appreciate any suggestions. The Macbook Pro is 6 months old, 17in, 2.66 Ghz Core i7 with 8 GB of RAM. There is 300+ GB of free space on the hard disk.
    Thanks

I had similar issues. I formatted, did a clean install, and ran software update to make sure everything was up to date. Then I logged in for the first time, ran handbreak and 6 vlc windows and it froze within 10 minutes. This is most likely not caused by Quicksliver or any other software. You should register your complaints in this thread to keep them all together:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2768351&tstart=0
Then you should call apple care to register your complaint. I've scheduled a call for tomorrow.

  • TS1717 I can't open iTunes. I'd been experiencing frequent freezes when I was using the iTunes store the past few days. What can I do to open iTunes?

? I can't open iTunes at all. When I hit the icon, it lights up but doesn't engage to open the program. The past few days I'd been experiencing frequent freezes when using the iTunes Store. Any ideas for how to open iTunes?

I would copy over the entire thing if you have room.  With iTunes 10.4 though, you can download any previous iTunes purchases you have made in the past with your current iTunes account.  While in iTunes, look at the left hand side of your screen and select "Purchases" and look at the bottom right corner of the screen and select "Download Previous Purchases".  If you have an iPhone, iPod and/or iPad...you can do the same thing from each device.  Nice new feature...just remember that those ripped CDs need a back-up!!!  Enjoy...

  • Frequent Freezes

I posted this same problem before without any rectification. I experience frequent freezes and finally located a problem in crash reporter when the report noted "unrecoverable usb crash on port 20." I have two usb mouses, Kensington turbo that is hard wired; a Logitech wireless (bluetooth) and an application called Maximice. I use the Kensington when I do work at home and use the logitech when I perform using Keynote (I use it to go from one slide to another during the presentation). I thought originally that the kensington was the culprit but couldn't prove it. When I go to Activity Monitor, I notice that two mouse applications plus MaxiMice (a scrolling curser app) are all loaded. I'm beginning to wonder if they are all conflicting. I still believe that the Kensington is the problem since I had the problem before I loaded Logitech. It doesn't happen in any particular application and it has happened during playback of a DVD. Any Ideas?

  • Firefox frequently freezes for 30-60 seconds when I click on bookmarks, bookmark buttons, almost anything really.

Firefox frequently freezes for 30-60 seconds when I click on bookmarks, bookmark buttons, almost anything really. It has been doing this ever since I downloaded the latest update (7.0.1). It is really frustrating. Can you please help?

You will also notice that your shift key will be emulated. Meaning that keys you will try to press will press but they will act like you are pressing the shift key when you are doing them.
Try this, minimize the firefox window by pressing the tab on your taskbar. After doing that maximize it again. You will magically be able to click any link on your page. When you navigate to a new page however, the entire situation will start all over. My only remedy is rebooting and hoping it doesn't happen again soon.

  • Frequent freezes with black "you need to restart" error box

Since installing Tiger I get frequent freezes along with an unfamiliar error message that reads "you need to restart..." In addition, I often find this has happened when the computer has been asleep; I'll enter the office to find the computer making a loud 'racing' noise, the power supply and fan sound like a car being driven at 60 mph in first gear....
When I installed the OS, I also attempted to update the firmware but wasn't able after seveal attempts to determine if the firmware was infact updated: saw no progres bars, no long whining tone as per the instructions...
Are thesse issues related? Any ideas?

the FAQ suggests that I might start with upgrading firmware, which n the last couple of 'softwre updates' I have been prompted to do. But in trying he procedure, I don't seem to experience what the update instructions describe: I click shut down, I press and hold the power button, trying both the keyboard power button and the one on the face of the tower itself, and I hear no long tone, nor blinking light on the front. Instead I get a black window which welcomes me to Open Firmware with instructions as to how to boot or shut down....no status bar, no alert as to when the firmware has been updated...
Is there another way to update he firmware....?

  • Frequent Freezing (Captivate 7)

    Hello,
I am testing Captivate 7 after a few months now of familiarizing myself with Captivate 6.When editting my recorded Video Demo I have noticed very frequent freezing of the program. Is there an auto save feature when using Video Demo mode or something? I ask because when I began writing down the times of the freezing and found it was every 10 minutes on the hour, as though it was scheduled. It only freezes for a minute or two each time, but this is still inconvenient. I was hoping there was a way to turn off whatever option is causing this. I am running the Captivate 7 trial on a Windows 7 machine; nothing else is open and the machine in question has no internet connection. I have not noticed this issue with Captivate 5 or 6 (Though frequent freezing/ crashing sometimes occurs with those versions it is usually the fault of RAM and large file sizes), nor have I encountered it when created SCORM modules. It only occurs in video demo editting.

Hi Express1999, I had the same issue. Sankaram from Adobe provided me with the fix below:
We have a hot fix for you for the issue “Adobe CP7 app to freeze every 10 minutes for about 15 seconds”. Please validate and let us know your feedback.
    Cp7 32 bit:
    Install instructions:
Download the zip file present at  https://workspaces.acrobat.com/?d=Q9aKordPYtFClTp97K7yEA
    1.       Close Captivate if it is running.
    2.       Save the downloaded zipped file to some location, say “myfolder”. Unzip this file. You can see “Cp7-NonResponding-Cp7-32bit\CPWidgetUI.dll.
    3.       Go to “<Captivate installation Dir>” folder. Rename the file “CPWidgetUI.dll” to “CPWidgetUI.dll_orig”. Then copy the corresponding file from step2 to this place.
    4.       Launch Captivate and use it.
    32 bit Captivate installation Dir : C:\Program Files(x86)\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 7(32 Bit)\
    Cp7 64 bit:
    Install instructions:
Download the zip file present at  https://workspaces.acrobat.com/?d=lbbbg-c0AbYagdL2UWjgBA
    1.       Close Captivate if it is running.
    2.       Save the downloaded zipped file to some location, say “myfolder”. Unzip this file. You can see “Cp7-NonResponding-Cp7-64bit\CPWidgetUI.dll.
    3.       Go to “<Captivate installation Dir>” folder. Rename the file “CPWidgetUI.dll” to “CPWidgetUI.dll_orig”. Then copy the corresponding file from step2 to this place.
    4.       Launch Captivate and use it.
    64 bit Captivate installation Dir : C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 7 x64\
Let us know whether the freeze issue is resolved.
    Awaiting for your response.
    Thanks,
    Sankaram

  • Frequent freezes since update to 10.6.8

    Hi all,
Thanks for you help in advance
I updated to 10.6.8 and first had a problem with the dock using 100% CPU, I worked around this using the fix provided here http://bit.ly/mPCVii
The thing is, I have nother problem now, every once and a while (20 minutes, 40 minutes, etc ...) one app hangs, so I switch to a new app or go to the dock or try to force quit it and the whole computer freezes for 20-30 seconds and then eveyrthing comes back to normal.
This happens whether I've got 1 or 10 apps launched and it also happens whether I'm on a simple app like TextEdit, Chrome or Safari or more powerful ones like Parallels, Photoshop, etc ... which makes me beleive that this isn't an app oriented issue.
Also, after the update to 10.6.8 and after the Airport Update, I had to repair permissions for these, they all got repaired using disk utility except for one which is the remote desktop agent (ARDagent), myabe this is linked sonce there was a security issue in Leopard 2 years ago with this.
I've also tried resetting PRAM and rebooting in Safe Mode.
    Thanks for your help gents.
    Kind Regards,
    Arnaud
    MacBook Pro 2011 15'
    2 GHz Intel Core i7
    8Gb RAM
    512Gb crucial SSD

    Arnaud,
I am also experiencing the frequent freezes and the 100% CPU usage since the upgrade. I looked online and fixed the CPU usage with the fix mentioned in the thread but still have the freezes.
I just verified my permissions and i had a bunch issues. I repaired them and now they're reporting ok. I'm going to try resetting SMC and I hope that takes care of it.
I read your comment about the SATA II drives and i wanted to let you know i don't think it's that. I had two SATA 2 drives in my macbook and upgraded to 2 SATA 3 drives two days ago. I thought the freezes were related to one of my drives but now i not sure. I don't remember having any problems with my old SSDs but then again i can't remember if i upgraded to 10.6.8 when i had those in my system. I guess what i'm saying is that it appears the problem occurs regardless of if you have SATA 2 or SATA 3 SSDs in the system.
Something that i found odd was some of my xbench scores. Before i fixed the CPU problem i received about a 600 for my SSDs. Right after i fixed it went down to about 440. I did the permission fix and it went back up to 500 then right back down to 440s. I don't know if that has anything to do with the upgrade but it's definitely odd...
I'm half tempted to reinstall OSX not upgrade to 10.6.8. I could see that stops the freezes stop and if the Xbench results go back to the 600s....  If not, Lions only a week away. Maybe that will fix everything. Hopefully someone has some suggestions. If i decide to reinstall ill post my findings.

  • Streaming audio and video frequently freezes or becomes garbled.

Streaming audio and video frequently freezes or becomes garbled on my Macbook.  I do not have this problem with non streaming media such as iTunes or downloaded video.  The problem started six or eight months ago and has gradually become worse.  I don't know what to start checking.

I have some issues with this feature. I can play all the media, however, I can only hear sound for a few secondsbut no images; then freezes.
    Format: xvid (.avi)
OS: Windows Vista home premium X64 (WMP 11)
Does anyone has the same problem or a fix?

  • Frequent Freezes and Panics..

My 15" PB has been suffering frequent freezes, with the occasional kernel panic thrown in for good measure. System log usually indicates various wireless network events just prior to freeze. My external firewire drive also appeared to unmount itself in most recent freeze (see log below).
I've tried obvious fixes like repairing disk permissions, resetting various plists, creating new user and also Cache Cleaner. Any thoughts gratefully received.
    TIA
    Jon

    Hi jonm66,
Because you have two 1gB Ram sticks, try taking one out and running with only one installed.
Try each stick in both slots to see if there are any changes.

  • Since the upgrade to 4.0.1, both of my mac osx computers get multiple popups, despite being enable, and slow tracking and frequent freezing

Since the upgrade to 4.0.1, both of my mac osx computers get multiple popups and popunders, despite the block popups being enabled, as well as slow tracking(at regular card game sites, and frequent freezing of open windows.

Honestly I would never run both Win 7 & XP at the same time in a VM. 7 needs at least 4GB to run properly and uses more resources then XP.
I personally use VMware Fusion and XP. At this time there is no software, that I'm aware of or use, that does not run on XP. So for my Mac Win VM purpose I only run XP with the software in need to use in Windows. This work very well for me. I have 2 CPUs and 3GBs of RAM assigned to XP. Leaving the other 2 CPU cores, 4 HT cores, and 5GBs of RAM for OS X.
Not sure why you need, or want, to run both versions of Windows at the same time. I don't see the need as stated above.
