Frequently repairing same permissions (not"We are using special permission"

I'm running into some frequent weirdnesses on my G4 (slow response, hangups, various things crashing that didn't used to crash) which I don't believe are related to this permissions issue (I think I have a drive or a partition flipping out); however, part of what I've been doing is repairing permissions when I do run into these problems. After a handful of times of this over the last, say, month, I've noticed that the same permissions keep repairing. Here's the Log:

Any idea what's going on with this? My impression is that these are all invisible files, or, at least, part of the app packages. What should I do about it if anything?

Well, right now, the ratio of free space to total space is way out of whack. The capacity of the partition is 260GB with free space at 3.5GB. Yes, slap me on the back of the hands, I deserve it! This may well be the cause of my current problems as I didn't realize the ratio was so bad 'til now.
As for your other questions, there haven't been Unexpected Quits. Some programs will simply hang up ("not responding" in the Force Quit menu)--programs such as Final Cut 4.5 (the work disc, however, is a different partition which currently has 5GB on it) I can't remember the others offhand, sorry, except System Prefs just did that to me today when I clicked on the Spotlight Pane. I did have a kernal panic a handful of days ago after the whole computer froze and I rebooted. Rebooting after the panic, the desktop came up ok.
I've installed many things over the last month or two, though they haven't been major programs. Shareware & Freeware type of things. As for enhancers, I have Sizzlin Keys, WindowShadeX, APE, Zooom, DivX, & Flip4Mac free player.
At the very least, sounds like I need to clear up some space.

  • Repairing same permissions over and over again.

    Hello
Just wanted to know if it's normal to always see the same permissions being repaired and at the same time not being repaired since the same lines always show up over and over again, even though I have them repaired 2 and 3 times in a row? As far as I remember, once permission have been repaired, the same repaired permissions are not supposed to show up again, right? Here's what it looks like:

The system seems to be going all right, even though the reboots and shutdowns are sometimes very slow with the little kinda turning fading clock. Is this totally normal and not affecting anything at all, or can I go play around in the system trashing something to make it better?
    Thanks

  • Repairing Disk Permissions - Not Working with Lion

I simply am not able to repair disk permissions when my Mac is booted normally - the disk utility hangs and never stops - when I boot in recovery more I can run the utility just fine - and then boot as normal.  I am wondering what might be causing this or if anyone else is having a similar problem?

With Lion, it is best to do any disk repairs via the recovery partition
And why do you say that?  I have heard no such thing, and this was never the case with previous systems.  It has always been recommended to repair permissions while booted from the system whose permissions need to be repaired.  Do you have documentation that this recommendation has changed?
Joe, repairing permissions works fine for me without needing to boot into recovery mode.  Are you giving it plenty of time to finish?  Sometimes it may seem to be frozen... sticking on "less than a minute" for well more than a minute, for example.  Have you repaired the hard drive (which you do need to boot from the recovery partition to do)?

  • Repair Disk Permissions not working?

Based on a printer problem, HP suggested that I run Repair Disk Permissions. I did, generating 9 pages of fixes.  But if I clear the history and run it again immediately, the same list of repairs is generated, suggesting that nothing was fixed.

    It's no problem, see this

  • Repairing permissions,not clean

I have had a dual 2 g5 for about a year, mostly used for video editing and such, lateley (the last 2 weeks or so) it has been slowing down during less than average tasks (safari opening) rendering small pictures in photoshop cs. I have safe booted/repaired permisions every month with sucess. now no matter how many times i repair them thier is always the same permission repair. So my question is, is there another something I can do or find out how to get a clean bill of health from the permissions window. Thanks in advance for any help with this matter. P.S. Is DiskWarrior a good option?

I have written a few performance tips here
    http://homepage.mac.com/hogfish
It could be a combination of things.
1: Not enough RAM - get enough to cover all open apps requirements
2: The internet or other networks - take yourself offline with a blank location in network
3: A large almost filled boot drive - reduce and keep it to ideally less than 50% filled, don't go over 80% filled.
4: OS unoptimized - clone your boot drive to a external and back again
5: Slow hard drive - have a boot drive just for boot/apps/itunes/ and a bare bone "home" and keep space hogging user files (especially movies) in new folders on another drive.
6: Caches overloaded, System Prebinding is off - Get OnyX (search Apple) and run all the Automation with a reboot once a month.
7: Daisychaining hard drives - keep each drive on it's port off the G5, don't use hubs your just bottlenecking your interfaces.
8: Video requires hard drive speed and redundancy - Video eats drives fast, consider a X-RAID in a RAID 5 configuration with a lot of drives for fast speed and redundacy of your data.
9: Photoshop -Tiger over rides CS2's RAM limit, but not the previous versions of Photoshop, you'll do good upgrading and having plenty of RAM.
10: Run X-Bench once in awhile to get a grip of the performance of your machine, especially the boot drive. I would try to your uncached 4k block writes to over 100 MB p/s
With the latest update the Permission Repair "We are using special...." is pretty long. It's just informing you of changes and not neccessarily means they were thrown off.
DiskWarrior only repairs your directory, it's optimizations in tests are pretty limited. It's expensive and it's name is a misnomer. If your directory needs repair, it's the program to get. I bought it once and have gone for a year without it just fine as directories rarely foul up.
I would clone your boot drive to a external and back again, you can read how by visiting my link and downloading the file.

  • Repairing disc permissions

I frequently repair disc permissions on my three apple computers running the latest updated version of Tiger. Today, when I went to repair permissions on each computer, I noticed a large amount of permission repairs, and all the
same ones on all three computers. After the repairs were made, and I ran permission repairs again, all the same problems showed up gain. Usually, one sees a clean slate when running repairs after it has just been done. This has occured on all three computers. I have never seen this before. I have have a G5 dual tower, a G4 powerbook 12", and a G4 powermac tower. Any ideas???
    THanks

What you are seeing is normal and nothing to concern yourself with. You will see thesame messages each time you run the disk permissions utility. I used to have a link to an explanation of this but with the forum changes I can't seem to locate it. The bottom line is that it is nothing to worry about, it is just informational and not an indication of a problem,

  • Repairing system permissions

    OK,
I have wondered this already for a while now..
Last time, my microphone from my iBook stopped working.
I thought.."noo..!the wire is cut" etc.
I tried everything from settings etc etc. Nothing.
Then - I decide to try "repair system permissions" from First Aid -pane.
And VOILA! it started working again.
Once, my spotlight stopped working. And there was the same solution.
Why those System Permissions change, so that some things just stop working?
I haven't done anything outside my home folder.
    !?!?!

System permissions come from the Unix base of Mac OS X. Certain users have permissions to access certain files, while others don't. When installing an application that comes with an Installer package, that installer might change a bunch of system permissions. Therefore, it's good to repair permissions after an installation. It's not your fault.
For your interest: When repairing permissions, Disk Utility might tell you "We are using special permissions..." even though you might have clicked repair a few times. Those notification messages are totally normal and nothing to worry about.

  • Using Disk Utility-It Just keeps Saying Using Special Permissions

I repair permissions every day like a good boy. The last couple od days, there are about 25 lines that say Using Special Permission, instead of reapaired. The Powerbook is running fine and I ran Diskwarrior and Techtool Pro, and it's fine. But it just says the same thing, Using Special Permissions. Running 10.4.3. Any ideas?

You don't have a problem and repairing disk permissions does not need to be performed daily or on a regular basis - only after installing software (especially after installing 3rd party software that uses an installer) and as a system troubleshooting procedure only.
Check Maintaining Mac OS X for recommended maintenance for OS X (which isn't much) focusing on the Maintenance Myths section.

  • Repair Disk Permissions getting busy with time

When my PowerBook was newer (8 months ago to 2 months ago), permissions repair rarely returned much in the info display window. Now it gives many lines of permission corrections. Often repeating the same ones. For example it often repairs many items in the Resource folder of the Apples DVD player. [ie. - We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Applications/DVD Player.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/AboutBox.nib/objects.xib. New permissions are 33204]. Always the same permissions. It will display these same corrections upon immediately rerunning the repair from Disk Utility. When the PB was new, ran OSX 10.4.1. Now up to OSX 10.4.4
Most other repairs are Widgets. Many of which I have not used. Thus I have been deleting them.
Why should the content of the DVD player resource folder get constant permission repair attention?
    Harmz

You can safely ignore all of the "We are using special permissions...." messages. They are not errors.
There have been a lot more than with 10.4.0 but they don't mean there is a problem.
It looks bad, but it's not. There is an Apple KB article that explains it further (it needs to be updated to include the Widget, iDVD and any other lines that say "using special permisisons" but the idea is the same.

  • Need advice on Repairing Disk Permissions...

I need some input from those who know how to Repair Disk Permissions (under Disk Utility, for those who don't know).
Basically, I lost a TON of my Access and Privileges on my G4 recently--which I really only noticed after iTunes would no longer let me import anything (no matter how many times I tried changing the Ownership & Permissions on my Music folder's Info section)--which, I might add, I suffered due to a virus caused by Limewire. As had been suggested to me, I Verified Disk Permissions, and saw that I had a TON of problems listed on my startup HD. So I'm now seeking ways to repair them.
Now, the most obvious way is using the Repair Disk Permissions program (which I've actually never had to use before). However, under OS10.3.9, when I select the Repair Disk Permissions on Disk Utility, in listing all my Drives available, it actually shows the drive in 2 formats/pictures:
    1) the actual technical name/manufactor model/GB size of the drive (on top), and
    2) the Desktop name and Icon picture of the Drive as it appears on my desktop.
This confuses me: as you can guess, the startup Drive in question is only partioned as one. So on Disk Utility, which of these 2 pictured drives do I have to highlight and Repair Disk Permissions to (i.e. 19GB Maxtor32049 Vs. 'HAL')?
Also, for those of you who have used other means (programs) to change Disk Permissions, which would you recommend? For example, I got a program from Versiontracker called BatCHmod, but I don't know if something like it is any safer than just using Repair Disk Permissions. Because unfortunately, I'm running out of room on my disk, and don't have nearly enough space on my other drive to hope to back the whole Drive up to.
    Please help!!!

    Hi phasmatrope!
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk HAL, in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only message it reports is:
"We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util.
    New permissions are 33261"
This is a status message and not a cause for concern. You may safely ignore it.
    Or these:
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1"
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1"
Again, these are status messages, which appeared after Security Update 2005-001.
There may be others that you can ignore. Complete lists at link below.

When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

  • Rationale for Repairing Disk Permissions

I repair permissions before and after installations, and I suggest others to do so. However, I have read in some threads in Discussions there there is no technical basis for repairing disk permissions before installation, and that only repairing after installation is necessary.
I realize that there are different opinions about this, but beyond opinions is there a technical basis or rationale for repairing disk permissions before installations?
    Thanks.

    Hi cornelius,
Here is some reading about this topic. Mind that Apple DOES recommend repairing permissions as routine maintenance (see links at the bottom)! My suggestion to Repair permissions before and after an update has a very simple rational: If you forgot to repair permissions AFTER the last update you might get into trouble. Therefore it is safe and costs only a few seconds to do it before and after the update.
mac.column.ted: Unravelling the Repair Disk Permissions controversy
    "Ted Landau
    May 2006
Repairing Disk Permissions. Not exactly a topic that you would expect to spark much controversy. Yet, surprisingly, it is the focal point of a rather heated debate.
The command itself is innocuous enough. It is included as part of the First Aid component of Disk Utility. Apple's Help for Disk Utility states: "User permissions associated with files, folders, or applications can become damaged and prevent a file or application from opening. Permissions problems can also cause your computer to run slowly. Using Disk Utility, you may be able to fix these permissions problems...Repairing permissions may also be recommended after updating the system or installing new software."
Consistent with this, many users and Web sites (including MacFixIt and at least some postings on MacinTouch) recommend the use of Repair Disk Permissions, not only for specific signs of trouble, but as a part of generic troubleshooting and ongoing maintenance for your Mac.
In contrast, other members of the Mac community (writing in locations such as the Daring Fireball , Unsanity, and the MDJ) argue that running this command just for maintenance, in the absence of any particular symptom, is essentially worthless. Some critics go even further and claim there is no justification for ever selecting to repair permissions. Not only is it useless, they contend, but it may even cause new problems to appear. This viewpoint is often expressed with inflammatory rhetoric such as "covering yourself in Vaseline and rolling around naked in the dirt and repairing permissions are just as likely to fix your Mac OS X problem" (Unsanity).
Regardless of who's right or wrong, I don't believe that insulting users is merited here, especially when these users are simply following advice suggested by Apple itself. As it turns out, I also do not agree with the position of these critics. So, although I may be stepping into a minefield, here's my own take on this subject and my resulting recommendations. [Disclaimer: I was not involved in the authorship of previous MacFixIt articles on this subject. This column is my separate opinion, and does not necessarily reflect the views of MacFixIt.]: Continued"

  • Disk Utility can't Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions"

I tried to run "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" on an external partition, but they all grayed out! "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" were fine! The "Owners Enabled" is "Yes". Why they were grayed out ?!
Get Info on this volume showed:
    Ownership & Permissions:
    You can "Read & Write"
    Details:
    Owner: admin
    Access: "Read & Write"
Ignore ownership on this volume: checked or unchecked STILL grayed out!
Other partitions on the SAME drive are able to do "Very Disk Permissions" and
"Repair Disk Permissions" (as they are NOT grayed out !) The ONLY difference
between the one (CAN'T) and the rest partitions is that one (CAN'T) has
owner by "admin", and the rest partitions (OK to veryify pewrmissions) are owner
    by "system". ANY CLUE ?
    -DC

The options to verify or repair permissions are only available on a disk with Mac OS X 10.2 or newer installed, and all Mac OS X versions set the owner of the partition containing them to system when installed.

  • Permissin repair. same results every time.

Hi, every time I repair permissions, I get the same permissions "repaired" each time. I can do it 3 times in a row, and still the same results. My computer seems a bit sluggish, and it is brand new. Any thoughts?

It let's you know exactly what was done when you repaired permissions. If all you see are We are using special permissions…, then nothing's being repaired. If you see entries, such as Permissions differ on… followed by Permissions corrected on…, then those permissions were incorrect and were corrected.
