Fresh install and Im missing the /etc/ folder

Basically my situation is simple.
I have just done a fresh install and i am missing the /etc/ folder completely. this is not good as need to alter some things in one of the boot files.
I have tried 2 clean installs and had the problem both times.
Has anyone else had this problem? Or know how to rectify it?

Ah i think i have just something. I bought the unlimited upgrade version. But i have done a clean install with it before and the /etc/ folder has still always been there.
Does anyone have an suggestions?

I just did a fresh install of Fedora 15, copied the backup folder of Firefox into the home directory, installed flash using the latest yum package from Adobe, ran all of the extra scripts to install the wrapper for 32 bit apps being used on a 64 bit OS. Upon attempting to open a flash video, Firefox tells me Flash is not installed. Running the Adobe installer (yum package) from the Adobe website reports unable to install package, latest package is already installed.
I followed the trouble shooting steps from your check plugins website and deleted pluginreg.dat (twice) restarting Firefox each time. No change, Flash Player is still disabled by Firefox.

Fresh install and restore

I have just done a complete fresh install of Lion thinking it would clean out all of the old programs etc from the Library, which it did. Until I used migration assistant to transfer my Documents and settings. I left the Applications, as I was just going to copy those of which I wanted by hand. But all of the old program files have been copied and some how the applications as I can open them from the dock. E.g. Chrome, which I have technically not installed yet.
How might I go about this with out loosing all my settings but only having what I want? Is this even possible?

You could do that, but be careful to:
- work from the newly created admin User you just installed
- create other User Accounts in the same order the old ones were previously created
(then import your files separately from each new other account, dragging files from each "same" old other account)
- check which Application would not work anymore, trash its preferences and reinstall it.
Keep the new Apple apps (fresh install) rather than the old, and import your old files from them.
"migrate the settings and applications from the backup drive during the setup process"
This would imply everything is fine and works well on your current system,
so,
there is no need to do a "fresh install" of Mac OS X in the first place.
--> If your current instalation is fine, you need no reinstallation at all,
or,
you can just make an Archive & Install.
Now if there's something wrong in your system that makes you want this "fresh install",
then DO NOT import anything from your old backed up libraries.
--> Why is it that you need a fresh install?
In case it's because you want new User names, something like that,
better consider my first reply method as the safest solution.

Can you browse the Time Machine drive from Finder?
If you can and you know where the picture was stored ie on your desktop you can browse through the folder structure to the picture copy it and paste it somewhere on your new install before right clicking it and 'set as desktop background'

I'd like to do a clean install of SL. The reason I want to do a fresh install is that when I went from Tiger to Leopard (2007 MacPro) vs. Leopard pre-installed new (on my 2008 iMac), there are indeed some difference -- specifically different Leopard driver support that appeared on a fresh install iMac, but not when "upgrading" on my MacPro (printer drivers for example).
My hunch is that SL will detect existing drivers and NOT upgrade them to the SL version -- which may or may not be a good thing especially if the SL version drivers are 64bit while my L version drivers are 32bit. So the end result with going the "upgrade" route will be a mixed bag of 32bit and 64bit drivers. I'm pretty sure this is NOT gonna be a good situation if I ran the "upgrade" rather than a fresh install.
However, it's CRITICAL that I not lose my Windows Drive (Boot camp) with Vista 64 on it. This is a separate physical drive (Bay 4) but if I do a fresh install of SL, will the installer recognize I have a Boot camp drive and will it still allow dual boot using option key at startup (showing my the Mac or Windows drive to boot to)?

Yes you are correct the EFI Looks after the booting of OS's from any hard drive.
if you hold down the alt key while booting it will give you a list of drives it thinks it can boot from.
In theory any windows volume with XP SP2 or newer should boot (+though if not installed on the same hardware originally is will complain about divers & if more than 15% of the hardware has change windows sometimes needs to be reactivated+)
I run multiple systems at my office using the same multi hard drive setup you have and have never had any problems changing / updating the Mac HD while leaving the Windows HD fully intact.

I cannot install an application in the Applications folder without removing it first

For some time now, I have noticed that I cannot install an application into the application folder without first removing it from the folder. If I try to install it by dragging the icon to the application folder, I get a warning that the application can't be moved because the folder "Applications" can't be modified. I click on authenticate and enter the root username and password. I am warned that the application already exists in the location. I am asked if I want to replace the item. The options presented are "Keep both files", "Stop", and "Replace". I choose "Replace". I am then prompted for an administrator's name and password. I enter "root" and the root password. I then get this lengthy error message:
The operation can’t be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure “Locked” is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again.
I checked the permissions and "locked" was already deselected. The permissions grant my regular user read and write permissions, "staff" read-only, and "everyone" read-only. If I add "admin" with read and write permissions, nothing changes, i.e. I get the same error. If I try to enter my user credentials, they are rejected. My user is not an admin user. Previously, when I enterered the root username and password, the operation would complete successfully.
Now if I first remove the application from the Applications folder, then drag the application to the folder, I am prompted for an administrator's name and password. When I enter it, the application is copied successfully.
I have tried fixing file and directory permissions from the disk utility, but that doesn't fix the problem.

When you say, "locked" was already deselected, I take it that you mean the small icon at the bottom right of the Get Info window displayed an open lock picture.
Have you tried locking it, then unlocking it again? I expect you will be able to lock it by simply clicking on the open lock icon, but to unlock it again you will need to supply an Admin password.
Odd that DU didn't fix it. That would be my first thought also. Suggest trying it again, if you haven't already done so.
Speaking of DU, have you verified your HDD?

In the end it was the NVIDIA software - excluding PS as application for support by high performance graphic processor to save energy - activated NVIDIA card use for PS & LR all fine now.

Hi all, I'm shortly to receive my MBP (getting ready to send it back for repair due to the possible whine)I'm wondering about 0 ing the hard drive and doing a fresh install of OSX minus the languages and printer drivers. My question is: will I still be offered the migration option once I've done that so that I can easily port the settings from my 14" iBook.

Okay, mine now works here is what I did.
plug in the iPhone, iPad etc
in iTunes select the phone or iPad
Under Summary uncheck "Sync with this....."
Under "Music" uncheck the "Sync Music"
Let it remove all the songs, dont worry it will come back no problems.
Once that is all done all the music on the phone or ipad should be gone.
Now check them both back on and everything should copy back onto it.
Working now !!!!!

I am experiencing Mavericks failing to copy subdirectories from usb sticks, I am backing up game saves from a console. Both sticks I use are fine, same permissions of course since the console wrote the files. Sometimes it copies, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be related to the mounting process.
Thank God Apple hasn't (yet) broken bash.

This might be an issue with the gacutil that you are using. I have used the gacutil that comes with Microsoft SDK.
You can install Microsoft SDK from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3138

Why doesn't flash player stay installed and why does the saved file disappear. I have downloaded and installed flash player several times on my Win7 Vaio laptop. I have uninstalled and deleted all versions. I am the administrator and I have also turned off my Security Software, but the same thing keeps happening over and over. The Java Script is enabled and I have tried both downloading via IE and firefox. It is rediculous that it keeps disappearing and I keep getting messages that the newest version is needed. I am downloading directly from adobe and they say it is the latest. Getting very frustrated. They ask if we have any problems when we go to the finish line, but there is no place for comments. I guess they don't really care if it works or not.

So is it actually installed, or is it not? If not, download and run the offline installers:

After upgrading to 3.6.8 none of the plugins load even though there are updates available. The updates will not install and even though the error states to look at the console error log there are no errors listed in the log.

I have been having the same issue for the last two weeks. No real indication as to why it ever began other than I had turned off my router and Airport Extreme Base Station off for a weekend while I was away from my place.
iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, all have no issues at all with my Airport Extreme Base Station. Can stay connected throughout my living room, bathroom, bedroom, no issues whatsoever.
My 5 month old MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Core i7 Airport is sometimes perfect, able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue. Then, for no reason, I won't be able to join my wireless network, or when I can join, I can't pick up an IP address. And then it will connect, pick up and IP, and then it won't browse. No real rhyme or reason to when this will happen, or when it works.
I thought that it was an issue with my MacBook Pro, but then my sister visited with her brand new MacBook Pro 2.26 Intel Core 2 Duo, and while a month ago she was able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue, this weekend she had all of the same issues I was having.
My XBOX 360 and MacBook Pro have absolutely no issues with the wired connection. Only my WAN seems to have this issue.
Did you ever find anything more to this?
