Fresh install and preserve boot camp drive?

I have an older 2007 MacPro (2 dual core CPUs @ 3Ghz) that has the following...
MacPro Internals:
Mac HD drive = 500GB (Bay 1)
Mac RAID drive = 500GB (Bay 2) + 500GB (Bay 3)
Windows drive = 320GB (Bay 4) - boot camp drive with Vista 64
ATI 3870 HD Video
BlackMagic Designs Intensity Pro
2nd Firewire card
External devices:
Motu Ultralite FW Audio interface
Mackie Control Surface
M-Audio AXIOM 25 MIDI keyboard
LG Blu-Ray eSATA Burner
30" Mac HD monitor
24" Dell Monitor
42" HD TV
15" SD TV
Oki C5800L color laser printer
Software on my MacPro:
iWorks and iLife 09
Final Cut Studio 3
Logic Pro 9
Adobe CS4 Extended
FX Factory
Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD
QuickTime Pro (purchased version)
I'd like to do a clean install of SL. The reason I want to do a fresh install is that when I went from Tiger to Leopard (2007 MacPro) vs. Leopard pre-installed new (on my 2008 iMac), there are indeed some difference -- specifically different Leopard driver support that appeared on a fresh install iMac, but not when "upgrading" on my MacPro (printer drivers for example).
My hunch is that SL will detect existing drivers and NOT upgrade them to the SL version -- which may or may not be a good thing especially if the SL version drivers are 64bit while my L version drivers are 32bit. So the end result with going the "upgrade" route will be a mixed bag of 32bit and 64bit drivers. I'm pretty sure this is NOT gonna be a good situation if I ran the "upgrade" rather than a fresh install.
However, it's CRITICAL that I not lose my Windows Drive (Boot camp) with Vista 64 on it. This is a separate physical drive (Bay 4) but if I do a fresh install of SL, will the installer recognize I have a Boot camp drive and will it still allow dual boot using option key at startup (showing my the Mac or Windows drive to boot to)?
Rob.

Hi Rob,
Sorry been out of the country
Yes you are correct the EFI Looks after the booting of OS's from any hard drive.
if you hold down the alt key while booting it will give you a list of drives it thinks it can boot from.
In theory any windows volume with XP SP2 or newer should boot (+though if not installed on the same hardware originally is will complain about divers & if more than 15% of the hardware has change windows sometimes needs to be reactivated+)
I run multiple systems at my office using the same multi hard drive setup you have and have never had any problems changing / updating the Mac HD while leaving the Windows HD fully intact.

  • Problems with Windows install and erasing Boot camp partition.

I recently decided I'd try running a copy of XP on my Macbook, the only reason being that the software for my OU work is only available on Windows. I used Boot camp assistant to partition my hard drive which went smoothly. When I tried to install Windows, I get to the Windows install screen, and it says "Press enter to begin installation". Unfortunately, my keyboard doesn't seem to work, so obviously I can't begin the installation. I've tried using my old Apple USD keyboard, but it didn't make any difference. I thought I'd try the whole process from scratch, but found I can't erase the original partition. I've read that you should use Boot camp assistant again, but when I press the continue key, I get the message:
"The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
Does anybody know a way of sorting either of these problems out? Much appreciated.

I've been doing a bit more reading into the problem. I think the keyboard problem's because I'm not using the SP2 version on XP. So hopefully once I get a copy, I should be able to sort it. But I still can't seem to use BCA to erase the partition.

  • After a clone, the boot camp driver are not reconized

    Dear All,
I installed a Imac 24'' with a boot camp. On the boot camp partition , I installed xp and the boot camp driver.
I cloned the OS X partition with Carbone Copy Cloner (CCC) and I cloned the XP partition with Winclone, on 4 iMac 21''
Now I juts cloned a imac 24'' and when I boot on XP, I got serveral windows stating that the driver a not found
However, on the master, it boot very well on the XP partition
Here a some of friver missing
    SM BUS
    Coprocessor
    Ethernet Controller
Someone know why, I could installed 4 time and it does not work now?
    Thanks

    Hi pierrot10,
I assume with the '21" iMac' you refer to the new Öate 2009 21.5" iMac, right ?
Most likely the reason for this are missing Windows drivers, due to newer hardware in the 21.5" and newer BootCamp Windows driver on the OSX DVD that came with the 21.5" iMacs.
While in Windows on the 21.5" insert the Snow Leopard OSX DVD that *came with this iMac*.
The Setup should start automatically and should give you the possibility for a 'Repair Driver'.
Cloning a Windows system from one computer to another is not that easy due to different hardware components.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Late 2013 imac 27" bootcamp install of win 8.1 pro, boot camp driver setup errors out

I installed windows 8 pro via boot camp.  then once the win8 install completed the boot amp driver setup began automaticly.  it errored out at some point with the below error
    Boot Camp Install completed
he installer incountered errors before the  boot camp could be completed.
To retry these operations at a later time please run the installer again.
What is this error?  It does not give me anything to go on.  it seems like most of the drivers were installed fully, but there is still a divce under device manager that is not installed completely.  Also, I don't have the boot camp icon in my system trey in the bottom right corner of my screen.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Installing XP using boot camp with partitiion drive?

I recently re-installed Leopard on my mac, and i decided to partition the drive.
Then, when I went to install XP using boot camp it said that it only works with 1 partition!
Is there any way round this without re-partitioning my drive?
I also have an ext drive now so maybe I could install it there, but that would be slower.

I just tried to run the hardware diagnostic test, half way through, the screen started to flicker so much, I had to abort the test. Please help!

  • Boot Camp Question .... I just bought a 2013 late model Mac Book Pro Retina and am wondering if it is worth installing windows through boot camp. If I install the windows component in order to run an exe file and its component "Declans Korean Flash Cards"

I just bought a 2013 late model Mac Book Pro Retina and am wondering if it is worth installing windows through boot camp.
If I install the windows component in order to run an exe file and its component "Declans Korean Flash Cards"... will it make my mac suseptible to viruses overall due to having a windows component? also will it make my mac slower as well

If you are only going to use one or two window only programs then I wouldn't waste the space.  Try WinonX it allows you to install exe. Files on Mac without installing windows.

  • Archive and install question with boot camp

Hi I have 10.5 and boot camp running right now on my mac. I would love to go back to 10.4 because everything that I use my computer for runs like we all know better. Do all I need to do is do an archive & install? will boot camp still work afterwards if I leave the boot camp partition alone? Could I then delete the (Previous System folder) it makes once everything is A O K ?

We all do not know this. All three of my Mac run better with Leopard.

You are in uncharted waters with BootCamp. I suggest making a complete block-by-block clone of your HD before degrading to Tiger. Most times, to install Tiger you have to do an erase and install. And you may need to use the Leopard DVD to erase the HD since Tiger may not understand the Leopard OS on the HD.
I have Tiger running on the bottom of my TM harddrive, in its own partition as a dual-boot system. Works OK, but it's nowhere near Leopard in performance. I rarely use it.

  • Boot Camp Driver installation crashes every time

Struggled all day to getting Windows installed. Attempted Vista at first, kept failing. Finally managed to get XP installed. Inserted Leopard to install Bootcamp Drivers and it always fails at Apple Keyboard. I hit "Finish Installation" to conitnue and then it always ends up freezing somewhere further down the road or once I got a blue screen memory dump type error.
I'm using a brand new hard disk with Leopard freshly installed and a MacPro (dual 3GHz) so it's a fairly clean, new setup. It just isn't working. Expect absolutely no answers to solve this problem, just logging for the record that it's not working and I'm finished banging my head against a wall with it... it's not yet ready for "primetime" if it has this many problems even on a clean new system like mine.

Tell Me About it!!!! Boot Camp 1.4 is definitely better than 2.0!!!!
I have format my Mac pro for like the whole wk. and boot camp drivers juz keep crashing my laptop upon restart. So far have not found a fail safe method to install vista. Pls help if any1 has found a solution; so far i have tried as administrator account:
    1. Install Vista Ultimate --> Install Boot Camp drivers --> Restart (FAIL)
    2. Install Vista Ultimate --> Install Boot Camp drivers --> Update Vista --> Restart (FAIL)
    3. Install Vista Ultimate --> Update Vista --> Install Boot Camp Drivers --> Restart (FAIL)
The only way i have found possible to not crash vista is not never ever restart after installing boot camp drivers even if boot camp ask u to; I mean never ever ever...and forget about adjusting brightness in vista ever tooo; vista would hang...and u would get the problem again and agian juz like barney.
If anyone out there can save...Pls do...Much appreciated

  • Apple ships wrong boot camp driver for MBA iSight?

Apparently, the built-in iSight camera of MBA is a new version, and it is not covered by the boot camp driver supplied in the MBA dvds (at least not when using VMWare Fusion to run Win XP).
You can alter the iSight.inf file to fool WIndows into accepting the drivers. But at the end, the installation won't complete (probably because of incorrect files). Nonetheless, a generic camera will be installed, and you can still use (barely) the iSight in Windows.
    See below for details.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=463912

You deleted OS X. Now, you have to reinstall it. If your Mac came with DVDs, follow these steps:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X DVD and hold the C key while your computer is starting, and go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility.
    2. Select the hard drive at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    3. Close Disk Utility and install OS X. After installing OS X, you must install Windows again on your computer.
If your Mac didn't come with DVDs, press Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting.
If you need help to install Windows on the computer, see > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf

  • HT3275 oes time machine back up and restore boot camp and the OS inside boor camp

running OS Lion on mac book pro using time machine . Does time machine restore when doing a global restoration of the OS and disk, windows inside parallels and windows inside boot camp?

Why?  Just to make things easier and more stable I guess.  The nice thing for me is that I know I can totally wipe my Mac drive, do a clean install of Mac OS X, and not have to worry about anything on my Windows Boot Camp drive being touched or altered and then having to worry about fixing it somehow.
If you want to delete your Boot Camp partition you can do so by running Disk Utility - it is very simple.  You could then do a restore from your Time Machine backup and not have Boot Camp there anymore and have your whole hard drive for use just for Mac OS X.
