Fresh install boot hangs
Hi,
At outset, note that my installation is pure Arch linux and it is fresh install which I did yesterday.
I have installed Arch linux yesterday with Openbox. I have not yet set it up completely. But something which is annoying me is boot hangs many times. I tried to debug it by adding parameters to kernel using grub-customizer. I added verbose and debug kernel parameter. The place where is hangs is

I used to use Antergos linux. I started getting this problem http://forum.antergos.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1924 , so I switched to Archbang. I was still getting this problem http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?id=5061 . Now I have switched to Arch Linux.
I thought it is problem with Broadcomm firmware or driver. But I think it is something different and related to intel video driver. I have installed Arch linux with Openbox. I am still getting this problem.

I also have Centos 6.4 and Windows 7 on same laptop which never hangs on CentOs or Windows 7. But only hangs on Arch linux randomly during boot. And http://pastebin.com/ does not work or may be down.

Fresh installed arch hanged with Skype in wmi during video call. The keyboard stopped reacting to any keys, including Ctrl+Alt+F1 (F2, F3, F4, F5, F6), Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.
The timer was actually working but updating in 3-5 seconds. While I had powerful laptop (i5 2.6GHz, 8Gb RAM). So,... I had to use power button to restart.
Any ideas how to avoid this in future?

Quick OS X fresh install boot camp question (MP 2006 1,1)
i have a pair of drives in my 2006 1,1 mac pro with one containing a partition of mountain lion (as i recall) along with a boot camp partition of windows XP and the second hard drive containing a CLONE of the mountain lion partition along with a boot camp partition of windows 7.
can i do a fresh RE-INSTALL of mountain lion on the OS X partition and basically keep the two boot camp partitions intact and in use on this 2006 machine? Not to steal The hatter 's thunder, but what is being suggested is that a MP disk which does not have OS X and is less than 2TB in size can be formatted as MBR-only disk when XP is installed, which Windows understands, and you do not have to deal with the vagaries of a hybrid MBR. Otherwise you deal with a GPT/MBR combination. Resizing partitions on the MBR-only disk is also allowed without having to manipulate the hybrid MBR.
A GPT/MBR combination disk can also be converted to a MBR-only disk via GPT Fdisk, provided you do not have anything else (like OS X) which needs a GPT to function. If you need steps, let me know.
The MP 1,1 can be a pure Windows machine, if the WXP is on a standalone MBR only disk, if you leave the XP only disk in the MP. If it has a Hybrid MBR, you have to use Alt/Option, if necessary, to boot into Windows. Since the OS X disk has been removed, -
Fresh install of 10.5 hangs at boot after 10.5.8 update
I'm troubleshooting a MacBook that hangs at start-up after installation of the 10.5.8 complete update. I've run Disk Utility (no errors), fsck (fixed a single error), and repair permissions (oddly, repaired a few on this fresh install). I've booted into verbose mode, and it appears that there's an infinite loop of:
localhost DirectoryService[#]: Launced version 5.8.1 (v514.28)
localhost ReportCrash[#]: Saved crashreport to /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/DirectoryService. . . .(it goes on, but it's just date info).
Again, this is a fresh installation of 10.5. The only programs that have been updated are those updated through Apple Update. I did have problems installing the 10.5.8 update through the Update utility because "the package contents could not be verified," but the update installed fine after I downloaded it from Apple's site.

IBook G3 Will Not Boot - ?/face Icon on fresh install to new hard drive!!
Well, this is my first post here, but I hope someone out there may be able to help me....
I've got this iBook G3, and it will not boot. Originally, I got it and the hard drive was kind of suspect. I was able to install Tiger and use it, but it just stopped booting one day. I figured it was the hard drive, because it wouldn't boot to the OS even when stripped of the extra ram and after a fresh install via target disk mode from my Powermac. So, I changed the drive and reinstalled Tiger. It still won't boot.
Oh, and I've tried resetting the PRAM and resetting open firmware. Any ideas?^^^I'm installing from a family pack and this is the only computer I'm running Tiger on...all of my others are Leopard. Which, now that I think about it, is another reason that cloning the drive to the iBook wouldn't allow it to boot. However, I know the drive is good at least, because my Powermac can boot from it.
Anyway, I put in a 512 mb stick, and it then will get to the grey Apple screen, where it hangs forever. If I do verbose mode, the last line says "creating RAM disk for /var/run"
It sounds like a RAM problem still. I think I have some actual Apple RAM laying around somewhere (maybe a 128 mb), as the stuff that's in it now is not "Mac Ram," but it is what was working when the computer was working before. I'm still at a loss. I know the method I'm using (restored Tiger DVD to partition on iBook due to a bad optical drive), as I've done it before. In fact, it's even the same image from the last time I did it, as I never deleted the .dmg file. -
Fresh install of Server 2012 R2 causes inaccessible boot device on first Reboot
Hello Everyone,
Doing a fresh install of Windows Server 2012 R2 on a SuperMicro X9DRT-HF+ motherboard based server. The server is using iSCSI boot, setup detects the iSCSI disk and copies its files, finishes the "Getting files ready for installation" "Installing
Updates" phase, reboots, takes a while and eventually gives a Blue screen with Inaccessible Boot Device error. I have tried some changing options in the BIOS, I've had Nimble (storage array) support on the phone and they confirmed the setup is correct
but for some reason after the first reboot Windows can no longer find its install files and gives a BSOD.
Additional Information:
Server: SuperMicro X9DRT-HF+ (no internal disk)
Storage: iSCSI disk provided from Nimble CS220 Array
Windows 2008 R2 Server installation will proceed without any problems.
I checked the \Windows\Panther\Setupact.log / CBS.log file and there doesn't seem to be anything indicating a problem.
I have googled a number of times to find solutions but most articles reference a similar problem after installing a particular KB (which shouldn't be the case here). Need some help :)Hey Tim,
Thanks for your reply, since the start of this post I have also installed MDT to try a different approach to installing the OS. Using MDT I have injected the Intel I350 driver into the installation so it should be restarting with the driver loaded.
The odd thing is that when the server reboots the Windows startup screen loads for about 4 minutes before it gives the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error. This would indicate to me that it sees the disk and tries to boot from it but then something goes wrong.
Other than the \Windows\Panther location is there another place I should be looking for log files during this part of the Windows install? I have reviewed all the locations listed under the TechNet library article "hh824819" (I can't post
a link to the article but a google search brings it up) but I can't seem to find a log of when the server crashes what it is doing at that point. -
Fresh install and preserve boot camp drive?
I have an older 2007 MacPro (2 dual core CPUs @ 3Ghz) that has the following...
MacPro Internals:
Mac HD drive = 500GB (Bay 1)
Mac RAID drive = 500GB (Bay 2) + 500GB (Bay 3)
Windows drive = 320GB (Bay 4) - boot camp drive with Vista 64
ATI 3870 HD Video
BlackMagic Designs Intensity Pro
2nd Firewire card
External devices:
Motu Ultralite FW Audio interface
Mackie Control Surface
M-Audio AXIOM 25 MIDI keyboard
LG Blu-Ray eSATA Burner
30" Mac HD monitor
24" Dell Monitor
42" HD TV
15" SD TV
Oki C5800L color laser printer
Software on my MacPro:
iWorks and iLife 09
Final Cut Studio 3
Logic Pro 9
Adobe CS4 Extended
FX Factory
Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD
QuickTime Pro (purchased version)
I'd like to do a clean install of SL. The reason I want to do a fresh install is that when I went from Tiger to Leopard (2007 MacPro) vs. Leopard pre-installed new (on my 2008 iMac), there are indeed some difference -- specifically different Leopard driver support that appeared on a fresh install iMac, but not when "upgrading" on my MacPro (printer drivers for example).
My hunch is that SL will detect existing drivers and NOT upgrade them to the SL version -- which may or may not be a good thing especially if the SL version drivers are 64bit while my L version drivers are 32bit. So the end result with going the "upgrade" route will be a mixed bag of 32bit and 64bit drivers. I'm pretty sure this is NOT gonna be a good situation if I ran the "upgrade" rather than a fresh install.
However, it's CRITICAL that I not lose my Windows Drive (Boot camp) with Vista 64 on it. This is a separate physical drive (Bay 4) but if I do a fresh install of SL, will the installer recognize I have a Boot camp drive and will it still allow dual boot using option key at startup (showing my the Mac or Windows drive to boot to)?
Rob.Hi Rob,
Sorry been out of the country
Yes you are correct the EFI Looks after the booting of OS's from any hard drive.
if you hold down the alt key while booting it will give you a list of drives it thinks it can boot from.
In theory any windows volume with XP SP2 or newer should boot (+though if not installed on the same hardware originally is will complain about divers & if more than 15% of the hardware has change windows sometimes needs to be reactivated+)
I run multiple systems at my office using the same multi hard drive setup you have and have never had any problems changing / updating the Mac HD while leaving the Windows HD fully intact. -
Hi, My Mac Mini 2006 early core Duo
hangs when i try to connect wirlessly to
ZyXEL VMG B Series.
I am using fresh install Mac OS 10.6.3 with
2Gb of RAM.
The same issue when i try to hooked up with LAN cable.
Any tips and adviced will be very very welcome, thanks in advanced to everyone!Hey there cutyscar,
It sounds like you are unable to connect to your router either by Wi-Fi, or ethernet. I would recommend trying the troubleshooting outlined in this article named:
Mac OS X: Troubleshooting a cable modem, DSL, or LAN Internet connection
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1317
Start with this step, and work your way down as needed:
Check all cables and power supplies
Make sure all the cables related to the modem are plugged in and firmly inserted. This includes the modem's power cord, the cable from the modem to the computer, and the cable from the modem to the outlet. To be sure a connector is properly inserted, disconnect and reconnect it. Check to see if the cables have been cut, chewed, or otherwise damaged.
If you have any hubs or routers, check their cables and power supplies. If you have more than one power supply available for a type of hub or router, try swapping the power supplies. A defective power supply may affect network traffic.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

DVD SP keeps hanging even after a fresh install
DVD SP keeps hanging on me. When I try and drag anything into a menu background, turn on the simulator or play a track.
I have tried re installing FCP suit 2, also tried un-installing it and installing again, I have even done an erase and install of OSX Leopard and and fresh install of FCP2 and I'm still having this problem.
I really can't think of any thing else I can try. This makes no sense to me at all.
Is anyone else having this problem with FCP2 and Leopard?Does it just hang permanently or does it beachball for 3 or 4 seconds and then come back?
Also, what type of footage are you working with? -
[SOLVED] Fresh Install, won't boot past grub
I did a fresh install of Arch (GPT partitioning table) with a 8 GB root directory, 138 GB home directory, 4 GB swap, and a 1007 KB bios boot partition. Everything went well, I got through the installation with no problems, but when I rebooted the computer. It showed this after the grub menu: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-UM-3 … 2014-06-22
So now my question is, was I supposed to do anything extra during the installation process? Or is this a hardware problem? Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Lubuntu, and Zorin OS works fine so I'm assuming I need to do something extra during installation...

ryukiri wrote:That only tells me how to make it a boot option...I assume I need to be chrooted from the install CD to do this.
You can do it one of two ways: boot the install cd/usb, mount all the partitions as in the original installation process, then chroot. From there you can just use pacman to install packages as it it were a normal system: `pacman -S linux-lts`.
There is, however, no need for the chroot. The alternative, and somewhat simpler, approach would be to boot the install media and mount the partitions as above, then use the pacstrap tool just like you did when installing the 'base' group: `pacstrap -i /mnt linux-lts`.
I think it is safer to arch-chroot because you still need to be chrooted to generate your grub.cfg "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg"

System wont boot after fresh install
Hello out there, i am in need of some serious help.I decided to upgrade my pc as she was showing signs of stress. so after alot of checking i decided on the k7n2 delta ilsr (future proofing in mind) amd 2600xp barton(333mhz) pc3200 512ddr
for the time being.
my problem is i cant get my system up and running, not even in safe mode.
I have tried alot of suggestions from tech supports and from these forums but with still no joy.
Everything seems to go pair shaped when windows is setting up, i have tried two seperate h/drives, win2k, winme (which i nearly got to safe mode with).
have been told everything compatible although will need to upgrade psu sooner rather than later and agp card later but both should be ok for now with what min drives i need.
error messages are
irql not less or even
boot drive innaccessable
config initialisation failed
somebody please help, spent whole of easter w/end trying which never went doen to well on the home fron (if you know what i mean)
am i doing something wrong, what should the cmos/bios settings be at.
my latest attempt was with min spec,: agp, 1 cdrom, 1 h/drive, etc.
sorry for the lenghy message but i am starting to loe hair over this now.
thanks in advance, sriosmorning people, (if your up yet, its 8am)
bought a new psu from pcworld last night. they only had one brand, jeantech, i hope this is ok, i think so, i know someone running this psu with a p4 2.8/ msi system with no probs
anyway its spec is as follows;
+5v +3.3v +12v -5v -12v +5vsb
35a 28a 17a 0.3a 0.8a 2a
200w 204w 1.5w 9.6w 10w
it also has extra 4 pin cpu supply, do i connect this as well as an alternative or do i plug in to boost supply to +12v @ 17a x2 = 34a, or does it not work like that?!
right then, i'm gonna set this all up again in a little while, so is there anything else i need to do or check.
i do have one more question though, i have win2k on a h/drive now so can i just unplug old m/board and put in new one, or do i have to do a fresh install and format the drive first and start from the begining
anyway must dash and thanks for your time and help, .....srios -
MacBook Pro Won't Boot Install DVD for Fresh Install
Hello All:
I just received my new MacBook Pro ( 13", 2.53 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD ) and I am unable to use the OS X install DVD to do a fresh install.
When I put the DVD in while in OS X, it recognizes the DVD immediately and seems to function fine but when I reboot to use the disk utilities, that is when the problem starts.
I get the grey screen, then the grey apple logo, and then the DVD drive spins up and appears to be loading. After about 2-3 minutes of waiting, the screen goes black and the system is non-responsive.
I've tried multiple times and ways (option key and 'c' key) to boot it with the same results.
When I put the OS X install DVD into one of my other Macs, it starts up the utilities without issue.
For all intents and purposes, the system seems to have no issues with the DVD drive ( can play movies and read DVD-R disks ) but I cannot boot from it for some reason.
Any ideas? Could this have anything to do with the fact that this system has the 256 GB SSD?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
- DanThank you for the repl Michael. It is greatly appreciated.
You are right, there isn't a need for a fresh install but being in IT, my natural instinct is to want to see how everything works if only out of my own curiosity. In this case the attempt to do a fresh install brought to light a potential issues.
I did indeed do the option key, the 'c' key, the disk utility option from the install media, as well as setting in the drive options of system preferences.
The install media is the media that shipped with the MacBook Pro so I would hope they shipped me the correct one but you make a great point and I will try double checking with them as well.
Thanks,
- Dan -
UEFI boot hangs with MSI GTX 960 installed
Wasn't sure whether to post this in the graphics forum or the motherboard forum, since both components are MSI.
I have a system with an MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) motherboard with the old v23.7 BIOS, and a Core i7-2600k Sandy Bridge processor.
I just bought an MSI GTX 960 Gaming 2G. However, after installing the new card, the boot hangs every time with a flashing cursor. If I put my old card back in (GTX 460), everything is fine.
I've read that a BIOS update is recommended for the GTX 960 cards. However, the newer BIOS versions for this motherboard always say not to install them unless you have an Ivy Bridge processor, which I do not.
I see the newest version of the BIOS is v25.8. There was another time I tried upgrading the BIOS in the past (to v25.6) and I had issues with it not saving my custom overclock settings for the i7-2600k, so I reverted to v23.7. So I'm reluctant to upgrade it now for that reason.
Anyone know if the v25.8 BIOS update will fix the problem with the GTX 960? Or is there something else I can try to get it to boot with the old v23.7 BIOS?Updating it to v25.8 BIOS did work. The GTX 960 works fine now.
But, I am now having the same issue I was having when I previously tried updating the BIOS: my overclock settings are never saved. Actually, that's not exactly true. I can set them in BIOS exactly how I want them, and they are always saved there. But once I boot Windows, the settings are reverted.
I reinstalled the Intel Management Engine drivers as well, but no luck.
However, the BIOS update did allow the GTX 960 to work properly, so I will start a different thread in the motherboard forum about this overclocking problem. -
Very slow Mac, compared to when running a fresh install
I was wondering if anyone could help me diagnose the reason for my mac being so slow. (Eg 1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds) And why it takes a long time to load a lot of things. I have restored this from a time machine partition, so I believe something has transferred over incorrectly resulting in this general sluggishness of the system.
I have tried disabling all Startup items, disconnecting all external devices, but to no real success.
Here's the boot log of the system below, where I've noticed it hangs after posting FIPS success.
I was wondering if anyone could point me to any of the things that look suspicious? I've tried, but I haven't been able to find out what is causing it, as I believe the process that is causing this sluggishnesh begins at startup.

why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
I have restored this
from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
Hope this assists. -
Fresh install keybinds stop responding [solved]
Hi there,
I've recently been having some issues with Arch. I did a fresh install because I'm running on a chromebook and need as much space as possible only have a 14GB SSD at present until I get round to upgrading it.
I previously installed Arch (i386) with no such issues, but I've recently switched to i3 WM and x86_64 using this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … tion_media. Last week I also installed a custom chrome patch
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … .27_Script and everything was working fine with this. I did a fresh installion of Arch about an hour ago and I'm mentioning this because it allowed me to install Arch 64bit directly from the dual ISO without having to modify the ISO itself so I'm not sure if that's the issue considering the 32bit installation worked from the same ISO.
Now I have some strange issues. Keybinds work fine when I boot up but when I open urxvt it seems to stop all my binds working. Similarly the same issue happens when I run dmenu and open chrome. Sometimes I can open multiple instances of the aforementioned before it stops working. The mouse icon changes as if it's trying to load something, but nothing opens and absolutely no binds work.
I've tried other WM's and get the same issues with urxvt and dmenu.
I have searched google but can't seem to find any related issues so I'm at a loss as to where to begin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Last edited by Gwynplaine (2014-11-20 16:24:37)It seems that the use of dmenu causes things to hang. I'll reboot and wait a few minutes and see if it automatically does it.
I have not modified any files since installation except enabling wicd and slim with systemctl and the modifications to .xinitrc.
Thanks for the information. I'll bear that in mind.
Edit:
So I rebooted and left the system for five minutes. After that I ran dmenu using alt+d (as defined in i3 config). Dmenu would not open and changed the mousekey to the loading icon and no other bindings would work again.
So I believe that the issue is definitely with dmenu.
Edit 2:
So a little bit more information on dmenu. I have installed it with every installation. My system is 64bit and I have enabled multilib. I installed it through pacman.
I'm going to disable multilib and re-install.
Edit 3:
Same issue. Actually seems worse now.
Edit 4:
I'm wondering if it could be due to this section of .i3/config?
# start dmenu (a program launcher)
bindsym $mod+d exec dmenu_run
# There also is the (new) i3-dmenu-desktop which only displays applications
# shipping a .desktop file. It is a wrapper around dmenu, so you need that
# installed.
# bindsym $mod+d exec --no-startup-id i3-dmenu-desktop
Edit 5:
Okay so after some testing it seems to be i3. I've re-installed, using the i3-git package from AUR. I'm installing Yeganesh and I'll see now how this plays out.
