Fresh install for ibook G4

Hi,
I just bought a used ibook G4 from a friend of mine. It's the 2005, 1.33ghz, 512mb ram. Nothing fancy but good as a secondary computer. However, I would like to start of fresh with the ibook. I would like to format it and start with a fresh OSX install. However, I have no clue as to how to do this.
First, which os should I install. It's on 10.4.11 right now. I did not get the OS dvd, so I don't really know if there is much to be done right now. I have the DVD from my macbook pro which is 10.6.2 but i'm guessing it's not that good of an idea to install this on the ibook.
Anyways, i'm sort of looking for help in order to get this ibook to ''factory specs''.
thx

Hello slitcher,
contact your friend and try to get the two
original install discs. Even if you upgrade to
Leopard Mac OS X v10.5 the original install
discs can come in handy.
Here is a link for your user guide in case you
do not have one.
http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iBook_G4_Mid_2005_UsersGuide.pdf
You iBook has a PowerPC CPU and your MBP has an
Intel CPU. The best the iBook can do is Mac OS X 10.5.8.
You have the latest Tiger which is Mac OS X 10.4.11
Without the original install discs or a third party
disk utility it would be hard to start from fresh or
to secure erase and install the OS.

  • Fresh Install for Mail, iCal and MobileMe

After several rounds with MobileMe support with what I thought were iCal syncing issues, I think I want to do a fresh install for all things Mail, iCal, and MobileMe (sync services).
Syncing stopped working on iPhone and turns out I may have had a corrupt Calendar file, which may have been caused by my tinkering with Mail when I had some issues...etc etc. Anyway, suggestions for what to do to start all over?

Read the Apple document Mac OS X v10.5, v10.6: Resetting the SyncServices folder and see if that helps.
Plus to reset any program in OS X just go to the folder /Users/YourUserAccount/Library/Preferences/ and find the preferences for the program you want to reset to default and throw that preferences file away. This will reset a program in OS X on your account back to default (in most cases).

  • Fresh Install for Resale

    Hi,
I'm planning to sell my old eMac. I've done an erase and install with the original 10.2 system, but on the restart it still requires my name, address, etc. for registration.
I'd really prefer to just have the computer start with the big flashy "Welcome" sequence that happens when you get the machine brand new from the factory... is there a way to do that?
Also, I have Panther upgrade discs I'll be including as part of the sale, if that would give me more options. I'd been planning NOT to install Panther since the new user may be planning to add Tiger instead.
    Cheers & thanks,

    > Hello JB.
At the restart and Welcome screen, don't enter any
information and shut down the computer.
Yeah, I guess that'd work... just force it to shut down with the power button?
Now that I've already entered my info, I guess I have to do another clean install to clear the ownership info, is that right?
    Thanks for the help,

  • Fresh install for Windows 8.1 Pro on GE40 2OC?

    Hi there,
I had just purchased the GE40 2OC notebook.  At the same time, I had also purchased the Windows 8.1 Pro upgrade separately.  I would like to have a clean install on my system.
My concern would be how to set up the 2 x 64GB SSD HDD under Super RAID, on top of the 750GB HDD.
Will it be automatic under the Windows 8.1 install?  Or are there specific steps to do so?
    Thanks,
    Chester

The raid array is already set up, you will just see it as a single destination drive and possibly need to load raid drivers during install.

  • Fresh install snow leopard - backup question

    So here's the scoop;
My 2008 iMac is slowing down. What is the most efficient way to backup settings and files to an external drive, wipe the drive and run a fresh install for maximum speed?
I installed snow leopard as an upgrade from leopard on the day it was out and love it, I just like to start from scratch from time to time and I have a lot of files right now. I basically just want to backup all the files and preferences as they stand now, and copy it back onto a fresh install.

    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions.
    2. Clone the system to an external hard drive.
    3. Boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and use Disk Utility to repartition and reformat the drive.
    4. Install Snow Leopard.
    5. Restore your data from the external backup.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive.
Source means the internal startup drive.
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • How to do a fresh install of tiger on g4 ibook

    Hi everyone,
I am wondering how I can do a fresh install of mac os tiger on my ibook with the cds that came with it. I am selling it and want to make it like its getting turned on for the first time and the person has to register and all that good stuff.
    Thanks.

So pretty much all I need to do is just insert the cds and follow the directions?
If you are referring to reinstalling, the answer is yes.
Should i zero my startup disk also or should zeroing the harddrive be enough?
The iBook's current startup disk IS the hard drive. When you boot from the install disc (CD/DVD) you will zero the hard drive in the iBook.

  • IBook G3 Will Not Boot - ?/face Icon on fresh install to new hard drive!!

Well, this is my first post here, but I hope someone out there may be able to help me....
I've got this iBook G3, and it will not boot. Originally, I got it and the hard drive was kind of suspect. I was able to install Tiger and use it, but it just stopped booting one day. I figured it was the hard drive, because it wouldn't boot to the OS even when stripped of the extra ram and after a fresh install via target disk mode from my Powermac. So, I changed the drive and reinstalled Tiger. It still won't boot.
Oh, and I've tried resetting the PRAM and resetting open firmware. Any ideas?

^^^I'm installing from a family pack and this is the only computer I'm running Tiger on...all of my others are Leopard. Which, now that I think about it, is another reason that cloning the drive to the iBook wouldn't allow it to boot. However, I know the drive is good at least, because my Powermac can boot from it.
Anyway, I put in a 512 mb stick, and it then will get to the grey Apple screen, where it hangs forever. If I do verbose mode, the last line says "creating RAM disk for /var/run"
It sounds like a RAM problem still. I think I have some actual Apple RAM laying around somewhere (maybe a 128 mb), as the stuff that's in it now is not "Mac Ram," but it is what was working when the computer was working before. I'm still at a loss. I know the method I'm using (restored Tiger DVD to partition on iBook due to a bad optical drive), as I've done it before. In fact, it's even the same image from the last time I did it, as I never deleted the .dmg file.

  • New Hard Drive- Should I use Time Machine for "fresh" install?

I have a first generation Early 2008 MacbookPro. Warranty just ended and I want to replace the hard drive w/ the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid. I'm getting a bunch of spin wheel action and things are just running slowly/sluggish. I'm questioning whether or not I should just do a real "fresh" install and load my applications onto the new drive or use TimeMachine. If I use TM am I not adding all the stuff/files that are not needed? Am I adding bloat that I've collected over the past couple of years? Is it better to start w/ a new clean operating system? I do have CS5 and some photo programs that I think I can reinstall. Anyway I wanted to get people's perspective.

It's usually best to clean your system up, and deal with any problems before doing major surgery.
With any other scenario, if something goes wrong, how will you know what it was, much less how to fix it?
I'd start with this: [Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509].
Then Verify your internal HD, and repair your Time Machine drive, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Then run a +*Repair Permissions+* on your internal HD, via Disk Utility.
Then replace the drive, do a full system restore and run for a while to be sure the new drive and everything else is ok. See #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for details.
Then start deleting the apps and files you don't need.
Note that, unlike Windoze, leftover files and apps may take up a bit of space, but don't cause any performace problems, unless they're actually running.
The main problems with trying to transfer things selectively are:
Permissions. If you install OSX and set up a user account, that account, even if it has the same name, may not have permission to restore the files on your backups or other drives.
Applications. Simple apps can be transferred individually, such as by restoring from Time Machine. Complex ones usually can't, as their installers put other files in other places. If you don't know what and where they all are, and restore them, too, the app won't work properly, if at all. But if you have all the original discs (and serial numbers/purchase keys), you can just reinstall them.

  • Please help with a few drivers for z60m after fresh install

I got a bad virus(several actually) that I could not eradicate. I was advised to just wipe and reinstall the OS since it is not under warranty anymore. I could not find the recovery disk, must have been lost inthe last military move could not find a replacement recovery disk at the IBM website so  I went out and bought an xpprof OS thinking it should not be that hard to find any drivers XP does not provide . I had no problems doing that on our acer laptop and a friends HP laptop before so was pretty confident.. Boy was I wrong this has been the reinstall from hell. I reinstalled the audiodrivers from theIBM website but the speakers still don't work. The laptop will not recognize the wireless, even after installing the drivers for that and I can't find anything out about why the dock does not work, I assume there are drivers for that too. I also have 4 ugly yellow question marks that I can't seem to get rid of in device manager.  At this point I am already out the price of XP Prof but I really need this laptop my husband took the acer laptop when he deployed to Afghanistan, only because I was confident I could get this one fully functional.  I see now my self confidence was badly misplaced ,even though I am working on a degree in computer technology this laptop is kicking my tush.
Is there anyone that could help please
    1. help me find why my speakers still dont work even though they are recognized as soundmax in device manager
I found several references to this issue in the forums but there does not seem to be a resolution
    2. help me figure out why my laptop suddenly (after the fresh install)does not know it even has a wireless capability even after numerous attempts at installing the driver(driver seems to install just finebut upon reboot there is still no wireless available
    3. figure out how I can get my dock to work again
the laptop has always worked great til now and all these things were functional before the virus and reinstall of the OS)
    4.  get rid of ugly yellow exclamation points under Other Devices, I am sure they must be important( I am sure at least one or more of them has to do with the wireless)
sorry this is so long Im  just frustrated thanks so much for anyone that can give some guidance on this

    hanaleia, welcome to the forum,
download and install ThinkVantage System Update, it should get the drivers for you. Please ensure you read down the site as you may need to install a patch for XP SP2.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Installing SSD in MacBookPro 5,1 (late 2008).  Need new Mountain Lion OS for fresh install?

I'm installing SSD in MacBookPro 5,1 (late 2008).  It is suggested that a clean install be done, then use migrate to move applications and files. I am upgrading from OX 10.6.8 which came with my machine and I do not have a disc for a fresh install.  How do I get a Mountain Lion OS as a upgrade to do an install on the new hd?  I have a back up boot and system hard drive and it could be migrated to the new disk then upgraded, but I would like to start fresh.  Any suggestions either way?

I found the answer in the forum....sorry for a repeated question.  I don't know how to deleat my original question.

  • Restore everything but OSX for fresh install

I am looking to do a fresh install of OSX to Leopard from Tiger. Is there any way I can restore everything from the Time Capsule EXCEPT the operating system - so that I can keep the fresh 10.5.8 install, but have all the rest of my programs/files back?
    Thanks.

For example - in Qmaster, when setting up a cluster, the generic name came up.
I don't use that app, so don't know why it's doing that.
But if you're using a different account from the old one for most everything, you may be able to delete that old account with far less trouble than erasing and trying to restore things, especially apps.
What's in that old account? Specifically, are any apps there?
So you are saying that it will ruin my TM back up if I somehow manage to get rid of her presence all together?
No. I was afraid you had data, etc., in the old account, and were trying to delete it, then restore backups from that account into yours. That's tricky, at best.
    I did the TM backup
the TM backup? You are letting TM do it's normal hourly backups, aren't you?
after changing to my new user/password. Does that help? I have all the apps and passcodes etc. So worst case is I start all over again. Ugh!
No, I see no reason for that. Unless you're having other problems, I'd recommend making sure there's nothing you need in the old account. Delete anything large & obvious. If there are any apps or data there that you need, move (or reinstall) them to the main Applications folder.
If everything still seems to work, then delete the user, but archive the home folder.
