Fresh install new SSD and boot from USB problem.

Hi!

I have a HP pavilion g6 -2031so that i just wanted to change the HD to a SSD. I got the filés setup on a USB stick using the Windows tool.

I cant really enter bios properly. I press Esc on start, and enter bios. BUT i can barely change anything! So The installation won't even start, it's just a blinking underline in the corner.

Hello Ericwei, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you're trying to setup a newly installed SSD and install Windows on it with your recovery flash driver. I will try to assist you with this.
It seems like you've encountered and issue getting into the BIOS to set the booth order?
When you try entering the BIOS, what difficulties are you having? Do you get any error messages?
You do mention that you're able to enter the BIOS but you can't do anything. Could you clarify what you mean by this. Are things greyed out? are you getting errors? Is nothing happening when your trying to navigate the BIOS?
You should be able to navigate in the BIOS to setup the Boot Order, to have the first be the usb flash drive. If that's done, then upon restart the notebook should be booting from there.
If this is set and it is not booting from the flash drive, what is it doing? Are you getting errors?
Please reply with as much detail as you can on the issue, with answer to the questions. This will allow me to assess the issue for you and provide further steps.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
I worked on behalf of HP.

• Can I install Snow Leopard and boot from software RAID 1 (mirror)?

I have a Mac Pro (quad core 2.66 GHz) on order for my office workstation. Yeah, I know new ones are probably coming out early next year but due to budget and upcoming projects I need one now. What I'd like to do is replace the pre-installed 640GB drive with two 1 TB drives and mirror them. The 640GB drive will be redeployed to another machine in the office. Can I boot from the Snow Leopard install DVD, go to Disk Utility, setup a RAID 1 with the two drives, install Snow Leopard to the mirror and then boot off the mirror set?
I've searched and found offhand comments to the effect that installing to and booting from a software mirror is OK, but I'd like to know for sure that it's OK. Any experience that you have with such a configuration would be nice to hear.

Yes. But before you do read the following:
RAID Basics
For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs. Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:
RAID Tutorial;
RAID Array and Server: Hardware and Service Comparison>.
Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?

• My mid-2009 MacBook Pro's hard drive is near death. I want to install a new SSD and work from scratch. Please help.

Recently, my mid-2009 MacBook Pro has been crashing when I close the screen ("it's having a problem recognizing when the screen is closed/open and deciding what to do, error overload etc."). It wasn't an SMC issue so I took it to an Apple Store, ran some tests, and decided my hard-drive is failing.
Not wanting to spend an insane amount of money on some "official apple hard-drive," I want to install a new 256GB SSD instead. Hoping to squeeze as much life out of this computer as possible (in January I upgraded from 4 GB RAM to 8 GB), I would like to try and start from scratch, i.e. back-up important folders, music, photos etc. and only take that to the new hard-drive. If someone could explain all the steps I need to take to safely complete this task (or point me in the direction of a guide) I'd appreciate it.
Potentially Important info:
Model: mid-2009 13'' MacBook Pro
Processor: 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Software: OS X 10.8.4
Some additional questions I have...
Should I be concerned with making a fully bootable back-up (not sure what that is called) as well? If so, what program should I use to create it?
How much more life should I try and push out of this computer? I'm an engineering student and really only use it for web-surfing, music, and
word-processing. The batter was replaced in March, the RAM was upgraded to 8 GB in January. When the battery was swapped, the trackpad went nuts so that's new too. Only other issues are a slightly loose audio jack and the left side of the screen being slightly wobbly (hinge is worn I'm told).

Well there is no "official Apple HD / SSD" in any regard, no worries there.
If as you say youre only using same for surfing and word processing, why the need for a SSD? You would not notice any speed diff. in use on either of those,....in boot times yes, but in word or surfing, not.
You can push it likely a few more years, for mere surfing and word processing,...many many years. Up TO the point that any major fixes become unrealistic relative to getting a new(ER) machine.
Concerned with a boot clone? yes and no. Its an ideal immediate recovery, since you cannot boot from Time Machine, ....in case of HD crash, recovery takes seconds from boot, or 20 mins or so from removing old and installing a clone. All the prosumers and pros have at least one updated clone of their prime machines.
You can do a "fresh install" if you choose, however if your current drive is FINE, why not merely clone it and save yourself some headache?...., but that is your prerogative of course. Ideally 2 drives, one to backup your data (you need that regardless of installing a new drive for sake of a backup/archive,...ideally 2 actually, not merely one).
You could clone internal to NEW SSD/HD , ...then offload unnecessary files to an external to free up space and clutter and run off the clone, and this would only take a couple hours......the clone itself takes approx. 40+ mins.
CLONE Apps :
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.

• HP ENVY dv6-7246us SSD Upgrade, Problem Installing Windows 7 with boot from usb/dvd disc.

Hello everyone,
I have recently purchased the dv6-7246us and have upgraded the HDD to a SSD. The problem I am having now is that I can't boot from the usb or a dvd disc that contains the Windows 7installation. Originally this laptop had an HDD with Windows 8. I have changed the boot order multiple time to boot from the USB Harddrive and the DVD/CD-ROM disc and still have no luck booting up from the installation. Is there a solution to this problem?
Thanks,
Robert
This question was solved.

Hi, Robert:
Did you go into the BIOS and change it to Legacy Mode?
I believe you need to do that in order to boot from another device other than the hard drive.

• Slow Boot Times after installing new SSD and Lion

Can anyone please help interpret why I'm having slow boot times? I have copied my console printout during the boot and it seems to be doing a repetitive action while booting.

• Format HDD and boot from usb?

My Macbook Air (2011) is very slow and I keep getting a warning message that the start up disk is full.
I would like to reformat the HDD and load Mountain Lion direct from a USB stick. Is this possible and what is the procedure.
Thanks
Rudy

Check out this article. If you don't already have a copy of the Mt Lion installer you'll need to download one. In order to download it you'll need to have enough free drive space, about 8GB. I've seen this turn into a chicken/egg situation :-(

• Weird Audio problem since installing new SSD and Reinstalling the OS and Upgrading Ram

I have a really strange problem in Premiere ( well the same thing happens with he native files outside premiere too! )
Some of my .wav and .wma files sound corrupt. At first i thought it was a buggy project file.
Then i checked some other files from projects waiting to be done and they were the same, heart attack time.
So i copied the apparent bad file to my laptop and it plays fine!
Then when i check some audio files from finished projects on my PC they sound corrupt too! And obviously they were fine when i actually finished the projects.
I've tried it in Premiere CC2014 and CS5, but it's not the program i now know.
I Googled "Audio codecs Windows7" but all the options appear to be malware , has anyone any ideas? IS there a codec pack i could try?
I'm running Win 7 Pro
i7 960 @ 3.2
24 gb ram
Nvidia GTX 480
Thanks,
Ronan

Got this sorted.

Hard drive packed up, but had Time Machine backup. I installed new ssd and upgraded to Mountain Lion, but I can't find iPhoto library and photos or iTunes songs? Is there an answer to this? A backup run did not install either photos or songs. Graham

Thanks so much but none of that helped. It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive. I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this. Guess I made my own issue!

• Compaq presario cq 56 172 sr - booting from USB

Hi everybody!
I have a problem in my notebook(named as in topic) & I have not solved it yet. Maybe here somobody can help me?
The problem is : BIOS can't see and boot from USB flash as from USB hard drive but it can see the USB flash as a "USB floppy drive" - and can't boot from it.
In BIOS booting device order there are a few variants of USB devices to boot from - USB floppy and a USB hard drive.
I have a USB flash drive (Transcend, 4 Gb) with ISO image on it. Trying to boot from it on other computers and notebook was successful but impossible on compaq presario CQ 56 172 SR (I'd like my notebook to boot from USB flash)
I set the boot devices priority like this:
1. USB hard drive
2. CD\DvD
3. Notebook's hard drive
when I putting in USB flash and reboot the notebook nothing is changing - I can see only Operation system of my notebook hard drive but NOT the operation system on my USB.
when I changing the boot device setting:
1. USB floppy drive
2.CD
3. NOtebook's HDD
My notebook can recognize the MBR on USB flash (it is GRUB) - but everytime hangs and only rebooting helps.
How do You think, what is the reason that notebook can see the USB booting device only as USB floppy but not as USB HDD??
P,s: thanks for you answering. I hope somebody already had solved this problem before me

What OS you have? Windows Version please

• How can i install snow leopard on my mac G5 using a command line and booting from an external usb rom, since my disk i have is not a bootable media

How can i install snow leopard on my mac G5 using a command line and booting from an external usb rom, since my disk i have is not a bootable media

Hi.
You simply can't. Snow Leopard is compiled in Intel binary only.
Good Luck.

• Can Leoprrd install on a external USB HD and boot from it.

hi, first post here.
I have serveral external usb hd. I wanted to know if i attach one to my aging G4 1 ghz 512 mb mac.
Put in Leopard Install disc in my dvd drive, will Leopard install on the external and boot from it.
this way I could somehow dual booy 10.4 or 10.5... Is this even possible.
Ps I also have a extrnal firewire drive but would perfer to install and boot from the USB port instead.
I know tiger didn't let me do this....but perhap Leopard will.

a Drive Partitioned in GUID will NOT boot to a PPC (G4,G5) machine. you need to Partition the drive using APM. APM will boot on both PPC and intel machines.
A GUID 10.5 startup will be reconized by the system startup prefrerence. but if you try to restart the computer using that startup, it will give you the missing OS icon and then revert back to the system drive.
Also I've noticed that you must be installing from a PPC systme to be able to install on an APM drive. If your on an intel drive, it will force to repartition to GUID before letting you install.
And since PPC doesn't support GUID, you can't install GUID while booted to a PPC.

• I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it. I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home

I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it. I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home, a MacBook Air for when I'm on the road, all with TB. Can a single external TB drive boot all three hardware configurations successfully? I've been told that differences in hardware configurations between the systems make this impossible. Is this correct?

Piece or peace of cake really though.
A quick install on new hard drive or SSD or 10K and less than an hour to move everything over properly.
YOU looked for a quick fix and found none and all the brick walls.
It is not days of work to do a clean install and migrate.
There are few if any apps that need to be freshly installed either though there are updates needed for them to be compliant, any driver or plugin also and that is done ahead of time with research.
And your backup or clone of your system is taken care of - you leave the old system boot drive 'as is' untouched.
Also, better strategy to move most all your home folder (except for its own ~/Library) to ANOTHER disk drive and not on t he system drive at all.
As for applications on its own drive or 3rd party, beeen there done that, even SSD or 15K SCSI - no benefit in performance or organization.

• Setting up OSX after installing a new SSD and moving HDD to optical bay

Hey all,
I know there are a tonne of other posts similar to this one in here, but I couldn't find the specific answers I was looking for.
Soon I'm going to remove my optical bay and put my current HDD in it's place, and install a brand new SSD where the original HDD once was. I'm comfortable with the hardware installation but am wary about what to expect on first power up afterwards.
I would like to ideally run OSX Mavericks and all of my apps (everything from Notepad to Premiere Pro) from the SSD, and leave all of my data on the HDD. I have an early 2011 13" Macbook Pro, model number A1278.
- When I first turn the computer on after the hardware switcheroo, what can I expect to see? How do I re-install OSX Mavericks onto the new drive? Am I right in thinking that Mavericks is merely an upgrade rather than a whole new OSX and that I will need to install Lion and then upgrade to Mavericks rather than just reboot immediately to Mavericks?
- How can I then remove Mavericks from the original HDD?
- Exactly which files do I need to move to completely relocate the apps to the new drive? Is it as simple as moving the entire applications folder over, or are there hidden files dotted all over the place that I need to consider also?
Thanks in advance,
Adam

Adam,
if your current HDD is a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s maximum throughput) drive, then you might find that you’ll have problems with it in the Optibay position. If this is the case, you’d probably be better off putting your SATA III drive into an external enclosure, and purchasing a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s maximum) drive to install in the Optibay.
If you have a SATA-to-USB or SATA-to-FireWire adapter, you can connect your SSD externally and format it with Disk Utility. After that, you could use a cloning utility to copy the contents of your internal HDD to your SSD (presuming that the SSD is at least as large as the amount of space currently used on your internal HDD), and then boot from the external SSD using Startup Manager to make sure that everything works well on it; that will save you from having to make sure that all of the scattered hidden files have been migrated. Once you’ve confirmed that your apps run well from the SSD, you can then install the SSD and move the HDD to wherever it’s going. An advantage of keeping Mavericks on your HDD is that you can boot from it if needed, e.g. should your SSD develop a problem.

• So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8. I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer. What do I do?

So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8. I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer. What do I do?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Reset Password. After resetting the password use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for startup and restart.
