Fresh install of Leopard, without losing settings and applications

Hi, my computer has gradually been getting slower and slower, and it was suggested to me that it could just be from all the program updates I've had to install over the years, and that an effective solution to get it back to better speed is to do a fresh install.
I'm not computer illiterate, but I do not want to stuff it up and lose everything. What is the best way to do a fresh install with the least hassle about setting it all back up again with files, settings and applications? I back up (sporadically, not as often as I should) with Time Machine on an external hd.
Easy to follow steps would be appreciated please!

It was suggested to you by whom? Software updates alone do not take up a ton of space (as they overwrite previous versions), and so should not be causing your problems. An archive and install, assuming you then apply all the software updates anyway, won't take up any less space or necessarily go any faster, given you'll restore all the apps, files, and settings you have now on a slow iBook.
How much free hard drive space do you have? Leopard really wants 10-15%, which for you (assuming your profile information is accurate) means bout 20G. If you have less than that free, that's likely the cause of your slow down.

  • Revert from Mountain Lion to 10.6.2 without losing files and applications?

I upgraded from 10.6.2 to 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion) on my iMac, but now I cannot use most of my software, nor my scanner (even with Image Capture) because they're mostly PowerPC based. I cannot afford to replace everything at this point. Can I revert to 10.6.2 without losing files and apps? How can I do it easily? And how can I save the Mountain Lion OS I downloaded so I can load it in the future without paying again?

If you have a backup, either via Time Machine or a cloning program, you can keep everything including the Mountain Lion installer. You shouldn't have to pay for the installer again because it is tied to the Apple ID you used to purchase it. Cloning programs and two backups are better and safer than one.

  • I have OS X 10.5.8.  Can I load Snow Leopard without losing data and then upgrade to Lion?

I am using OS X 10.5.8.  I have a disk with Snow Leopard on it, but I don't know if I downloaded it.  Can I download this Snow Leopard disk without risking a loss of data on my MacBook Pro?

If by "download" you mean "install," then you can install Snow Leopard over a Leopard system. But anything can happen, so it would be wise to backup first.
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from the Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Install Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Boot from the Snow Leopard installer DVD.  Follow the onscreen instructions. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Wipe and install OSX Leopard without the disk

    Hi everyone,
I need to wipe my iMac and reinstall OS X Leopard. I have the install disks, but my CD drive doesn't work and can't read the disk.
Is there a way for me to wipe and install OSX Leopard without the disk?
    Thanks.

You can turn the 2011 iMac into a Firewire Optical drive.
Put the Leo Install Disc into the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 iMac while holding t key to put it into FW Target Disk Mode, with a FW cable connect the the 2, boot older one holding Alt key, choose the Leo Install Disc to boot from.

  • Clean install of OSX while keeping settings and still cleaning out old junk

I there a way to do a clean install of Snow Leopard without having to completely reconfigure all my preferences, settings, and applications, but still clean out all the unnecessary and old unneeded junk that's hidden all over the computer?

Nope. The Mac OS X System and Library folder doesn't contain your unneeded and unnecessary junk all over your computer. Your Home folder and Library folder contained within, contain that junk you must be referring to. If you want to do some "Spring Cleaning", back up your data, reformat, and install fresh. Then you can install what you want, without your unneeded and unnecessary junk. Or, go through your Home/Library folder and delete the files for programs you no longer have installed. You can also go through your Applications and Utilities folder and delete programs you no longer use.

Thanks for the information!  My sister gave me the MBP for my daughter with Leopard installed.  I purchased Snow Leopard and installed it, then my daughter purchased Lion.  So I do have all the installers.  If iWork wasn't included with any of those, I guess my sister purchased it while running Leopard.  I'll have to contact her.  Thanks again.

When you installed Snow Leopard, Tiger was replaced, leaving your programs and files intact.
What is causing your freezing problem is unknown, you can take Kappy's advice and remove everything, but you lose your files and free iLife programs that came with Tiger/new machine.
The 10.6.3 disk you "upgraded" with has the full 10.6.3 on it, but no free iLife suit, so a erase and install will remove what you already have installed.
You can try to locate your problem without the erase and install method by running through this list of fixes.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
But before you do anything, backup your personal data off the machine to a extenal drive and disconnect.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Because if you have to follow Kappy's advice and wipe and install 10.6 fresh, it will cure your problem in nearly 99% of cases, but you have to rebuild everything. All programs and files.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If this is all too much for you, then STOP and call a local PC/Mac service or competant friend to assist you.
Yuo might need to install more RAM into the machine to make 10.6 run better as well.

  • Downgrade ( lion to leopard ) without losing programs/data

    Sup everyone!
I searched a lot and I can't find it anywhere. I need an answer to the next question:
How do I downgrade from Lion to Leopard without losing my (paid) programs?
See, I have Lion right now and I don't like it at all. I have the installation discs from Leopard. But I don't know if this is possible to downgrade.
I bought several programs, like MacKeeper and Microsoft Office 2010 etc. ( I do not have the discs or licenses of these progs ). So that's why I would like to know if it is possible to get back from Lion to Leopard without losing my programs.
I don't have progs specially made for Lion! =)
    Hopefully someone can help me!
My English isn't that well, don't blame me, I am from the Netherlands!
    Thanks already!
    Bolino

It would be far easier to to get Lion running properly. I'm quite sure that all of your problems are due to incompatible or poorly written third party software. Just remove those and you'll be fine. I suggest starting with MacKeeper.
I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.
Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

  • Install CC 2014 without losing CC

I know I should know the answer to this, but I'm overworked and can't focus.
I have CC apps on my main machine. I want to install CC 2014 without losing my CC installation.
I'm reluctant to click the "Update" button in the Adobe Update Manager because I don't know what's going to replace what.
Where do I go to control the download?

Quit the CC Desktop app first and then restart it so it updates. It should then show you the CC2014 apps (though for me is said Update on them rather than Install).
