Fresh install of solaris 10 x86 hangs after 'Configuring devices'

Hi All,
I just received a new SuperMicro server with an LSI MegaRAID SAS 9261-8i controller. While trying to install Solaris 10 it hangs after "Configuring devices". I checked the LSI page and Solaris 10 is supported according to them. Any ideas how to proceed?
Fairly new to Solaris on x86 hardware.
The system has a Xeon X5690 processor in an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC motherboard. The motherboard documents claim that not disabling usb 2.0 can hang an install. I have disabled the usb 2.0 in the bios but the system still hangs. Booting it with the -kd and -kv options don't give much information.
Any help is appreciated. I might be returning these machines if I can't get this worked out.
Cheers,
Steve

See if you can add the verbose option "-v" to the kernel boot options. I think you can get to the GRUB menu off the Solaris 10 install disk. That should tell you what device is causing the hang, or at least the last device that worked.
Also, can you try Solaris 11 and see if it gets past that point? A few years ago I has a similar issue with Solaris 10 on a Dell server. Solaris 11/OpenSolaris worked fine, though. IIRC I could work around the issue if I disabled the 2nd CPU - Solaris 10 had a problem bringing up the 2nd CPU on that Dell's CPU/MB config.

  • Solaris 10 hanging at Configuring Devices during installation

    Hi All,
    I am trying to install Solaris 10 via cd or net, but it hangs at Configuring Devices. This is an upgrade to the current Solaris 8 OS that is running on this system.
    Does anyone have any insight to this problem?
    Thanks in advance,

    Having the same problem here. Hangs at "Configuring devices" right after the SunOS license message. Didn't have any luck with "pci-reprog=off", so I still can't get past this point, but this could be because of my specific hardware. Did manage to figure out the GRUB kernel boot argument syntax though, from this article:
    GRUB and the Solaris 10 1/06 OS: The New Bootloader for x86 Platforms
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/articles/grub_boot_solaris.html
    "Properties other than boot-file can be specified on the GRUB kernel command line with this syntax:"kernel /platform/i86pc/multiboot -B prop1=val1[,prop2=val2...]Notice that commas are used between arguments. When I used spaces, only the first argument was understood. Found more info on booting from GRUB here:

    I tried turning off dma for my cd & drives, and also tried turning off acpi, but nothing worked. Maybe somebody else here can make progress with this info though.

  • Live Upgrade hangs at Configuring devices. on Sun V440

    Hi all,
    I am trying to upgrade a V440 which is running Solaris 8 2/04 to Solaris 10 8/07.
    I have patched the V440 Solaris 8 build to the latest recommended patch cluster, and have also installed p7zip utility and followed the recommended patching procedures in Sun Doc 206844.
    I have installed the Live Upgrade packages from the Solaris Media Kit (8/07) and successfully created the Solaris 10 Boot Environment based on the Solaris 8 boot environment, upgraded it and activated it.
    However, on rebooting, the new Solaris10 boot environment hangs at configuring devices. and fails to proceed any further in the boot process.
    Can anyone assist please?

    Done it!
    It seems the only way I could get the V440 to upgrade to Solaris 10 was to upgrade the alternate boot environment to Solaris 9 (which required a reinstallation of the SAN foundation kit - which might be where Solaris 10 was hanging), and then a further upgrade of the alternate boot environment to Solaris 10.
    I might try uninstalling the SAN foundation kit, and then an upgrade from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 and see if this confirms my theory. Will keep you posted.

    I'm troubleshooting a MacBook that hangs at start-up after installation of the 10.5.8 complete update. I've run Disk Utility (no errors), fsck (fixed a single error), and repair permissions (oddly, repaired a few on this fresh install). I've booted into verbose mode, and it appears that there's an infinite loop of:
    localhost DirectoryService[#]: Launced version 5.8.1 (v514.28)
    localhost ReportCrash[#]: Saved crashreport to /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/DirectoryService. . . .(it goes on, but it's just date info).
    Again, this is a fresh installation of 10.5. The only programs that have been updated are those updated through Apple Update. I did have problems installing the 10.5.8 update through the Update utility because "the package contents could not be verified," but the update installed fine after I downloaded it from Apple's site.

  • Help with oracle 10g install on solaris x86

    hi, i downloaded solaris 10 from oracle site (sol-10-u8-ga-x86-dvd.iso) and i have installed it on vmware. i was going through the installation guide for oracle 10 for solaris x86 and while on the pre-installation steps, i issued this command
    # /bin/isainfo -kv
    and it gave me
    # 64-bit amd64 kernel modules
    instead of
    # 32-bit i386 kernel modules
    as the guide expected.
    please what can i do, cos the guide says if i dont see the later, the installation cannot complete.
    thnx

    First check you Operating System Bit information whether it is 64 or 32 bit , for this first check any of the command path
    Example ls command
    $ which ls
    /usr/sbin/ls
    $ file /usr/sbin/ls
    It will show you whether your OS is 64 bit or 32 bit and accordingly download the software from below link ,if it is showing 64 bit os then you have to download 64 bit database software .

  • Forms Applet hangs after configuration of webutil

    Hi,
    I have Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 with Oracle Database 10g on Windows 2000 server. Browser is IE6
    Our application was working fine. But for one of the functionality, we used webutil and after configuration of webutil on AS, the application is not launching.
    Applet hangs showing applet initiated and in java console it shows
    Downloading http://localhost/forms/java/frmwebutil.jar to JAR cache
    RegisterWebUtil - Loading WebUtil Version 1.0.6.
    I have signed both frmwebutil.jar and jacob.jar.
    I have followed all steps mentioned in the document for configuration.
    I think still there is something missing.
    Please give some pointers on resolving this issue.
    Thanks
    AT

    Do the following:
    1. On client machine, exit all open browsers.
    2. If you are running Developer Suite, stop OC4J.
    3. Manually delete JAR cache. Delete all files in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Oracle Jar Cache
    4. Delete the following file (your JInitiator version may be different):
    C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\jinitiator13129.trace
    5. Open the Jinitiator Control Panel which can be found on the Windows Control Panel and add the following to the "Java Runtime Parameters" on the Basic tab:
    -Djavaplugin.trace=true -Djavaplugin.trace.option=basic
    Click on Apply and exit the Control Panel
    6. On the server, add the following to the formsweb.cfg:
    WebUtilLogging=on
    WebUtilLoggingDetail=normal
    WebUtilErrorMode=Alert
    6. If the server is a Unix platform, recompile the form and ensure that you use the COMPILE_ALL=YES option.
    7. Retest one time. Do not try more than one time as this will create too many entries in the trace file.
    8. After the failure has reproduced, exit the form and the browser. Open the new jinitiator13129.trace file and carefully review. It is likey you will find the cause of the problem in this file. At minimum, a hint should be offered.

    Hi Joe,
    thanks a lot for your hint, the problem is solved with editing /etc/release.
    There should be a user-information pointing to the source of the problem, just aborting
    the install-script is not very nice.
    Do you know whether this "/etc/release-abort" is present with update to LMS 4.01 install-script
    and other patches?

  • [SOLVED] Fresh install, Two failures and hang

    Solution: Needed to mount my boot partition (EF filesystem) to /boot/efi instead of /boot. Using rEFInd
    Hi, so I've read the beginners guide inside and out and I'm having the most difficult time installing arch.
    I've probably wiped it at least a dozen times and everything seems like it is going to start up and I get a few failures on startup which results in a hang afterwards
    1)
    [FAILED] Failed to start Create Volatile Files and Directories.
    see 'systemctl status systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service' for details.
    2) (this one cycles 6 times before hang)
    [FAILED] Failed to start login service.
    See 'systemctl statuse systemd-logind.service' for details.
    x6
    Then I get
    [OK] Reached Target Multi-User System.
    [OK] Reached target graphical interface.
    then the hang where I can't do anything but hold down my power button.
    I tried restarting the system with my liveCD (usb) and mounting up my directories and looking into the systemd files but they just say they load ok and there aren't any issues.
    I've scoured google and really can't find anything to fix this issue. Any advice would be welcome for sure!
    I know I can install Arch on this laptop because I was successful once. But then I wiped it to try out OpenSUSE, and since then I can't get passed these errors.
    Thanks in advance!

    Edit: Because there are two linux boot managers that prompted me to explore them in my options. The first one 0000 returns an error saying a bootable device needs to be inserted. The second one 0001 loads the boot screen but displays the error. My harddrive just displays a blinking cursor that doesn't do anything. Almost as though after the errors I get through the linux boot manager, it passes on to my hard drive and it can't do anything....
    ran the create microsoft directory code and such. Rebooted. No change. I'm going to run the other debug things you mentioned.
    Tried booting from UEFI shell. When I ran cd \EFI\arch I get "target directory not found" and \EFI\archlinux also gets target directory not found
    OK it is not entirely clear what the boot process is doing here and it looks like the most likely problem is a gummiboot config error.  Your boot order in the efibootmgr command shows that entry 0001 is the first one that it will try which you have as "linux boot manager" - which presumably will find the gummiboot entry but perhaps it is not configured correctly.  Certainly you don't have any \EFI\arch or \EFI\archlinux directories since you previously quoted the contents of the /boot/EFI/ directory using the ls -l command. in \EFI\ there are only a Boot and a Gummiboot directory.
    I am not clear why you had to run the command that created the boot entries twice but presumably the entry at boot0000 is likely invalid from the first attempt. You can use the efibootmgr command to delete nvram entries as well as recreate them.  I expect it might be a good idea to delete entry 0000, and maybe also 0001 and then create a new entry yourself using the efibootmgr command.
    When you say that entry 0001 "loads the boot screen" - do you mean that it does successfully start the gummiboot bootloader but that gummiboot then fails to load the kernel? If so then that would suggest that the problem lies with the gummiboot configuration files, but that the uefi boot process does start correctly and loads gummiboot.  If that is the case then I would probably delete the nvram entry 0000 and then make sure that the default order was showing that the first entry that will be tried will be gummiboot (which seems to have its entry as "linux boot manager".  I don't use gummiboot myself so I don't have knowledge of what its boot screen looks like.
    You can use the efibootmgr command to write a new entry similar to :
    efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sdX -p Y -l /EFI/Gummiboot/gummiboot.efi -L "Gummiboot"
    where sdX is the drive you have for ESP, and Y is the partition number. So in your case sdX is sda and Y is 3 if your partitions are as you reported previously. Using this command will then give an entry in the nvram called Gummiboot rather than "linux boot manager".  For the meaning of the parameters see the output of the command "man efibootmgr".
    Check the man command for efibootmgr to see how to remove and reorder the boot entries in nvram. Make sure that the entries and boot order are sane before trying to reboot. Also make sure you only delete the entries that you created and not the ones that will boot to the usbkey or the CD.
    If this does start Gummiboot correctly then you need to diagnose why gummiboot is not loading the arch kernel correctly. You can follow the wiki page at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gummiboot and set up a manual entry to load the arch kernel as the file /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf containing:
    title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=PARTUUID=14420948-2cea-4de7-b042-40f67c618660 rw
    Here the PARTUUID value to the right of the = sign is the value relating to your root partition which is in your case the output of
    blkid -s PARTUUID -o value /dev/sda1
    Perhaps this will help pinpoint where the problem lies.  Certainly it is looking increasingly like your gummiboot config files are where the boot fails.
    If you did want to try to launch your arch kernel from the uefi shell then boot to uefi shell v2 as you seem to have tried before. In your case you will need to tell the uefi shell where the kernel and initrd files are so presuming that your files system is defined as fs0 then from the shell in your case it would then be:
    > fs0:
    > cd \EFI\
    > vmlinuz-linux root=PARTUUID=14420948-2cea-4de7-b042-40f67c618660 rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap initrd=EFI/initramfs-linux-img
    Since the kernel and initrd files in your case are named  vmlinuz-linux and initramfs-linux-img respectively.  Again the numerical value of the PARTUUID is as before the output of the blkid I quoted before.
    You only need to change directory to \EFI\ since your kernel and initrd are in /boot in your case.  All of these commands have to be carefully adapted to your specific case and can't just be cut and pasted from the wiki entry which only has sample commands in many cases.
    I hope this helps.

    Are you saying that a tryout of Premiere Elements 13 is crashing on you after you select Video/New Project from the Welcome Screen?
    What computer operating system is the program running on?
    1. Did you install the program with Windows Firewall(s) disabled? (Assumed on antivirus was ever installed).
    2. Are you running the program from a User Account with Administrative Privileges?
    3. Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer with the Premiere Elements13 tryout?
    4. Is your video card/graphics card driver version up to date according to the manufacturer of the card?
    If you have not already, please do the uninstall/reinstall in the following scheme
    1. Uninstall, routine Control Panel way.
    2. Free ccleaner run through (regular and registry cleaning parts) to get rid of leftovers from all incomplete uninstalls and
    reinstalls.
    CCleaner - Download
    3. Reinstall the program with firewall(s) disabled. (Assumed no antivirus installed).

But when I installed a CC on my home laptop (PC with Windows 8.1) after removing CS6 trials, the apps (Ps and Ai) do download, install and launch but quit just after showing a glimpse of interface.. • Apache Hangs after 1.0.2.1 upgrade

    I've upgraded to iAS 1.0.2.1 from 1.0.2 on NT. The apache listener comes up okay on startup. When I try to access a portal configuration though the browser just hangs until it times out. There is no error message returned to me. This behavior exists when trying to connect to a portal 3.0.7 install that worked under the old 1.0.2 install as well as a fresh 3.0.8 portal install that I created with the new Portal Configuration Wizard.
    The behavior is such that when I try to access the portal page the disk drive cranks and the CPU spikes for about 5 seconds and then it just sits there. If the database is not running I get an error message so the inital call is probably making some sort of DB contact, however no Portal Homepage. Any suggestions are very welcome.null

    I just upgraded from 1.0.2.0 and have the same issue. So I uninstalled the 1.0.2.0 instance and did a fresh install and it still hangs trying to get to the public home page. All of the config pages work ok.
    What is up with this?

    I logged a tar with Oracle support and it turned out my problem was with duplicate entries in the zone.properties file. Here is the fix from Oracle Support.
    I see serveral duplicate entries in the zone.properties. The following are the lines that have duplicates. Check to see if I missed any and then remove the duplicates. After that bounce the http listener.

    repositories=D:\Oracle\iSuites\Apache\Jserv\servlets\ChartServlet.jar
    repositories=D:\Oracle\iSuites\Apache\Jserv\servlets\AppLoader.jar
    servlet.page.code=oracle.webdb.page.ParallelServlet
    servlet.chart.code=oracle.webdb.chart.ChartServlet
    servlet.apploader.code=oracle.webdb.apploader.AppLoaderServlet
