Fresh install on a MBP 15" (early 2008)

I am going to install a fresh 500 GB Seagate Momentus XT into my MBP 15" (early 2008). I wish to do a fresh install of LION.
I have made an install disk for LION.
Will this work, any help will be greatly welcomed.
Thanks

You said you have a Lion install cd right? Boot to that disk. Then run the installer. The reason why the other disks wernt working is because they are UPGRADE cds. You need Leopard on the hard drive to use them. But the Lion cd does not need Snow Leopard to run. I myself have done a clean install of Lion using a cd. So, boot the Lion cd (be patient, can take a long time to boot to the cd), and then click Reinstall OS X Lion from the utilitys screen. Follow the installer and you should be good to go. Post back if you have any more problems!!!

That model has a known fault in that Nvidea sold Apple and other computer manufacturers bad GeForce 8600M GT video chipsets that failed eventually. Apple had a program that repaired this at no cost to the owner but it expired almost two years ago.
If this is what happened to yours, and the symptoms suggest so, the only proper fix is a new logic board and I amd pretty sure Apple no longer has parts. When my Late 2007 MBP (same faulty chipset) failed, Apple told me there were no more parts and they could not even do the fixed-rate "depot repair" on mine even though I was willing to pay the ~US$300 for the repair.
The early 2008 MBP is on the vintage and obsolete list:
Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support
The fact that yours is shown as "vintage" means Apple will not work on it but an independent service provider MAY be able to get the parts from Apple. However, as so may new logic boards were required to satisfy the repair program, from a practical standpoint boards for these are hard to find.

  • MBP A1260 (Early 2008): Won't start, black screen, continuously lit LED - bad logic board?

    Hello everyone!
I'm having a rather serious issue with my MBP A1260 (early 2008) running the latest version of OSX 10.5. This is what happens (or doesn't happen) when I start it:
Usual start-up sounds (fans, HDD, Superdrive)
    No chime at startup
Blank screen (I even can't see anything if I hold it against a light source)
The LED is on continuously. Bright at first, then after a second only dim
No backlight of the screen, no keyboard lighting
No reaction to pressing the volume or brightness keys, even after waiting for a while (the OS isn't password protected)
I tried a couple things and googled for a bit. This is what I've tried so far:
Plug in an external monitor - no signal
Removed the battery, used an old battery (which doesn't hold too much power anymore, but is working) - nothing
Restarted with alt-key pressed to bring up the bootcamp menu - nothing
Reset PRAM and NVRAM (P+R+opt+cmd at startup) - nothing
    Reset SMC - nothing
    Removed all RAM - nothing
Tried all combinations of RAM modules and RAM banks individually - nothing
As you can see, I've already tried quite a bit to get my computer back up, but there's been no success so far. As far as I can tell, this thing's logic board is broken, which would be a prohibitively expensive repair at about 600€ to 700€. I know the logic board is basically the whole computer, but that's an insane amount of cash for a four year old computer.
Do you wise people have any other ideas how to get this thing running again?
If not, I can only come up with three options:
Sell the MBP on ebay as broken
Buy another A1260 with a working logic board and exchange it or
Pay for the insanely expensive repair
    Do you have other ideas?
Luckily, I have another early 2011 MBP, which I'm using right now. But to be honest, it may be the last mac I ever own.
Anyways, I'm thankful for all responses. I promise to keep you updated if I get the machine running again.

    Any ideas?

  • MBP 15" Early 2008 No Numpad and Numlock?

I have a MBP 15" early 2008 model. I am unable to figure out how can I use a numpad on this keyboard? My keyboard is identical to the one shown in this picture:
    http://www.gadget.co.za/imageLib/HomePage/SeriousHardware/MacBookProKeyboard.jpg
Please help figuring out how to use numlock and numpad on this keyboard. I have tried using fn+f6 and all other random configurations that I found online but am still not able to use the numpad. Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks

NumLock key has been taken out from early 2008 MBPs. Here's an exerpt from MacWorld review confirming it.
    From MacWorld review:
One thing that has changed from the previous MacBook Pro is the row of function keys at the top of the keyboard. The location of the media, volume, and keyboard illumination keys has been changed, there are new keys to control Expose and Dashboard, and *the NumLock key (as well as the rest of the numeric keypad) is now gone.* However, the keyboard is nice and springy and has a comfortable, non-spongy feel.

  • Problem installing Win7 64 bit on early 2008 iMac 2.66 GHz

I have read posts elsewhere that, contrary to what Apple says, it is possible to install 64 bit Windows 7 on an early 2008 iMac 8,1. The problem I'm having is that I can't get the iMac to boot from the 64 bit Windows 7 install disc. The error I'm getting is "Bootmgr is missing". I can view files on the disc just fine when I'm in OS X, so I know the bootmgr file is on the disc. But it refuses to boot from it. I know this hardware can support 64 bit cause I can boot OS X 10.6.2 into 64 bit mode.
Anyone else run in to this? Thx for any help.

Thanks Hatter. That did the trick. Actually, the link you sent me lead me to this site:
    http://blog.andersonshatch.com/2009/01/11/windows-7-x64-on-a-macbook-pro-guide/
    That site links to this:

and that's what I used to create a DVD that was bootable by my early 2008 iMac.

i'm having the hardest time installing my newly purchased (through newegg) evga geforce 8800GT video card into my mac pro (8-core model purchased in early 2008.)
when i first installed it and booted up, i heard a nonstop beeeeeeeeep. i called evga and they quickly explained to me that the supplemental power cord for the video card wasn't plugged in.
this is where my problem lies: i can't find where to plug in the supplemental power cords! it looks like two white plastic pieces each with 3 pins in them. do i need to buy another adapter? do i have the wrong card? i'm searching all over google for help and even watched a couple youtube videos but can't seem to find anyone whos having the power cord problem like i am. thanks in advance!

    thanks so much for responding.
this is the card i purchased: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130319
is this not the same one as the one you sent me?
i saw those "aux ports" as noted in the link you sent me. but i dont think the cable i have connects to those.
the aux power cable that came with my video card is shown in this picture:

  • Dark spots on MBP 17" (Early 2008) screen

The dark spot has returned. Since my last post (copy below), I've had it into the genius bar for service, and they ended up having to ship it to a repair depot. I am just inside of my 90-days warranty, and it has happened again. I do not know what causes this, as my machine is my baby.
It's like a grey shadow on part of the screen, but it appears clear as day on a white screen (browser, photoshop, whatever turns all the pixels white).
I'm afraid that my last experience with Apple support was AWFUL! My computer was being repaired under AppleCare, but they kept it for 2 weeks before performing any work. I am afraid that if I go t get it repaired now (that I am no longer under AppleCare, and do not have an AppleCare plan), that they'll basically tell me I'm SOL. This shouldn't be happening again.
Dark spot on 10 month old MBP non-glossy screen
    Posted: Feb 17, 2009 9:26 AM
My screen has developed a dark spot near the center of the screen. The MBP itself has been in a hard Speck case since the day I got the computer. No drops, and has been cared for very well. I am still under warranty. Is this something AppleCare or Warranty will cover?
Mac Book Pro (Early 2008) Mac OS X (10.5.6) 4GB RAM

well... you were never under applecare to begin with, that is a purchased extra.
you were under the original warranty which has now expired, which means you are NOT eligible to enroll the machine into applecare.
Call the 800 # & speak with customer relations if you have to. they should be able to fix the machine again as the repair is covered for 90 days.
if you wish not to send it in, they can issue a ticket # which you can then take the machine to a local auth. service center. they can use the ticket / incident # to order parts & fix your machine.

I would like to install windows on my mac because I am in engineering school and there a lot of programs I'd like to have on my computer that only run on windows.  And yes I'd like to use bootcamp and I know there must be a way to install off a flash drive.  Do you know of a way?

  • Installing Yosemite on Mac Pro Early 2008

I seem to be having a problem installing Yosemite on my Mac Pro, 2008. This computer is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, fully up to date. I checked Apple's website to check compatibility and I am understanding my machine is compatible. When I go onto the app store, I get a window saying "OS X 10.10 is not compatible with this system."
    The system contains:
2 x 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon Processor (Quad Core)
8 GB Ram DDR2 ECC      (Does it need to be DDR3?)
    Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
    NVIDIA GeForce 120 512 GDDR3
    750GB HDD
    10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I own a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina (15" i7 2.3ghz, GeForce 750) and I connected my laptop to the Mac Pro VIA FireWire 800 (used thunderbolt adapter) and set the Mac Pro into "Target Disk Mode" and used the Yosemite installer and installed it to the HDD on the Mac Pro, but when I booted up the Mac Pro (after it installed), I got the blinking folder of death (Instead of Apple logo, flashing folder with question mark). At this point I had to use the Snow Leopard install disk, and start the Mac Pro using the disk, wipe the HDD and reinstall Snow Leopard and go back to phase one.
Please let me know what I can do.
    Thanks!

You said "2 x 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon Processor (Quad Core)"
Do you really have a two dual-core processors? If so then you do not have a 2008 Mac Pro. The 20 came with qual core processors. If you click on the Apple icon in upper right and select About This Mac what model Maac is listed? A 2008 is 3.1. A 2006 is 1.1 and 2007 is 2.1. Only the 2008 and later can go to higher than Lion without a hack

  • Unable to do fresh install of my MBP Retina

i just bought a 2nd hand retina macbook pro, i am trying to do a fresh reinstall. however when i tried to do a recovery, it comes to a stage when i have to enter my apple ID. once i enter the ID it says this id has not purchased mountain lion. then i am unable to continue.

    Read this, http://www.macworld.com/article/1165337/create_a_bootable_lion_install_drive_for _newer_macs.html
Basically you have to do Internet Recovery (Alt+cmd+R) select "install fresh install of 10.8" but you need to select an external Hard Drive to download it to, once its downloaded and the computer restarts, before it reboots, unplug your ext HD, then reboot holding alt, and select your external HD, follow instructions to re-install and select your internal HD to install the operating system onto.

  • New fresh instalation of 15" MBP fails at 36%.....MAC OS X

    Hello,
I'm trying to install a fresh copy of MAC OS X on my MBP 15" I5 500Gb, (a very jong MAC user deleted some core files :-(
When I'm booting from the original dvd the setup is starting, the whole process of fixing the drive has been done, the setup is detecting that a new instal is needed, the setup start's but @ 36% the GUI is given the yellow mark that some files cannot be coppied and is aborting the installation.
By rebooting the installation is starting again but, it still fails at the same point.
Can somebody help me out with this. Writing this on a windows pc is painfull enough !
    Thanks
    Marcel

When booting from CD open Disk Utility at the top.  Try erasing the disk (500GB) and format to "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)".  Then install from scratch and you should be all set!

  • Benchmark Discrepancy (MBP 17 Early 2008)

    All,
I use my MBP about 18 hours a day. Over the last couple months (maybe since the 10.6 upgrade) I have had the nagging feeling that my performance was actually better in the "better battery life" mode. Tonight I downloaded Xbench and ran it. The results were surprising. (I have posted the fill results of each test at the end.)
    The system is a stock MBP (Early 2009). 2.66Ghz, 320gig 5400, 4gig Ram. I am running 10.6.1.
I ran two test in each mode. The first two were run with an uptime of just under 5 days, with normal sleep and charging cycles. Just like I use my MBP every day. The overall results are as follows:
    Better Battery Life (normal operation):
    121.42
    Higher Performance (normal operation):
    118.84
Next I rebooted the computer for each graphics mode switch. These test were run after system boot. With a delay for login processes to stop:
    Better Battery Life (fresh reboot):
    120.25
    Higher Performance (fresh reboot):
    119.17
Can someone help me out with this. I expected the numbers to be wider. And I would never have expected the integrated card to outperform the discrete card. The worse part of it all is that the video on the integrated card actually beat the discrete card every time.
Is there an issue with the graphics card drivers for the 9600GT in 10.6? Has anyone else seen these types of results?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Matt Simmons

OpenGL and Quartz benchmarks are pretty much standard. It would not matter the algorithm, I don't believe, the test is how fast the video card can draw different things in the test. Sure there might be one spot that the integrated card outperformed the discrete card. But in ALL test? It doesn't make sense to me. Not at all.

  • Can't install Windows 7 on my early 2008 iMac

    Hey Guys,
I wanted to install Windows 7 on my iMac 24" (3.06 GHz, 4GB RAM, 8800GS)
but everytime I boot up from my CD, it is showing me a black screen with a white flashing cursor. I don't know whats wrong, because 6 months earlier I installed it without any problems (and deinstalled it for more space on my HD) , but now (BTW: I've upgraded to Lion) I'm having this awkward problem?
    Any ideas?
    thx

Are you trying to install Windows 7 using Boot Camp? If you are then please post in the correct forum, the Boot Camp forum.

  • Will the Win 7 Upgrade work on a fresh install on an MBP?

    Hello,
If I want to install Windows on a new partition on my MacBook Pro, will it work if I use the Microsoft Windows 7 Professional UPGRADE (found on this page http://www.microsoft.com/student/office/en-au/default.aspx)?   Meaning, do I need to have a previous version of Windows already installed for this to work (since it says Upgrade)?
Is there a specific version of Windows 7 that I need to be able to run XP programs on the MBP?   For example, Ultimate, Professional, Home?
Should I get the 32-bit or the 64-bit version and why?
    Many thanks!

    Hi,
I'm not sure whether it's legal, but it's possible to use the upgrade version of Windows 7 to perform a clean install.  Simply install it once, then re-install over the top.  The second time you do it, it'll recognise that you've installed over a previous installation of Windows, and properly accept an upgrade license key.  I've done it and it works.  For more details, just Google
Regarding XP in Windows 7: go to the Microsoft website and look up a comparison of the various Windows 7 versions - you should see that only some have the Windows XP Compatibility option.
As for 64-bit or 32: it depends. Windows 7 is not so forgiving (as OS X) when it comes to using 32 bit drivers with the 64 bit OS, so that, in my case, I can't use a piece of external sound hardware with Windows 7 64-bit because the drivers are only available for the 32-bit version.  So, you'll have to examine your needs and see whether 64-bit would break anything vital.
    Good luck,
    S.
