Fresh install reboots to "Unresolved kernel trap(cpu0)"

I have a G4 laptop on which I just did an erase and install and the first reboot after the install resulted in a cpu panic. Oh joy.

I will update this thread as things progress (or not)...

Next, it immediately asked me to do a sofware update which installed Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 Client Update. This worked fine, things seem to be stable.
I voluntarily restarted the laptop and it reboots quickly. All looks well but I'm not sure I will be installing this on my desktop systems until the first OS X update is available.

Additional notes:
All attempts listed below give me the same "-Error" stated in the Subject line. Just can't pinpoint it.
a.)Disk used: Tiger retail, 10.4 Black disk, gray X.
b.)Computer has 10.4.11 installed and boots up fine, no other quarks with the machine. Just can't boot from Tiger DVD to reinstall the OS.
•The OS X Leopard DVD I have will get me to the pick your language screen, I select English.. -Error., I'm PPC, need Intel chipset to use that disk.
Things I've Tried:
1.)Reboot from G5 DVD drive. -Error.
2.)Reboot from a Targeted DVD drive on a G4 Powerbook Running Leopard for PPC.. -Error. (don't have this disk, borrowed laptop)
3.)Removed pair of OEM RAM & reboot from DVD. -Error
• Removed after market RAM., reboot., -Error.
4.)Made an Image of the Tiger DVD onto a new disk. Reboot. -Error
5.)Took an image file of Tiger I came across, made a DVD of it. Reboot -Error.
6.)Took out the HD, and replaced it with a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 - 300GB SATA150. Reboot to any DVD I own... -Error.
7.)Tried Booting off an image File through Target mode on the G4 Powerbook's Desktop. Worth a shot, but nope. had to check.
8.)Booted up with no mouse/keyboard pluged in, just the box & monitor. Held down the "c" key to boot DVD. -Error.
9.)"Tried" to replace the Internal DVD drive, got the two outside screws on the underside loose w/ an allenwrench. Cant get to the back two to take them off tho., On top of that the Power & SATA cables are so short can't see getting in there to take them off & put bak on. Mission accomplished Apple.. If theres something I am not doing then I apologize, but what else can one do? Its a Mac, things should be easy.
*During this error I get no LED or Power Light Codes. (Blinks etc.)
When Booting to DVD drive I just can't get it past the Grey apple on boot, the shade draws right after, and I get the error in my subject line with all the developer coding that comes after.
Any Ideas? Or would the best advice be, take it to the Apple Store.
Is there a ballpark estimate on how much I am looking at for them to break it down and tell me whats going on?

That is the Retail 10.4 disc, but I think that G5 might require dvds for 10.4.2 (8E90)...

Unresolved Kernel Trap: Booting & System Errors.

The computer has been Crashing more and more frequently as of late.
The latest report gave me this:

We have ran a hardware check and it returned negative regarding any hardware defects.
I have also used Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer all of the old hard drive onto a different one (Not a newer one, just one that was being used for storage, that our older OS4 was on.) We still seem to be getting the same effect (although it is not near as sever) after having transfered the data. We completely wiped the old hdd an reconverted it into a storage drive, and it seems to be able to read & write data efficiently (although, I should note, the entire system seems to be slower than it was; it was slower even before we swapped drives, which leads me to think RAM?). Never the less before we swapped drives, we could hear the old drive randomly spin at very high speeds. (In turn, this caused the fan to also spin at a very high, and unusual, RPM.) We were experiencing, during this time, system failures and freezes (where nothing would respond, no Mouse or Keyboard interaction, eventually resulting with a system restart that would not always restart).
The information is completely backed up and we have performed a system reinstall (Not a fresh from scratch system re-instal, but a system reinstall none the less.)
I believe the hard drive/RAM may be failing, but am otherwise unsure. Does anyone have any idea what my problem may be???

Try booting from an external drive (firewire) if you can and see if the problems persist. That might isolate it being a particular drive issue.
I think on your model Mac the fans are controlled by software. If the system is crashing the computer automatically goes into fan overdrive to prevent overheating.
If you have multiple RAM chips try pulling all but the minimum required and see if the problems go away. Swap and test again until you have it isolated.
There's a utility called Memtest that's supposed to test RAM.
Apple Hardware Test not showing anything isn't proof nothing exists. Sometimes it helps to run an extended test.

It would be helpful to know which threads crashed, though the combination of issues suggests a hardware issue.

Thank you for the feedback, I am already in the process of doing those steps before I wrote this question. The reason I am posting this is because I would really like to see if others have experienced problems with this. I want to be prepared with information when I have my appointment with the genius bar (this is my production mac and I need to finish up a project before I can get some known issues fixed).
By knowing if others have seen issues with cpu 2 this will help me in understanding the problem and know if I'm getting the correct information from the genius bar. IE I don't want to be back at the bar with my HEAVY mac pro trying to troubleshoot this over a long period of time if someone here has seen a similar message and I can shortcut what might be a long and tedious process of fixing this.

What is an unresolved kernel trap

I am preparing the G4 iBook to give to a friend and have eresed the HD, installed Leopard and upgraded to 10.5.8. I am now installing software etc but it keeps having kernel panics and the Problem Comments note an "unresolved kernel trap."
The last KP occurred when I set about using Disk Utility to fix permissions in the hope that would solve the problem - that was before I had spotted the u k trap phrase in the report.
Until now the computer has worked for nearly 9 years without going wrong (worn out keyboard replaced with OEM about a year ago). Does anyone know what this is and how it might be located and fixed please?

More Unresolved kernel trap(s) - Hoping you can Help?

Hoping someone can translate some of these numbers to help me resolve this ----
I have run all disk utilities from install disk (repaired perms, verify & repair disk), Diskwarrior (found repeating japanese font errors), memtested (all o.k.), booted w/ one RAM then the other, swapped RAM around in slots. Have run Apple Hardware Test (O.K./Passed) and tried the troubleshooting tips @ thexlab.com... I am doing tests with no usb peripherals connected -- but do use bluetooth mouse & keybd in normal operation.... havent had probs in the past using them.
....But the freezes/panics continue. (some other crash logs @ http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1229276&tstart=0 )
I am running OS 10.4.10 - on a G4 1.25 Powerbook - 1.5Gig Kingston RAM
My fear is that the CPU is on its way out -- the RAM is less than three months old and tests o.k. - have swapped around as mentioned -- is it possible a slot isnt connecting properly?
I recently had a mother/logicboard replaced (lowslot failiure) & installed Logic 8 a few weeks ago.
Although KPs are usually hardware related, should I try backing-up and re-installing the 10.4.10 update? or run the /sbin/fsck command?
I am HOPING this is a file conflict... oh please!

Thnx loads for the links ---- after i posted, i found your replies to others and the links.... doh - typical.
... yeah I wasnt sure if there were any code readers here that could help -- however! i 'think' i may have found a fix for my crashes/freezes/kernel panic (s)....maybe. they were occuring so frequently - i.e. about a minute after each re-start/re-boot - i've been getting hopeful as I havent had my P.B. go down after a day -- fingers crossed.....
I was worried it was hardware/RAM related as is usually the case with kernel things, but the RAM repeatedly checked fine, even after swapping around, using one then the other, etc...
I followed KJK555s' advice @ http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1037332&start=0&tstart=0 and after some more Diskwarrior-ing, headed to some of the library cache locations.... Here was his suggestion;

1. First run disk utility or some other good drive utility to make sure your HD is healthy
(permissions too).
2. Boot into safe made and clean your caches with a cache cleaner or manually drag
the following files to the trash:
com.apple.kernelcaches (a folder in /System/Library/Caches)
Extensions.kextcache (a file in /System/Library)
Extensions.mkext (a file in /System/Library/)
com.apple.ATS (a folder in /Library/Caches/)
com.apple.loginwindow.plist (a file in /Library/Preferences/)
Files that start with com.apple.LaunchServices (in /Library/Caches)
3. If the problem still persists, reinstall the latest 10.4.10 combo update (v 1.1)
in safe mode and repeat steps 1 and 2. )

--- should others be having similiar problems with kernel panics or freezes (on 10.4.10) - check out the continuing discussion going on @ the above link (some have had success reverting back to 10.4.9). Its probably best to go through all the RAM checking / Disk Utility procedures (follow Dales' links) before heading to the library caches. ...and although this has currently has stopped my repeated crashes, it may not be a kernel crash fix for everyone.

mac os x 10.0.9 are new installed and in use

if it can be resolve by upgrade to later version of mac os x system?

the memory devices i used on my computer are all compatible with mac 9.0 or later (it was marked in manual).
the kernel trap emerge frequently while starting up and web site openning as well as device connecting.
apropos,i can never open Disk Utility since mac os x v10.0.4 was installed,every time i do it,the notice must be emerge like this:
the application disk utility has unexpectedly quit,the system and orther applications have not been affected.
what's up? the hard disc used to be successfully checked without any problem
in mac 9.1 system.
i'm trying to upgrate into mac os x v10.4,and hope they will be resolve.

Hello again --
The PB made a trip to Apple and apparently the stock Apple memory was defective. But, there's still a problem. I got the 'book back this week and assumed that since Apple had it and repaired it, all would be well.
Well, maybe not.
After getting it back, the same issue of the system slowing down and usually hanging with a spinning beach ball of death seems to be present.
So, assuming there had to be some sort of software problem, I did an erase/install after rewriting the partition tables, etc. as per Apple's troubleshooting recommendation. So... new system on board after the RAM repair. Then, I reloaded my software (from CDs) and then restored my music/pics/etc. I still ended up having to use the power button to escape a massive slow down/hang. The following apps were open at the time:
Mail, Safari, iTunes, Console, Activity Monitor, Entourage (I think). The way it happens is like this:
All seems well -- then, I mouse (trackpad or external mouse; happens either way) to either click a tab in Safari, or check mail... anything like that... and that particular program gets a spinning beach ball. But, the other apps are still up and going (for now). So, I click on another one to make it active. In a few seconds or so, it too gets a beach ball. And, on, and on. The last time this happened, the Console did manage to catch the following:

So, I restarted, logged off and then set about doing the hardware test.
Last night I ran the hardware test in loop mode for 8 hours/15 cycles. Nothing untoward. Everything looks good. This morning, I reset the PRAM (like a bonehead, I forgot that earlier). In any case, I'm befuddled. With the exception of Entourage, everything else was Apple.
Any clues from the Console log?

I had been having a number of kernel panics that did not result in a panic log. I did an archive re-install and this seemed to sort the matter. However, I have just had another kernel panic and this time there is a log - can anyone tell me what it might mean? I have no peripherals and the machine is as it came from the factory. Unresolved Kernel trap - no Keyboard (long one)

Good morning !
I have a 17" iMac G4 800 running Tiger 10.4.7 (?) (pretty sure it's 7). The computer went through Katrina very well - virtually no trouble at all.
When I turn on the computer, I get an immense "Unresolved Kernel trap" error message referencing exceptions states, and attempts to backtrace.
I've tried running Disk Utility from the original install CD, verified and repaired Permissions and Disk from that CD, but it's not doing the trick. I know I need to try to repair off the Tiger install disk, but I can't get it to boot from the Tiger DVD. The iMac isn't recognizing my wireless keyboard so I can't press "c" or "option" to get it to mount the DVD. I plugged in my old keyboard and get no response (it DID get wet in the hurricane).
Do I need to use Techtool or that other repair software? Will they mount if I don't have a keyboard? Anyone have any thoughts about how else to address this?
Thank goodness for my Powerbook and Airport!

1. There are more steps in my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ that you've not reported trying. Based on what you report, you've performed steps 1 and 2. There are many remaining.
Let me reiterate what I stated earlier:"My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein."Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts in troubleshooting kernel panics unless the panic is one of those listed under "Specific causes of kernel panics" in the FAQ, which are predominantly know OS bugs that cause panics. If it's not one of those, one has to follow the entire procedure. Panics can be very difficult to troubleshoot.
2. You wrote: "I've run Disk utilities and verified the disk and permissions both off the original install disk (Jaguar) and off the Tiger Upgrade Install disk."You should not have used Disk Utility from a Jaguar disk on a Tiger volume. See "Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes."

Unresolved kernel trap - help!

I was watching a DVD on my powerbook when a bunch of text filled the screen. Apparently I was experiencing an "unresolved kernel trap". I tried rebooting many times and got the "You need to restart your computer..." message shortly after the grey screen with the apple appears. Rebooting using "command s" resulted in the a repeat of the kernel attack text on my black screen. The disk works fine in target mode and I ran Tech Tool on it and found no problems. I was able to boot the computer in safe mode, so I repaired permissions but when I rebooted normally I had the kernel panic again immediately. What should I do next? Is there something I can do in safe mode?
It may be worth noting that this particular book is a real lemon and has had the logic board replaced twice. Could it be hardware? RAM?

Following instructions from Jeff* in a different post I zapped the pram and reset the open firmware. It's booted. Been up and running for 2 minutes. So far so good. Thanks Jeff*!

What does this mean and what can I do to solve this? My computer got the transparent grey sliding screen of death and when I restarted, this is the error message it gave me. I recently installed 10.4.10 and it crashed when I was using Safari 2.0

Photoshop causing unresolved kernel trap

Has anyone else been experiencing full-system unresolved kernel trap crashes since the last Photoshop CS4 update? If I never open Photoshop, the system is fine - no crashing whatsoever. However if I even so much as open Photoshop, within a number of hours, the entire system crashes with the unresolved kernel trap error. It appears to have something to do with the video card as well.
One of my friends is experiencing this same issue on her PC with Photoshop. It clearly has something to do with with Adobe's last update since we both noted this new behavior right after their last update. Just curious how many others are experiencing the same thing and if anyone has any information about it.

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
It looks like what I understand to be a kernel conflict or something. Something to do with multiple applications causing an unresolved task. I have also read that it might be due to loose RAM. Are there any suggestions?
