Fresh Solaris 10 install zones

When I have a fresh installation of Solaris 10 SPARC, is any zone created? I need to install Oracle 10gR2 and documentation mentiones that I need to use the global zone? Is this global zone created by default?

Global zone is the whole system itself. So if you didn't mess with zones yet then you'll always be in the global zone.

  • Fresh Solaris 10 install.. and then?

I recently aquired a v20z to serve 10-15 customers (web, cms, mysql etc). Downloaded the 4 solaris 10 cds, installed very good.. but, next steps from a clean install to being able to get a decent xwindows session took me 6 hours without resolving the problem (as root... )
I have many years experience using most unix version and have good experience administrating linux servers. But here I got stuck, guess my box was ready to serve the web,.. but me not..
Any advice or websites where i can dig up the next steps? In my head I was planning to use xwindows and the graphical clients to administer services, domains and email users.. then shutting down the xserver and deplying the box to my ISP.
At the moment I am thinkning about installing Centos 64 and compile Bluequartz.. that is more or less what my servers run today (just 2 of them)..
I would REALLY like to run Solaris, any information very, very welcome!

    Hi Martin,
why are you pointing JAVA_HOME variable to /usr/bin.
JAVA_HOME must always point to the directory where JAVA installation resides. So for you it might be /j2sdk1.4.2_13 if the JAVA installation directory is j2sdk1.4.2_13.
If this does not solve ur problem.
Please let me know the exact step where u r facing with the problem.
    Hope it helps

  • Fresh solaris 10 x86 install patch update problems 119060-17 ...

Just yesterday, i installed a fresh Solaris 10 x86 onto some pc hardware. After getting solaris installed and issues with my network card, i downloaded and installed the free version of the update manager 1.0.x. Next, i proceeded to update all the general patches for the solaris 10 system. I started with the command 'pprosvc -i' from a terminal. It then proceeded to download and validate a bunch of patches successfully until it hit the following 3 patches:
    119060-17 ---- X11 6.6.2_x86: Xsun patch
    122213-10 ---- GNOME 2.6.0_x86: GNOME Desktop Patch
    122912-02 ---- SunOS 5.10_x86: Apache 1.3 Patch
All 3 failed some kind of validation and then crashed the pprosvc program, at which point it exited with the following error:
    122912-02 cannot be validated
    119060-17 cannot be validated
    122912-02 cannot be validated
Unexpected Failure: java.lang.Throwable: ERROR: Failed to validate the digital signature(s).
I also tried to use the GUI Update Manager to update, hoping the problem was isolated to pprosvc, but that problem was also in the GUI with a similar error message:
Error occurred...The detailed error message is: Unexpected Failure: java.lang.Throwable: ERROR: Failed to validate the digitial signature(s)
Anyone know why Sun's update patch process is so troublesome?
    Getting Tired of Solaris Updates...
I should mention that this is the free solaris 10 x86 install and i don't have a service contract with Sun. If this problem persists, i don't think i'll get one, as i see only further problems after buying one.
    tired and confused

    Hi,
    There is an issue with this that is currently being investigated. There is another thread that may shed some light on what is happening here;
    http://forum.sun.com/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=316
Thread title is : Sun UC, Digitally Signed Patches Using New Verisign Certificates
In the short-term please ensure that the patch mentioned in it is installed.
To quote part of mentioned thread above:
"Once the Sun Update Connection client software is upgraded with patch 121118-06 (SPARC) or 121119-06 (x86/x64) or later revisions normal behavior will resume. "
    If this fails to resolve your problem, would you be kind enough to post the output of the following command for analysis please;
    # showrev -p | egrep -e '121454|121119|120336|121082|121564|122232|119789'

  • How to install zone insolaris 10

.This mail is reagrding How To Setup Zone.
My Requirement is like this. i have to create 4 different zones.
    I have sun fire v240/2* 1 ghz / 4 gb Ram/2 * 36 gb HDD\lo0 and bge0 ethernet card with solaris 10.
    THIS IS A FRESH INSTALLTION.OF SOLARIS 10.
1)WHAT SIZE SHOULD I ASSIGNE FOR FOR EACH SLICE AND WHAT ALL SLICE I
SHOULD CREATE, WHILE INSTALLING SOLARIS 10.( ANY PRERQUEST)2)HOW ABT THE SWAP SIZE.( DOES IT PLAY MAJOR ROLE IN ZONES).
3)MY REEQUIREMENT IS TO CREATE FOUR ZONES.( WHAT ARE THE PRERQUEST FOR
    CREATING 4 ZONES)
4)WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CREATE USERS FOR EACH ZONE.SO THAT EACH USERS
CAN ACCESS THE RESPECTIVE ZONES.( IF POSSIBLE what is the COMMAND)
5)AFTER THE ZONE INSTALLATION I SHOULD INSTALL APPLICATION OR IT SHOULD
    BE BEFORE INSTALLTION OF ZONES.
6)ANY PREREQUEST PATCHES TO BE INSTALLED AFTER SOLARIS INSTALLATION FOR
    ZONE.
7)HOW MANY NETWORK INTERFACE CARD REQUIRED FOR ZONE INSTALLTION.
8)How TO TEST ZONES ARE WORKING FINE.
Hope you can help me out regarding this ZONES.
    With Warm Regard
    Alex George.

PS. Try not using all upper case. It makes it hard to read.
While you are reading Brendan's stuff here are some quick answers that may not be entirely accurate (usage voids warrantly).
    1) You can put the different zones on a slice or keep them all on one big one and use disk quotas to juggle the amount each gets (poor man's volume management).
    2) They all share swap but if they are swapping then you need more RAM. With a 36 GB disk I'd use 2 GB for swap in the global and it will handle all the rest.
    3) Depends if you do the "create -b" or not. If you do then about 4 GB per zone. If you inherrit all the basics like /usr then only about 400 MB for base OS.
    4) Create the users inside the zone like you would any other computer. They ssh to the IP of the zone not the global zone.
    5) Depends if you want to inherrit it to all the zones and have one copy in the global zone or if you want each zone to have its own copy. If the later do it after.
    6) You can get the cluster of recommended & security patches from sunsolve. It will patch all the zones regardless. Must run from the global zone I believe.
    7) None. The card in the global zone will just assign the IP for the zone to a virtual adapter on its NIC. If you want to assign a NIC to a zone you can dedicate it.
    8) ssh to the zone's IP and see if you can login.

  • Solaris 8 branded zone and privileges

    Hello,
I've just installed a Solaris 8 Branded zone to migrate an old server. The migration worked like a charm, and everything seems ok excepted one thing. The zone must run a Lotus Domino server, so the process needs to bind ports 80, 443 and 389, but it can't.
I've found things about the limitpriv directive for the zone configuration, and the net_privaddr privilege to allow a process to bind ports under 1024.
So now, if I run the process in the non global zone as root, it can bind, but if it is launched as the user notes, it can't.
If I use the ppriv command to see what are the privileges of the process, I see :
    1945:   /opt/lotus/notes/latest/sunspa/server
    flags = <none>
            E: file_link_any,proc_exec,proc_fork,proc_info,proc_session
            I: file_link_any,proc_exec,proc_fork,proc_info,proc_session
            P: file_link_any,proc_exec,proc_fork,proc_info,proc_session
            L: contract_event,contract_observer,file_chown,file_chown_self,file_dac_execute,file_dac_read,file_dac_search,
            file_dac_write,file_link_any,file_owner,file_setid,ipc_dac_read,ipc_dac_write,ipc_owner,net_bindmlp,net_icmpaccess,
            net_mac_aware,net_privaddr,net_rawaccess,proc_audit,proc_chroot,proc_exec,proc_fork,proc_info,proc_lock_memory,
proc_owner,proc_session,proc_setid,proc_taskid,sys_acct,sys_admin,sys_audit,sys_mount,sys_nfs,sys_resourceSo, the net_privaddr appears in the limit, but it is not enabled. How can I make it enabled for that process?
    Thanks

Thanks for the link, good explanations about privileges but they seem unusable in Solaris 8 branded zone. It suggests to create a role with the privileges my process needs, using the "rolemod -K" command, but this option does not exist for the rolemod command in my Solaris 8 zone, it just supports "classic" RBAC.
Maybe the solution would be to create the good profile for the user running the process, but I'm a little bit lost with RBAC and I can't find an existing profile corresponding to what I want.
Actually, the limitpriv for my zone is "default,net_rawaccess,net_privaddr,file_dac_read" and that's all. I added net_privaddr and file_dac_read because I saw that a "ppriv -D" on the Lotus server complained about the lack of these privileges, but in fact they are already included in default privileges.

  • Solaris 10-Branded Zone

    Hi,
I am trying to establish whether the following configuration is officially supported (and documented):
"Non-Global zone running a release of Solaris 10 which is older than the release of Solaris 10 running in the Global Zone".
I'm familiar with the idea of Branded Zones to support Solaris 8, 9 & some Linux kernels, and have seen some forum posts where people have created Solaris 10-branded zones, but haven't really seen anything that puts the official seal of approval on that configuration. Also I'm familiar with LDOMs and appreciate that I could get to where I want to be that way too.
    Any help welcome.
    Thanks,
    Paul.

This will be supported in Solaris 10 Upate 9 to a degree, using p2v. Below is a reply I had to a request I'd put in. You might also want to read this
    http://blogs.sun.com/jerrysblog/entry/zones_p2v
    Hi Sean,
I got information that p2v project is being backported for S10u9
This means, that you will be able to install a native zone from a flar.
I don't have detailed information at the moment, how this will work in terms of
patching in combination with Global Zone and other sibling NGZ's.
+According to Jerry Jelinek, Solaris10-branded zones will not being backported to Solaris 10,+
Got this info yesterday evening from Jerry.
I'll provide some more info about the p2v project for native zones in coming Solaris 10_U9,
    once I got more details.
So, I'd suggest to check, whether the mentioned p2v project with flar on native zones might fit your requirements.
    Thanks,
    Alfred

  • Creating a Solaris 8 branded zone

I am in the process of configuring a Solaris 8 branded zone using the SUNWsolaris8 package and the instructions in the Solaris8 Container Guide. Solaris 10 08/07 is installed in the global zone. I have the following kernel patches installed as required: 127111-08 and 128548-08. I get the following error after configuring the zone when I try to verify the zone:
    -bash-3.00# zonecfg -z gfxc-qazone
    gfxc-qazone: No such zone configured
Use 'create' to begin configuring a new zone.
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone> create -t SUNWsolaris8
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone> set autoboot=true
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone> set zonepath=/export/zones/gfxc-qazone
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone> add attr
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone:attr> set name=machine
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone:attr> set type=string
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone:attr> set value=sun4u
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone:attr> end
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone> verify
    gfxc-qazone: unknown brand.
    gfxc-qazone: Invalid document
I cannot find any other information anywhere on this error. I am hoping those that have successfully installed a Solaris 8 branded zone can help me out. Thanks.

I have installed the SUNWs8brand packages before I started the configuration and I also installed the patch. I am not sure what you mean if the package installed in the correct order. I cannot find what I am missing. The original installation for the global zone was using the SUNCreq with other packages added during the installation. I realized after the O/S installation that I needed the zone packages as well as the live upgrade packages. After installing those packages I installed the SUNWs8brand packages. Let me know if there is something else that I am missing. I am thinking of re-installing the O/S with the End User software group.

  • Solaris 10 local zone setup requirement/steps for am/ps 7.0 installation

    Hi,
Is there any document available on solaris 10 local zone creation/requirement for am server/ portal server 7.0 install? Any help/pointer is appreciated.
    Thanks,

I don't believe there is any specific documentation am/portal in a zone. And as far as I know there are no specific requirements either. I have successfully installed portal in a solaris zone.
A good starter tutorial on zones is here: http://partneradvantage.sun.com/protected/solaris10/adoptionkit/tech/zones/tutorial.html

  • Possible to upgrade Solaris 9 branded zone to 10?

We have an application running in a Solaris 9 branded zone. The application version is not compatible with Solaris 10, however, the next version of the application is compatible with Solaris 10.
So the plan is to upgrade the application in the branded zone, then upgrade the branded zone to Solaris 10.
All the reading I have found so far indicates that it is not possible to upgrade a Solaris 9 branded zone to !0.
Can it be done, and if so, pointers to a documented process would be helpful.

create a new Solaris 10 zone
install the new version into the zone
    migrate the data
    test
destroy the now unnecessary Solaris 9 branded zone.
For something like this play in a dev environment first.

  • Cloning Solaris 10 with zones

What is the best method to use when cloning a Solaris machine with zones, to ensure all software is included and can be easily installed
    on new hardware?
    Thank you!

If you use UFS, then ufsdump/ufsrestore
If you use ZFS, then zfs send/zfs receive
But, if you are using hardware or software RAID, you can also try to move one disk to an another machine.
You can see with these simple examples, that you have several methods and it depends how you configured your machine, Solaris and the zones. And finally, it depends too what is the source machine and what is the target machine, and how they are configured.

  • Best Backup Practice for Solaris 10 running Zones

What is the best practice for backing up a solaris 10 server with zones?
I have solaris 10 installed here on a v240 running 4 zones. All services run off the local zones. We use Veritas backup exec 9, and I have the solaris agent. Should I backup the Data on each of the zones as if they were their own system , or should I only run the backup exec agent on the global zone?
It would make sence to just backup from the global zone, as it is only one system to backup.
We are working on our backup procedures now, and I want to make sure that we are doing this the best way possible.
    any thoughts?

    Hey there,
Have a look at this excellent guide. I think that you may find what you need here. If not drop an email back. To begin with you need an extra disk(s) since you will mirror your data. This is sort of a pre-requisite.
    Good luck,

I notice you mention you patched the system and then attempted to create the zones. Did you happen to patch with the -G option?
If you did that means that the patches will NOT be applied to any existing or to be created zones. Check out the man patchadd. This may be your problem. You'll need to patchrm the patches you applied with -G and reapply them without.
I ran into this with patch 119213. I patched the Global zone with: patchadd -G. We then attempted to build zones and I got the error:
From Console Log of a zone:
    console login: root
    Sep 28 11:38:04 am03 login: open_module:
    /usr/lib/security/pam_authtok_get.so.1 failed: ld.so.1: login: fatal:
libnspr4.so: open failed: No such file or directory
I patchrm that patch and reapplied without -G to the global zone and all was well.

  • 11gR2 scan and scan listeners are not starting in Solaris non globa zones

    Hi,
my configuration is a 2 node RAC. each node is a solaris container/ zones on two phyiscally different machines.
    (SunOS 5.10 Generic_147440-07 sun4u sparc SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise).
after installation of GI, root.sh was successful but failed when trying to start the following resources

    ora.scan2.vip
    ora.scan3.vip
the scans are not in the host file but on DNS, the GI home has been patched with January 2012 GI PSU.
Has any one successfully installed 11gR2 RAC on Solaris non global zones? if you have tell me how you got past the scan issue.

  • How to create a separate /var partition on solaris non-global zone

    Hi
I found no simple way to create a separate /var partition in solaris non-global zone.
I am using solaris 10 u9 and my root pool is zfs. My zone's zonepath is also separate zfs fs.
But, I do not know how to make the /var as a mountpoint of another zfs dataset since /var is not empty.
I also do not know if there is a way to install a zone with /var as a separate (outside '/') partition.
    That will be really useful.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks

I meant a separate zfs fs with mountpoint '/var' in a non-global zone.
I am insisting, because I do not want /var to fill up the '/' on non-global zone.
With default non-global zone installation, you cannot avoid that.
My zonepath itself is a zfs fs. I also have a zfs dataset provisioned to the non-global zone.
I cannot create a zfs fs out of that dataset and mount it as '/var' becasue by then non-global zone
    already installed content on '/var'
I want the '/var' as a separate dir or mountpoint, the same reason global zone gives you that option during install.
    Thanks

  • [Serious BUG] Youtube crashes to death; fresh Windows 7 install; firefox and plugins updated; plugin-container.exe disabled; noway

This happens to me and to two friends of mine. So it's hardly a coincidence.
I have done a fresh Windows 7 install (for other reasons) so I thought this problem (which I had since about version 8.0) would disappear. I was wrong.
    Firefox and plugins are updated:
    Firefox 13.0
    Shockwave Flash 11.3 r300
GPU video drivers are also updated.
I came across the "plugin-container.exe solution" but it didn't solve the problem.
    How to reproduce the bug.
Visit Youtube and click on some video. Minimize Firefox. Wait some seconds. Next time you restore the window Firefox crashes, you have to kill plugin-container.exe from the task manager OR you have to restart the entire browser in case you've disabled the plugin container.
The same bug should occur when having various tabs open and one of them is Youtube with a video playing. But also when Firefox has no focus and you have other windows on top of it (and a Flash video running or even paused).
    Since this does happen:
    -with a fresh install;
    -with everything updated;
    -even disabling the plugin controller;
it seems very very strange to me that this problem is STILL present since version 8.0 (or even before) and that there is so few reports of this bug around the internet.
I'm not complaining here, I'm just showing my perplexity about almost noone having this bug which is ruining my (and my friends') Firefox experience since the past years.
    My purpose here is:
    * to let you know about this problem;
    * to know if other are experiencing it;
    * hopefully to keep giving support to this thread and answer to your questions about this bug so to help this thing being fixed;

For problems that occurred with Flash 11.2 and earlier, you might want to consider disabling graphics hardware acceleration in both Flash and Firefox.
    '''Flash'''
Right-click any video in Flash Player and choose Settings.
Clear the checkbox for "Enable hardware acceleration"
    '''Firefox'''
Save all work (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    Restart Firefox.
