Fresh Windows 10 install on a windows 7 system

First, my system specifications:
CPU: i7-920
Memory: 6GB Ram
Storage: 320GB drive, 750GB Drive, 2TB drive, 120GB SSD drive, 250GB SSD Drive
Video: Nvidia 670 GTX
I've been running windows 7 since 2008 or 2009 when i built this PC.  I've installed windows 7 at that point, and up to now, couldn't be bothered to reinstall windows at all.  At this point, C:\ is running out of space with loads of programs I've
installed and stopped using.
Long story short,  when windows 10 officially comes out, i want to upgrade to windows 10, without upgrading windows 7.  I do not want to bring all that mess over into windows 10.  I would rather just install windows 10 on a new drive, and
format the 320GB drive. Last week, my wife surprised me with a 250GB SSD drive for my birthday, which i installed windows 10 preview onto.
I did find an issue that is still driving me up the wall.  Normally, by default in windows 7, Drive C is an aging 320GB seagate drive, D is a 750GB seagate, E is a 2TB WD, F is a 128GB SSD drive, and G is where my new SSD drive is located.  The
issue i came up with, is a permission error to access my data on all of those drives.  After installing windows 10 onto G:, i copied some files over (kee-pass2 data file, steam installer, nvidia graphics driver, a text file with my mIRC registration code)
so that i could get a new system up and running.
The problem I got was when i booted into windows 10, and tried to start or open any of these files, i was denied permission to open any of these files, including the text file with the mIRC registration code.  I've right clicked on these files, went
into security and added myself as the owner of these files, and am still being denied access to these files.  If I downloaded the drivers and the steam installer, they started fine.  The kee-pass2 software couldn't load the database at all, even
when i went to the windows 7 location and loaded the original file.
Steam could not access any of my steam installs on E:\, claiming a permission error.  When i tried to go into my steam directory on e:\ windows reported that i still do not have permission to access the file, and seemed to give me the option to take
ownership.
To date, it's still claiming I don't have permission to access any of these files.  I've even tried making a local login with the exact same account name as on windows 7, with administrator's access, and am still being denied permission to access these
files.
At this point, I'm feeling an impending sense of doom, and am currently believing that my idea of installing windows 10 without upgrading from windows 7 directly is not going to work.   The only way I can currently think of to resolve this issue is
to reformat all of my drives once I get windows 10 installed, and reinstall whatever games i want back from steam once I'm set up in windows 10.
Is there something I'm missing here?  Is there any thing I can do without taking such a drastic action?  Can I even upgrade to windows 10 for free in the way I want to upgrade?

I hate to say it but you seem to be making this harder on yourself. Reduce the problem to it's simplest form, you want to move data from one volume to another volume and it's giving a permissions error.
The first thing to eliminate is any form of disk protection such as Bitlocker or some sort of TPM implementation. Assuming you definitely don't use anything like that...
The next thing to do is dismount (or physically disconnect in this case) all volumes except the relevant pair, boot from the Win 10 volume and then try to access the information on the "data" volume. If this does not work then reporting back the
exact error would be beneficial. A screenshot of the Disk Management interface would also be very useful. Right-click the start menu for a shortcut to the snap-in.
Finally almost all applications (including Steam games) are best reinstalled fully upon completion of the OS install. The installation process for almost every game includes third party libraries, registry entries and so on that will be missing from the
new OS. Indeed Steam itself can give problems when "importing" a library through physical copy and repair. It's possible, but not advisable.
Moving data isn't the issue.  Reading existing data in it's current location is the issue.  This is occurring even after I renamed the system to be the same as the windows 7 system, and using the same user name and password.
I suppose it's some feature of the NTFS system to keep people from maliciously accessing a "secured" filesystem that they don't really have access to.  The problem with this case is, it's my data and i'm sort of being prevented from doing
so.
To date, I have been able to get Windows 10 to read some directories after clicking a button to give me that access, and go eat dinner or watch a tv episode.  The issue is that it won't let me into my windows 7 user directory, even after spending an
hour going through my directory.  The only thing I can do is open an admin command prompt and manually xcopy what i want to access.  The other issue is that it appears to randomly forget that it managed to 'convert' some of the directories, and needs
to do it again.. and again.. and again.

  • Can't run windows install/upgrade within windows installed on boot camp

I have an issue which seems to be something related to the new version of boot camp. I have installed Win7 on my mac, but my disc is special which requires it to be used as an upgrade. I am able to install it on a formatted partition but can't activate it until I run windows 7 setup again within windows and "Upgrade" itself. I cannot run windows setup within boot camp win7. I get the message: "Windows was unable to create a required installation folder. Error code: 0x80070005"
The reason I say "new" version of boot camp is because I found old solutions to this problem where you just have to uninstall the boot camp stuff from Windows, but you can no longer do that it seems.
Does anyone have a clue as to how I can get around this and do the upgrade?

Even though it worked fine with the old motherboard setup?  Before I tried installing windows 98 and ME, it would automatically run scandisk and it didn't report any errors.

  • Factory reset, Windows install stucks at dowork.cmd

Hy!Recently I had to factory reset my TPT2 32Gb. The boot list was perfect, after i plugged the usb stick and started the device, the recovery software was launched and soon after the windows install. The windows install stucked at a point
. There is a window, Windows Setup at the top of it, it says:Windows is now setting up the following items:(checkmark) C:\SWWORK\BCD08.CMD(checkmark) C:\DRIVERS\DPINST.CMD
C:\SWWORK\DOWORK.CMD (with bold font, i assume, here stucked the whole thing)
C.\SWWORK\FINISH.CMD And also a cmd.exe command window with the last two line: c:\windows\system32>c:\SWWORK\STATE.EXE /disk=c /w 1C:\WINDOWS\system32> if exist c:\swwork\fixletr.cmd call c:\swwork\fixletr.cmd During this process, the restoreing USB stick is plugged in. Please help, i dont have a slightest idea what to do!

    Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have a fix to this? I'm also stuck ay DOWORK.CMD. I've tried to restore my computer several times but I always get stuck at this point. Below is a screen capture of my problem and in the CMD box, the last 2 messages translate to "File not found":

  • RSAT won't install on Windows 8.1 Pro - "The system cannot find the file specified."

Please help. RSAT won't install on Windows 8.1 Pro. Every time I try, I get the same error - "The system cannot find the file specified.". I really don't want to have to refresh the PC to get it working! I've installed the update successfully on
a fresh win 8.1 enterprise install on a Hyper-V VM.
I am in uk, so have installed the en-US language pack first. I did have a windows component store corruption but I've managed to fix that.
    event log says:
Windows update "Update for Windows (KB2693643)" could not be installed because of error 2147942402 "The system cannot find the file specified." (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe"

    CBS log (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log): http://1drv.ms/19CAv14

As Roger Lu reported, the log indicates that there is corruption in the update files that you downloaded. The log actually reports “file not found”, so you may also want to check permissions on the extracted files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\76ecaa86ec6712300c2d71cbcdad378c\.
You can also re-try downloading the files to see if your original download was just corrupt.

It was a permissions issue! Thanks so much Bruce!
I checked the permissions for the folder mentioned above and TrustedInstaller only had List Folder Contents and Special Permissions. So I granted granted Read & Execute to TrustedInstaller and tried installing again...
    1) double clicked the installer.
    2) once it said Initialisation was complete, I checked the permissions again and it had re-set them to as before, so I granted Read & Execute to TrustedInstaller again
    3) Installation was successful.
Not really sure why this happened as it doesn't make sense but it's working now :-)

  • Updating ipod on fresh Windows install without losing data?

    Hey guys.
I have an 80gb iPod Classic, and my iTunes had about 72gb worth of data in the playlist. Recently I had to reformat my system drive and do a fresh Windows install, and as such my iTunes playlist obviously got wiped. If I readd everything that was on my iPod into the playlist, will iTunes try to wipe my iPod and transfer everything over again, or will it recognize that the files are exactly the same and only copy the new files over that weren't originally on it?

If your iPod is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Once the iPod is in manual mode you can add to it without losing any content but you will have to drag it from the library yourself: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
However once you are safely connected you can copy content from the iPod to iTunes. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • How do you install Windows 8.1 on a system with multiple hard drives?

Specifically a system with a User folder located on more than one drive. I have programs installed on both drives in order to save space on one (a small SSD boot drive). Upon trying to install windows 8.1, the Windows Store tells me my PC can't run Windows
8.1 and gives me the error 0xc1900102. Suggestions?

Got it working :D... But it eats some time tho...
First run a cmd with admin privileges.
    Then mklink /j C:\Users D:\Users
(Change D if you have users on other drive)
Now follow this guilde untill the profiles directory
    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4275-user-profiles-relocate-another-partition-disk.html
    Change it to %SystemDrive%\Users
Finish the guide and let it do its thing. (This will leave your Users map on the HDD)
    Now activate the Administrator account
    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/9650-built-administrator-account-enable-disable-windows-8-a.html
Remove the mklink of C:\Users. Then copy the (hidden) Default User profile from D:\Users to C:\Users (yes create Users on the C partition)
Then log off and log in as the admin account.
Create a new online account (get an alternate email or make an account alias at https://account.live.com/summarypage.aspx)
    Log in with that account.
Download and install the windows 8.1 Upgrade and let it finish everything (Took 3 hours at me)
Then login with your main account. It will generate a new account.
Restart your PC and login with the admin account.
Goto C:\Users and look what name it got. If the name is crappy then you can rename it at:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\<your profile ID>
    Then do a mklink /j C:\Users\<ProfileName> D:\Users\<ProfileName>
Now restart the pc and login on your main account.
If everything went well you will have your old account back.
Now you can remove the C:\Users map and do a mklink /j C:\Users D:\Users
P.S. My store doesn't work anymore after this...

I want to install a third operating system on my macbook pro. I already have windows and i want install unix or linux in there. Is it possible??

Yes, it's possible, but if your Windows system is on a Boot Camp partition then you have to first remove it. Then create however many partitions you want for the operating systems. You have OS X on one, so you need two more - one for Windows and one for Linux. You then install Windows and Linux separately to their respective partitions. Download rEFIt
Use it as the replacement bootloader so you can properly boot from each OS properly.

  • Can't install itunes on windows 64 bit system

I tried to install itunes on my 64 bit machine, but with verson 6.0.5, it says this software doesnt support 64 bit systems. I tried to install an earlier version i think its 6.0.4.2 not sure, but it does install on my computer. When I try to open the program and quicktime, I get error box saying the program had a problem and couldn't open. Is there anyway to fix this problem, and is there a way to have the newest version of itunes to work on windows 64 bit?
      Windows XP Pro

iTunes and QuickTime have never been supported on the 64-bit version of Windows (look here for the official statement). Some people have managed to get it working (at least tolerably), but from what I've read, a recent update from Microsoft has caused a lot of problems. You might try rolling back recent Windows updates and see if you can get things working again.

  • Boot Camp - Setup was unable to create a new system partition....from Windows install

Hi folks.  So I ran the boot camp wizard and made a USB install key for windows from that.  I boot to it and everything works until I get to the install.  I format the Boot Camp partition as indicated in the walkthrough and then I get "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.  See the Setup log files for more information." from the Windows installer.  What do I do?   Thanks.

just to add to the mix. . . i just got a new macbook retina.
Originally used a USB flash drive. Hit the same barrier described here.
Spent a few hours with drive unplugging / replugging silliness. No progress. Went back into OSX to attempt using an external DVD drive. There is no option for that in Bootcamp assistant now - must use USB.
Grabbed a different USB stick and started again. This time I used the other USB port on the macbook (the one on the left). Everything worked fine this time!?
You still have to go into "advanced options" and hit "format" when you get to the partition screen.
Moral of the story: different stick, different port. Sounds random. If that doesn't work, try changing your socks and putting on a hat.
    Good luck!

  • Installing Windows XP on my MSI system

    system specs:
         * I am currently in the process of building the system
*It contains your 875P Neo-FIS2R mainboard for Pentium 4.
         *Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz , 800 fsb.
         *2 hard drives:
               - WD Raptor 36.7 GB
               - WD Caviar 160 GB
         * 512 MB Geil RAM
*This is my first time building a system so I am still figuring things out.
    Problem:
I was recently installing Windows XP Professional Edition and I accidentally installed it onto the WD Caviar hard drive when I wanted to place it onto the WD Raptor.  I bought the Raptor for its speed and hoped to place the OS and applications on it.  I want to place multimedia files on the WD Caviar.  I am now trying to figure out how I can go about getting the operating system off of the WD Caviar and onto the Raptor (not necessarily in that order).  Is there a way that I can transfer XP from the Caviar to the Raptor?  If not, can I uninstall XP on the Caviar hard drive and simply reinstall it onto the Raptor?  I know that this doesn't apply directly to my mobo but I did purchase the FIS2R and I am desperate.  Thanks for any help you guys can provide.  I appreciate it.  Take care.
    James V.

Please forgive me for not knowing exactly, but here's what I did. Same type of issue you have. I had ide drive, installed windows on it cus I didn't have the Raptor WD hooked up. I have the 74gb 10,000 rpm sata one, which is even faster then the 36gb due to its lower ms access time. Anyway I was running on the ide ata133 maxtor 120gb as you see in my sig. Well then I instaleld the sata and enabled it in the bios etc. I then told windows xp pro to install on the sata drive. so then i boot to the sata and in the boot screen it shows both hard drives and allows me to select windows xp pro and windows xp pro, the first option is the sata drive. cus it's the last install. that's all you need to do is just enable the sata, boot from windows xp, select the sata drive. then when it boots, you'll see 2 windows xp pro choices. the sata drive will be the first choice cus that's the last installation. just boot to that, then if the ide has anything on it you want, save to sata drive, then from within windows right click on the ide drive, and reformat it. but then you need to get rid of the windows xp pro choice from the boot menu by right click my computer, then choose properties, then you want to select advanced, then under the start up and recovery at the bottem, click on settings, then clic on edit, it opens notepad with the settings. delete the line that will say multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect . BUT, you will be deleting the second line, not the first. Or you can in the edit screen just say 0 seconds in the pull down menu. Also go in the bios and disable the ide from boot.
this should help ok i hope.

    Hi,
Nearly all hardware vendors won't release drivers for Windows 10 until Windows 10 is officially released (not preview). Windows 10 should install drivers for your machine after few updates. Windows 10 can find all drivers (except one: finger print) for my 5 years old machine. It should be able to find drivers for newer machines).

  • Is X-windows and GUI desktops supported on the ODA "engineered system" running a RAC database?  If it is, what is the yum command needed to install the X-windows, Gnome, and KDE package groups?

Is X-windows and GUI desktops supported on the ODA "engineered system" running a RAC database?  If it is, what is the yum command needed to install the X-windows, Gnome, and KDE package groups?

While I agree with the direction of the suggestions with installing packages for X-windows, we do not have a blanket 'apply any package' recommendation.
In particular we do not support altering the kernel (although we do have exceptions which we review on a case by case basis).
Basically, if the you want to alter functionality that would not impact core functionality you are usually fine.
A good guideling is : The more dependencies that there are between the package / rpm you are considering using the higher the potential impact on functionality - meaning higher chance for problems
Note: We do use VNC including Real and Tiger regularly , but we have no hard recommendation on how you may want to use X-windows. I have never seen a limitation other than comments on bugs
or incompatibility within the X-window product itself with certain kernel levels.
Patching may overwrite some packages that you may install, however,  _depending on packages/rpms added_ there is also the possibility that you will break existing functionality to the point
that patching itself will fail ( we have already seen a few cases of this in which case the proper mitigation is to remove / roll-back any alterations to the ODA before patching, and then adding the packages/rpms
back after the patching is completed.
From what you are discussing the impact should be low without conflicts, but please consider the above, and if you have specific packages which you consider potential problems
please create an SR so that we can review packages / rpms on an individual basis.
Once again: the main criteria for not supporting rpms is regarding the kernel itself

  • Installing drivers for Windows XP leads to "fatal system error"

    Hello,
I am trying to install the drivers for Windows XP on my new MacBook, using boot camp from my Mac OS X install cd (version 10.6.3). The option comes up for me to either "repair" or "remove" drivers. I clicked on repair, and after about 5 min of smooth installing, the screen went blue and said that there had been a "fatal system error".
I also tried removing the boot camp, and then repairing and the same thing happened. I was glad to find that everything on the Mac side of my computer is still working fine.
Is there anything else I can try to install the drivers successfully?
    Thank you!!
P.S. I just noticed that my MacBook is running OSX 10.6.4, but the install cd that came with my Mac says it's OSX 10.6.3. Do you think that could have something to do with the problem?

System Builder - just be sure to get 64-bit version, no one needs or wants 32-bit today, and only comes with one, while retail ships with both 32/64-bit media.
you can't install it and activate on different hardware later is all, and by then for what you saved, so what, Windows 8 or SP2 will be out.
A few people had trouble with Windows 7 SP1 for some reason and not sure exactly why, changes to the boot loader on the DVD I presume.
