Fresh Windows 7 Installation on new drive -- LR3 questions

I bought a new SSD drive that I intend to use as my Windows 7 boot drive.  I will do a fresh installation of Win 7 and reinstall all my applications.   Lightroom 3 is currently installed on my older conventional drive in the C partition.  That old drive will become a data drive.
1. As far as I can tell, all I need to do for LR3 is export my existing catalog to a temporary holding location (like a USB drive), install LR3 to the new drive, then import the catalog into the new installation.  Is that all it takes to get me back to where I am now?  I assume I will also need to re-register LR?
2.  My SSD is smaller than my current C: partition so I want to limit it to Windows and required program files.  I'll want to keep all data on a different drive.  Some Windows programs, by default, store certain user data on the C drive.  As far as I can tell, LR3 doesn't store user data on the C drive by default.  It just stores the required files for running the program on C, and stores user data in locations specified by the user.  Is that right?
3.  Are there any other considerations, specific to LR3, when reinstalling the OS and the program?
Thanks.

Assuming your original image files are on a seperate drive to the boot drive then Copy or Move your catalog file (and the preview folder if you wish) to another drive, no need to export it. Just copy it back to whatever location you want once finished and open it from the new instillation. On no account re import files that are already referenced by a catalog. When you re start LR it should find the original files if the drive paths to wherever they are located remains the same, if not right click and relocate the files/folders.
LR stores the catalog file and previews data on whatever drive you specify when creating the catalog. It will default to the C drive unless you say different. The locations of preferences files, templates etc. are by default on a windows installation at user/username/AppData/Roaming/Adobe on the C drive. Obviously the image files themselves can go wherever you wish.
It is usually best to locate the catalog on a different drive to the OS and applications where this is possible. However if your SSD drive is large enough the performance gains from having the previews on the SSD may outweigh the performance gains from having them on a separate drive, it rather depends on how much space you have on the SSD.

  • Windows 7 Installation problem: "no drives were found, click to load driver..."

I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite laptop (U945-S4140) that came with windows 8. I am trying to install windows 7 enterprise 64 bit.
I have the installation file on a bootable USB stick. In order to boot from the USB, I have to go into the BIOS settings and change from UEFI to CSM boot mode. Then the computer will boot from the usb stick and the windows 7 installation begins to work fine.
However, I soon get an error message that "no drives were found. click to load driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation."
I cannot figure out how to proceed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

I have tried many solutions....Maybe I should provide more details on my options.
Through my university I am granted the rights & license to use a copy on windows enterprise. From them I obtained a valid product key and also downloaded an ISO install file. It seems as if this file was designed to be burned to a dvd. I used windows 7 usb/dvd tool to burn the ISO file to a DVD. No problem there. However, my new laptop does not have an optical drive. So, I borrowed an external one that plugs in via USB. Again, in order to get ANYTHING to happen, I need to boot the USB(dvd rive) in CSM mode. Even then, it doesn't work. (I'm sorry but I forget the specific error I got here.....there have been so many methods and so many errors today)
Now, with this DVD, I have had a little bit of progress if I click the setup.exe file while Windows 8 is running. It begins the Windows 7 setup program, and even sees the harddrive! It asks me what partition I want to install to, and I selected the only 1 (of 4) that it said was 'available' to write to. Then, it loaded the installation files, but when it went to automatically restart, it froze during the 'starting windows' screen just as the little colored circles appear, that eventually form the windows logo. Again, I think the problem here might have been that during the restart, it looked to the USB-DVD drive, which needs CSM mode to boot properly, but Windows 8 can only start in UEFI mode.
Any attempt to put this ISO file onto a USB stick have not worked well. I used Rufus and the only thing that slightly worked was burning the ISO to the USB stick with a 'GPT partition scheme for UEFI controller' with the 'FAT32' file system. When using this to boot, I did not have to change the BIOS to CSM mode. The screen for 'loading files' came up like the installer was going to work. However, the computer then froze during the 'Starting Windows' screen, however, this time the little circles actually were able to form the windows logo. But, at that point I was left with a pulsing windows logo and it was stuck. It did not even make it to the actual installer.
The situation I posted about originally is slightly different. Some tech guys at my department's electronic shop have a bootable USB stick with the windows 7 enterprise installation software already on it. I used that and was at least able to get a little bit into the windows 7 setup before it told me it cannot find a disk to install to (as in my original post).

  • Windows XP installation on new machines

Hey, anybody knows if the latest Toshiba machines support Windows XP installation,
or it is commonly accepted to support only Windows 7 and later OS?
I tried to install Windows XP Pro SP3, 2008 release on Satellite C660 machine released in 2011,
and it crashed at the beginning of installation. Can it be that Bios prevents the installation,
forcing to work with Win 7?
Or some drivers are missing in XP installation pack, making XP incompatible with HW?

On this forum you will find many threads where you can find answer to your question and also good explanation how to install WXP on new notebook models.
    > I tried to install Windows XP Pro SP3, 2008 release on Satellite C660 machine released in 2011,

I presume it happen because of missing SATA driver. It must be loaded with F6 before WXP installation starts. You can also create WXP installation disc with integrated SATA driver. How to do this you can read on
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB7B020R0000R01.htm

If you have more questions you are welcome.
By the way: have you created recovery DVD before you have started WXP installation?

  • Windows 7 installs its generic driver for the soundcard - cannot prevent it from doing so.

    Ave Maria!
Just bought a SB0886 and I cannot get Windows 7 not to install the generic HD audio drivers. I've tried chaning the system properties under the hardware device installation settings ,i.e., No let me choose what to do - didn't make any difference. As soon as I scan for hardware changes it automatically installs the windows drivers and there seems to be no way to prevent this from happening.
I need this sound card installed really urgently - please help.

No, that should not be cause of generic drivers. Which drivers are you trying to install? From CD or latest drivers from HP? If that doesn't work i guess you need to manual install the driver first. Therefore extract the package, go to device manager, open audio device, select to install new driver, 2nd choice to manally install them, then it depends you can try to let it search for the driver in the extracted folder or you really need to manually force it.

Hello Maxxpower33, thank you for your words.
I looked through the error logs that could be generated from the tool and found this one which may be what you experienced.  Kindly let me know if this is what you got:
"Files copied successfully. However, we were unable to run bootsect to make the USB device bootable. If you need assistance with bootsect, please click the "Online Help" link above for more information."
Some further information is that I found this post where another user experienced the same error on a laptop, although the speculation mentioned in the post is that the user does not have a Windows store account under which he purchased the license for Windows
7 Home Premium, which is the flavor he was trying to get on the bootable drive.  However, this does not seem to be a valid response due to the fact that the tool does not check Windows XAuthCert Servers for validation on licensing.  So ignore that
portion of the post, but the 2nd post helps a bit by linking to another article, providing both below.
    Forum Port With Same Error
Article with 4 methods to create
a bootable Windows 7 USB Drive
In that first post, further down, is another reply to a tool that I have not tested with.  So please use caution on this one as I cannot find very much feedback other than on their own website, but sounds much like the first tool I mentioned in my first
post "Unetbootin", but this one is called Rufus, and two people did mention they had good success with this tool after having difficulties with the Windows utility.
    Rufus
After all that is said and done, there is not 1 tool that will work for everyone all of the time on every environment.  Why?  I would like to know also...but speculate hardware/firmware/bios combinations could be the culprit.  One of these
tools should work for you and it would be my recommendation to try them in this order (skipping what you've already tried):
    1) Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool
    2) Unetbootin
    3) Manually creating the partition and xcopy'ing the extracted ISO to it
    4) Rufus
    5) Borrow a PC with a DVD-R in it and burn the ISO to a disc and install from it.  If your laptop does not have a DVD drive, an external drive can be purchased for roughly $25 or less.  Or if you have an internal drive laying around, buy an enclosure
for about $15 and put the drive inside there and attach it to your laptop via USB or eSATA.
As always, my advice is nothing more than my opinion, which are like bungholes...everyone has one and they all stink!  LOL!

  • Windows 8 Installation on partitioned drive

    Hi!
This is my first question and sorry for my broken English.
I'm currently trying to install Windows 8 in my Macbook Pro 15" machine. But I got this as an error message.
"Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
I heard Bootcamp Assistant cannot handle multiple partitions scheme. Anyway to install Windows with 2 data partitions like this?
As a beginner, step-by-step guide wiil be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Not sure about Windows 8 as I've never tried to install on a Mac but with Windows 7 you can't have more then one OS X partition as you won't be able to partition the drive in Boot Camp with more then one OS X partition.
Windows 7 and prior version of Windows can only be installed on a disk that has less then 4 Primary partitions amd the partition Windows in installed on must be a MBR partition. By default OS X create 3 partitions, one for OS X itself one for the EFI partition (200MBs) and one for the Recovery HD partition (650MBs) and they all look like Primary partitions to the Windows installer. Now Windows 8 has changed that so it will install to systems that are EFI based and in those system the drive must be a GPT type. But Boot Camp creates a sudo MBR partition for Windows to be installed on. But Yet with more then 4 primary partitions the Windows 8 installer see that and pops up an error because it is looking for a GPT partition to install on.
You can try booting back into OS X and them move all your data back to the Main OS X partition then remove those other 2 partitions you have created and then ReRun Boot Camp Assistant to partition the one and only OS X partition and start the Windows install.
It's kind of a FUBAR on both Apple's part and the Windows 8 installer that honestly Apple never thought out properly. If a Mac has more then one OS X partition then boot camp should not create a MBR partition for Windows to install to and or boot camp should not even allow you to partition the drive and start the installer for Win 8.

  • USB drive not recognized in fresh Windows 7 installation on MBPR 15 via bootcamp.

I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate on my Macbook Pro Retain 15 via bootcamp. I've gotten all the way through the Win 7 installation and now am able to login. However, Windows doesn't detect my USB drive that has all the drivers. (It's already FAT32).
I'm stuck with a Windwos installation that can't get online and can't do anything. How do I install the basic drivers? My hunch is that the Macbook has all USB 3.0 slots and Windows doesn't have those drivers by default.

• Fresh Snow Leopard Installation on new hard drive & Leopard iLife

I have an early 2009 MBP that came with Leopard 10.5 and upgraded to Snow Leopard. I bought a new hard drive and will need to reinstall OSX. I've read it's possible to perform a fresh install of Snow Leopard without first installing Leopard from the backup disks.
    1) Is this true?
    2) I've heard a fresh Snow Leopard install will not install iLife. Can I reinstall iLife from my Leopard backup disks (that came with the MBP)?
    3) Anything else I should know before installing everything in the new hard drive?
    Many thanks!

    1 True
2 True. You should be able to re-install it from the DVD that came with your computer.
3 You should be fine If you have a drive enclosure, you might be able to plug it in and use that to transfer all your stuff from the old drive to the new one.

  • Windows 7 installation from USB drive issue

I tried installing Windows 7 through a USB Thumb drive. I got an error message saying
"No device drivers were found. Make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK."
    Please help me.

    Hi:
See if either of the driver files I have attached work.
If they don't, I won't be able to assist you any further.
You will have to try each of them separately, because they have the same file names in the folders.
Download, unzip and copy just the files in the folders to a usb flash drive.
With the flash drive and W7 installation media plugged into the machine, boot from the W7 installation media.
After you select the install now option, select the Drive Options - Advanced menu, then select the Load Driver option.
You should now see the storage driver files listed.
If you check the box, it will only include the compatible driver.
Follow the prompts and hopefully, W7 will install.

  • Syncing itunes after fresh windows 7 installation

I want to reinstall Windows 7 in my PC. I have queries in my mind i.e How would I re-sync my itunes backup to my iphone without loosing my contacts, messages. Because if I reinstall my windows then it'll be like I am using my iPhone in some other computer.
Can anybody tell me the procedure:
like after installing windows and then after installing itunes what should I do to get my iphone to sync with my newly installed itunes without loosing contacts.
    Thank alot in advance

Here's how I would do it, assuming your library is consolidated (if not, post back and I'll write up some extra steps)...
To start with create a testable backup of your library.
Grab SyncToy 2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time. As long as the media is all organised below the main iTunes folder (consolidated) then the library is portable and you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes, even though it appears on a different path from the original.
When the time comes to migrate/reformat, do a final sync, close iTunes and open the backup copy on the external/network to make sure it functions properly. (Hold down shift when starting iTunes to choose a different library). Deauthorize the PC if you are upgrading on the same hardware or won't be using it again. Once you connect your external/network drive to the new system you should copy the entire iTunes folder into the new profile and then install iTunes. Install SyncToy again so that you can maintain the backup in future.
A library cloned in this fashion should (as far as iTunes is concerned) be identical to the library previously used to manage your devices, so none of the content should be disturbed.

  • Mountain Lion installation to new drive stuck

    Hi all,
My laptop drive was starting to suffer from regular I/O errors which would freeze the machine. I decided to get a new SSD, and used Recovery Assistant to make an existing external drive a Recovery Disk.
Everything seemed to go well, but now it's been stuck at "3 minutes remaining" for well over an hour. I'm starting to think that the only solution will be to force reset the computer, but of course I don't know what this will have done to my installation. Has anyone experienced this? Does anyone have any better suggestions than to try again?
    Thanks!
    Ed

    Hi,
Okay, so I restarted the mac and after reboot it continued with the installation - so no idea why it froze but if anyone else in in the same situation, probably it is actually finished with that step.
One gotcha that caused me an additionall stress - I was worried that there was an issue with the external drive I was using for the recovery, and so I used my imac to make a USB key into a recovery disk. This didn't work (I got the 'stop' symbol). I then tried another external disk. Same problem. By now I was getting very concerned... and went back to the original drive... which worked perfectly. As far as I can tell, you can't assume you can use a recovery disk made with another computer (even if they're on the same version of ML) with your laptop. I guess this is related to the drivers installed, but it is very very annoying of Apple (especially since the failure is so opaque).
    Anyway, I'm done now.
    Cheers,
    Ed

  • Windows Vista Installation on New Intel Mac

I bought a full version of Vista about two years ago. I removed it from the Intel Mac I had originally installed it on. Indeed, I've replaced the HD it was on, but for reasons other than removal of Vista.
I installed Vista successfully on a new Intel Mac, but it won't accept my Product Key.
I followed the instructions and tried the online activation. After entering a very long string of numbers, I received a curt, automated, "We do not recognize your registration number. Please call back at another time." The line then disconnected.
Various searches online have produced no result. The Microsoft help page has an article on registration, but all searches from it for my issue lead me back to that same page.
I assume that the fact that the OS was registered on the other machine has caused a problem, but I note that the license lets me install the OS on one machine. This, I am doing. As the OS was sickeningly expensive, I'd like to reinstall to get some use out of it.
    Any ideas?

That's sort of what I feared.
Considering that almost no one buys a "full license" to Windows other than factory installed on a machine or as an upgrade, I figured the problem I had would generally be unusual, except for people who installed it new on an Intel Mac, which is why I posted the question here.
I've not been able to find on Microsoft's help page a phone number to call Microsoft about this issue, and, as I said, all purported web-based solutions send me right back to the very same web page about product registration. If they weren't a monopoly, they wouldn't be able to get away with this.

  • Skype freezes after fresh windows 7 install on new...

Hello, ever since I freshly installed win 7 on a new ssd, I've had issues with Skype. The program consistently freezes when I'm typing a chat message. On top of this, the people I skype have said that my audio will lag out when I'm talking with them; I've noticed the program being unresponsive at those times.
Anyway, I've gone through the forums trying every solution I could find (e.g. fresh skype install, giving firewall perms, uninstalling messenger plus etc.), and I haven't been able to correct the problem. Sfc scannow has also returned no errors.
    I've attached the dxdiag report.
    Thanks for any help.

    DxDiag.zip ‏7 KB

Alright, the issue has been finally corrected. Skype no longer crashes randomly at launch, my friends can finally understand what I'm saying, and chat doesn't freeze.
What I did to correct the issue since the last update:
    - reinstall java
    - reset ie 11 settings
    - moved usb ps3eye cam to different usb port
Apparently my usb port is messed up... which is weird since it was fine before the fresh intall of win 7.
    Thanks for the help

  • Windows 7 Installation Media Only Boots into Recovery

Ever since I've updated to Windows 8, I have been really pleased. Everything works fine but when I was automatically updated to windows 8.1, I wasn't happy. I mostly use my PC for gaming and emulating my favourite classic game consoles. But windows 8.1 either
doesn't allow games to play, and makes my emulators run at 15 FPS (normally they run at 55-60). And now, I cant install Graphics drivers! I used to be able to on windows 8. 8.1 will not let me run any of my old Windows 7 Apps either,
So, after spending hours backing up my date, ready to start a fresh windows 7 installation, I figured out that I cannot upgrade, or even start the installation from the USB drive!
I had lots of issues with Windows Vista and used the same installation media to fix the OS. Now, the installation ONLY boots into recovery mode!
Luckily, I use Debian KDE on the side, So I am able to use my computer, but not play any games.
Is there any way to have the installation media boot into Win7 Setup?

    Hi,
Could you provide with a screen shoot?
Please test the USB drive in another pc.
If it is the same issue, it would be caused by the USB  drive.
And then follow the steps to create a bootable USB drive.
