Fried ethernet?

My Built-in ethernet stopped working yesterday, possibly as a result of a power surge through my DSL line while I was at work. Everything was dandy before I left for work, but when i returned many hours later, my connection was gone, and "Built-in Ethernet" had disappeared from the Network section of my System Preferences (meanwhile, it was still checked in Network Port Configurations). After trying to reconfigure the prefs for a while, I got Built-in Ethernet to reappear, but with the red dot and this message: "The cable for Built-in Ethernet is not plugged in."
The cable is indeed plugged in, the hub and the DSL modem are also functional, as I have other computers successfully using them. I've also switched out the ethernet cable with one I know works.
I tried the Apple Hardware Test on my G5 CD, and everything passed... leading me to believe this could be a software issue.
I checked my system log for yesteday, and it appears that my computer woke up and went back to sleep 3 times while I was at work yesterday. The 3rd time was during an electrical storm, and I found the message "posting notification com.apple.system.config.network_change" in the log at that time... don't know if that's a clue. I can post more of the log, if needed.
Anyone have any ideas about what the problem is or how I can fix it? Thanks!

Not sure what to suggest other than PMU/SMU reset, or reset nvram, and, make sure to filter cat5e when it leaves the router/switch and before it gets to your G5. Apparently even with a surge protector on your modem, that allows more through than ethernet ports can handle. Most UPS units offer both phone and ethernet filters and protection.
How about leaving it unplugged and pull the battery and let any static or trickle energy drain and see if that helps along with resetting the PMU.

  • Fried Ethernet port?

    My Late 2012 Imac (13,2) was brutally attacked by a power surge during a recent thunderstorm;
    it fried every connected ethernet port on my network (ie: modem, router, TV, AppleTV, TV receiver) and the ethernet port on my imac. Once i had the modem and router replaced; i find my ethernet port on my imac is dead; it still shows up in system profiler but no connection can be established;
of course i was a nitwit and didn't extend the coverage of my applecare, but i am wondering what steps i can take to get it back online, or if i need to take the imac in for repair.
and if i need to get it repaired, how much it would cost to have what i assume would be the logic board replaced?
any suggestions would be a great help!
In the mean time, i can still get online with my wireless card and gently weep for the loss of my damaged port.

AppleCare would not have fixed it any cheaper than without.  They only fix manufacturer defects.  The only foolproof way to prevent issues with lightning on a computer is to unplug it during a storm.    You can bring it in for repair, but it is unlikely to be cheap.   If your hard drive is still useable, get it removed and install it in an external hard drive case.   You'd be better off replacing the machine with a comparable machine used or refurbished*:

Unless you are certain that all your applications and drivers are 10.9 compatible:
    http://www.roaringapps.com/
OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download have 10.9 compatible updates from these vendors:
HP, Ricoh, Canon, Epson, Brother,Lexmark, Samsung, and Fuji/Xerox
OS X Mavericks: Supported digital camera RAW formats
In which case, you can get a new Mac which would have 10.9 prebundled.  Any Mac from
late 2013 on would have 10.9 prebundled and can't have 10.8 installed.

  • MBP Early 2011and half dead Ethernet.

    Hi,
My broadband internet modem (ADSL2+) is wired to the AirPort Extreme which in turn is wired to another airport express in another room. This creates a roaming network and all works well. I have a wired connection from the extreme to my MBP and the Ethernet on the MBP detects the connection just fine subsequently getting an assigned ip et al.This provides good speed and stability. I use wifi for all my other devices like iPhone, iPad and some other wifi  devices.
A few days back my ISP had issues and the technician came over to resolve the issue with the phone line. I then realised that my my MBP would not connect directly to the ADSL modem using Ethernet (assuming I had no wifi). I have tried different cables but nothing would get the Mac's Ethernet to detect the cable. It would just say cable unplugged. The same doesn't happen if I take a wired connection from the router using the same cable. I have also tried a different modem and the mac still won't connect directly to it. I would have thought the Ethernet is malfunctioning but what confuses me is that a wired connection from the router works just fine. As such I am forced to use wireless and cannot connect my mac to the modem directly. Is this a fried Ethernet port? If yes how does it work when a wired connection is taken from the router.
Here is what I have tried so far,
    - different cables.
    - different modem
    - different laptop (windows) - in this case the same cable and modem would work just fine with the windows laptop.
    - smc reset on mac
    - various settings on network preferences for LAN, Manual, automatic, MTU size, half full duplex arc.
    - setting the service order
    - disabling and rent bling the service.
A dead Ethernet is not even the last thing I would want as my mac is out of warranty and replacing the logics board would make a big whole in my pocket,
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

It often won't even boot far enough to start booting from the hard drive; so I doubt it's a dead HD.
Plenty of space was left. At last check, 20 GB. Probably a little less than that now, but not significantly so.
My restore discs are in storage at the moment, I'll be trying to dig them out later. But again, I can boot to Target Disk Mode; and it runs just as long as a "normal" boot would. When it crashed in TDM, the screen changed to static before it turned the screen all the way off. A second time, (since writing my first message,) booting into TDM crashed by merely 'freezing' the display, with the FireWire logo no longer jumping around, and the disk became unreadable from the host system. This is more than just a bad disk.
I will try to boot from the diagnostic disc, but I need to find it first. (Remodeled the home office earlier this year; and everything's all put in places I can't remember...)

  • I Would Like a "Expert's" config. of a new MBP

I was offered by my parants that they will but me a new MacBook Pro.  As much RAM as I want, the (solid stae) newer kind of HD, but about a year ago it was getting a bad rap from a lopt of comments I read on here.  I can't remember the exact name fo the HD, but I think it had solid state in it.  and I took a look at the new MBPs and there is a lot that is new to me.  My last MPB was about 4 years ago and did not have half as much of the functions and special parts as the newest one I could see online.
so, I am wondering for basic architecture (software use), i would like to start backing up but i never have excpet when I backed up on the CDs a long time ago,  and anything ele if someone gace you the chance to put together the most basic, but powerful MacBook Pro, what would you configure?  I do some arcitecture teaching on the side with grade school kids, and I teach online grad students in kinesiology and exercise rehabilitation.
Please anybody that can just put their ideal machine together, and any explnations I would appreciate it.  I will right off the bat go get the max in the RAM area.  Is it possible to get a battery that has a longer life?  I remember when I got this MBP there was supposed to be a  big difference but it has been the same maybe even a little worde than the previosu MAC.
this may sound stupid like a lot in this post, but is Lion the best and the lates OS.  I am getting the iPhone 4S from my sis so if there is anything I should get with the  MPB that I might use for the phone or visa-vera, I would like that.  I loved the Verizon MiFI2200 3G I had with this MBP, but it stopped working and no Verizon tech could get it to work, they suggested I go to the 4G.  I hear Verizon says they have 4G but they really don't.  somepone told me I could get a set-up that would turn the phone into a mobile hotspot but that may be beyond my mental ability.  I was thinking about just getting wither the Verizon Samsong 4g mobile hotspot or what replaced the MIFI22003G but in the 4G category.  the 3 G MIfi woked grest with my MBP but I have not read anything about the 4G that Verizon has out.  Both of my contracts ae up from my verizon phone and the MIFI2200 4G so they have a $50 NEw Every Two (which they stopped) but are still offering it to the people that had it coming so I have 2 of the $50 New Every Two rebate type $$ that I just subtract $50 from the any 2 devices.  I am using one for either the Samsong mobile hot spot or the MIFI 2200 4G (not sure if this is the right nae for the MIFI2200 3G replacement)
Also, is it better to get the machine and bring it back to the store so they can register the machine with the machine's name, and any other reason why I would want to take it back to the store?  I remember they did some things to may last one, like document some thing in various places which did help he a few times when asked for something by the genius bar, set up the One-to-One for me so I would sign in, I knew how many sessions I had, what topic areas I wanted to test, etc.
My final question, I am still using a CAT5 long kind of fryed ethernet cable.   A was reading a post on here that talked about the Blekin CAT6 ethernect cable is better if you take your machine to hotls that use the ethernet connection to get the internet, it will give you a slightly fast speed, independant of the speed the internet is gettting from the hotel.  Any thought on this or is still the basic CAT5 just as good?  I would like a little shorter one and more quality so the thing does not crack off from the main cable, the platic tab has a less chance of breaking off.
I think that is it.  It is a gift and I do not want to get anything and everything I can think of but I would like to get the best MacBook Pro the Experts would suggest.
I am hoping at least one or two experts will take uy questions seriously so I have some standard to go byt because there are so many new names for the latest MBP, I do not think I would know most of the devices I was selecting are.
Not sure if it possible, but does Mac come with USB 2.0 yet?  if so, I would like as many as those as I could.
Thanks.  I really do appreciate it.

There is no configuration of a MBP that will satisfy the needs of all users.  The variables are too many for the tasks that are required for the MBP to perform.
If cost is no object, the fastest CPU is a given as well as RAM.  Needs for same may be few and not often if ever used, but certainly will do no harm,
Storage is an issue of a HDD with greater capacity compared with the speed offered by SSD with lesser capacity.
Size can be important.  The convenience of portability of a 13" MBP with the larger and heavier 15" and 17' MBPs.
In the final analysis, you have to make these decisions.
    Ciao.

  • IP over Firewire Clobbering

Hi, I'm using an iMac DV running 10.4.6. It has a fried Ethernet jack, so I used to use a PowerBook G3 and do IP over Firewire Internet sharing. This worked great until I purchased an external Iomega 250GB HDD drive, and started using that as my iMac's boot disk. Now when I try to do this, the iMac locks up when the laptop is connected via Firewire and won't stop until I've unplugged the laptop. How can I get this setup to work and/or what other solutions do I have?
Possibly Relevant Fact: Before I was using the external drive as a boot disk, when I would plug my iPod into my iMac (using Firewire) while I was using Firewire Internet sharing, it would appear on the laptop, not the iMac.
iMac DV Special Edition   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes, I did this when I didn't have the external Firewire boot drive, and it worked correctly. My problem is that it freezes the iMac when I go to connect the two machines via a Firewire cord, regardless of whether Internet sharing is enabled. This is probably a more hardware/firmware-oriented problem, but I'm not really sure how to classify it.

  • Lion 10.7 won't boot up on my new mac 10.8.4

I have a new MacBook Pro 10.8.4. I need to boot up from 10.7 (Lion) for a recording job I am doing. The mixing desk I am using will only recognise Mac's which are 10.7 or ealier. I have Lion 10.7 installed on a USB drive but my mac won't recognise it or want to boot from it. Any suggestions?

Hiya. I'm presently waiting on my machine to attempt loading another stab at the installer drive, so I can't verify, but I'm pretty sure when I bought the first generation Intel Mac Pro it was a Dual Duo Core 2.66, which I upgraded about a year back to 8-core. I wondered about there being a difference in the creation of the installer drive made from the Airbook versus the Mac Pro, so loaded Lion Diskmaker 3b3 to Mac Pro and used it to make the installer from the Mac Pro, still no luck at present starting up from it. Again, in Startup Drive prefs, Snow Leopard recognizes it as a startup drive, just doesn't load when restarting from it.
Interesting you idea about there possibly being a difference in the Lion installer downloaded from the Airbook's App Store versus from the Mac Pro, though that relates back to the original (boring) problem. Here goes. I had bought Mountain Lion for the Mac Pro to meet system requirement for newly purchased Foundry product, Mari. (I later learn that my version Mac Pro tops out with 10.7.5, can't even get to Mountain Lion, but that wasn't revealed until this other, yet deeper problem was revealed, my not being able to login to my iTunes, which the system update requires. A much longer and more boring story ended by my learning that a fried Ethernet card was the problem. I knew of this bad Ethernet card, had been using a USB Ethernet adaptor, but when Lion first came out with introduction of the App Store, it was written into the code for the iTunes server to respond to a query by a user's iTunes login to first search for EN0, that being the build in Ethernet, to then establish handshakes around login info and checking what computer was being upgraded to what level, etc. Had this code been written more broadly to simply establish any type of Ethernet connection, e.g. USB or wireless, there'd be no problem, but now you see the catch 22. Having lost my Revovery HD partition vis a vis boring story A, and with no instal disks for Lion, and with no way to login to my App Store account to download my stored version of Lion, I can't try your tack of downloading from the machine being upgraded.
Pretty nuts, eh. Any other thoughts?
    Big thanks.

  • Hotel wireless internet portal.

    Hey guys,
I have a Macbook which recently had (I believe) it's logic board changed due to a fried ethernet port.
Since I got it back, it doesn't seem quite the same. Perhaps the most frustrating issue is this . . .
I can connect to WiFi networks at the hotels I stay at without problem, however, when I open Safari, it won't automatically redirect to the portal which I need to access in order to pay for the internet service.
I've discovered that, in some cases if I type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar it will find the portal page, but not always.
It didn't do that before. Is there a setting I'm missing??
    Thanks!

    sounds like a dns issue.

  • Lighting fried my Ethernet port

A Lightning strike fried my Router and Ethernet Port.
I've bought and new asdl router and this works with my laptop.
I've done a hardware test on my desktop g4 and everything appears fine. Using both the 'System Profile' and 'Hardware Test' the ethernet hardware is visible i.e. it tells me I have "built-in ethernet" and that nothing is awry. Connecting the g4 to the router with a new cable no light turns on indicating that a conection is made and the network preferences on the g4 state "The cable for Built-in Ethernet is not plugged in."
Has anybody replaced the physical port for their built in ethernet?
Or do I just buy myself an Scsi ethernet card and plug this in?
Are there any command line tools for diagnosing the status of the ehternet port with more detail than "the cable isn't plugged in'?
    cheers, ewan.

Many UPS models have an RJ-45 that you want to use for wired connections between the modem and router/switch. Even if you have a surge protector on your phone line before it gets to the modem (and you should) it still lets through more than is safe.
Just add a PCI ethernet card. Take a look on www.xlr8yourmac.com
    or www.macwireless.com has them also.

  • Ethernet port fried by lightning strike?

My phone line and home was struck by lightning this weekend. All of the DSL filters in my home were fried and blown open simultaneously, the DSL modem was fried, and even with a new modem, I cannot connect. Is there any way (without taking it in) to test the ethernet port itself? Is there some sort of internal diagnostic that can detect a faulty port? The computer works fine otherwise. IF the port is dead, is it better to buy a new computer? (My insurance is covering all damages), or is the cost to repair something like this minor? I have read about using an airport as a go-around, but I'd rather fix the problem, not patch it. ANY and all info will be helpful. Thanks.

If the Ethernet port on an iMac is fried, you can replace that port only by _replacing the entire motherboard_. Depending on the kind of motherboard, the price could be several hundred dollars. It might be more cost-effective to get a new computer.

  • Can't login to Mac App store on mac mini. Is it because my ethernet port is fried?

    Hi
like many others, I am unable to log in to the mac app store on my mac mini.  I get the error message saying "An unknown error has occured". I believe the ethernet port is damaged after an electrical storm, but I can still get online wirelessly.  I've read on these forums that the app store verifys the account using the ethernet port.  Can anybody confirm if this is the case, is there a workaround that anyone knows of?
I can log into the App store on my laptop fine, just not the mac mini.
    Thanks in advance
    Paul

This is happening on 2 of my machines.  One is OSX Lion, the other OSX Mountain Lion.  My personal rig works just fine - all on the same network, all with the same basic configuration.  All can log in and out of iTunes, but the two servers can't login via Appstore. My rig and one of the servers even use the same Ethernet driver, so it's not that.
I would seriously doubt your Ethernet card would be working at all if it was indeed damaged by the lightning.  The transducers are relatively sensitive, and it would either fry or not.  You won't get "intermittent" operation as you have described.  Here is a list of all the things I've tried (based on a number of forum suggestions), none of which has worked:
    1) Sign out of itunes, sign back in, try to sign in to AppStore.
    2) Re-enter information in  your account info and save it again (knew that wasn't it but tried anyway).
    3) Ran AppStore as root.
    4) Using EFIStudio, I got the hex string ID of my ethernet card and specifically reference "device-properties" in the boot.plist.  Others  have said this works, so you might give it a try -
    http://legacy.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=169&t=28477
    5) Deleted all other ethernet devices to avoid "confusion" of the return.
    6) Verified I can get HTTPS returned from NAT device.
    7) Used Wireshark to get a packet capture of it working on mine and not working on the other.  On the one that doesn't work, all I get is a couple of SYNs to the appstore and then nothing.  It was along these lines that I was hoping the "device-properties" would work.
I just thought of something though.  If I don't see that ACK at all, it might be sending the packets somewhere else.  hmmm.  I'm going to hard-code in all HTTPS to be routed to that box and try it just for S&G.
    Good luck!

  • Ethernet fried - will airport still work

I have my mother's "old" 17" FP iMac G4 that was the victim of a lightning surge through the cable modem. She took it in and had it diagnosed and was told that the ethernet port was not working and to fix it, the logic board would need to be replaced. I have had it for several months now and it seems fine except for the ethernet port. It has had no freeze-ups, or strange behavior, and is always on and heavily used.
Would I still be able to use an AirPort Extreme card in this computer? Or, would that be tied somehow to what was damaged?
    Thanks in advance.
    iMac 17 1Ghz - 4G 20GB iPod   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I can't answer your question regarding the Airport Extreme Card, but I had this same thing with lightning happen to my Ethernet Port. I didn't really want spend the money to have the Logic Board replaced. I did a little research and found an external ethernet device which seems to be working. My problem was that I had OS 9 and could not find one compatible, until I located this company on the internet. BPI Broadband Poducts. Their website is www.broadbandproducts.com. They were extremely helpful. They are really a wholesaler, but sent me the product anyway. The part number was: BUE1U USB to 10/100 Fast Ethenet Adapter. Hope this information helps you or someone who else who had a close encounter with lightning.

  • Is my Ethernet port fried?

In the last couple of days I've noticed that I can no longer talk to either of my two DSL routers using a cable and DHCP. Every time I connect either of them to my iMac G5, Network prefs tells me that a self-assigned IP is in use and that I may not be able to connect, which is indeed the case. However, I can connect either router to my Airport Express and then wirelessly connect from my iMac, so DHCP is certainly working, as I can verify if I look at the router's configuration pages in this setup.
So, does this mean the Ethernet port in my iMac has gone belly-up in some way? Is there any way to reset the Ethernet hardware and get it to talk to the routers again?
    Thanks.

UPDATE: Networking has returned to normal! But the way it happened is, to my mind, pretty unbelievable.
I said in my previous post I was just heading out. I was getting to ready to leave, and the computer had gone to sleep. But then, just like it's been doing in the last couple of days and occasionally in previous weeks, I heard the computer's fan suddenly start up and go absolutely crazy, like the iMac was burning up. As usual, there was no option but to do a hard shutdown as the computer will not wake from sleep when this happens. Restarted the computer and, after the 5-minute blue screen, logged in here to read up on what could have caused this sleep issue. Decided to reset the SMU and lo and behold, after I did that, the startup delay disappeared and when I connected my router by wire to the computer, the iMac immediately picked up a correct IP address via DHCP!
So, somehow resetting the SMU has cured all the problems I've been having for the last 48 hours. I'm frustrated but now happy as well.
