Fried second motherboard

My G5 is now getting its third motherboard in its less than two years of life. I have not abused the thing. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can keep it from ruining other motherboards once it's out of warrantee?
I used to find Apple computers very reliable, but now both of my machines are having quality problems beyond my wildest nightmares.

You may be entitled to a new computer if you have AppleCare and/or the repairs were done under one of Apple's 2 Extension Repair Programs.

Apple isn't selling it. Someone may be, but it is not Apple. If you open your device, you relinquish your warranty. Take it to the Apple Store and see what they can do for you.

  • Second motherboard goes bad

    Hi there,
my iMac G5 rev A needs another motherboard replacement. This is the second one in 14 months, and now I wonder if this is just bad luck, or should I think about possible reasons for that kind of failure? The first time I had the motherboard replaced was seven months after I bought the machine, the second one again after seven months since the last replacement. My temperatures have been very constant (between 49 and 52 C for the HD, and between 52 and 55 for CPU). Could there be something else I am missing? Or is it just rev A blues?
    Zo

Heat is the culprit in most of the problems with the Rev As and some rev Bs. I owned a rev A iMac G5 and had 5 issues, major issues and in the end, on the 13th month I had it replaced because I had had SOOOO many problems and failures with the computer. Luckily I got a Rev C or iSight iMac G520 " and lemme tell you, the huge changes they did on the inside and adding the vent on the center of the back panel really has made this a much more stable computer. Gone are the noisey fans and HIGH run temps. This model is rock solid now. If you havent looked Ill link the comparison photos on just how much they changed this computer since Rev A. Its amazing!
I'd go for a replacement. It sounds like you have several documented major issues, if you push it and are calm, they may just give you one. ( If you are so inclined that is.) I had to debate my case for 2 hours very calmly and finally got someone who could see that after 5 major repairs, the computer just wasnt working as intended.
Anyway, good luck and heres that photo so you can see just what the prob was/is for the Rev As and Bs. Look at how they completely rearranged the internals, putting heat generating components at the top instead bottom and moving the Ram away from the processor. The fans are even at the bottom, where they should be instead on the bottom. Anyway, enjoy, good luck to you.

  • New motherboard but laptop starts for 2 seconds only

I Have fried my motherboard, according to the man in the repair shop after spilling water. So I bought a used one (tested as working) off the internet. It was labelled as the correct model number. I replaced the fried board.
As far as i could tell everything went ok except centre screw holding keyboard which won’t go in, also bluetooth module wire adaptor needed soldering but had to use bluetack, but don't think this is connected with my new problem.  Now when i try to fire up from mains or battery all lights come on and hard drive tries to start, but after two seconds it just gives up and goes off. It is a hp pavilion dv6700. Don’t know what could cause this. The shop said my hardrive was ok when i first took it in.  Any ideas welcome. Thanks in advance.

You either got a bad board or hosed it during soldering.

  • I think my motherboard might be done. :(

Here's my post from another forum:
I started having problems with my computer a few weeks ago, and they just kept getting worse and worse.
    Here are my specs:
    Intel Q6600
    MSI P6N SLI Platinum
500W Ultra PSU (crappy, I know)
I originally had 2x2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800MHz (1.8V) in my PC, but it kept freezing sporadically. The freezing got more and more frequent, until it came to the point where I couldn't even boot up.
I tried different DIMMs, but they were all causing issues. I tried the following sets:
    Crucial Ballistix 2x1GB 1066MHz (2.0V)
    Crucial Ballistix 2x1GB 1066MHz (2.2V)
    G.Skill 2x1GB 800MHz (1.8-2.0V)
Memtest passed on every single Ballistix stick, but it failed if I put two sticks in at a time. I can only run Windows with one stick. The G.Skill sticks don't even post (not even with just one stick). One of the Corsair sticks posted, but crashed before Windows could boot up. The other Corsair stick didn't post. I also got random beeping from the computer when I had two sticks (don't remember which set) in. I also had weird letters show up a few times on the screen when the computer failed to post.
I tested the Corsair stick (the only one that would post) on Memtest, and it failed it. I put both sticks in my brother's computer, and they both ran Windows 7 completely fine. I didn't Memtest them though. The G.Skill DIMMs were also in my brother's computer, and they ran it completely fine as well. (These were also in my computer a few years ago, running it fine).
I really don't know what to do. This all started happening after I cleaned all of the wires underneath my desk. I don't know if I somehow fried my motherboard, and I'm still confused as to how I can stably run Windows 7 with only 1 Ballistix DIMM, yet fail to even boot up with other ram.
I've tried resetting the CMOS, removing all other PCI cards, switching my graphics card (I also recently upgraded from a 7900GS to a GTS 250), and a few other things. I'm at wit's end. Can anyone help?
I flashed the BIOS again using the tool I found in the forum here (I already had the latest version (1.7) so I just flashed it with 1.7 again). Everything looked good again. I put the G.Skill memory in, and it booted/ran perfectly fine for a few minutes. I turned it off, and put the Corsair memory back in. I started playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to test the system (as it was freezing playing this game before), and after about 10 minutes, the computer froze. I restarted it, and the computer started beeping incredibly fast. The entire process started all over again. So now I'm back on 1GB of Ballistix RAM. :(
Should I go to an older version of the BIOS? I don't know why the computer is acting so strangely. It's been running fine for over 2 years, but it's recently decided to act up.

I've tried that. It doesn't help. The computer ONLY stays stable (or boots) with a 1GB DIMM of RAM. I borrowed my friend's power supply and tested the computer, and it still gave me the same problems. I'm 99.9% sure it's the motherboard.
I've never had so many problems with a motherboard as I've had with MSI boards. I've built lots of computers, including two systems with MSI boards, and both of those systems have crapped out on me while all the others haven't given me any problems. I had to RMA the motherboard on the other system (luckily I was still under warranty), and it looks like I'll have to RMA this board as well. Sadly, this is my third year so I'll have to pay to have it fixed. This is ridiculous considering how expensive these particular boards were when I bought them. This is probably the last time I ever buy or recommend a MSI product.
Thanks for all the help everyone. I greatly appreciate it. I don't think there's anything else I can do except send this back to MSI to hopefully have it fixed.

  • Replace AMD motherboard with a Intel motherboard????

I have a DV9000 that has a AMD board with the bad video. This is the second motherboard and I'm done with this board. My question.... Is there a Intel version that will fit in this case? What motherboard number?

You're welcome, when you have a chance please hit the KUDOS button. I am going to assume that you will be looking for a used Mother Board or are the links I gave, for the wrong ones ?

This is the message I got from the person. "this phone will not hold a charge. I took it to a repair shop, and was told the battery was shot. I purchased a new battery, and the phone continues to shut off, even though it's at 58% charge. Took it BACK to the repair shop, and was informed this was a software AKA motherboard issue. They could not repair it!!"
Me personally I wouldn't refund the money to this person.
It could've been the shop that fried the motherboard by replacing the battery - as Apple doesn't sell replacement part.
His issue is now the repair shop.  IF it really was a motherboard issue, they've would've known the first time he took it in.

  • Replacing the motherboard in my DV9700t

I recently fried the motherboard on my DV9700t and need to replace it. The part number for the board is 481069 and its the model that includes the nVidia 8600m GS with 512mb of video ram. I'm looking around Ebay for a replacement and that exact model runs around $200. I've seen boards with the part number of 481068 which is just one number off of mine for about $80 less. As far as I can tell it only has less video ram. I am unsure of the processor though.
Can anyone help me figure out what my options are for replacing it? I want to keep at least a similar video card (something in the 8600 series), but if the only difference between the two boards I've found is less video ram then I'll just get that as I dont need 512mb of video ram in my laptop. Are there any other similar boards I can look at too?
just as a note; I need the dual SATA ports and I want to stick with Intel so I can use the same processor. As far as I can tell everything else works in it.
    Thanks.

You may have difficulty finding your exact motherboard unless you go to HP.  Your current processor chip can be reinstalled on the replacement board.  It's probably best to have a pro do it.

  • Fried mobo?

Recently got together all the components I needed to build a new pc. Now I bought an msi neo2 platinum. Now since i'd bought a zalman reserator 1 plus I needed to remove the back plate to install the cpu waterblock. Problem is I didn't be very gentle with the hairdryer putting it on the hottest setting and just pretty much sticking it ontop of the metal backplate until the glue was weak and then prised it up with a scerw driver (another mistake) and it came off perfectly began building etc everything else went well but once everything was ready to roll the problems started. I switched on the power to hear 1 long beep and a short pause and the LEDs on the back of the panel light up as to show a memory error. Now I've since switched the corsair twinx I was using and tried a generic 512 stick and that didn't work either then another just to be sure and no luck. Could I have possible fried the motherboard with the hairdryer leading to the memory slots dieing? Also i'm using a cheap £10 600 watt brandless powersupply (not good either). I'll post my specs if you want them.

O.K. i'll give the psu specs in an hour or so got some work to do. But when I have the PSU connected and switch on the computer all the fans are functioning etc could this be a psu problem also I read this comment on a review of the powersupply (cheap ebuyer generic brand power supply) it said this:
The DC rails are stable and within +/- 5% limits. But the +12V rail is marginally on the LOWER side, i.e. at +11.68 to 11.74V. However its maximum current is 17A which may not be enough for major fast CPU upgrades such as AMD A64 3200+ or over as these CPUs rely heavily on the +12V rail capacity. I am doubted.
Someone care to explain that in english? Also i'll get back to you on the powersupply specifications in an hours time.

  • No power up to new motherboard installation

I have recently upgraded my older out dated pc with a new MSI motherboard (MS-6585) & P4 2.4ghz CPU.
The problem i am having is that there is no power from the PSU unit (new Intel recommended P4 PSU). Not even the fans on the PSU starts.
This is the second motherboard i have had in the last month with the same problem!!!
    Can anyone help, please  ;(

    Hi, Thanks for replying
    I've got 2 new power supply units, 1 400w & 1 300w.
I've also built pc's before but never come across this problem.
When i install the motherboard and attach the essential leads i still get no power to the CPU or from the power supply. The only thing i can think of is that the on board battery is dead. Thats all i can think of.
    What do you suggest??

  • Z77A-GD65 won't post

My newly built PC wouldn't start the other day:
    Z77A-GD65 motherboard
    Core i5 3570K
    8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
    GTX 660
    Corsair TX 750W PSU
    Corsair Hydro 100i CPU Cooler
    Corsair Obsidian 650D tower
It sort of tried to power up, fans would start spinning and then 1 second later it would all power down. This cycle would continue until I switched it off at the PSU. I took a look inside and noticed that the DRMOS red LED was lighting up. The LED 1 was also flashing blue.
All the reading I did on the problem suggested either the PSU or the motherboard was on the blink, so before I RMAed the motherboard I bought a new Corsair CX 750M PSU and set the motherboard on a wooden table top with just the RAM, CPU and standard Intel cooler inserted.
Now the DRMOS light no longer comes on but the LED 1 light flashes and goes out, the system "reboots", this cycle continuing until I switch off the power. The CPU fan isn't even spinning up now though.
    Now 2 things:
    1. The motherboard I got cheap as an "open box" item from Aria PC, so I have a feeling it may have been dodgy to begin with.
    2. My old PSU didn't have an 8-pin EPS connector so I bought an adapter than plugged into the old style standard 4-pin IDE drive power connector. I hope this hasn't somehow fried the motherboard!
I can't find anything that tells me what the LED 1 light flashing on its own in this way means. Does anyone know?
Please tell me it's just the motherboard that's fried and not my beloved 3570K!
Should also say the debug LED panel doesn't even light up with any values and I've also tried switching the BIOS to A (it was set to B for some reason). I've also tried clearing the CMOS. Didn't help.

A0 is IDE Detect if its stopping there your drive mode sounds like its not set correctly as its not seeing your OS drive if its hanging! and AD is Ready to Boot Event (loading OS) this is either a OS from a different chipset or a bad drive mode or both happening!
Agree. It sounds so close to working. Maybe the onboard graphics will work to try and figure out how to get it set up right.
Also sounds like he may need a clean formatted HDD/SSD to place a fresh OS install on.

  • Two 8800 GT in 2008 Mac Pro (NO SLI)

I was wondering if an Apple tech could give me an answer on this subject; or anyone, really.
I want to get a new Mac Pro with an 8800 GT. I would like two of them, and would purchase the second as the add-on kit from the Apple Store. Now, will two be supported?
Power Draw: 220 watts, so it's under the limit
Power cables: they each need an external one, and there are at least two in the Mac Pro
PCIe slots: there are two 16x 2.0 slots, so bandwidth wouldn't be a problem
    Just... can it be done?
Also, on the nVidia website, they state that the 8800 GT has only one dual-link DVI port. In addition to this, they state that you can have four 8800 GT in your Mac Pro. *This needs to be fixed before someone fries their motherboard!*
Message was edited by: Tallest Skil

So, I just ordered my new MacPro with the 8800GT and also got the add-on kit for the extra 8800GT...I will be powering a total of 3 24-inch Dell monitors with the 2 cards. They will go in slots 1 and 2, the 16x slots. According to my Apple business rep, they will work no problem. However, I still have 2 additional questions myself on this:
    1. Where did you learn that the 8800GT draws 110 watts? I just can't find that stat anywhere...
    2. Assuming you are right that they draw 110 watts, and with 2 that means 220 watts, and we know for a fact that we have an absolute ceiling of 300 watts on the PCI bus, am I going to have a problem if I am also running the BTO Raid Card that uses slot 4???
    ...or phrased another way...
    3. Does the MacPro RAID card use more than 80 watts? If it does, I am likely SOL to run all 3 of these powerful PCI cards at the same time...that would suck but would lead to one final question...
    4. If I am SOL on the use of all 3 because of power draw, would the ATI Radeon 2600 possibly have less draw than the 8800GT, in which case I may be able to run 2 of those instead of the 8800GT's, along with my RAID card?
Basically, the RAID card is not optional for me, I will be using it, no question. If push came to shove, I would move down to the 2600 graphics cards if the 8800GT's are too much power draw.
Good thread man, I can't seem to find power draw spec on the RAID card. AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

  • Why won't HP dv6000 power on?

    Hello everyone!
    First off:
    Product name and number: HPdv6000
    Operating system: Vista
    Error message: Blue screen
Changes to system before issue occurred: No.
In December of 2009, my laptop abruptly powered off. It has not been animate ever since.
Here is what happens. When I try to power the laptop on, it will, but only for three seconds. The directory buttons will illuminate blue. Proceeding this it will power off. Zip and the blue retreats. Nothing.
I'll add a couple details that might or might not be useful in this amateur diagnosis/speculation.
    1. The laptop will power on with the battery removed and power cord connected.
    2. The laptop will power on with the power cord connected and battery inserted only if the batter is removed and then reinserted.
    3. The charge indicator light does not illuminate in either instance.
I have a hunch that it is a motherboard malfunction (Or possibly a virus). I, personally, think that I have fried the motherboard. Typically, I placed the laptop on my lap. Certainly a huge "don't." I eventually bought a laptop stand. I was too late.
I'd much appreciate any thoughts on what the culprit might be that is hindering my laptop inoperable. On another note, HP recalled this particular laptop in 2009 (I think) because of motherboard failure. Unfortunately, I located my receipt a day late.
    Thank you!
    -Teanpa

Remove the hard disk and try powering on.
    please post your results.
If you can enter BIOS, do a hard disk diagnostic test.

  • Any Preventive Maintenence?

    Just Wondering,
I have been reading some of the posts about dying G-5's and wondering about something. I'm new to mac but built a few pc's ,not afraid to dig into a computer case. I have changed a dvd r/w and added a hard drive and swapped video cards in the mac but never even looked at the cooling system. Is there any p.m. to do this (ie. tighten clamps ,fittings etc)other than the norm keep the dust out to keep the heat/ "head" pressure down?
On a second note I've read about alot of psu failures but none have seemed to taken out the whole system( or I missed them) My first pc built roaasted after 3 1/2 yrs when the psu fried and literally fried the motherboard, vid card, memory only harddrive survived (thankfully)
My g-5 is going on 4 years but WOW psu's for this thing are not something I want to change on a whim. Really like this computer and dont want to spring for a new one, so was just wondering.

    Hi Kurt,
I took the whole system apart to clean it up including the powersupply, here's my post

I stuck a very thin sheet of wool to prevent dust from getting in. I still have it on, and no problems so far except a few degrees of temperature increase.

  • Laptop breaks down after new BIOS installation

    Hi ,
My laptop HP 2000 - 2d11x is  nearly a year old now. My problems started last month when my laptop started overheating and shutting down randomly. Now my laptop is completely unusable. I do not know what happened to it but I suspect that the incompatible BIOS installed recently in my computer caused its break down.
The first problem I had with this laptop is its overheating . I bought a usb cooling fan for it but the overheating persisted. Then, one day my laptop randomly shut down. For many days the laptop shuts down every hour or so when I use it. Then one day I took the battery out and started using the laptop without the battery. It worked continously and did not shut down but the overheating problem got worse.
Couple of days later I inserted the battery and the whole unit shut down. I tried again and again but my laptop keeps shutting every 5 seconds after I inserted the battery which is half charged. I cannot charge it properly because the laptop shuts down. It went on till my battery was out of charge and I can not use it anymore.
During this time my laptop only works when I plug it without battery.
I thought my battery was the problem so I stopped using it and asked HP Support for replacement since my laptop is still under warranty and I have no money to buy a new one. The agents I talked with in chat support, denied my requests for battery replacement. The first one promised to call me and said he talked with his supervisor about my problem. I waited for 48 hours but he didn't call or email me. The next agent I chat with remote accessed my computer and installed BIOS. I do not remember what kind of BIOS was it but all I remember is its a BIOS. The agent asked me to try and put the battery but the laptop shut down. It restarted and I waited a long time before it started. When it was finally restarted the agent and the connection was gone. My battery problem was still not solved. The third agent I talked with again asked to remote access my computer. Then he said that HP cannot replace my battery because battery shipment is prohibited by Bureau of Customs.  My father bought this laptop abroad in the US and we are living in the Philippines. I was frustrated and thought I will just have to use the laptop without battery.  A day later something horrible happened. My laptop did not start anymore even when I plug it with the adapter! The lights blink and goes out after 10 or so seconds when I click the start button.
Now my laptop is broken, black screen and completely unusable.
I researched a bit and realized that HP and overheating issues always went hand in hand.. I'm suspecting that the BIOS update was improperly done and the overeheating fried my motherboard. If this is the, then it's the HP technician's fault for making things worse. I hope they replace the laptop or atleast fix it. They're not taking imported laptops seriously and this really angers me because HP laptops by default come with the ITW (International Traveller's Warranty). I need your advice on what to do.

    Hello armela,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your system was overheating and shutting down, and after a BIOS update you are no longer able to start up the notebook.
Here is a great document to walk you through restoring the BIOS to the original factory version and settings: Restoring the BIOS
If that does not resolve the issue, here is a good place to start troubleshooting startup problems (choose which link best represents your issue):

Once you are able to get the system to boot, you may want to take a look at this document to troubleshoot the overheating issue, so we can prevent this from happening again: Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating
If you are still experiencing problems take a look at our Global Warranty and FAQs. You will want to contact support in the region which you are currently located, in this case, the Philippines. You can reach them by phone at this number: 1-800-88-8588 - Mon-Fri 08:30 - 17:30 (excl PH)
