Frist Gen Shuffle no longer recognized.

I had a original iPod shuffle that i used for years. I misplaced it and recently found it again.
It worked fine when I last used it. iTunes does not see the shuffle. It does not show up in the system profiler under any OS and I've tried 4 different Macs. And it also does not show up as a flash drive.  I thought that at the very least it should show up as a USB flash drive with a dead battery
So my question is: when the battery dies does this iPod shuffle cease working altogether?
I have no way to trouble shoot it if I can't get any computer to recofgnize it.  If what I am experiencing is a known issue because of a bad battery then I would be fine replacing it with a new battery HOWEVER if it has a dead logic board (which would be weird since it worked when I misplaced it and it hadn't been distiurbed until I found it again) then i don't want to waste the money and time trying to repair it.

A few years ago, I bought some broken 1st gen shuffles on eBay, because I wanted to see if I could swap parts and get a few working shuffles.  It worked, but I found that most of those broken 1st gen shuffles were broken because the built-in USB plug was faulty.  So that is the most common failure, and the symptom is exactly what you describe.  No connection.  No light on shuffle.  Not recognized by computer in any way.  That may be why Apple changed the design for the 2nd gen shuffle.
If you have tried four Macs, I think you have ruled out a problem with the USB port.  On one of the Macs, try disconnecting all USB devices (except standard keyboard/mouse if normally used).  Do this to reset the shuffle
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
and connect the shuffle to a direct USB port.  If the Mac is a MacBook, connect the power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).
There is a special "reset utility" for the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle
http://support.apple.com/downloads/iPod_Reset_Utility_1_0_3_for_Mac
but it's useless if the shuffle is not at least recognized by the Mac when connected.

    Hello,
I've been reading over the posts on this subject and decided to add another one to the mix. I recently installed iTunes 7.1 against my better judgement, as I'd cancelled dozens of times before. Much to my dismay the shuffle that I own is no longer recognized by iTunes or Windows. I have tried the shuffle reset utility but as my shuffle is not recognized by my computer...it doesn't work. I would appreciate any help that someone might have, and if it's possible to roll my iTunes back to a previous version I'd like to know. Thanks,

Suggest you find another computer and see if Shuffle is recognized and apply reset utility to it there.

  • IPod Shuffle (1st gen) is not longer recognized by computer or iTunes

I have had no problems with my iPod until this morning. I have the latest version of iTunes and recharge my battery pretty regularly on the shuffle. However, this morning my iPod isn't showing up in iTunes or on my USB port. It's not even charging. I tried 4 out of the 5 R's, but can't do the last because the iPod icon isn't showing up. It still plays songs with the battery life left.
Checked the USB port, and it's working fine. Battery light on shuffle is now red. What do I do?

    Hi hmacross,
I tried one of the options in the link you provided, 'iPod not recognized when connected to Windows laptop over USB'. It didn't work but now my Shuffle is flashing orange as it does when it is charging on my XP machine. So at least we have power to it I think.
I still have do detection in Windows Explorer, Device Manager or iTunes however.
All the other options I have already tried.
    Still scratching my head lol.
Thanks for you help anyway. Got any other ideas?

  • 1st Gen Shuffle not charging, recognized by Windows or iTunes

    Hi,
Got an iPod Shuffle (1st Gen, 512mb) from a friend the other day. He'd owned it for less than a year and had bought an iPod video, which is why he gave the shuffle to me. It was working great. Windows recognized it. iTunes recognized it. Moved my music library over to it. Charged it.
Came home last night and plugged it in. Nothing. No charge light. Windows didn't see it. iTunes didn't see it. Tried the 5 R's. Tried a bunch of things found on the boards here. Unplugged it - it still had a charge from before and played music just fine. Thinking that the USB connector spontaneously died on the Shuffle. Any suggestions/ideas? Anyone else have this problem and find a solution short of replacing it?

Exact same thing happened my my wife's 1st gen 512MB Shuffle last week. Still plays music, but no longer charges or shows up as connected to the computer (PC or Mac). I figured the same as you... seems as though the USB connector is dead.
Her fix was to head to the Apple Store for a new gen 2 Shuffle that same day since she "can't live without it". Her original shuffle saw 22 months of very heavy use (car, gym, jogging) and bouncing around in her purse/backpack, so I guess it did have a good run.

  • My Shuffle no longer recognized in Windows

I am having trouble with my 1 GB shuffle. It had been working rather well for several months but now it is not recognized by XP Pro or iTunes. It does however get charged when I connect it to the USB port. Also, the USB subsytem on my computer does work since I can connect my camera to it with no problems. I have worked my way thru this document:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
and nothing has worked so far.
Restoring the iPod software doesn't work because the computer (and thus the iPod Updater) doesn't see that the device is plugged in.
I am now on the last step of the original document which is reinstalling the iPod software for Windows:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61669
I put that disc in my computer and it wants to uninstall the iPod software. I am concerned that this will delete my purchased muic, podcasts and my podcast subscriptions. Will this stuff all be imported safely when I uninstall it and then reinstall it?
Also, any help people can offer on why my shuffle isn't being recognized would also be great too.

I too have fell victim to your situations. I have not done any changes either. This stopped working a couple days ago. I have music on the shuffle and it plays fine. As soon as I plug it into either of my 4 PCs, Windows does not detect the shuffle. Every single one of them detects my jump drive as well as digital camera. I know that I don't have all four of my systems to auto update in Windows so I don't think that has anything to do with it. Also, I left my headphones in the shuffle as I plug it into any of the PCs and my music stops playing. Which is an indicator that the shuffle detects something connecting to it; my PCs fail to. It's all strange....

IF it's still in warranty, take it to an Apple Store for a replacement... IF not, you can try the Reset Utility:

  • Shuffle Not Longer Recognized/Charging on Laptop

I bought an iPod Shuffle 1 GB in February, and it's been working fine. Two weeks ago, I plugged it in the usual USB port for charging, and neither iTunes nor Windows recognizes it, and it will not charge. Nothing is different on the laptop (Dell Inspiron 2650) or Windows XP (SP 2). I've read discussions on here and tried making sure the ports are active (they work) and uninstalled/re-installed iTunes 4.9. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I bought a 1Gb iPod Shuffle in March, and I have the same problem. My iPod plays songs the songs on it, but when connected to my laptop, or computer it is notrecognised by windows or iTunes.

  • 4th Gen shuffle not recognized by Mac OS. What's wrong?

I've been through two 4gen shuffles within a week. Connected them to my NEW MacBook Pro, with up-to-date iTunes. Say's they're currupted. Restore won't work. Tried the connection on another Mac, same thing.
Just for the heck of it, I connected it to my work "Windows" machine and iTune for Window's recognizes it just fine.  What's wrong?
This shuffle should just work on my Mac with no issues! Not happy, not happy at all.

After a trip to the Apple and over two hours with three different Apple speciaists, not luck in resolving this issue. The 4th Gen shuffle is not recognized. The Apple Store confirms that the Shuffle is fine and works on their Macs in the store.
    Steps taken so far...
Removed iTunes and re-installed twice, did not resolve the issue.
    Removed Symantec Norton Security Suite.
Performed an Archive Install of Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard
Ran various disk utilities, still than same.  The Apple Disk utilitiy continuely shows errors on the shuffle.
Tried the shuffle on my wifes new 27" iMac, the same thing happens on her Mac.
Multiple restores through iTunes, no luck.

  • 2ndd gen Shuffle not recognized in OSX/iTunes after OSX/Itunes update

After updating two iMacs to 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 my 2nd gen Shuffle isn't recognized on either.
    1. It still plays music so I know it's not dead
    2. It stopped syncing after updating but not sure which update could be the cause.
    3. I've tried rebooting the computer(s)
    4. I've tried the iPod restore utility and it doesn't recognize the iPod at all.
Is there anything else I've missed?

I've had this exact issue for a couple of weeks. I finally managed to drive the hour+ to our nearest Apple store. To my great frustration they were able to have my Shuffle connect perfectly to their machine, yet it still is not recognized by my Intel Mini or my hubby's PC. It sits in the cradle and flashes yellow like it's charging, but is otherwise unrecognized by my computer. When I try the reset utility it is "aware" that my Shuffle is there, but cannot retrieve serial # data or disk spaced used...the iPod is never ready for reset.
At this point I don't know what to do...buy a new 4th gen. Shuffle in the hopes that it works? I'm not sure if the issue is with my iPod or my computer or iTunes.... I'm contemplating switching to another player entirely, even if it means having to burn all my music to CDs and reimport as Mp3s.
Adding to my frustration, I purchased my Shuffle only in April from SmallDog.com. I purchased what was SUPPOSED to be a brand new, with full warranty Shuffle. I found out today that the iPod was registered almost 2 years ago when Small Dog received it and stocked it in their warehouse, so I essentially paid full price for a shuffle sans warranty. Apparently Small Dog is not the only company that pulls this BS. A purchase may not be warrantied for a full year (or for any time) from anyone other than Apple.

  • 1st gen ipod nano with a frozen screen no longer recognized by computer

I have an ipod nano (1st gen) with a frozen screen that is no longer recognized by any computer.  I had just barely downloaded a new audio book onto it before ejecting from itunes and trying to play it when it froze.  Since then I have tried updating my itunes,  plugging it into a second computer, and turning it off by holding the pause button, but nothing seems to work.  Suggestions? Or, has it just reached the end of its lifespan?

    Hi caitt,
I don't know if "what Apple said to do" means that you tried the 5 R's, but that's a good start:
    The 5 R's
    From there, try this:
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes on Windows
    And this...
    iPod won't turn on
    Good luck,

you also need an itunes store account for that particular country. you can't just change the store location and get access to all the content.

  • 1st Gen Shuffle not recognized by Windows XP Pro

I cannot get my 1st gen shuffle to be seen by Windows XP Pro. We have all the updates, the latest version of iTunes. The Shuffle plays, it connects to another computer running Windows XP. I see several messages here that point to different articles. The only thing we haven't done is edit the registry.

Have you tried going through the steps here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
If that doesn't work, sometimes other USB devices plugged in can cause this. You may want to try removing any other USB devices plugged into the CPU (other than the keyboard and mouse).
Also, what version of iTunes are you running? Check that by going along the top of iTunes and choosing Help>About iTunes.

  • 2nd gen shuffle blinks orange 3x then doesnt charge, isnt detected

I have had and used my Ipod Shuffle for a couple months now and I go to plug my Ipod Shuffle into the USB dock and the Ipod light blinks orange three times and nothing happens after that. The Ipod is not detected by my computer or by Itunes. The Ipod does not charge at all. Because the Ipod is not detected by Itunes or anything else for that matter, I can't upload or organize any of my songs on the Ipod. I have tried all of the solutions I can find related to Apple and Ipod. None have worked. I uninstalled Itunes from my computer and then reinstalled it and nothing happened. I want to find the answer to my pesky problem because I don't want to have to buy another MP3 player. Please help me fix this problem. Any ideas or suggestions?

I had the exact problem occur with a 2nd gen shuffle less than 24 hours old. I had just bought my kids each one of these. After loading them both with songs, one of them would no longer be recognized by either of my PC's. When plugged in to the docking station, the light on the ipod would blink orange 3x, and then, nothing. The PC would not play the normal something-was-just-plugged-into-the-USB-port sound. The other shuffle connected fine, using the same USB port and docking station. Strange enough, the ipod that refused to be recognized would still play the music that had already been loaded before the problem started. However, since it was not being recognized by the PC or iTunes, I figured it was not going to take a charge, and would just be a matter of 12-14 hours before the thing was dead for good. I took it back to Best Buy and exchanged it for a new one. This time I purchased the 2-year replacement contract (something I rarely do). Probably a good bet, as a couple of hours later, the sound of the newly-replaced shuffle cuts in and out when the headphone wire is touched. I wonder how many of these cute little guys my kids will go through in the next two years...

  • My iPod is no longer recognized by my computer

Hello, I'll try to explain what is happening.
When I connect my iPod into the computer it's no longer recognized as a drive. It recharges ok, but I simply can't do anything more.
I've tried probably all the articles on Apple site, the only thing I couldn't do is restoring my iPod, because it's not even recognized by the updater.
I know that many other users experienced this problem before, but I couldn't find an answer, so if someone have ANY idea, please post here.
      Windows XP Pro

I have the same problem...but unfortunately I think its the hard drive that failed and I've only had this iPod 3 weeks (bought it used on ebay because I wanted to use accessories that only work on a 4th Gen. pod) Now I'm in the market for a cheap functional 20m GB HDD or an iPod with a different problem, click wheel bad, e.g. [if case you know of one]
Here's what I found, finally, to diagnose the problem (even the Apple store geniuses couldn't decide if the HDD or the control board or both were bad.) I found this on Apple's site.
Even if your computer won't see your iPod, you may be able to run "Diagnostics". On my 4th Gen 20GB, the way you do that is press Menu P/B and Select P/B at the same time for at least 6 secs to reset it, then while the Apple icon is displayed, hold the Back P/B and Select P/B at the same time-you'll know when you're there (again the second part may be diff. if you have a diff. unit-search Diagnostics on Apples support page.) Anyway, there are prompts and the rest is fairly intuitive. If your SCAN works your hard drive is probably OK-lucky you. If you check RAM or 5 in 1 and it comes back bad your control board is probably bad. There are battery checks and several other checks. Good Luck

  • 2nd gen shuffle wouldn't sync - fixed it (for me)

With 2nd gen shuffle, changed computers, downloaded ITunes 9, created new playlists, got all ready... and shuffle won't sync. Would start syncing, then quit after trying a couple songs, then some kind of error - folder not found or something like that. Tried it over and over in different variations. Looked thru google and tried resetting ipod, uninstall/reinstalling itunes (couple times), uninstalled intunes 9 and used itunes 7 (which someone recommended), searched thru apple support and tried things - same problem. Noticed in Explorer that the Ipod wasn't being detected consistently - would show briefly, then disappear so figured there was some problem with the computer recognizing the device, even though IPOD was recognized in ITunes. Went to Apple discussions looking for "recognizing ipod" and found http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369; which I had seen earlier, but blew it off as not relevant because ipod was recognized in ITunes.
For me, appears that I didn't have shuffle connected to a high-power USB port - just plugged it into first one I saw, which wasn't high-power; did change ports earlier, but didn't know I had high-power ones (or needed them) available in another part in the back of computer. Changed ports and it worked - synced up like it used to.
Hope this helps others - I spent 3 days researching internet, trying variety of different things and being PO'ed - and music-less.

I think it was just that itunes was running- but can't disable that.  I ended up just taking about 30 mins to delete each song individually from the shuffle. Hopfully it will work for the kiddo we are giving it too.  Thanks for your suggestion!
