I really liked Tiger (The Missing Manual) I found it very helpful. I want to buy Photoshop Elements 4.0 for Mac. They have a Missing Manual Book for Photoshop elements 4.0 but it doesn't specify anything about Mac. Does that mean it's for Windows only? Will it be helpful to me?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I didn't see any books related to Photoshop Elements that were geared to Mac.

May be slightly simple question from a new Mac user: Why can't I quit safari? I cannot quit it from top menu bar neither to do it from dock? All other apps are working normally.
Or you can actived the right button on your magic mouse and click on they icon in the dock. then you select "stop" and it's out of your dock.

Really embarassing questions from a new Mac user
Okay, I have my new Mac Mini up and running and thought I'd test drive it by creating some simple holiday cards, recipe cards, gift tags, etc.
What application do I use for this? I found text edit, but that doesn't seem to have any graphics or clip art so to speak and I don't want to use photos.
Am I stupid? Or is there really no program for this sort of simple thing?
If I need to purchase additional software, what should I get?
Thanks.I'm not sure which stationaries you're talking about, although it's been a while since I used Microsoft Windows in a production environment. I know that Microsoft Works includes quite a few of them, but while it is bundled with many PCs, it's not part of Windows.
I think iWork features templates for CVs and so forth, and it's supposedly very good for creating stylish documents. FWIW, iWork is usually released at MacWorld San Francisco in January, so you may want to hold off to see if iWork '07 is released (after all, it's just a month away).
Also, while Pages can import and edit MS .doc files, it's not as good as some other applications. NeoOffice, which is based on OpenOffice.org, is free, Intel-native, and has good compatibility with MS Office documents. -
Questions from future New Mac User
I am planning to get a Mac in the following month.
However, I read the reviews about Leopard and got kind of mixed feelings.
Are there really a lot of problems atm? or those problems just simply caused by misuse?
Another question is, is iWork a replacement for Microsoft office (really dont want to touch micrsoft products anymore)?
Thank you for your timeI agree with everything Kappy said, most importantly Macs are great. I have two, a MacBook and an iMac, and have few minor problems on occasion. I can always find a solution though, there's usually a fix. I love iWork, although it does not take the place of Office, it's much more enjoyable. Any document, presentation, or what have you, can be exported in all the popular formats. This includes, Word, PDF, HTML, RTF...Pages, the word document app in iWork is excellent, I write on it exclusively. Keynotes will make the best presentations you could imagine. Numbers, I barely use, it's more for spreadsheets, (work stuff) overall, the experience between the two is beyond comparison. iWork is the better product, and half the price. This is only my opinion, and I write at least 5000 words a day.

I'm a new Mac user. I imported photos from my PC through a jump drive and they ended up in my iphoto library on the hard drive but when I open iphoto from the dock its empty. How do I import those photos to the dock file from the iphoto library?

Hello everyone. As a new Mac user, I would really like to know the easiest way to move my music files from my old PC to my MacBook? Do I move only the files, the entire iTunes and how? I have a lot of music so it is not a solution with iPod/iPhone.

I'm a brand new Mac user. I want to send photos from Iphoto to my local store for printing, like I can do in Picasa. I can't find that option in Iphoto. I do not want to order them through Itunes.
I have not idea how you do it with Picasa but with iPhoto you either export the photos to a desktop folder and upload from there or burns that folder to CD - or from the upload window use the media browser in the lower left hand corner of the upload windows - media ==> photos ==> iPhoto

I'm a new mac user. I just had my 8,000 photos that I managed on my old PC using Elements transferred to new Mac. Now half my photos are completely disorganized and jumbled together out of order in one big Iphoto album, when they used to be arranged in folders by date. I could see this taking hours and hours of reviewing and organizing, picture by picture.
What is the most expedient solution to this problem? I'm open to using Iphoto, Aperture, and perhaps even Lightroom to organize my pics but would like to avoid Elements since I read new organizers stink.
P.S. I would love a 'Sort' function by date to keep them in order, (much more useful to me than categorizing by faces and places), however I can't seem to find a program that offers this, which makes no sense to me.

If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.

It is now confirmed that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
◼ Password protection
◼ Blog and photo comments
◼ Blog search
◼ Hit counter
◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

New Mac user: Is it possible to move more than one file at a time on a Mac?
I'm a new Mac user. Something so simple in Windows doesn't seem possible in Mac OS and AppleCare doesn't have a clue either. I have edited video files as well as the master footage video file in individual folders created by FCP. I need to transfer 6 video files, 20GB each, onto an external hard drive. This will need to run overnight because I'm using an external HD with only USB and it will take 10 hours or so. How do I transfer these 6 files all at once?
Note: The 6 files are in 6 different folders. I can't transfer the entire 6 folders because they contain other video files in them that I don't need to transfer and are larger than my 20 GB edited files. And last, I shouldn't have to drag these files individually to a folder on the desktop first, because that will take an hour and is a waste of time because I would have to sit there and wait for each to finish.As a new Mac user, you might find the following sites helpful:

How do I get my old TM to a new mac user
ok, to keep things short, my old mac user became corrupt using my mobileme and the quickest and easiest way seemed to be that I backed up everything, created a new user and put everything into that.
That was the easy part, I didn't use TM, instead using an external hard drive to drag and drop my personal files i needed and itunes etc etc. I then deleted the old mac user.
I forgot about some photos and after having done everything a week ago and the new mac user working perfectly, I need a photo. When I opened TM the backups from a month are there but greyed out and I can't access them.
what do I need to do for my new mac user to see the old mac users backups ?You might be able to re-create the old user account (exactly the same, of course) and use that account to restore the photos to that account.

I am a new Mac user, converting from the Windows world. How do I easily transfer files from one folder location to another in Finder, like I was used to doing in Windows Explorer?
You can expand Finder into multi-panes, I am not at my Mac right now to get the exact key strokes so don't want to mislead you. Do so many things on auto-pilot that when someone asks I need the machine so I can get the exact things to click on.
But you can get the multi-pane view and drag and drop from pane to pane. -
Brand new Mac user with a brand new Mac problem!

I am a brand new Mac user... I've only had my MacBook Pro 13" for three days. My Mac has been continuously freezing while I use it. When it freezes I only have safari running so I know its not from application "overload". Once frozen, I cannot move the mouse, "esc" or use any commands. Essentially my only option is to force it to shut down by holding the power buttong down. Please let me know if anyone has any idea how to fix this! With school coming up I cannot afford for my computer to be freezing every 20 minutes!

Just be nice and explain that you don't expect a new MBP to function as it is (or malfunction) and let them, at least, run diagnostics on it. As it's so new, there may be something simple that they can fix as you wait. Did your boyfriend already register the machine with Apple or did you? They may take the registration date into account...
But I'd take it to the Apple Store, regardless...
