From Bootcamp 3.0 to 5.0, fresh install or upgrade?

I've been using Bootcamp 3.0 (3.2) for years, mainly for accessing few light native windows application and a bit of old-school gaming. I'm trully interested on upgrading to the newest 5.0 with it's feature and stability, plus ability to install Windows 8, of which I'd really love to try.
Now, can I just simply upgrade from 3.0 or do I need to start fresh for 5.0?
Thanks!

Note that Boot Camp 5 drivers only support 64-bit Windows 7 and 8, and that you need a Mid 2010 27-inch or newer iMac to install them. If not, do not install Windows 8, but you can still upgrade to Boot Camp 4 > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If your Mac supports Boot Camp 5, I recommend you to make a clean installation. Windows usually does not work properly after an upgrade, so it is better to format the Windows partition and install it again.
Follow Apple's steps to download the Boot Camp Support Software and install Windows 8 (if your Mac is compatible) > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf

Since no one yet has SL to determine what options are available you will have to wait until Friday.
But in the most general terms a fresh install is always preferable. You can prepare by doing the following:
    1. Repair your hard drive and permissions.
    2. Make and test a bootable clone to another internal or external drive.
Because you have two Macs you will need to purchase the Family Pack. You cannot install a single-user license on more than one CPU at a time.

  • Fresh Install or Upgrade

    I currently have Windows 2003, IIS6 and CF7 and CF8
successfully running side by side on my development server. CF7 is
loaded in stand alone mode while CF8 is loaded in multi-server
mode. I have 15 CF8 instances running on that server in a
pre-development environment. Next week I will be switching over our
Development side to CF8 and just connecting it to one of the
instances on that server. As it stands right now, we are not
thinking of running multiple instances in our test and production
environments but I was thinking of installing the multiple server
configuration and with just 1 instance just in case someone changes
their mind down the road.. So,
My question is this: What is the best approach to installing
CF8 in those environments, just upgrading or fresh install? Does an
upgrade remove the previous version? If not, do I have to do a
manual uninstall? I have always done fresh installs on major
version changes as I have not wanted any previous version file
hanging around to cause problems. But upgrading seems the painless
way to go especially when it just ports all of your settings,
datasources and k2 verity collections over.
    What is the best practice?

    hi
I recently purchased the latest mountain Lion.
i was wondering what was the best thing to do.
    A complete fresh install
or just upgrading from the previous OSX Lion.
    I have 3 macs :
    - iMac 27" (2009)
    - Mac Mini (2010)
    - MacBook Pro 13" (2011)
The 3 of them came with with Snow Leopard.
And I did an upgrade to Lion, shortly after it was relased.
    If we upgrade :
    - does leave unnecessary files
    - is there a difference in speed and hard-disk space
or does it manage it all very well
    Thanks for the info
maybe some links would be welcome that give an in-depth explanation about that
There is some house-keeping that you need to do before/after upgrading to Mountain Lion.
For installed, third-party applications (and device drivers where indicated), does the vendor offer latest OS X Mountain Lion support. Drivers that worked in Snow Leopard or Lion, may not work well in Mountain Lion without upgrades.
You may have to re-install some third-party applications that have system dependencies that have changed in Mountain Lion.
You may have to update your Printer preferences if printers do not work after the upgrade.
You should count on a minimum of 4GB of memory (8GB is better) in each Mac.
Although the upgrade process will not touch /Users, it is sound due diligence to backup user data on all these Macs beforehand.
Upgrading is simpler, multiple Mountain Lion downloads not withstanding. If these Macs have been through prior OS X updates, they may not operate as fast as a full, clean install would deliver. If you want to do a full, clean install, download the free Lion Diskmaker. It will automatically build a bootable, USB installer for Mountain Lion from your first ML purchase and download. I used it to make a clean install on my SSD. Works perfectly.

  • How to get iPhoto back on a fresh install (not upgrade) of Mavericks?

I have a mid 2010 white unibody Macbook which came with Snow Leopard pre-installed and hence iPhoto. I recently upgraded to an SSD with a fresh install of Mavericks which does not come with iPhoto. As I originally had iPhoto, can I get a (free) copy of it for Mabericks?

Great.  If Time Machine, then enter Time Machine and Restore iPhoto, otherwise, copy Applications/iPhoto to your Mac

  • Macintosh HD disappears from Bootcamp after OS X reinstallation

Recently, my Macbook Pro mid-2011 began to feel sluggish. I decided to do a fresh install of Mountain Lion by creating a Restore HD with a USB stick. I formatted my Macintosh HD drive while I was in Recovery using disk utility, in order to make room for my new OS. I reinstalled Mountain Lion without problem. When it comes time to restore, I chose not too, opting to selectively restore from my Time Machine after I created a profile and logged in. After logging it, I only restored my settings and applications from Time Machine, not my User Profile. After, I selectively moved my music, movies, pictures, documents, and downloads folders back from the Time Machine backup. Everything was going well. However, when I rebooted into Bootcamp (I have Steam running on my Windows 7 64 bit to play games), I noticed that under Hard Disk Drives, my Macintosh HD drive was missing. My Bootcamp disk was there, and so would any external drive that I connected. I thought it was a bug so I reinstalled Bootcamp. Nothing happened. I restarted and uninstalled Bootcamp and tried to reinstall it after restarting. I received a 2753 error. After some web search, I came across a Apple Support Communites discussion suggesting that I deleted a specific file from system32 called AppleOSSMgr.exe (here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3336039?start=0&tstart=0). I did so and my Bootcamp reinstallation proceeded smoothly. I restarted again and to my surprise, my Macintosh HD was still missing. I have enclosed picture of the issue below.
    Higher resolution shot here: http://i.imgur.com/2yqSH.png
I have Paragon NTFS installed but I don't think it is causing this because it never gave me problems before. This is a somewhat annoying issue because I have my iTunes Windows app connected to my music folder on my Mac partition, which no longer exists, therefore I can no longer play any of my music. Does anyone know what is going on?

Open the Terminal application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    sudo chown -R $UID ~/
Press Enter and type in your administrator password to correct the ownership. This issue may happen if a recreated user account has a numeric UID different from the UID assigned to the original account with that home folder location and the old account was deleted using a method other than the one provided by the Accounts pane of System Preferences, which moves the previous home folder to Deleted Users.

  • Access Mac Drive from BootCamp in Snow Leopard

I have Windows installed in BootCamp from a fresh Snow Leopard install.
I have two accounts on the Mac side: An Admin level account and a normal user account.
From BootCamp in Windows Explorer, I can access the user files for the admin account, but not for the normal user account. All I see there is:
    \Macintosh HD\Users\chrishaaker\chrishaaker.sparsebundle
I have no idea what that is ...
Is there something I need to enable on the Mac side of the house to grant access to that normal user's directories? I havent fooled with either - they are at the defaults permissions-wise.

You need to turn off FileVault for that user account.

  • Blue screen of death after fresh install of Win7 onto bootcamp!

    So I am currently running:
I had this problem when I installed windows on bootcamp before but was told there was a driver error or it was a bad install on the windows. So I did a fresh install deleted the partition. I re-installed Windows 7 again with a different disk just to be safe. I am getting the exact same problem after I install all the drivers from the Bootcamp driver download. I feel like the problem could be related with the drivers being downloaded from the bootcamp software thats pre-installed on the mac. Any thoughts, any help?!
    Thanks,
    Ryan

, Hello and thanks for posting on the HP support forums.  The first thing you will want to check is if there are any issues with the hard drive you put in.  Run the BIOS diagnostics for the hard drive and the hard ware to make sure there are no issues. HP Notebook PCs - System Diagnostics (F2) And. HP Notebook PCs - Testing a Hard Disk from the BIOS Please let me know how things go. Thanks again for posting and have a great day.

Can you restore that JSON backup in a new profile?
Did you make sure that it is really a JSON backup and that there is no missing or hidden other file extension?
A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded"
    A HTML backup starts with: <!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>
You can try if you can restore that JSON backup in a new profile.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems
See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
Please for administration of this support site, make possibility to quote someone's answer, on this way is dificult to answer somebody who wrote some suggestion!
No, i can't restore JSON backup in new profile, even on fresh installed OS XP SP3, with fresh installation of latest version of firefox!
MAN I TOLD YOU 10X IT'S 200 % JSON BACKUP FILE!!! I'M NOT IN IT FROM YESTERDAY, I WORK IN IT 12 YEARS!!!
I tried restoring json backup in new profile, but nothing, i couldn't restore, cause that stupid error from screen shot which i posted again appears !
Man i'm not totally noob i repeat 2nd time here, and normally that i know to create new profile, and that i tried that, but that didn't help!
I can't believe that FIREFOX has not good support team, and doesn't care for yours users, this will not give me more reason to use in future firefox
like borwser, if i don't have good support, and when i have problem like this, to loose all my very important bookmarks and passwords on them, and
firefox support won't to help me to solve my problem!
If somebody from firefox support team read this, i can give you Remote desktop access to my computer to try solve this problem, like other serious company
like HP, Dell , etc. give remote desktop support to their users!
Corel are you from firefox support team? Please don't write same suggestions, cause i know to read, and i understand well if you write once some suggestion!

  • How can I install audio driver from BootCamp into Windows 7?

After an uneventful installation of Window 7 (64) onto iMac  cor 2duo OS X 10.6.7.
    NO SOUND.
I have tried to replace the Audio Driver HD through Device Manager: it is not working
      a) if I disable the Windows Driver and try to install the Cirrus driver from the BootCamp disc, I am informed that "device already has the optimal driver"
      b) if I unistall the WIndows driver, Sound Video Game Controller disappears from Device Manager-so there is no place through which I can install a new driver.
    c) If I start from the BootCamp/Driver folder and select Cirrus and Install, I am again getting the answer that the "device already has the optimal driver"
I am frustrated! Please, can you advise how to proceed?

You do NOT want to disable unless you are not going to use a device.
You want to rollback or uninstall and get Cirrus driver.
Try Boot Camp (Setup) repair-reinstall - to enable the device.

  • HELP! How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?

    Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?
Any solutions are very much apreciated!
    Thanks!
I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.
    http://www.twocanoes.com/
Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.
    http://www.paragon-software.com/downloads/demo.html
I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

  • Fresh Install of Mountain Lion how do I export users from Lion Server

I've been having some issues with Lion Server, mainly Kerberos related and Profile Manager. So I want to start fresh with Mountain Lion.
I've installed ML and Server, and profile manager is working now for the first time (yay!)
Now I want to Import all my existing Open Directory users from Lion, I don't want to Import the entire OD though because I think some of my kerberos issues will just get carried over to ML.
I would like to just export the Users to a file then use ML server to import users from file, but I can't see an option to export in Lion Server, I have tried doing it from WGM on Lion but the 'users' file is not recognised by ML server

Great thanks for the reply, I'll try it tonight when everyone has logged off.
Yeah I was very pleased initially with kerberos on Lion, it worked great to start with, now I'm just getting expired tickets for a default realm when some users log in, yet other users continue to work fine.
I was planning to slowly install Mountain Lion Server and test is thouroghly but I've had a bit of a disaster that if forcing me to go live with ML server quicker than I wanted to!
Basically because on Lion Server I have all the Service Data on a separate drive, and I upgraded to ML server on a backup copy of Lion Server just to see what it was like, though now I've rebooted the original Lion drive but half of the services are now screwwed up because the ML Server must have changed them, so things like Wiki Server and Profile Manager are now broken from the Lion Server boot, they just show "Error Reading Settings"
I realise now I should have moved the Service data back to the local drive before doing a test upgrade so I wouldn't have messed it up! but now it seems like my best way forward is a fresh install of ML Server

  • I did a erase hd from start up utilities option, and now disk utilities doesnt come up at start up so i cant do a fresh install

well where to start, after hours of thought i decided it would be a good idea to format/erase my harddrive so i could do a fresh install of os x, after reading up briefly i was lead to believe the best way to do this would be through disk utilities, i restarted my mac mini what was running maverick, and got myself into the disk utilities startup menu i then proceeded to format/erase my hd and rename it, from what i can tell it was all done correctly, osx format journal option ect.. i restarted the mac and then had the utilities options open i was looking for something to suggest to boot from usb\ external source as my copy of osx is on a drive. i worked it out that i had to do another restart and use command c to boot from the drive, but when i restarted the mac all that came up was internet recovery.. i have completely lost the option to use disk utilities somehow, i have tried to do the internet recovery twice and have managed to get to the end and the computer restarts the apple logo shows and then all of a sudden i get the grey flashing folder.. i really have run out of ideas of what has gone wrong spent hours trying to find out what could of happened to disk utilities option as it isnt even a option anymore upon start up and im going to be lost without my mac if i cant get it sorted soon as i use it for music production,
thanks for any help in advance

Well you should run the internet restore, as obviously it already has erased the drive.
