From Comcast to FIOS with speed test documentary

Below is a link to a Youtube video made by me recently. It is a documentary of switching from Comcast to Verizon FIOS in the month of August 2011. It included installation details and speed tests.
Comcast speed test was done on a 25 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up.
FIOS speed test was done on a 35 Mbps down and 35 Mbps up.

  • What is your fastest BT Wholesale Speed Test resul...

    Hi,
Aplogies to the CL's if this is not the right forum but it definitely is speed related related.  I tossed up where to post it but decided on here fuguring you will soon move it if you want to.
As the title suggests, and for a bit of fun, what is the fastest result you have got from the new BT Wholesale Speed Test ?
I'll kick off with this :-
    Best regards,
    dfenceman

    Hi Keith,
I typed a long response but have lost it now ???
Right, I'll type it all again.  You are right I am on ADSL as is the whole village.  This result was obtained from the village school.
As you know, every speed test I have run on the "new" speed tester has returned a download speed in excess of my IP Profile and at times in excess of my downstream speed.
Under the County Councils cost saving, performance enhancing project the school has just had its wireless link replaced with 16 bonded copper pairs.  This was projected to provide the school with 8Mbps, 2Mbps below all the other 250 odd in the county.  I therefore asked the school to run a speed test to find out what it is actually getting and this was the result.
I thought it would provide a little light relief from what can be a very serious forum.
As I said in my OP I was unsure where to post it but I never expected you to move it ti Infinity, I thought it might be The Lounge.  Neith of these are visited so frequently as the Speed/connection forum though.
    Best regards,
    dfenceman

  • Why difference between DSL speed tests?

I have the basic High Speed DSL account that Verizon is representing as being capable of .5 - 1 mbps.  But I've never gotten anything more than 120 kbps download and 35 kbps upload speeds in 'real world' file transfer tests.
However all the online speed test websites I've used, as well as the one the Verizon repair technician used when he came out here, return results from 750 kbps - 1 Mbps down, and 275 kbps - 400 kbps up.
I've done my own download speed tests on 3 different PCs via FTP, Bittorrent, and HTTP protocals, and none ever get more than 120 kbps down.  Firewalls can limit transfer rates, but I've shut them all down, and still only get a max of 120 knps down.
Can anyone explain why there's such a disparity between the speed test results from all these various Inet speed test websites, and my actual real world transfer rates?
    Thx
    ritz

As an FYI, we used to use a factor of 10 going from bytes to bits rather than a factor of 8. Start bits, stop bits, parity, etc.  I suppose it means less with large frames, but there is still some overhead.

Find a faster WiFi connection, because the one you're on now is slowwwwwww....

  • Speed testing proceed with caution??

I've been fascinated by the various reports of variable speeds being seen on  various different speed testing sites, so I've been having a play, and the results have been, shall we say, interesting.
Let's start at the top. No matter which machine I access it from, http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ shows me 56megs down and 12.89 up, with a max achievable of 60.1/20.
Namesco's  ( http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ ) shows 33623/14734 on my "work" partition, but if I reboot into another partition which is set up for webcasting, it, too reports the full 56megs down and 14/15 up. Same connection, same wires, barely five minutes apart on Mac OS X 10.7.3 in both partitions.
If I then, boot back into the work partition, and bring up Speedtest.net not only on there, but also on a couple of other machines, and set them all to check simultaneously, the combined total of the download speeds is - guess... yup, 56megs down and around 14 up.
Aside from quite fancying my connection giving me that full 20megs up (OK, I know, it'll be 19 or so), I'm really quite happy with this - and it does point out that, in all likelihood, severely fluctuating speed tests may not necessarily be line-related. If I wasn't able to reproduce all of this more or less at will, I may have thought differently, but it's an entirely repeatable excercise.

Yes indeed, none of the speedtests are reliably accurate all the time as their servers and routes to the server are subject to varying conditions. Speedtest.net is very dependent on which server you select, as their automatic server selection chooses based on ping results, which does not always give you a server with the fastest data rates (my results vary from 35 to 70Mbps, or as low as 2Mbps if you go out as far as New Zealand ). BT's main http://speedtester.bt.com/ (diagnostics) is up the pole for most of the day and is only any use for finding out your profile. However, their beta test is pretty good and is always worth trying: http://speedtester.bt.com/beta/speedtest-remote.jsp
BBMax is often said to be the best one but that could just be because it uses a much smaller download file and the test lasts for a shorter period of time. That means there is less scope for varying line and server conditions to intervene, and for Internet Security programs to slow things down.
    So what I do is:
    a) Turn off my Internet Security program (this can be very important)
    b) find the fastest speedtest.net server and use that result
    c) use BT beta speedtest (as I already know my profile)
    d) check BBMax
The results of these three methods are nearly always between 69.x Mbps and 71.x Mbps, my profile is 72.8 Mbps. I don't think you'll ever get your 19Mbps upload by the way as I am on a 20Mbps cap but the fastest upload speed I've seen is 16.x binary Mbps and 17.x decimal Mbps.

  • I need to count intermittent high speed pulses from an outside source with cFP-CTR-502 and labview.

I need to count intermittent high speed pulses from an outside source with cFP-CTR-502 and Labview 8.2 . I've found example code for generating pulses and creating intricate count setups but no straightforward examples of a simple counter. Any suggestions?

    Hello tinfish,
I could not find a simple example that implements simple counting either, but it should be straightforward enough for us to try. Do you have the CTR module configured properly in MAX? If so, can you monitor the channels on your CTR 502 for input? Try connecting a square wave or some other digital pulse to the terminal to test the functionality of the counter module first (before programming). If you monitor the input channels with somethign connected you should see the count increment each time it sees a rising edge (assuming default configuration).
Once you've verified that everything works in MAX, you can set up your CTR module in a LV 8.2 project. If you need help with this, refer to the help document (look in the "Configuring FieldPoint in LabVIEW" section):
    C:\Program Files\National Instruments\FieldPoint\documentation\Online Help\fplv.chm
You should be able to just read a channel tag from your CTR 502 using an FP Read VI. (Simply drag the channel from your project onto the block diagram). Since counting is the default behavior of the 502, there is no special programming involved to make it work.
I hope this helps -- if it's too high-level we can talk details about specific questions you have.  Have a good one!

  • How to get an answer about internet speed from Comcast?

My internet connection is very slow and unstable. I tried the support "chat" and was connected to "Isaiah" at 9:43 am. He sent three pings "to ensure the stability of the modem" and then said "Oh! It appears that your internet is not really stable. To fix this, I will have to send a special signal to your modem."
After that, there was no internet connection. No "automatically reconnected."
After ten minutes with no internet connection, I telephoned the Comcast service phone number. Once I was able to connect with a representative, she tried to tell me that the equipment Comcast installed was somehow something I had put in. I explained several times all the equipment we have was installed by Comcast.
She sent another "signal" and was able to restart my internet service. Then she had me do a speed test and agreed that it was slow. Then she decided that I was using the wrong browser, had me use a different browser, and the results were even slower. Then she tried to sell me something, her English was poor so I'm not sure what she was selling. Then she transferred me to a man in Technical Services who assured me that "I was in touch with the right person" and asked for our phone number. After giving it to him the phone call was cut off! It is now 11 am and I have been trying to communicate with comcast for hours. And now I have to start over!!! What else can I do???

Has your speed problem been resolved, or do you need assistance?

  • Blast speed is currently 2 Mbps/9 Mbps on the Comcast Speed Test. Help please!

I've had the Blast service for quite some time, and have noticed painfully slow internet browsing for the last couple of months. I mean...pull-my-hair-out-slow.  I just did a Comcast speed test and the results were 2.31 Mpbs and 9.01 Mpbs. Um....that would explain things. But not really... as I'd love to see the speeds I'm supposed to have. Even double digits would be nice! I'm trying to run ShaperProbe but I get the error "Servers are busy. Try again later." I've tried a few times. I'll post the results if I can get the scan to work. Power level is 45-46 dBmV and SNR 35-37 Modem: ARRIS Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0Logs of June 2015 (the most recent, and the logs before that are January): Jun 22 2015 07:07:243-CriticalT05.0SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Loss of Sync;CM-MAC=b8:16:19:fa:b8:0c;CMTS-MAC=00:1d:70:af:fd:a0;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jun 18 2015 08:04:503-CriticalR02.0No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=b8:16:19:fa:b8:0c;CMTS-MAC=00:1d:70:af:fd:a0;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jun 18 2015 07:08:273-CriticalT05.0SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Loss of Sync;CM-MAC=b8:16:19:fa:b8:0c;CMTS-MAC=00:1d:70:af:fd:a0;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jun 17 2015 23:08:553-CriticalR02.0No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=b8:16:19:fa:b8:0c;CMTS-MAC=00:1d:70:af:fd:a0;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jun 16 2015 02:43:065-WarningZ00.0MIMO Event MIMO: Stored MIMO=-1 post cfg file MIMO=-1;CM-MAC=b8:16:19:fa:b8:0c;CMTS-MAC=00:1d:70:af:fd:a0;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0; I would sure appreciate any ideas. I have not contacted tech support yet, although that may be faster??  We'll see.  Thanks in advance for any help!

ShaperProbe has not been usable for some time, unfortunately. Check to see if Comcast is reporting an outage for your area by logging in to https://customer.xfinity.com/Secure/MyServices/ or by checking the voice response system at 1-800-Comcast.
If no outage is reported, see Connection Troubleshooting Tips. If you want to troubleshoot this yourself and still need help, please provide Information Requested for Connection-Related Posts.
If you are using Wifi it's best to switch to an Ethernet connection if possible while measuring speed and checking the reliability of your connection to Comcast.
If you'd rather have them do the troubleshooting call them at the phone number on your bill or 1-800-Comcast and have them send a tech out to identify the cause and correct it.
If the tech finds bad coax, splitters, amplifiers, or connections in your home (even if Comcast originally supplied them) you'll probably have to pay for the visit unless you have their Service Protection Plan (http://www.xfinity.com/spp/, about $5/mo). If the trouble is due to a faulty Comcast modem, eMTA, gateway device, or anything outside your home, you shouldn't be charged.

  • I am wondering if the data from data speed test apps affects my overall usage from my plan

Yesterday as we were coming home on the highway, i decided to test the connection speed using an app from the google play store. I downloaded it because I had about 11MB or so used that day and decided to use my data. Once it finished downloading and installed I opened it and begun a test. It gave me a 15mb download and 2mb upload result so I did one more test. As I was doing the second test I get an alert about my data limit I set up for the day to pace out the 2GB I have for the month. I went to check my apps and saw I used about 40-50MB since using the data speed test app. Do these tests count against my actual plan?

Yes speed tests count against your cap if as Ann says you;re using them to test you mobile data. I think this where I see people complaining about their caps being exceeded but claim they don't do anything. People don't realize that speed tests are going to use 50 MB and even up to 80 MB of data. You do just 1 speed test in a day and you will use 1.5 GB to 2.5 GB a month. And some people feel the need to do 3, 5, 10 tests a day.

  • Is Version 6 compatible with Norton Security Suite from Comcast?

I have had previous compatibility problems using the Norton Security Suite from Comcast after installing a new version of Firefox. Are there any known issues with Version 6? I'd like to know before I install the new version. I have a PC running XT.

Only if the Comcast "deal" with Norton is directing you to the download or updating you to the newest Norton version. The Norton toolbar that gets installed into Firefox was made compatible with Firefox 6 on the day that Firefox 6 was released.

  • FIOS 150/150 but only showing 95/95 on Verizon Speed Test

Some context - have been on the 150 plan for about 6 months since dumping TV and Phone Service. I originally had the Quantum gateway router but was dissatisfied with the wireless coverage.Purchased a Netgear R7000 about 5 months ago and used it as an Access Point with the Quantum Gateway as the Router. Getting 150 up and down no problem.Switched out the Quantum router and used the Netgear R7000 as my only router and access point about 4 months ago. Was still getting 150 up and down. Returned the Quantum gateway to Verizon. At the beginning of this week, started upgrading some of the family PCs to Windows 10. After upgrade, realised that the Internet was slow. Measured using Verizon Speed Test, all of the PCs were showing 95/95 consistently. Tried it with my Macbook pro and was the same so not a Windows 10 issue. Rebooted router, no difference. Reset router to factory settings - no difference. Updated router firmware - no difference. Got in touch with Verizon support - they tested the connection, reset it and confirmed that I am still provisioned for 150/150.. Ordered a new Quantum Gateway to check that there is not a router issue (dubious on this) and will try it when it arrives. Has anyone had a similar experience or can anyone offer advice on troubleshooting this?

This is just a shot in the dark but when you were running the speed test(s) on your Mac, did you have any Windows 10 machines shut down? If not, and if you haven't disabled Windows 10's default bandwidth sharing setting, you might be experiencing bandwidth usage as explained in this article: http://www.computerworld.com/article/2955288/microsoft-windows/windows-10-commandeers-users-upload-bandwidth.html

  • Anyone having trouble conisistenly downloading email from comcast server with IOS 5?

    Hello David,
Please follow the steps provided here to properly configure your iPhone.  This is a quide from another user.  I you follow this exactly, the Comcast e-mail account will verify properly, and you will be able to send and receive all of your e-mail without having to create a Gmail account, as previously discussed.  You can ignore their comment.

  • Windows 10 compatibility with and norton seccurity suite from comcast

I attempted to install Comcast's Norton Security Suite on a Windows 10 machine and while it installed in later gave me a installation error.  Is it compatible?

      Hello U.S.A.F.
As an experiment I have installed Comcast Norton on a Windows 10 10240 system.
Previously with the Comcast Norton installed I had issues with the Sonar feature apparently, Norton would take out various system files and there were some suspicious cloud problems as well. While alot of the windows files taken out were restorable through the quarentined feature of Norton some were NOT able to be restored due to those system files being in the win sxs  files. Looks like those files there once taken out (deleted) cannot be restored again UNLESS you do a system restore. I also tried the Norton Insight where I had 'Trusted all files' -after doing a malwarebytes scan and a defender scan beforehand.
Because of the above issues I had uninstalled Norton BUT saved my password and settings because I tried to do alot to make Norton work with Win 10 and it almost worked but not quite. In case I installed again I did not want to repeat what I had done already.
But that was a while ago and I have just installed Norton Security Suite from Comcast yesterday (again)
So, if you want to try the current Norton Comcast version with windows 10, I suggest you create a system restore point before installing Norton and also a regisrty backup-just in case.
So far, after almost a day I have not have any issues at all with Norton Comcast -yet. But if something happens so be it I do the system restore.
Lets hope Norton comes out soon with the so called windows 10 compatible version for Comcast soon.
       EG
