From DVD to FCP

Hey guys,  I saw a post for this but it was older and wanted to know if it is still accurate.  I am taking DVDs to edit in FCP.  I am using mpegstreamclip but what is/are the best setting(s) to export?  Thanks

Because I'm a forum addict...
DV50 is my preferred....but DV/NTSC also works. And many people recommend ProRes NTSC.

The audio_TS folder is normally blank.
You need to use MPEG Streamclip to get the DVD files to Quicktime.

  • Getting material from dvd in fcp

    Hi!
I don´t know how to get material (I suppose digibeta from TV) in fcp. I only get Video and Audio seperated! Will the quality of the material be better, if I get the original digibeta material?
    Help!
    Mel

I'm not sure what your situation is there, Melanie. Is the material encoded onto a viewable DVD? Or a QuickTime stored on it as a DVDROM? If encoded as a DVD, then yes, you would be far better off getting the original source tapes. If the QuickTimes are stored on a DVDROM, be sure to drag them to your media HD before using them, they won't playback fast enough from the DVD.

  • Ripping video from DVDs for FCP

I want to create an assignment for students (I teach a very basic video editing ocurse) where students will rip some video from various commercially available DVDs to practice editing their own trailers together with scenes from the movies. In the educational environment it is legal to rip short clips of video from DVDs.
I think I'm going to use MPEG Streamclip for doing this
    1. Does anyone have any tips for preparing ripped footage to make sure it looks good in a FCP sequence? Is there anything you should do with the footage in FCP to make it look good?
    Thanks.

David is right. MPEG Streamclip will not rip commercial DVDs.
It may well be legal in education to rip discs, however discussion of the process is not permitted here.
Once you have that aspect sorted out...
I have a tutorial for MPEG Streamclip here: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739

  • Import Clips From DVD into FCP

I am working on a 50th anniversary project for a client. They want to include several "home movie" clips in the project. They provided the home video footage to me on DVD. I am looking for the best way to import the material on the DVD into FCP.
I have used Handbrake to capture the video from the DVD and the file is saved in an MP4 format. But when I try to import that file into my FCP bin, FCP tells me that it does not recognize the file format.
I think that I can connect a DVD player to my system by running the signal from the DVD player into my DV cam, and then into my MAC, so that is a possibility.
I am just wondering if I am overlooking something that is quicker or easier.
Again my goal is to import material from a DVD into FCP so I can use clips on my timelines.
    Any hint, tips, advice?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Ripped audio from DVD to FCP

Once I've used a ripping program like Mac the Ripper to get video and audio files from DVD, how do I get the audio only onto a cd?

    Geez David.
I kinda noted that. The question is where are the original unencoded audio sources? Is this music? Or someone talking? If it is music, use the the sources if they are not copyrighted.
You don't need "Mac the Ripper" to extract unencrypted or non copyrighted DVDs.
We get so many requests here about extracting VOBs from DVDs.
Given the terms of use, and laws about extracting from commercial DVDs, many of us are suspicious when a "client" brings in an encoded DVD and wants it "reauthored" for his reel.
Now this isn't you, but when I say get the original source of audio, then I wonder why it isn't available.
Or why didn't the DVD simply contain aiff audio files as a data DVD
    take care

  • Editing footage from DVD in FCP

    Forum,
Here's my issue. A client has a 2 hour presentation on DVD, which they want to edit down to a 90 minute piece. This shorter piece will end up being on a looping DVD. The footage on the original DVD is 16x9 and they want to keep it that way for use on large widescreen monitors. What is the easiest way to get the footage into FCP? The clips to capture will be long, about 30 minutes, do I capture it playing from a DVD player? Do I use a "DVD Ripper"? I have no experience using that type of software.
    Help is appreciated.

MPEG Streamclip is what you need to convert the client's DVD to an editable format. The problem is that the video on DVDs is very highly compressed. If you take it, edit it and then recompress it back to a DVD there will be a noticeable loss in quality. Talk to your client and get an uncompressed version of their video (not a DVD).

  • Extracting from DVD to FCP

    Greetings,
I need to extract a 30 sec commercial from a DVD to edit it in FCP and then add subtitles to it in DVD SP and burn it to DVD again.
My question is, for a 30 second commercial that is 720x480 NTSCP, what are the best settings fo extracting the video? Which one would give the best quality?
I notice that I can copy the .vob by opening the DVD on the finder and import it to FCP. Is this the best way to do this? Or should I use something like MacTheripper or Handrake instead?
Lasly, after I edit it in FCP, what is the best setting get it to DVD SP at the best quality?
    Many Thanks in advance!

I would still use Mpeg Streamclip to convert it before you edit it. the reason being that the VOB file you bring in is going to be an Mpeg2 video file and that is a GOP structure (group of pictures) so you will be making an mpeg of an mpeg. Not ideal. Best be is, especially if it is only 30 sec, to convert to a Quicktime movie in Streamclip (free download by the way) and then add what you need to add. Then, export to compressor, use any of the DVD best quality settings, then go into the quality tab of the inpector in Compressor (make sure you have the setting highlighted in the batch window) and bring the quality setting up as high as it will go. I think you can only get VBR to 7.7 average and 9 or so best.
then add the audio portion and the new mpeg2 into studio pro and you're done.

  • How to import audio/video from DVD into FCP

Hi, I need to import/capture into FCP from a dvd. When dvd files are open on my Mac it show VOB fotmat for video. I imported those files but they don't have audio, also the total time is 20 minutes but when imported into FCP it shows only bout 25 seconds. can someone help on this matter?
    Thanks in advance

Cinematize works great. You can select portions or the entire DVD. It will not read encrypted DVD's so assuming you are using media that you have rights to it will do fine.
You can import in several compressions. If you like you can import only the audio, only the video, etc. It will give you a QT file at the end.

  • Importing from DVD into FCP

I need to edit using material on a dvd in VIDEO_TS format. Is there someway to import it directly from Final Cut Pro or do I use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip or something else? Can you spell out for me what I need to do as I'm not a techie.
Also I have 2x DVD-R 's which when I put into my computer's DVD tray it reads as empty discs, yet they both play fine on my TV's DVD player. What's the solution.

  • From DVD-Video to FCP

I'm trying to get uncopyrighted video from DVD to Final Cut. I've found some ways to do it, but they seem a little sloppy and I want to make sure I convert things the best way.
I've used "MPEG Streamclip" with some success - but the audio always needs rendering in FCP. I was exporting as DV and resampling audio to 48k. It created files with ".dv" extensions - I'm not familiar with that. Should I export as Quicktime files?
I've also tried dragging the VOB files onto the computer, then encoding with Compressor. I can't get the audio to show up at all this way.
    Help?

Your actually doing the right way, as far as having a file that will be editable in FCP. There are other shareware softwares that convert DVD content to DV format, that are bound for FCP editing.
Anyway you do it, your going to loose quality due to the source content on the DVD already being compressed. That being said, let's address your audio. Your audio content must be 48Khz to be compatible with FCP and in AIFF format, or it will require rendering.
Being that the source video/audio is coming from a DVD and I just want to get the source converted with a fairly clear codec, I use the shareware Visual Hub, it does both the video/audio conversion in one shot, without allot of hassle.
If you want to do the conversion, using the current software you have like MpegStream Clip, (which does a very good job by the way) then you will have to deal with the audio by rendering it in FCP or converting it in Quicktime Pro to 48Khz AIFF, prior to bringing it into FCP.
If you convert to DV, and the audio is not 48Khz, FCP will render it.

  • Why is MP4 (MPEG4) Compression direct from FCP (vs from DVD) lower quality?

I am creating video podcasts and I have been fighting this issue for a couple weeks.
When I compress using mpeg4 directly from QuickTime I get unacceptable pixilation surrounding the subjects but when compress the same file from DVD using handbrake or iSquint it looks just fine. I am using the same settings.
Creating a DVD for each compression is silly work around. Does anybody have any advice here?
Note: when I compress using h.264 from FCP it looks fine, however I have decided against the h.264 codec at this time due to the processing toll it puts on the end user that can cause jumpy playback.
    Power Book G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   FCP 4.5

I would rather use mp4 than h.264 and I have seen videos (eg. tikibartv) that look great with the mp4 codec.
Does anybody have any advice here?
I take it you've tried a workflow which emulates the site you referenced, such as...
File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion
In the Format drop-down, select MPEG-4
Click on the Options... button and...
    Alter Image Size to 320x240.
Change the Data Rate to 500
    Set Frame Rate to 15
Alter the Key Frame property to 75
    Click OK
After you've selected the right destination folder, go ahead and press Save.
This will produce a .mp4 file. If you want to make this a .mov file, change the extension in the Browser.
...and that hasn't given you the results you're looking for?

  • Importing from a DVD to FCP

Having lost my original FCP files for my film I'm wanting to import two preview DVDs into FCP and cut them together. I know this is very back to front! but is this possible? If not is there another way to import DVDs and then splice them together. Thanks for any help with this.
    Helen

I've had mixed results w/ MPEG StreamClip.
If you have a PC w/ a DVD Player... Sony Vegas will import a Non-Copyrighted DVD directly from the Disc. -I guess it's because Sony makes those DVD Camcorders. The option is under IMPORT. Then you select the DVD. (FCP also needs this option)
You can then Edit, Trim, or whatever you'd like to do, then export a QT (or whatever format you need) ****, Vegas is so easy to use you can probably just Cut & Export your piece from there.
Sony has a Fully Functional 30 Day Trial on their site.

  • Can't add more than 1 file at a time to library from DVD... any ideas???

Have Mac and PC but on the PC side I'm unable to add multiple files (MPEG 4's) to the library from DVD. iTunes WILL always add the first tune that I have selected to the library but it disregards the other selections I've made. In other words... it only will add one tune at a time no matter how many I select.
I've tried copying them to HD and still the same problem. I've tried puttin them into a folder and adding the folder but still same problem.
I burned the originals MPEG 4's as data unto the DVD but I don't think that would effect things.
Any suggestions would be G-R-E-A-T-L-Y appreciated.
    Thanks!

That is a bug in FCP 6 and 6.0.1...to fix it you need to upgrade to FCP 6.0.2.
