From DVD-Video to FCP

I'm trying to get uncopyrighted video from DVD to Final Cut. I've found some ways to do it, but they seem a little sloppy and I want to make sure I convert things the best way.
I've used "MPEG Streamclip" with some success - but the audio always needs rendering in FCP. I was exporting as DV and resampling audio to 48k. It created files with ".dv" extensions - I'm not familiar with that. Should I export as Quicktime files?
I've also tried dragging the VOB files onto the computer, then encoding with Compressor. I can't get the audio to show up at all this way.
Help?

Your actually doing the right way, as far as having a file that will be editable in FCP. There are other shareware softwares that convert DVD content to DV format, that are bound for FCP editing.
Anyway you do it, your going to loose quality due to the source content on the DVD already being compressed. That being said, let's address your audio. Your audio content must be 48Khz to be compatible with FCP and in AIFF format, or it will require rendering.
Being that the source video/audio is coming from a DVD and I just want to get the source converted with a fairly clear codec, I use the shareware Visual Hub, it does both the video/audio conversion in one shot, without allot of hassle.
If you want to do the conversion, using the current software you have like MpegStream Clip, (which does a very good job by the way) then you will have to deal with the audio by rendering it in FCP or converting it in Quicktime Pro to 48Khz AIFF, prior to bringing it into FCP.
If you convert to DV, and the audio is not 48Khz, FCP will render it.

  • Recording Audio from DVD Video

    Hi,
I have a music concert video on DVD. I would like to record a song off the video so that I can learn to play the guitar part. Is there any software out there that will separate the audio from the video, or in other words, capture the audio and maybe convert it to mp3 format so that I can play it in iTunes without playing the video?
    Sincerely,
    Jim

Audio Hijack will let you capture audio from any running Mac Os X application.

  • Subtitles-.stl from dvd sp to fcp... how?

I want to get one clip from 1 hour video. I need it with subtitles as quicktime. How can I get video with subtitle from DVDSP save as quicktime? and how can I get .stl file into FCP?

I suggest that you create 15-second silent audio slug that you can use to move the audio the same amount you have moved the video.

  • DVD video/audio rip to FCP but skipped frames, why?

    Dear Pros.
I am having an issue with frame and audio skipping on me through out the clips that I ripped from DVD video. DVD video is created by Panasonic DMR-6070. It is an educational lecture that we create at the university. We use DMR-6070 to master the video. DMR-6070 creates MPEG2 video in 325x480. I am able to rip the video using MPEG Streamclip as 720x480 QuickTime DV/DVCPRO NTSC video/audio with 29.97 FPS.
When I bring the DVD ripped footage to FCP and start to edit, I noticed that every10 seconds or so, video and audio skips. I don’t know why it is doing this. The original DVD video does not have this issue. When I tried to export from DVD, I specified to 29.97 FPS. FCP is set to edit with DVD/NTSC settings with 29.97 FPS. The video should come into FCP without any hitch. But I am stuck…
Also I shot the same footage with DV cam in different angle. I am trying to edit two footages using Multiefootage edit mode. The footages were cued up by IN point. However, videos start to become out of synch after 2 min. of footages past. So I am assuming that some issues with dropped frames.
How do you work with DVD video and bring the footages into FCP? Do you see any dropped frames? Can you Multifootage edit with a mix of video sources?
    Thank you in advance.

There is something very strange about the size of the MPEG2 files you say the recorder produces; the file size you quote is MPEG1 video not MPEG 2. this is the start of your problems I would think. I have a number of Panasonic recorders and they all produce 720x540 in standard mode PAL
I trust you are NOT using the Extended Play mode on the recorder, the 6hr setting?. This will really muck things up if you are.
I get excellent results from video recorded on the Panasonics, taking account there is a quality drop by converting from DVD.
I convert to DVD to Quicktime using DVDxDV, edit in FCP then output to DVD again and never have problems.
Try a test using the free DVDxDV tryout application and see what results you get.
As to dropped frames in editing the DV cam I assume you have the basic configuration for using FCP:
    - you are capturing to external media drives, not the system drive
    - have the correct version of QuickTime for the version of FCP and the OS you have
    - you have the same AV settings for both sets of footage you are trying to edit on the timeline - FCP will not edit different setups in the same timeline

  • Ripping video from DVDs for FCP

I want to create an assignment for students (I teach a very basic video editing ocurse) where students will rip some video from various commercially available DVDs to practice editing their own trailers together with scenes from the movies. In the educational environment it is legal to rip short clips of video from DVDs.
I think I'm going to use MPEG Streamclip for doing this
    1. Does anyone have any tips for preparing ripped footage to make sure it looks good in a FCP sequence? Is there anything you should do with the footage in FCP to make it look good?
    Thanks.

David is right. MPEG Streamclip will not rip commercial DVDs.
It may well be legal in education to rip discs, however discussion of the process is not permitted here.
Once you have that aspect sorted out...
I have a tutorial for MPEG Streamclip here: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739

  • Why is MP4 (MPEG4) Compression direct from FCP (vs from DVD) lower quality?

I am creating video podcasts and I have been fighting this issue for a couple weeks.
When I compress using mpeg4 directly from QuickTime I get unacceptable pixilation surrounding the subjects but when compress the same file from DVD using handbrake or iSquint it looks just fine. I am using the same settings.
Creating a DVD for each compression is silly work around. Does anybody have any advice here?
Note: when I compress using h.264 from FCP it looks fine, however I have decided against the h.264 codec at this time due to the processing toll it puts on the end user that can cause jumpy playback.
    Power Book G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   FCP 4.5

I would rather use mp4 than h.264 and I have seen videos (eg. tikibartv) that look great with the mp4 codec.
Does anybody have any advice here?
I take it you've tried a workflow which emulates the site you referenced, such as...
File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion
In the Format drop-down, select MPEG-4
Click on the Options... button and...
    Alter Image Size to 320x240.
Change the Data Rate to 500
    Set Frame Rate to 15
Alter the Key Frame property to 75
    Click OK
After you've selected the right destination folder, go ahead and press Save.
This will produce a .mp4 file. If you want to make this a .mov file, change the extension in the Browser.
...and that hasn't given you the results you're looking for?

  • Is it possible to export a video clip from DVD player to iMovie '09?

If I load a homemade DVD onto my iMac using Disk Utility and then import either the entire disc or portions of the disc into iMovie, that works just fine. However I noticed that some clips are missing in iMovie, even though they are on the iMac in form of a .dmg file on the desktop. The same file that was used to import in to iMovie. If I look at this file using DVD player, everything is there, but some of these clips are missing in the event window. So I created a video clip in DVD player of those pieces missing in iMovie and now how can I get these into iMovie?

Hey, best way to import video from a DVD video disc for editing is to acctually have a simple video file. Use Handbrake or MPEG StreamClip to read the disc and create a video file off the video stream.
You could also set in and out points anc manually create several clips, which may help with playback and rendering for editing. I don't know how extensive you're going to get in your editing with iMovie...
    Hope that helped.

  • TV not displaying DVD video from Macbook but showing slideshow instead

Connecting new MacbookPro to new LCD TV with newly purchased cables as follows: miniDVI to DVI converter connected to mini DVI port on Macbook and to DVI/HDMI cable which is connected into HDMI port on TV. Audio connected via standard one to two audio cable. When playing DVD on macbook the audio comes through on TV ok but the TV screen is showing a slideshow of photos from the macbook rather than the DVD video. Settings on TV are all as specified in TV manual - the issue is clearly what is being transmitted through the macbook's mini DVI port. Wierd thing is that no application appears to be running on macbook to play photos as a slideshow - there must be some background task or service running but, not being familiar with mac operating systems i don't know how to check for this. does anyone know what is going on? Are there some settings i need to tweak on the macbook?

It may be an instance of this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1109491&tstart=0
There are a few threads talking about the poor quality iMovie produces when your footage is an interlaced format (e.g., DV, HDV).
    Search around for "quality".

  • Best way to transfer DVD videos from laptop to ipad air

Best way to transfer DVD videos from laptop to ipad air

presuming they're not copywriteed commercial dvd's, you can use a program like Handbrake to convert the dvd files to mp4's that you can then import into iTunes and sync to your device.
If they're copywritted commercial dvd's then you'd have to break the copywrite encoding to transcode the files and since that is illegal in the US no one here can help you with that.

  • Ripped audio from DVD to FCP

Once I've used a ripping program like Mac the Ripper to get video and audio files from DVD, how do I get the audio only onto a cd?

    Geez David.
I kinda noted that. The question is where are the original unencoded audio sources? Is this music? Or someone talking? If it is music, use the the sources if they are not copyrighted.
You don't need "Mac the Ripper" to extract unencrypted or non copyrighted DVDs.
We get so many requests here about extracting VOBs from DVDs.
Given the terms of use, and laws about extracting from commercial DVDs, many of us are suspicious when a "client" brings in an encoded DVD and wants it "reauthored" for his reel.
Now this isn't you, but when I say get the original source of audio, then I wonder why it isn't available.
Or why didn't the DVD simply contain aiff audio files as a data DVD
    take care

  • I am trying to connect my Sony DCR-TRV350 to iMovie so that I can make DVD's from family videos.  I am having problems getting the video camera connected.  Any advice on how to do this?

I am trying to connect my Sony DCR-TRV350 to iMovie so that I can make DVD's from family videos.  I am having problems getting the video camera connected.  Any advice on how to do this?

What happens when, after you connect your cam, you go to File > Import Media?
But before that, does your cam require you to export your video files upon USB connection? I have a JVC Everio HD and I have to "Export to Library" from the cam's menu first-thing. This was true even in prior iMovie versions.

  • How to setup Compressor to create video from multiple sequences within FCP?

I am wondering how I can set compressor up to create videos from multiple sequences within FCP. When I click file -> export - > compressor for a sequence and go into the program, it doesn't allow me to go back into FCP. I just get a spinning beach ball. Is there no way to set it up so I can prep a bunch of fcp sequences within compressor and then click submit and walk away? I have over 100 sequences that need to be exported so it would be a little difficult to do this one at a time. Thanks.

    Batch processing
*Step one. Make sure everything in every sequence is rendered.*
*Step two. Make a folder somewhere and name it something relevant.*
*Step three. In FCP select all you sequences that you want to compress and right click (option), choose Batch Export from the contextual menu.*
*Step three point one. In the batch export window click on settings and choose the folder you made in step two for the destination. Make sure Make Self-Contained is not check and include Audio and Video.*
*Step four. Click export in the batch window.*
Once that is done you can close FCP.
    Now in Compressor
*Step five. Make a setting that will give you the output that you want (mpeg2, AC3, h.264, whatever). Make a destination for where you want to save the output.*
*Step six. Make a droplet from the settings you made in step five.*
    You can quit Compressor now.
*Step seven. Take the files that you batch exported from FCP in step three and four and drop them on the droplet you made in step six.*
