From fcp5 to fcp4.5

I didnt read the small print!
And now i have been slaving away for days at college on their new fcp5 suite only to bring my project home for weekend work on my fcp4.5 powerbook to find they are not compatable!
Is their anyway of saving a project to work with earlier versions?

this comes up more frequently than it should. do a search for XML and also look up XML in your manual. i've never used the XML capabilities but from reading, i understand you may be able to open your fcp5 project in 4.5. don't quote me though, do the research to confirm.

  • FCP6 BIG PROBLEM - Media Manager Speed change from FCP5.1.4

    Hi!
We have problem using a media manager project from FCP5.1.4 in FCP6. Almost ALL clips with speed change are messed up (all new speed around 1% to 7%). This is really a problem for us, since we always do media manager of everything we do to be able to go back and make changes.
We have 2 MacPro 2 x 2.66Ghz, 8GB RAM, 10.4.9, Quicktime 7.1.6, FCP6, Decklink HD extreme or AJA Kona LH (with the latest driver).
We tryed with different format: HDTV 1080i50, DVCProHD 720p59.94, SD Uncompressed 10bit, .... always the same problem.
Is there a new way to use the MM in FCP6?
    Thank you!

Hi! And thanx for the tip.
But we use Media Manager everyday with speed change WITHOUT any problem (with FCP 5.1.4).
We already try something similar, we copied the good clips (with speed change) from the ORIGINAL timeline to the media manager one, deleted the bad clip (with the wrong speed change) and pasted the good one in there place. Then we reconnected those clips with the MEDIA MANAGED one. We get a warning that the IN and OUT of the media are not the same, CLICKED continue and everything is always (well 95% of the time) OK.
SO yes, we have the solution, but it's really really long and painful, especially with multilayered sequences.
Right now, when I open any Media Manager in FCP 5.1.4 (created with FCP 5.1.4) everything works fine. Doing the same thing with FCP6 = speed change problem.
Thanks again, still looking for another solution.

  • EXPORTING TO QUICKTIME FROM FCP5 AND ONLY SOME OF THE FILM IS TRANSFERED?

    Hello All
Im in the midst of exporting my sequence from FCP5 to quicktime via the "Quick Time Movie" option. When I do this about 30 seconds of footage is missing from the final QT that us created.
If any one can help I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks

In the time line make sure that you go to the end and then press o (out Point)
also if you have a clip selected that is all that will be exported. From your info thats all I got for you. LOL

  • Export from FCP5

Will anyone share their settings for the best (highest quality) settings for export from FCP5? I have had, what I would call, less than satisfactory results using Compressor 2. I know the MPEG encoder will have a significant impact on the quality of the final DVD. I am trying to output the highest quality so I can test different encoders. Also, would there be any difference to export an uncompressed AVI as opposed to Quicktime? I have ProCoder 2 on my PC and would like to test it as well. Thanks for your help.

    #3 output lossless DV
    Shane's Stock Answer #3:
To export your DV project so there is no loss in quality, simply go to the File Menu and select EXPORT>QUICKTIME MOVIE. Not Quicktime Conversion, fot this will compress the footage. Make sure the settings match your timeline settings, make it self contained and you are set.

  • Exporting to DVD Studio PRo from FCP5 ....  Can't find answer anywhere..

Sorry guys, but I have read about 2 hours worth of posts without any answers to my question that is driving me insane. My eyes are bleeding and I am tired of experimenting having to wait hours for exporting to finish just to find out it isn't good quality or not acceptable in DVDSP.
Here is my deal and hopefully someone can help me resolve my issue.
I shot in 24p HDV and edited in FCP5. Finishes project and now want to burn on DVD for friends and family =) End project is about 18 minutes long 720p
Tried using QuickTime Movie export and "current settings" and the file ended up being like 370mb, which seems REALLY small, so I am not sure how to change "current settings," since I am convinced those settings are not the best quality.
I then tried DCHDV PRO 24F in the alternate settings and I ended up with a 5.6gb file, which looked beautiful but too large for a DVD. I tried using compressor to make it smaller using m2v conversation but DVSP refuses the file. I would love to use a QuickTime Movie export that can get the file around 4gb and keep the GREAT quality and still be accepted in DVSP.
So what I really need from someone out there is:
What the best settings for exporting a 18 min HDV 24p movie from FCP5 to DVDSP losing the least amount of quality as possible?
Poor quality to me is flickering credits, poor colors etc.

I believe you have the fundamental misunderstanding of what is happening in this process.
When you create a DVD, all video material - without regard to original format - is converted to a highly compressed MPEG2 format and the audio to either an aiff or ac3 format. The video and audio files are then mixed (muxed) together into a series of VOB files. The major controllers of final quality are: original footage quality, compression bitrate and the amount of motion within frames. The overall length has an impact on bitrate as the DVD spec was designed for a 2 hr limit. HDV presents it's own problems as the 15 frame GOP format is not simply converted to the SD NTSC format.
You may want to spend time to understand how the mpeg2 compression works so you can make suitable adjustments if the result is unacceptable. It is a bit of a dark art but controllable to some extent.
The easy setups available in DVDSP are a good place to start and each parameter within the compression process is adjustable.
    good luck.

  • AAF export from FCP5

Has anyone found a way to export AAF files with FCP5? Automatic Duck used to be able to handle OMF exporting, but they don't support multiclips.
I'm looking for a reliable way to export sound info. from FCP to Pro Tools, and retain volume information.
    Cheers!

can you not just collapse your multiclip before
    exporting with Automatic Duck?
The answer to this question is No. Unfortunatly collapsing multiclips is not sufficient. We hope in the future to support multiclips, it is obviously very important.

  • Retiming in shake from fcp5

    Hi folks,
Wonder if you can help. When I sent a clip from the timeline in fcp to shake, I opened it up successfully and applied a constant speed change in shake. The problem is that it seemed to then lose the in and out point of the clip and apply it to the whole of the captured footage that the clip had been edited from, thus I lost my piece of selected footage. Anyone know what's going on? Am I better to export said clip as a separate quicktime and then filein? The possibility of sending straight from the fcp timeline seemed a good one and shake's optical flow innards make lovely smooth slo-mo. Any ideas for maintaining a quick and smooth workflow?

This is what I do. I don't like the "send to" capability from the FCP timeline, probably because I don't understand it, so I always make separate files, do my things in Shake, export, import back into FCP.
You don't have Motion 3 which has an optical flow retimer that works the same way, on the entire clip, not just the portion used in a sequence.

  • Xport OMF or XML from Fcp5 for 5.1 mix?(Pro Tools better?)

Is anyone using Logic to do there fcp project sweetening or is everyone a die hard Pro Tools user? I figured Logic Pro 7 would be the better way to go since I have apples tools. I also found out that PT LE does not support surround mixing. Well fact is I can't afford the PT/TDM gear. So can I get audio from my timeline in fcp to logic and still retain audio attributes and accomplish a surround mix well with Logic Pro 7 or is this left to the big boys with the PT tools? Any direction/workflow? My goal is to recut some real old school short I made and redo it all with fcp studio and freshening up the audio and finally surround mix it. Am I crazy or is someone doing this type of stuff...for fun?
Peace. Thanks any info would be supa fly.

ps: I also have the Tascam fw-1884 surface to get the mix in and out and m-audio studiphile monitors.

I never use the keyframes for audio.
Because indeed the audio-guy will not receive that info from the omf.
What I always do is add transitions to the audio. sometimes need to scirror the audio. adjust the level on the second part and the ad a transition.
This way your audio-guy will know he needs to do 'something' on that point in the mix. he will not get the level information, but he'll see you made a transition there. together with your scratch mix (see danny boy's post) he'll figure out...

  • Problems with exporting from FCP5 to Compressor 2

I am getting an error message as follows:
File error: A file of this name already exists.
I click okay. Compressor launches. I get an error message as follows:
Error: Cant preview movie. Final cut Pro is busy.
I select mpeg 2 DVD quality 90 min best. Check settings to be okay. Process batch. In the batch monitor it reads as follows:
    Export status: failed.
Can anyone help me with this situation? I have tried renaming the sequence, saving the project as a different name, and I have went through the long process of reinstalling Compressor and deleting the appropriate receipts, and apps.
    Thanks,
    rmlaurit

    From your sequence select :
    File > Export > Quicktime Movie ...
Settings: Current Settings (that means the same codec that your timeline, what ever it is)
    Include: Audio and Video
    Markers: (what you need here)
    Don't select: Recompress All Frmaes
Select (if you have enough dfree space i your drives): Make Movie Self-Contained
You'll get a Quicktime Movie with same quality that your timeline. Open Compressor application from your App folder, drag and drop the exported movie file and select the preset you need.
    Hope it makes sense !

  • Exporting OMF to Protools from FCP5

I am running FCP 5.1.4 and cutting an HD pix, shot on an F900, downconverted to a DVC PRO 100 hd for editing. I want to export an OMF for a pro tools session. From what I hear, FCP 5 will not export OMF with the pan and volume levels. The sound editor will basically have to remix all the sound. Is this true?

I never use the keyframes for audio.

  • Blocky Sorenson 3 exports from FCP5

I'm exporting fairly long (40-60 min) QTs for a P.A. to transcribe. I'm using Sorenson 3 compression, and re-sizing to 320x240, to keep disk space low. My original files are DV with no additonal compression.
The start of my exported files look great, and then somewhere in the middle they become EXTREMELY blocky with tons of artifacts. On some files, the image is crisp again at the end.
Motion JPEG-A compression DOES work -- it held its look throughout the whole hour-long file.
I've trashed all my old QT 6 and 7 receipts from the Library, and have re-installed QT 7.1 fresh -- still no luck. The only receipts I haven't thrown out seem to be for either MPEG or Pro functionality, and I don't want to pay $30 for an upgrade I already have.
Does anyone know why my FCP or Mac would have trouble exporting long QTs with Sorenson 3 compression, but not with Motion JPEG-A compression?
    Thanks.

Skydo, I saw your questions over at the FCP discussion yesterday. And they thought you would get a better answer to your question here.
As for me I've never liked Sorenson 3. I think you said you had the quality slider halfway. But never mention what key frame setting or bit rate your using.
Slider being half way and a high setting for key frames with a low bit rate will give you a bad compression.
I've had great success with H.264 out of FPC. Some people hate compressor, being slow. But with both FCP/Compressor I can fine tune my compression to were you can't tell the H.264 from the original. I all way use one pass first, being fast. If it looks great I use it. If not I go for the multi-pass. Thus adding more compression time. You can add compression and edit makers at places in the video were you think you'll have compression problems.
There a ton of things you can use in FCP/Compressor to make great video that people over look.

  • Importing 13 sec sound from FCP5 shows 15 in soundtrack!!??

When I send Quick Time movie into Soundtrac... I have no problem. 13 sec = 13 sec. When I export from FCP just the sound clip AIF 13 sec file and import into Soundtrac the sound file is stretced by more 15% it's showing 15 sec.
    What is the problem?
    Thanks,

My guess is that FCP keeps track internally of whether the two audio tracks are to be seen as stereo. When it is imported as a Quicktime file, the default is dual mono. I believe if you place it on a timeline and link the audio tracks and drag the clip back to the browser it will then be seen as stereo.

  • Export from FCP5 to mobileme

How do you export a clip from the time so it can be uploaded to mobileme? Unlike imovie I do not see an easy (one step) way. Is there a way to do the large and medium size movies like imovie?

iMovie's settings were H.264, I believe, so you'll want to export using Quicktime Conversion and choose H.264 as your codec. You can then set a specific frame size from there.

  • HDV QT Reference Movie Exported from FCP5 Freezes

I'm having a problem when I export HDV to a Quicktime Reference Movie. The video plays back to a specific point, then freezes, while the audio keeps playing.
This happens even with cuts-only (or even uncut footage), no effects movies when they are exported as QT Reference Movies.
Can anyone give me some advice?

STUDIO X: I tried rendering the QT Reference Movie to the same disk as the media, but I still get the same video freeze with audio that works just fine. The video freezes 21-minutes into the 42-minute video.
FINAL CUT PRO: Thank you for your suggestion, but QT Reference Movies were designed to accomplish specific function. I use them to burn DVD's, create videos for the internet and mobile phones... lots of things. Your suggestion is simply circumventing a function that SHOULD work. Your suggestion also takes much more time and disk space. You're taking something that should be simple and making it complicated. Unless I have to move a copy of my HDV movie to another computer outside of my studio, this is unacceptable.

  • Trouble exporting to DVDSP from FCP5

I'm having trouble exporting my sequence into DVDSP4. I've tried using Quicktime Conversion and Quicktime but the sequence doesn't import into DVDSP and neither do the menue templattes. When I attempt to convert to Quicktime a message pops up with "data needs to be rendered first," although the red render bar isn't there. It's just grey in the bar area. What is going on here. HELP!!!
