From Firefox, can I open an FTP site in Windows Explorer?

Firefox presents a simple FTP view of files. Firefox does not support active FTP mode, or uploading. Thus, some other program must be used to navigate and work an FTP site.
Windows - Internet Explorer - provides a connection to open and view an FTP site via Windows Explorer.
Why can't Firefox do the same?

• How can I display the folders in an ftp site in Windows Explorer during a Firefox web browsing session?

I would like to view and select multiple files from a folder on an ftp site and copy them to a folder on my computer, but with Firefox it seems I have to plod through one file at a time. In IE there is a Page button which has an option to display the site in Windows Explorer, which allows me to select and copy as many files as I want at one time.
Does such a feature exist in Firefox, or an approximation?
Thank you

That is done via an onbeforeunload or onunload event that displays a JavaScript alert.

• How do I view an FTP site in Windows Explorer for drag and drop file upload in Firefox?

In Internet Explorer you have the drop-down menu option called '''"Page"''' (located below the address bar, on the right-hand side). In the options listed you can''''' "Open FTP side in Windows Explorer"'''''.
I cannot seem to locate a similar option within Firefox 4.0.
Guidance and suggestions welcome. Thanks.

• Firefox can't open any Microsoft link - get "windows stopped working error"

When I try to open a Microsoft Word or xls file (not Powerpoint), I get the useless Microsoft popup: "Microsoft X has stop working. Windows is looking for a solution....". This just started the other day and I haven't made any changes to my computer. I don't know if this an Office or Firefox issue. It happens on multiple website/programs in Firefox.

If you still get crashes after that, try to disable Protected Mode in Flash 11.3 and above by adding the line ProtectedMode=0 to the Flash "mms.cfg" file located in one of these locations: [46]
(Windows 32bit) C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
(Windows 64bit) C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
For example, on a Windows 7 64-bit system, open the C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash folder, copy the file "mms.cfg" to the desktop, open it in Notepad, add a new line
ProtectedMode=0
and then close Notepad, saving your changes. Next, go back to the C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash folder, rename the original file to "mms.cfgBAK" (to save it as a backup) and then drag and drop in the modified "mms.cfg" file from the desktop.
Note: To re-enable Flash Protected Mode, either restore a backup of the original mms.cfg file, if you saved one, or else re-edit the mms.cfg file to remove the
ProtectedMode=0 l
line you added. Updating Flash Player or installing a newer version does not automatically re-enable Protected Mode

• Can't Open FTP Site in File Explorer

After installing Google Chrome, the option in Internet Explorer to Open FTP Site in File Explorer is not working. Click the drop down arrow on the Page button and select the option "Open FTP Site in File Explorer" and no explorer dialog box appears;
nothing appears. Internet Explorer 11 is the default web browser and the Operating
System is Windows 7 Pro.
Steps taken to resolve:
1. Verified FTP folder view and Use Passive FTP is enabled in Internet Explorer. Tools > Internet Options> Advanced > Browser
2. Opened the website in Compatibility View.
3. Reset the Internet Explorer settings in Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
4. Temporarily disabled the firewall

• Firefox can't open normally without going through the "this is embarrassing" routine; nor does it close down properly; it also sticks frequently, i.e. screen freezes for a minute or more; should I uninstall and re-install to try and debug?

Firefox can't open normally without going through the "this is embarrassing" routine; nor does it close down properly; I get the "end program" message and have to say "end now"it also sticks frequently, i.e. screen freezes for a minute or more; should I uninstall and re-install to try and debug?
- I've used Firefox exclusively for around 2 years.
- My outlook express has no problems
- other programs seem unaffected; it seems peculiar to Firefox.
- my main use is surfing the net, primarily entering competitions on line via specialist competition sites.
- every day at some stage(s) I have to switch computer off as Firefox has got very slow/sticky/freezes.
I'm not techy by any means, but I can only thing of un- and re-installing to hopefully start with a clean slate.

Sounds like something is keeping Firefox from closing properly. See this:
• FF is not letting me open an FTP site.

Well, I am trying to open an FTP site, and FF says the connection timed out. I know that when I use this site in Internet Explorer I have to click on "open this as FTP" or something like that. Can you help??

Firefox only supports downloading via passive FTP.
If a server needs active FTP or if you need to upload then look at an extension like FireFTP or an external program like FileZilla.
You can look at:

* FileZilla: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

• A Copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time

I have shut down my mac for half a dozen times in response to the warning -- A Copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time -- that comes up each time I attempt to launch the browser. I have tried out the solutions suggested for previous users (on the Mozilla Forum) who were experiencing similar issues, but I can't even see Firefox on my Mac's Activity Monitor. What's going on?
I started experiencing this problem out of the blue on a networked computer two days ago (on Tuesday December 6). I have been using computers on this network for more than a year and it's only now that I have started experiencing this problem. Furthermore, I have been a Firefox user for more than four years and never encountered this issue. It's frustrating considering I have come to rely on Firefox as my browser of choice.
Other than this background I don't know what else to tell you by way of details.

Hi Swarnava,
Thanks for your prompt response. Intriguingly, when I logged on to my Mac (it's on a university network) this morning and launched Firefox it opened without a problem. If the issue resurfaces, I will try out the solutions you posted. Judging from the experiences of users who successfully trouble-shot their issues, apparently, Madakkadam's solution would be most helpful.
All the best.

• "A copy of firefox is already open. Only one copy of firefox can be open at a time." What do I do?

I was installing Firefox 4.0.1 and something went wrong. Now every time I try to open Firefox, an error message that says "A copy of firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time." I've looked it up and every forum says something about a terminal.. and lock files.. Could somebody PLEASE break it down and explain it as if you were talking to a 2 year old? I am computer illiterate.

Maybe Firefox messages have been modified slightly. Please read the article
*[[Firefox is already running but is not responding]] <-- clickable link --
(the illustrated articles will explain a lot better than I could)
The article explains how to find and stop the extra Firefox process that is causing problems. (You usually use Windows Task Manager to do this - if it is a Windows computer) There is a selection option on the help page with a + by it towards the top right, click that to change the help page details to match the operating system and version of Firefox you use.
If the problem keeps occurring it will be because Firefox has some files mixed up, for instance multiple copies of the files it uses to try to get Firefox to display the details of the last browsing session when you restart Firefox. You now need to follow the link from the above article to this one:

• I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox several times. Every time I try to open Firefox I get an error message saying "Close Firefox"," A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time."

I uninstall Firefox, then reinstall Firefox, try to open Firefox, and get an error message in a popup box saying,
"Close Firefox"
"A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time."

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
*https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
See:
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

• I try to open Firefox. Get error message saying Firefox is already running and needs to close - another error message say Firefox can't open

Turned on laptop (rebooted) after being away from it for a few hours. Went to open my home page. Error message popped up saying Firefox is already running and must be closed. I closed it and another error message popped up saying Firefox can't open - incomplete or missing files.
I went into Processes to close Firefox. Selected 'end process' but nothing happened.
Tried to use Internet Explorer but it just gets hung up. Cannot access anything.
And, because I can't open Firefox, I can't go a refresh.
Everything was working just fine a few hours ago.
Any thoughts?

What is the computer system and Firefox on the bad computer?
Separate Issue;
Your System Details on this computer shows;
Multiple versions of your Adobe programs.
Having more than one version of a program may cause issues.
Go to '''adobe.com''' and download the full installers after removing
all of the old programs.
Start '''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web Link} by holding down the '''<Shift>
''(Mac Options)'' ''' key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up in Windows.

• When I click on the icon to open Firefox I get an error message " A copy of Firefox is already open, only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time".

I have tried to download and run Firefox on my MAC OS 10.6.7 several times and have run into this error message every time:
"A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time". A search through the computer does not fine another copy of Firefox and there is no window open or evidence of the program open.
When I got this computer a year ago I copied the hard drive from the old computer onto the new and the old computer had a copy of Firefox on it and the program worked on that computer. It would not run on the new computer so I thought maybe it was due to the Intel chip so I deleted the program and downloaded the newest version at the time. This is when I started getting the error message and subsequent attempts have yielded the same results.
Can you be of help?
