From G3 OS9 to Intel OSX

I'm helping my older uncle, an OS 9 power user, get a new computer.
He understands lots of things about computers, but there are many themes and ideas that he doesn't get, so consider him a newbie. He says he doesn't learn well hands on, but likes reading books (books by Pouge being his favourite).
He has:
G3 iBook (I think it's the white dual USB version with the clear keys) with OS 9
Switching too:
Macbook Pro
I only breifly used OS 9, so I need a little help too.
Here's what I need:
-He's an Office 98 for Mac user, we need a good book on the 2004 Office. He uses Powerpoint a lot!
-How to get his old files to his new computer (Migration + Firewire?)
-Would we need a file converter to use his old powerpoint/word/excel files to the new 2004 office, or will they just open regularly.
-He uses the OS 9 version of Outlook, is there a way to backup his settings and use them in Mail or Entourage?
A lot of the books I had found on switching from OS 9, were switching to 10.1 or 10.2, which would be iffy on helping him. Is there an online resource for switching to tiger directly?

About switching up to OSX. You say books switching to OSX.1 etc are iffy. Look under Mac OS X Tiger: Missing Manual by David Pogue on Amazon.com and there are secondhand ones from $13.98. There is a chapter on where the things you miss in OS 9 have gone, and what has replaced them. That is extremely useful.
Another tip for switching up from OS9 to OSX. I would recommend downloading the free hotkeys application Spark from Versiontracker at http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22675
If you are like me then one of the things you might sorely miss at first in switching to OS X is the OS 9 function keys by which you could configure a function key to load an application with the press of one key. With Spark you can do just that for applications and documents. So if you configure separate function keys for your mail application, browser and eg Word, then that will give you a core basic way of getting on with your daily work while still learning all the ins and outs of OSX, which will take a while.
The good news is that even coming this late to OSX it is very worth it and will become second nature. I'm 18 months out of OS9 and now can hardly even remember what different things were called in that system.

  • Importing Contacts from OE5 (OS9)  to Thunderbird (OSX)

I've just moved to OSX from OS9, where I used Outlook Express 5.02 for mail.
I'm setting up Thunderbird but am unable to import the Address Book and Messages from OE. There is no option in Import for OE and any files in OE Main Identity that can be recognised via Thunderbird's Import fail to come across.
    Ideas, please. Thank you.
    Michael

Having given up someone suggested a solution which works, albeit tediously. In summary the process for 10.3 (it was suggested 10.4 was different) is:
Import messages into Mail from OE.
Find imported files in Mail's Mailboxes folder. Make a copy and work on that.
In turn control-click each .mbox file and choose 'Show Package Contents'.
From window that opens move the file named mbox to your profile folder in Thunderbird's Profiles folder. (In practice it was simpler to rename each mbox with the name I wanted that box to have before moving it rather than rename it as soon as it was in Profiles.)
    Restart Thunderbird.
Check structure against Mail (assuming you worked on a copy) or OE.
Depending on any folder structure you used in OE you need to check exactly what it is you are moving. With hindsight it might have been better to move the mailboxes across in a flat structure then create any folders.
Importing addresses failed again. I was pointed to a free utility called Address Book Exporter which creates a .txt file from Address Book, that was easy to import into Thunderbird but although cards were created all had some/all information missing. I have given up on that!

  • Transferring data files from OS9.1 to OSX(10.4.7

I've done a lot of reading this evening and I am still unclear about transferring info from OS9.1 to OSX(10.4.7). Programs are not transferrable, but data files were not addressed directly. The platforms are the issue. My understanding is that Office:Mac 2004 and Quicken 2007 will translate data files from AppleWorks6 and Quicken 2000. I have data files on my iMacOS9.1, also backed up on an Acomdata external harddrive. Is there anything, or way, that I can get these files transferred to my new iMac20"(10.4.7)machine? From what I'm reading, FireWire target disk mode holds some faint hope. I'm concerned that if I access the external harddrive, it may require a re-initializing, even though it was originally partitioned to receive both PC and Apple OS files.

Continuing trial and error. My old Imation Floppy Drive worked well to transfer Quicken files across from OS9.1 to OSX(10.4.7). The new iMac apparently had the necessary driver, because everything came to life when I hooked into the USB2.0 port. At 1.4m it's slow. Probably the same success can be accomplished by CD's and probably the same with the Fire Wire Target Disk Mode, if you are careful about the material you try to transfer. In the case of Quicken, when the file was transferred, a dialog box came up giving a recommended procedure to follow. Easy!

  • Scanning/printing into/from native OS9 apps running in classic

I am sure some of what I am about to ask is/has been covered in the numerous threads under this section, but I have a time crunch on and need help (the Mac is my wife's, but I get to do the tech support since I work in IT [management now, not hands on any more and when it was hands on, it was 8 years ago, SGI's IRIX OS and apps support, not 'hardware'] and she has a deadline approaching).
So take a seat and read on, this is not a short post ...
I have an upgraded G4 sawtooth which was running MacOS9 prior to the upgrades.
During the upgrades (to fully benefit from the numerous enhancements with Tiger [10.4.6 retail version]) I had to go to MacOS9.2 (via MacOS9.1) which I did via the downloads page on the apple site.
The original HD is still loaded with the original MacOS9 installation plus firmware and OS updates to 9.2 and I can boot from it just fine if I want to.
There is a separate hard disk with the Tiger install on an OS partition (keeping users away from systems files always seemed to be sensible MO) which I created during the OSX installation process; the remainder of the disk is set aside for 'data'.
The printer (Epson SP1200) and the scanner (Epson Perfection 1660, if I recall correctly [I'm not in front of the system as I type this]) worked just fine and dandy under MacOS9.
Under OSX, the printer still works, but I do not see it in the chooser when running in classic (should i be able to?) and I am unable to access any of the printer specific utilities (like head cleaning, alignment, ink levels etc). I have the drivers from Epson for OSX installed and the drivers for 8.? - 9.2 were installed and working prior to slapping OSX on the system. I believe that I have the Epson OSX driver selected for use by anything needing printing in OSX (after referencing article <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4682179&#4682179> in a response from Matt Broughton to an earlier question) but am not convinced; the print interface looks suspiciously similar to the GIMP stuff that worked 'out of the box' with the Tiger install and I still get no access to the utilities allowing me to maintain print quality.
I read in another thread that OSX does not allow classic to access 'hardware'.
    - Is this the case and if so, does 'hardware' include peripherals?
    - If I 'boot' into the original 9.2, am I really using native 9.2, or is it still classic and am I still 'wrapped' in OSX?
    - Do I need to re-install the peripherals' drivers to get them to show up as expected in MacOS9 as a result of the 'selective surgery' performed on the old OS by the OSX installation process?
    - Is it down to proper re-selection of the original extensions for the old MacOS9 setup?
    I have yet to install the OSX drivers for the scanner, but similar questions arise;
    - do I need to do so in order that applications running in Classic 'see' the scanner (and for TWAIN to work)?
    - if I install the OSX drivers, will Classic know what to do with them when the scanner is 'asked for' from an OS9 application or does Classic need the MacOS9 drivers as well?
    - Do I need to reinstall the MacOS9 drivers as a result of the 'selective surgery' performed on the old OS by the OSX installation process?
    - Could it be improper selection of extensions?
    Help, please
PS - Any recommendations regarding worthy tomes or texts 'out there' to facilitate troubleshooting issues with OSX running on PowerPC hardware with MacOS9 apps needed in perfect working order (until I can pursuade my wife to upgrade [via £2000 or so of application costs - ouch]) to OSX versions of said applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) would be welcome!

    Writing to myself ...
OK, the printing issues are resolved, it was down to extensions being disabled, nothing more.
Still a problem with the scanner. It works OK in OSX. However, in Classic, from Photoshop 5.5, when going to Import->Twain Acquire, I get informed ...
'Cannot find the scanner on the bus
Please ensure that it is switched on, ready to scan and that the cables are attached corectly'
Without wishing to sound irked, the scanner is on, ready to scan and cabled correctly (hence working in OSX!)
After clicking OK, the next msg is ...
'Could not complete the Import command because there is no scanner installed.'
Which again is bogus, since the scanner is installed.
I uninstalled TWAIN with the scanner detached, then re-installed per the instructions regarding upgrading systems. I also did the TWAIN re-install on OS9 first, prior to installing it on OSX, again per the instructions for TWAIN on OSX.
Starting to think fondly of sledge-hammers now, so somebody please help.
For now, I have a work around (use Epson Scan in OSX to scan an image, then open that in PS ...) but still would like to be able to get it to work from inside PS, as it used to before OSX.

  • Please help, need to upgrade from 9.2.2 to osx 10.4 Tiger on imac g3 400 dv

Hello, I would greatly appreciate assistance to upgrade my operating system from 9.2.2 to osx 10.4.10. I have gotten the firmware upgrade installed to 4.1.9. Can anyone tell me what else I need to upgrade to have this computer able to install Tiger 10.4, on an imac g3 400 dv slot loading.....
Right now when I try to install the disc 10.4 using the option key at restart, it wont load the install disc. Any help would be appreciated , thank u in advance!!!!!!!

Hi, thank u for responding, my harddrive is 10 gigs, and my memory ram is only 64 megs, I ordered 2 512 mg from 18004memory.com and it didnt work , the computer said there was a memory issue. So I returned the memory back to 18004 memory.com...... I will neve ruse them again , because on their website they stated its guranteed to work and is compliant with imac 400 dv. They stated they will send me another set from another manufacturer, but to return the memory first.....
I know I meet all the requirements for tiger , except for the ram which apple says I need 256 mg,
But I was referring to any firmaware upgrades or bios upgrades or any of those type of programming upgrades to ready it for tiger, I know I installed the 4.19, and went from os 9.0 to its current 9.22, I think that alone was 5 upgrades. I think I might be missing an upgrade or maybe not. I will run the utility u posted and thank u for that.....
Apple told me that I can installl tiger 10.4.10 on this computer.
The install discs I bought on ebay state imac MAC osx install disc one and there is and install disc 2, it says AHT VERSION 3A127, and dated as produced in the year 2007. it colored grey , but doesnt have the black X like someone else posted it should have
Oh and it does open the files in 9.22, it does mount, and it does have folders,
Thank u for ur help as I progress to ultimately saving this imac....
    many thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro. After setting up my new laptop, I got an email from Apple about upgrading to OSX Lion. I wasn't sure what the email was so I accidentally deleted it. Afterwards, I was informed that I need this upgrade and I have no way of retrieving this email. Is there anyway another email can be sent out to me so I don't have to purchase OSX Lion through the App Store?

Visit http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate and follow the appropriate links. You will be asked what your serial number is and where you purchased your computer but you will get lion free of charge.

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
    have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    iChat works well.
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
    No idea.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
    after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
    as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.
    Thank you for any help,
    -Evan

Deleted safari from powerbook G4 15in running OSX 10.5.8 how do I get it back

Did you just delete the Safari icon from the dock? If so, bring up Finder, choose applications, and drag the Safari icon back to the dock.  However, if you really deleted it (dragged it to the trash and emptied the trash) ... you can download it from the OS X 10.5 Leopard install disk, using the optional installs. After clicking on optional installs, click on applications, and choose Safari.

Very loosely!  Actually that quote from Wikipedia is wrong with regard to Adobe Photoshop and should be corrected (at least as it applies to version 9, CS2, after which, later versions, starting with CS3 do not need Rosetta in any event).
While I am not sure about the rest of that quoted phrase (acually in most of my posts on this forum indicating my solution for running PowerPC applications [Installing Snow Leopard with Rosetta into Parallels] in Lion or Mt. Lion, I do note: "Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization." I do, however, see this as a virtualization problem and not a Rosetta problem (as opposed to these programs running on a computer that can actually boot into Snow Leopard and run these programs in emulation, where Rosetta should not pose a problem).
My experience with Adobe Photoshop is limited to CS2, which is now available for free download from the Adobe website.  My uses for this program are limited, such as when one frustrated Mt. Lion upgrader noted that Apple should post a flag about the loss of Rosetta (see my graphic posted above).
But my understanding is that Adobe Photoshop (at least up to version CS2) does not require any rendering, which could be hampered and slow in virtualization and perhaps additionally with Rosetta.
Use of Photoshop 9 (CS2) appears to be similar to use of Freehand MX and none of the users of either of these powerpc applications have come back with any complaints after my suggestion to them on how to continue to run these powerpc apps in Lion or Mt. Lion.

  • How to upgade from OS9 FCP to OSX FCP?!

Okay, so I've got an iMac G4 running OSX that I want to install FCP3 on (not enough RAM to run 4/HD). Trouble is, I have a Final Cut 2 installer for OS9, and the FCP3 upgrade installer is OSX, but it appears I have to start my path with FCP2 in OS9! Is there any way around this? Or do I actually have to re-initialize my machine, give it an OS9 partition, install FCP2 in OS9, and then upgrade to FCP3 in OSX?
    Anyone?

256MB will hardly run v3, especially with Panther. You need more RAM.
You'd have to install OS9. Boot into OS9. Install v2. Initialize. Install OS X. Then run the upgrade.

  • How can I transfer 2GB files from OS9 machine to OSX machine ??

So I need to transfer MPEG video files greater than 2GB in size from my encoding system to my file server. Encoding system cannot run OSX, so is currently running OS 9.2.2, but file server is running OS 10.4 (NOT OS Server, just regular OS). What is the best approach to this? FTP through network? Is there an utility that will take Apple Talk out of the picture?
Much Thanks to whomever can help!

If you have Ethernet cabling, you can use Apple File Sharing. In older Mac OS, the software is installed automatically when an Ethernet interface is detected at install time.
Although 10.4 and later are not willing to share using AppleTalk, 10.4 and later are certainly willing to share using IP, which has been available since AppleShare Chooser extension v 3.7 (readily useable in OS 7.5.3).
Starting from the older Mac, use the "Server IP Address" button that appears when AppleShare is selected in the Chooser, and enter the IP Address of the more modern Mac. \[If your older Mac is running OS 9 or uses ShareWay IP, you can start from either Mac]
A dialog appears requiring you to enter the Username and Password for the Mac whose files you will be accessing in order to share its Files or Folders. The items being shared are then mounted on the Desktop of the Mac originating the request as "Network Drives" and can be fully manipulated with the Finder.

  • Upgrading a iMac G3 from OS9.2 to OSX. Firmware upgrade problem.

I am having trouble updating the firmware on my iMac G3 400mhz computer. I am running 9.2 but there seems to be a sleep problem. The computer shuts off, after holding the programmer's button, during start up. So, the 4.1.1 update doesn't take. As well as when trying to start the system up fresh the screen stays black and only when I manually innitiate sleep and start up again does the screen come back on. I am at a loss.

Now, here is what I did from the very beginning.
I replaced the battery, set the power management button, booted up the computer, the computer starts up in sleep mode ( Screen is off and won't come back on till I manually press the power button to put the system to sleep. I then press it again to wake it up, only then will the screen come back on). I then shut down the system to install the firmwarre update. I held down the programmers button, system tones then the computer shuts down before starting up. I then start it up again and the computer tones 2 times as if it were resetting the PRAM. After start up a message sayes that the firmware was not installed.
    I am getting rather confused.

  • How can I subscribe to a Shared Photo Stream from iPhoto 9.4 on OSX 10.7.5 ?

I just updated to iPhoto 9.4 on both my (just updated) OSX 10.8.2 MacBook Pro and my OSX 10.7.5 Mac mini.
For some mysterious reason Apple specifies that I can not subscribe to the new "Shared Photo Streams" from my OSX 10.7.5 Mac mini.
    How could that be ?
How can I get around this ?
How can it be that Apple claims that 'Shared Photo Streams' can be shared to all my other devices, but it turns out that my major photo-database can't, even though it has a brand new version of last year's OSX running... ???!!!
This can't be a software issue...
because if that were the case Apple would be deliberately cutting off users of last year's operating system... (...I even think there is a law prohibiting that...)
so... can anyone tell me what the exact piece of hardware is that I am missing ?
or has anyone found a solution for this yet ?
    Thanks !

The only hardware that's preventing me from upgrading to 10.8 "Mountain Lion" would be the fact that a Mid-2007 Mac mini doesn't have a separate graphics card...
...as all other hardware-components ar similar to the iMac Mid 2007... :
    - at least 2GB of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM RAM
    - a 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo "Merom" processor
    - a WiFi-N compatible AirPort-card (I've upgraded the one in my Mac mini to an Atheros AR-9280...)
    - OSX 10.6.8 or later installed (I have OSX 10.7.5)
    - iPhoto 9.4
...so the only spec I not meeting hardware-wise is the fact that my Mac mini has a GMA950 shared graphics card...
but surely... that can not be the reason I can't subscribe to a Photo Stream...
why would that have anything to do with eachother ???!!!
[ I've even seen claims of tricked OSX 10.8 installers for the Mid-2007 Mac mini, so if that's my only option... ]
