From G4 to Intel

Just got a new 20" iMAC (intel core 2 duo). It replaced an iMAC G4 (15". 800 Mhz). My question may seem dumb but will the same applications run on the new machine? Specifically, Final Cut Express (got it quite awhile back and put it on the G4), also have an app that was bundled with an Epson printer that I still have (Epson Print CD). I didn't migrate the old machine to the new, thought I'd just start out fresh so these apps are on the original discs.

  • Transfering from G5 to Intel iMac

Hi everyone. My first post here. I have a 20" G5 based iMac I have been using for a bit. I am about to upgrade to 24" Intel iMac. Since I started using OS X, transferring data from one to another has been simple, just attach a firewire cable and good to go.
However, now I am moving over from PPC to Intel, I am faced with either using that method or fresh install to take advantage of as much Intel based software as possible. Main programs I am worried about are MS Office X and Adobe CS3 Premium. I also paid for a bunch of shareware as well. I am fairly certain that when I do the transfer, program does not install the Intel version unless it's Universal. Do some programs tell you to upgrade to Intel version when you run the PPC version? Many questions...
So, what is your recommendation? Fresh install or transfer then individually figure out which ones replace? Thanks much in advance.

Hi, just to let you know, I transferred by saving everything but Apps on an ext HD. Then transfering to my new intel, Apps are best installed from the CD-rom. Shareware Apps, go onto the site and re download, you should have the "key" backed up in your computer.
I used this method for Image Tricks and a bunch of others...In real estate the motto is, Location, Location, Location, with computers it's Back Up, Back Up, Back Up...L

  • Going from G4 to Intel

I am going from a G4 machine to a new macbook. Will my microsoft office 04' for Mac software work on the intel machine or do I need new software?

i know for a fact that office 04 will work on a macbook since it is the very version that i am using on both intel and ppc machines. so no, you dont need new software. but it is highly recommended that when switching from ppc to intel that you reinstall things like office and any other third party software just incase they have an intel native version mainly because ppc versions will use more ram because they also require the use of a program called rosetta to run them on intel.

  • TM and Migrating from G5 to Intel RAID Mac.

The good news: I have a new Mac Intel Pro and all my previous G5's data is backed up by Time Machine to a fast Newr Tech FW RAID.
    The funky news:
    1. I'd read a User Tip Contribution by Kappy that suggested how to migrate from a Motorola -based system to the new Intel. It seemed that Migration Assistant is not useful here, much less via Time Machine. True? (while I can no longer find this tip, I have a Web Archive of it)
    2. Also, I've read here that I cannot continue using my old Time Machine backup account on the new Intel Mac. I'll have to wait while TM backs up up my new Mac entirely to a new TM account. I only have 300 GB left on my TM backup drive. Will I lose my G5's data when I add my Time Machine/FW disk to the new Intel. How, then, can I access my old data? If I can access my old data, must I retain my Username from my previous G5's accounts to be able to access TM backup data from my old Mac?
    3. Another variable: I got three ATA disks and an Apple RAID card for the new Intel Mac. I assume that setting up the array will be the first task when booting my Intel Mac for the first time, yes? I'm also guessing that I would want my OS/Apps on one disk, and a RAID array from the remaining two for files, as in OS9 days when one couldn't install an OS on a RAID disk, yes? Does this suggest that all my Home directory's files, such as Documents, Movies, Music, etc. should be aliased to the RAID array disks, to keep the Apps on non-RAID, files on RAID discrete?
    4. I gather I'll have to re-install all my 3rd Party software: Adobe CS3, Intel -compatible games, Final Cut Pro, Toast, etc. instead of using TM. Wow, no wonder I've been putting off setting up my new Mac.
    All advice is welcome.

the fact that you'd be migrating from TM backup is irrelevant here. the fact that you'd be migrating from PPC to intel is relevant. You can try doing that but there may be problems. definitely do not migrate applications.

    yes

I would suggest you use a different disk or reformat the existing one. You should format TM disk with GUID partition map for intel TM backups and yours is most likely formatted with Apple partition Map.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550?viewlocale=en_US
You can try using the old TM disk but you might run into problems later. if you do use the old drive TM should give you an option of keeping the stuff already on the drive so that you can ahve your old TM backups there too.
How, then, can I access my old data? If I can access my old data, must I retain my Username from my previous G5's accounts to be able to access TM backup data from my old Mac?
not username but userid. It's most likely 501 in both cases so that should not be a problem.

  • Migation from G4 to Intel Mini

I trying to use Migration Assistant to get from an older g4 tower to a early 2009 Intel Mini. I can't seem to get Migration Assistant to work properly. I have tried pulling everything over - but Migration Assistant hung up when it got to "a minute" to go. I tried 3-4 times, same thing.
I have tried using Migration Assistant to pull only one of two accounts from the old G4, I have tried NOT pulling over network setting - and when I could get it to work, it seems the Mail setting are not working. (No old mail, though I could see it in the home folder for that account.)
I am sure there is something basic I am missing here. I did this same thing two years ago moving from a Dual G4 (10.4) to a MacPro (10.5) and didn't have nearly this much trouble. I think there is something basic I am leaving out of the equation but, now I feel I have been looking at it too long to see what is going wrong.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks - Rob

"Sig - thanks, I have seen this link before. So, are you (and the linked info) saying "don't use Migration Assistant?"
    Yes.
"The part I don't get is I had such a good experience with it when I migrated my Dual Processor Mirror Door G4 to a MacPro two years ago."
You got lucky or problems didn't surface. The problem with Migration Assistant from PPC to intel is bringing over PPC system files that can gum up the works now or at a later date. If you follow the article it's really no big deal following it. I have used it going from an intel to an intel MBP as well. All I have left is installing my third party programs.

  • HT1531 Can you change the processor from PowerPC to Intel?

Can you change the processor from PowerPC to Intel?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It's not possible. Intel-based Macs use completely different logic boards than PowerPC-based Macs because chips are different (Intel-based Macs use EFI instead of Open Firmware, or PRAM instead of NVRAM), so if you want a Intel processor on your computer, you need a new iMac

  • Easy moving from PowerPC to Intel

    Hi,
I've a plan to change Leopard Server from PowerPC to Intel.
Give me any ideas for easy moving? especially Blogs , MySQL, Mail data.
    thanks in advance.
    tac

You definitely can't drag and drop them. Adobe has all sorts of stuff sprayed all over the place.
    So do a reinstall.
Also IMPORTANT... remember to de-activate it on your old machine if you don't intend to continue using it there. You get 2 activations total... if you go over that you'll have to call Adobe to get them to help you manage the activations... so be sure to deactivate before you, say, re-format the old machine.

  • 9.1.1 moving library from g5 to intel - gapless playback again

I just upgraded to 9.1.1 (12). Now when I move my itunes library from the g5 to the intel macpro it is "Determining gapless playback information".
I have two copies of my library on two macs. One intel the other g5. The g5 is my "master" copy. I sync the two using rsync.
It looks like every time I copy the library from g5 to intel it has to redetermin gapless playback. It's a pain, because it takes awhile, and I do like to keep my two libraries the same. For now I'm just hitting cancel.
Is anybody else having this problem? Maybe it is a new bug/feature?
Any ideas how to stop it?

setting up a 2011 intel imac 10.6.8 from an 2006 intel imac 10.4.11

I am not sure if my  last post was actually posted.
In short, use Migration Assistant (MA) this is located in Applications - Utilities - MA on the 2011 machine. Then connect either the bootable clone backup EHD you created on the 2006 to the 2011 iMac and follow MA's on screen instrucitons. If you did not have a bootable clone backup then connect either a FireWire to Firewire cable between the two computers or a Firewire to Firewire 800 cable and run MA from the 2011 and follow the on-screen instructions. • I want to remove the VMware from my iMac intel will this remove the wind7 also cleanly ?

Hi, I know where to go uninstall the VMware (fusion),  im just concerned that if i remove VMware it wont remove the windows7 cleanly, I never actually use it, someone thought it would be a good idea for me at the time, as I was new to Mac, well I had no issues with getting along with mac I was among some of the first to have computers in the schools, things are very similar so I never required the use of it.
Also I'm wanting to know what happens to my VMware, as I didn't install it myself just wondering if I can  remove it from the trash and burn it to a cd ? for use at a later time, or would it be simpler and easy to just remove windows and leave the VMware Fusion installed,  if so how much room is VMware using. I would really like to claim back that extra memory for use with my iMac.
I Thought It would be best to ask some advice before I make a silly mistake. So any info regarding this matter would be helpful thanks

Thank you for that, i am intending to upgrade my memory but not till end of month, So what your saying is to remove the windows from the VMware and if thats the case may I ask how i would do that. Sorry I just dont want to make a mistake and regret it later. Thanks for your help and advice Samberl awesome

  • Mail Backup from PPC to Intel question

Is it safe to assume the ~\Library\Mail and ~\Library\Prefs\com.apple.mail.plist
files can be moved from a PPC Mac to an Intel mac with out problems.
    Both machines are running 10.4.7
I did read this thread prior to posting:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2208609&#2208609

While I didn't dump in my preference files willy nilly, I did transfer many of them from my desktop to my mini - among them Mail. I experienced no problems.

  • Migrating from G5 to Intel Mac Mini

I have an old dual G5 2GHz, running OSX 10.5.8 with:
    + old Apple 23" Cinema Display (1920x1200)
    + HP L2065 LCD display (1600x1200)
+ 2x 500GB internal hard disks and lots of PPC Applications.
    + 2x External Firewire 400 disks.
I am going to buy a new Mac Mini 2.5GHz i5, runningOSX 10.7 with 8GB RAM and 750GB hard disk.
How well will the Migration Assistant perform for me?
    1. iTunes library on external 500Gb hard disk. Will the library XML etc be migrated automatically?
    2. Old PPC applications, will it make a list of those that won't work on the Mini?
    3. Preferences, settings and other data usable (?) for Intel versions of software I will need to upgrade
    4. Both machines have FireWire 800 ports, so I will need to buy one FW800 cable, right?
    5. Are there FW800 cables that will run FW400 drives?
    6. Does anyone know the actual performance of any Thunderbolt hard disks with the Mac Mini 2.5GHz i5 ?
Is the Mac Mini itself slower than (forthcoming) Thunderbolt hard disks?
    7. Will I need to buy any cables to run the two monitors?
    8. Anything else I missed?
    Thanks!

I just did this.....and at first it was a disaster.  My new Mac Mini server with a 250GB SSD and 750GB HD was runnin' at light speed under Lion, I had installed MS Office 2011 and Photoshop Elements from the app store.....all was great.
Then I tired to use the migration assistant on the Mini to transfer stuff from the G5 that I started up in firewire target disk mode. Ran for hours (mostly overnight) transferring apps (which I mistakenly thought that the migrations assistant would purge of non-lion compatible stuff) and then after re-start the mini would have kernal panics about every 30-90 seconds.
Had to restore the system over the internet, again a long process, but now all is fine again.  And the Mini screams, once you get through this you will love the new machine.   Again, I stated the G5 in firewire disk mode and this time only transferred the contents of my user folders to some new folders on the mini.
But basically what I learned the hard way is that pretty much no apps will transfer, and that the migration assistant is pretty dumb.  I've heard they've updated the migration assistant for Leapord (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1434  you would use this on the G5) and maybe this will help, but for my money the basic info is that your files will transfer, and that your apps and app realted things won't.  And for that I don't need a migration assistant.....
I did copy my itunes libraries (manually) and they work fine on my mini, anlong with all my mailboxes too, and iPhoto libraries, etc.  It was a little work, but I did it manually.
I connected the mini to my G5 with one FW800 cable.  And yes you'll need an adapter or a FW400 to FW800 cable (basically the adapter is in the cable) to use FW400 stuff.

  • Migrating from a 20" Intel iMac to a 24"... any gotcha's?

I want to buy a new 24" iMac, mainly for the increased speed and Firewire 800 port. I have to make the switch from one machine to the other quickly. A few questions...
Any know problems moving 3rd party app's using the Migration Assistant? How about with Apple app's such as FCS, iTunes (actually iTunes was hosed during the last upgrade so this isn't critical). Microsoft locks certain programs to the CPU S/N and system configuration in a Windows environment; same true on the iMac? After the migration, what's left on the source (20") computer; i.e. when the Migration Assistant moves programs to the new computer does it delete them from the old computer? I plan to sue my existing 20" Cinema display as the 2nd monitor with the 24" iMac. Any scaling problems? Basically, are there any gotcha's I should be aware of before spending all that money?
(This is my second posting of these questions. The original seems to have disappeared. If this ends up being a duplicate, my apologies.)
 20" Intel iMac + Cinema Display + Sony HDR-HC7 HD camera   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   All tools, no talent!

I simply took the FW400 HDD containing my most recent backup of my old computer, connected it to the new computer, booted to this drive, then did a 'backup' from from it to the internal HDD of the new computer. Once completed, I booted to the new computer and the job was done.
Interesting... when I tried Apple's approach I also got stuck around 6 hours into the process. I tried twice and finally gave up. The SuperDuper approach was fast and worked the first time I tried it. I should add the SuperDuper folks told me this wouldn't work, but I figured, worst case, I'd have to rebuild the new computer's boot drive from the supplied disks. Fortunately this wasn't necessary.

  • Can't Migrate from G4 to Intel Mac Mini

    Hi
I have been unable to migrate files from my old G4 destop to my new Intel Mac mini. I wonder if anyone could help.
I first tried first using the migration assistant on the Mac mini and used the G4 as a fire wire drive. Failed twice, the process froze both times.
Erased Intel Mac mini and tried to do a restore from G4 using Disk Utilty. Failed twice. Didn't complete process.
I then tried the same twice using Supe Duper. Completed process (took hours) but in both cases couldn't boot Mac mini. Get the folder icon on boot indicating can't find system (I think).
I though I would then clean re-install system files from restore disks that came with MIni mac and start a fresh, but won't allow me to do this !! Spent two days and no further forward.
    Any suggestions ?
Would erasing Mac mini and and trying Carbon Copy Cloner work ?
Can I add files manually from G4 to mac mini ?
    Thanks in advance.
G4 ibook. G4 desktop, mac mini (intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Exactly which model G4 tower do you have? The
PCI-graphics G4 towers do not support FireWire Target
    Disk Mode.
If FWTDM works, have you replaced the hard drive that
came with the G4? Technically, Apple claims FWTDM
will only work with the OEM (original) hard drive
that came with the G4 tower. If you've replaced it or
added a second drive, it might not work correctly in
    "target" mode.
If you do have a new hard drive, you should be able
to put it into a FireWire (or USB) external hard
drive case and use the Migration/Setup Assistant to
    copy your files over.
If you're still having trouble, you can copy your
files over manually. Do you know which files you're
interested in copying? If your G4 tower works in
"target" mode, but the Migration/Setup Assistant is
having trouble, you can usually just drag all the
files and folders from your user's old home folder to
the new folders on the new computer. (Macintosh
    HD/Users/YourUserName/Pictures > NewMacintosh
    HD/Users/YourUserName/Pictures)
    -Doug
Yes I did change the hard drive to a bigger one so that may be the problem.
When I use the Traget mode I do see my "old" drive (both partitions) on my desktop so it suggests firewire is working.
Won't take everything across including applications, library etc.
Will let you know how I get on.
Thank you for your time. Geatly appreciated.

  • Can't transfer files from imac to intel imac via ethernet sockets

I recently bought the fab new imac intel and wanted to transfer files from my old imac 350 via the ethernet sockets as the old imac doesn't have firewire. I did this using instructions from an apple doc. which allowed me to simply drag files from the hard disk icon of my old imac, to the hard disk icon of the imac intel.
I now want to transfer some more files but the set-up just doesn't work. When I try to connect to the old imac the afp tries to find the IP but doesn't connect. Sometimes I get a message saying, 'the files you want are on this server' meaning the new intel imac, but of course they are not. I've tried all kinds of things but can't find the problem.
    Geoff

If the ip addresses are beginning with 169 that means they are self assigned ip addresses.
I suggest you goto each mac and create a new network location.
Then setup one mac as follows
    systempreferences-->network-->show built-in ethernet-->TCP/IP
    configure ipv4 manually
    ip address 10.0.0.1
    subnet 255.255.255.0
on the other mac do the same but make the ip address
    10.0.0.2
    press apply now.
Now when you connect to server use the ip address 10.0.0.1 or 10.0.0.2 respectively.
