  • Problem when upgrading from Gnome 3.0 to 3.2 [SOLVED]

    Hi,
I've been fighting for 2 days trying to fix this problem: after having upgraded from Gnome 3.0 to 3.2, I can't login anymore (I have this message telling me that something wrong happened and I should try again).
    Here is what I tried:
    - Removing ~/.config ~/.gconf and ~/.gnome2
    - Connecting with a fresh new user
    - Reinstalling gnome-shell
    - pacman -S cogl
    - http://justin.jetfive.com/gnome-32-arch … in-problem
    But unfortunately it didn't help...
Here is the output of my ~/.xsessions-errors : http://pastebin.com/4dbMFDsY
    [FYI I'm also running xfce4.8]
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem when I did the upgrade the very same day of the release. And the solution for me was to login using my battery. For some reason, GDM won't let me in if I'm plugged (I know it sounds crazy, but it works for me)
    Best of luck

  • GDM does not appear back after logging out from Gnome.

    Hello,
I am tryingout Archlinux for the first time. I am able to goto run level 5 and after booting I get the GDM login screen. I can log in to Gnome. But when I log out from Gnome, GDM does not appear, but I get a black screen. Then, the only way to come out is to press the reset button.
    What may be the problem?
    Thanks for your help.
    Anand

it may depend on how ur running gdm, (possibly with -*no-daemon option) .. in which case it'd prolly werk if u removed it...
although i'd recommend using rc.conf instead as it's a lot cleaner...
    to use /etc/rc.conf
    add gdm to the DAEMONS;
    mine = "DAEMONS=(gdm @syslog-ng @network @alsa @httpd)"
that starts gdm(in daemon mode), then starts syslog-ng,net*,alsa and apache in the background .. save me about 6 seconds when i background em.
then you need to change the default runlevel in /etc/inittab to 3 (not 5)

    box-shadow: 0 0 0 black; /* removes shadow completely */
    border-style: none;

As for myself, I am using Openbox as wm, Numix as theme and the rest are the xfce environemnt. The effects are all disabled, which results in these black borders in the first place. If you use tiling wm and keyboard only, set the margin to 0 for zero frame and maximum.. content.

  • Does Adobe Reader plugin work in Firefox 11 if launched from Gnome?

Sorry to cross post, but I couldn't figure out how to move my post from the "Adobe Reader" forum to the "Adobe Reader for Unix" forum.
If I launch Firefox (version 11) from the command line (Linux shell), then I can open a PDF with the Adobe Reader plugin.  But if I launch Firefox from the desktop or panel in Gnome, I get the message "Could not launch Adobe Reader 9.1.0. Please make sure it exists in PATH variable in the environment.  If the problem persists, please reinstall the application."
acroread is in the PATH variable - I checked ("which acroread" and "echo $PATH")
We are using acroread 9.3.2.  We tried updating to the latest acroread 9.4.something ...? but the SendMail option was missing from Edit->Preferences, so we reverted to 9.3.2.
We are using Debian Linux 5.0.8.
It is very convenient and user-friendly in our library for visitors to be able to view a PDF in the browser (with the plugin) and to be able to just click on the envelope icon from there to send a PDF.
This was working fine until we upgraded to Adobe Reader 9.4.  We reverted to 9.3.2, and everything was working fine again.  Then our systems people did some things, including updating Mozilla Firefox from version 3.6.13 to version 11.  Then the plugin stopped working from the Gnome launch panel.  I tried running the old Firefox 3.6.13 from the Gnome launch panel, but the plugin no longer works in it, either.
    Has anyone had this problem?
Sometimes running Firefox from the command line gives some errors.  I tried various versions of nppdf.so and tried toggling the about:config variable "dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.nppdf.so" but nothing changed.

I have the same or a very similar issue on WIn7 64bit

  • [SOLVED] Random logout from Gnome 3

    Hi all,
For about a week now I have been experiencing random logouts while running Gnome 3. I can't find any connection with what I am doing at the time except *maybe* that the computer is under load (numerical simulations, sometimes running into Swap space). I found a few other posts saying it might be a Xorg server crash, so am posting the text from Xorg.0.log.old.
It seems there might be a problem with my nvidia driver... anyone have any experience with this?

Well, I can't say whether your logouts are caused by the nvidia driver, but there' s a way to figure that out - switch to Nouveau. Just for diagnostic purposes, you don't have to keep using it after you solve this, but the proprietary nvidia driver is giving trouble quite a few people, so I think it might be worth a shot.

  • Can't start GParted from gnome-menu

Hi, I have a problem with GParted.
I know that it worked fine some weeks ago.
But now it doesn't start from the gnome-menu.
The strange thing is: if I copy the same command as in the menu ('gksu /usr/sbin/gparted %f') in the terminal Gparted starts.
Maybe this problem is since the sudo or a gparted upgrade.
    What could be wrong?

In my Xfce4 installation, it's /usr/share/applications/GParted, which I copied over to ~/.local/share/applications/, as kaixi suggested, and it appeared there as gparted.desktop.  Right-click for Properties > Launcher > Command, and in that field (not wanting to install gksu) I put sudo gparted, which works, thanks.

  • Right-click "Browse Folder" removed from Gnome?

The latest gnome has removed my favorite option "Browse Folder" from the right-click (context) menu.  Anyone know how to get it back?  The old menu used to have Open first followed by Browse Folder.  Now we only have "Open".

The right-click functionality is something that is unique to Captivate. Adobe probably implemented some clever solution so that if you right-click a Captivate generated swf it won't bring up the normal flash right click menu but instead look for right-click interaction in your project.
If you load a Captivate swf into Presenter (or any other shell) it is no longer the Captivate generated swf that will "receive" the right-click from the user since this is loaded into a shell. The Presenter swf would be the one receiving the right-click and since it doesn't have the right-click functionality from Captivate it will just present the regular Flash right click menu.
I doubt that there is any way to circumvent this when you are loading your Captivate project into a shell unfortunately.

  • Excluding packages from Gnome installation

    Hello to all,
I have a fresh Arch Linux with Xorg installed. I want to install Gnome but not the entire Gnome applications universe... The Arch Wiki says that after you issue "pacman -S gnome" you will be given a list of packages AND the option to exclude some of them from the installation. But this is not the case... What you get is a simple y/n prompt. By selecting "no" the installation is aborted. By selecting "yes" the whole gnome meta-package is installed. I'm assuming the same thing will happen with "pacman -S gnome-extras" ?
Is there any workaround? I don't want to be removing one-by-one all the unneeded software, like with opensuse or ubuntu.
    Thanks in advance

  • Cannot print from gnome apps [solved while writing]

I have a most annoying problem. First of all gnome-cups-manager does not show any of the printer drivers I have installed. It does detect a printer that is attached to the computer, but when proceeding to choose driver, it finds nothing.
This problem is not that big a deal, since cups has a marvellous web interface that I'm using instead to add various printers.
The printers I've added work just fine from, say, firefox, openoffice and some other apps. But every and any application using the gnome print interface (e.g. epiphany, f-spot, evince, etc.) fail to show the printers. All they show is "Generic Postscript" and "Create a PDF Document".
EDIT: While writing this topic, I was recompiling libgnomeprint without disabling the cups module (which the official PKGBUILD does), and it works now. I don't know why libgnomeprint is compiled without support for cups. Weird if you ask me.
I'm posting this topic anyway, in case anyone else is having the same problem.

    Ah, this explains it: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … print+cups
