From huge QT to data DVD- what works best

The family history is at stake. And my sanity. The entire family home movie/video collection got put on a portable hard drive. Big QT files, 20-30GB. My job: burn them onto data DVDs so a couple of us can edit sections. Not QT movies, data. What is the most efficient way to do this? I import a big file. Create a bunch of 10 minute sequences. Export as standalone QT movies. Each one takes over two hours. What? Correct me if I am wrong but if I had captured this video instead of importing, I could just burn the capture scratch files. Importing is different, there is no capture scratch folder? Sorry, this don’t add up. Someone smarter than me must have figured this out. I’d appreciate knowing how you would do it cause I am lost. Thanks.

Hello Distal -- sorry if I am a bit confused by what you wrote, but if you are just trying to get the files to other folks so you can edit different parts, you can either:
1) Just give the portable hard disk to the other guys to copy the files onto their Macs, and give the disk back to you
2) Burn "Spanned DVDs" using something like Toast Titanium (use Mac-only format to enable disc spanning) in lieu of giving the hard disk to other people; this may take 10 DVDs (for up to 47 GB approx.)
(The reason I am confused is because it seems as if your data is ALREADY on your hard disk, irrespective of whether or not you need to grab files from some capture/scratch folder, etc.).

  • Web export settings from FCXpress? What works best?

    Hey there all who are willing to help!
    I am making a video blog for my family through the holidays and am shooting the videos with iMovie '06's iSight video capture. Doing this, I have found, saves the video as .mov files which I then import into FCXpress and begin editing. I am only limiting the videos to a 4 min limit but they tend to come out either too big a file size (I'm shooting for 13MB tops) or too choppy for my satisfaction no matter what setting I use. I have settled for the preset Broadband- Medium but have been unhappy with the 320x240 resolution. I prefer a bigger res but every time I adjust it the file size, of course, hops up numerically too.
    I understand iSight's .mov files are only containers for the actual codec: Apple Photo - JPEG, in a 640x480 res.
    What have you used? What works best?
    -How do movie companies make 2-minute trailers in AMAZING quality? H.264? What else?

    One reason professional companies produce high quality video is because they don't shoot it with an iSight camera.
    Another is that they don't limit the size to 320x240.
    Broadband High is the minimum quality you should be using, and if you want reasonable results you will have to accept larger file sizes.

  • I want to produce wedding dvds.whats the best software to use...final cut x I'm thinking but what about the quality of the dvd?

    i want to produce wedding dvds.whats the best software to use...final cut x I'm thinking but what about the quality of the dvd? Can i use idvd?

    The only Programms I worked with are DVD Studio Pro and iDVD. You can burn a Video-DVD with Toast but  there is no real option to design your Menu. Just a few themes as far as I discovered.
    Do you have a Blue Ray Device to burn* the HD-DVD? Are the Bride and Groom able to watch the Blue Ray?
    * which is only possible with DVD Studio Pro and not iMovie as far as I know.
    This might help
    For better quality I would go the Compressor & DVD Studio Pro workflow I just learned.
    Export the Movie as is from Final Cut Pro and then use Compressor to encode the File.
    Consider delivering the Movie in a different way like a private video on vimeo, a Website or on an SD card which is not really romantic...

  • What works best with which?

    Hi All.
    I have a problem with Compressor and ive been scouring the many many posts on failure to batch and failure to open. I have done all of the reinstalls except my OS, which im reluctant to do. What seems to work for other eludes me still. I wonder still if this spec has something missing as i dont have any idea what works best. I have the ProApps update so my thinking is this should all be current and workable.
    At the moment compressor does not repsond to clicking in the dock or the finder.
    FCP 5.0.4
    Qmaster 2.3
    OS 10.3.9
    Compressor 2.3
    Any ideas?

    Hi Karsten et al.
    I have a problem that I am desperate for any kind of feedback from. Can you help?
    Last week I bought a Sony DCR-SR90 HDD camcorder, thinking it would be simple to pull files from this hard drive camcorder straight into iMovie.
    However, there is only a USB connection, and the bundled software is for PCs only. I had to download an MPEG2 program from Apple (£14.99) just to be able to import the files and now it does so, but without sound. Moreover, the quality of the image is awful in the iMovie viewing window.
    I have a feeling that this Sony camcorder, though quite new, is not compatible with an Apple Powerbook and/or iMovie. This is disastrous as it cost £850 and I need it for my own wedding in September.
    My question is: is it worth taking this machine back to Jessops and getting a Mini-DV camcorder that is definitely compatible with Apple/iMovie, or is there a way to get this funky Sony camcorder to sync/work with a Mac?
    Second: if I exchange it for a different camcorder, which one should I get guys???!!! (it's vital that it works with iMovie as I like to make decent edited home movies with music, effects etc).
    Can you help???

  • Unsure what data structure will work best??

    okay heres the scenario
    i have 4 strings per element and i need to store these within a data structure, the number of elements is not to be fixed
    is it possible to store an array within an arraylist or vector?
    when i tried to implement the vector it seemed to work fine until i tried to display the element, heres my code
    Vector vectorDetails = new Vector();
    String[4] arrayDetails = new String(4);
    details[0] = nameText.getText();
    details[1] = nameText.getText();
    details[2] = nameText.getText();
    details[3] = nameText.getText();
    String[] s1 = (String)details.lastElement();
    String[] s2 = (String)details.firstElement();
    whenever i print s1 or s2 i get the same information, regardless of the amount of elements i have
    sorry i couldn't post more of the code, but its on the large size, but if anyone can help i would be much appreciated

    okay, now i am really confused, how did i get from a vector to a hashtable??
    to be honest i dont think that structure will work with my GUI
    the way it stands i have five buttons across the top, standard buttons, i.e. new, add, search, edit, delete
    at the bottom i have four buttons, firstElement, previousElement, nextElement, and lastElement
    in the center of the screen i have my textfields were i enter the details and also view each individual persons details, as such i will need access to each individual string
    at present i have two classes, EmailContactDatabase.java & Person.java so i will need to pass the persons details back and forth
    any further help would be much appreciated
    note this is a university assessment, so i am not looking for specific code, just some pointers to get me in the right direction
    note note the structure as i pointed out in an earlier post does NOT have to be dynamic, i can set the maximum number of elements.

  • How to extract "chapters" from a burned self-made DVD- what app?

    Hello again.
    I recently lost my external LaCie 250GB (it stopped working after power cable was pulled accidently) and with it ALL my daughter's older, original music MP4s and original iMovie files.
    Now- I DID make 5 DVDs of them BEFORE this happened but I would like to make more and incorporate the original 7 songs in this project. So- long story short: I need an application to "rip" my own work OFF the DVD to "reuse" on a new one.
    I realise I will lose quality but hey- beggars cannot be choosers.
    Does anyone know of a free or reasonably priced "ripping" software to let me extract from my home-made DVDs?
    Thank you.

    the unspokable MTR is a ripper.. it strips-off the copy protection of commercial DVDs.. absolutely NO need for homebrewn disks, and I really don't understand, why so many people 'recommend' that tool for a process, you simply accomplish with the Finder (non protected disk: drag'n drop onto harddrive... done)
    plus, a conversion from lossy mp2 (=DVD), to lossy mp4 (which most rippers support...), to lossy mp2 again (=new DVD)... that is beyond my horizon ... (??)
    for converting just parts of a DVD, the usual reply is the combo of Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free) .. it allows to set In- and Out-point in the DVD's content and converts straight into iM/iDVD 'native', internal format dv-stream...

  • Setting up workspace? What works best?

    What are some of the best ways to setup your workspace, and what makes for a good workspace in Logic? If possible please include a screen capture.

    Hi GMGNewton,
    I too dabble in producing my own dance tracks and I've found that once you become familiar with logics overview it's best to create a custom template of your set up as I end up going through the same sort of sequence most times which is time consuming starting from scratch.
    I tend to work with a lot of software instruments when writing rather than audio within logic so my template just now for starting off a project consists of:
    1 x Ultrabeat Stereo Track (With custom samples)
    4 x EXS24 Track (Percussion, Piano, Strings, Pads)
    3 x ES1 Track (Bass & 2 Spare)
    2 x ES2 Track (Synth Lead & 1 Spare)
    4 x Audio Track (Vocals, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, 1 x Spare)
    I only have the Ultrabeat track for laying down basic drum sequences then I will later put each drum sound onto separate tracks, usually as audio files (especially the kick).
    The Electric Guitar track has the Guitar Amp plugin inserted as although I have my own amp to record from via a mic, it's not that great so I favour the logic plug for this.
    That's pretty much the track count I start off with and gradually build a session up from there, which could add another 10 - 20 tracks, maybe even more.
    I only have an imac as my monitor so I use screen shots for changing views.
    1. Arrange
    2. Mixer
    3. Close up of Arrange
    I also colour my tracks so I can visually know whats going on:
    Drums/Percussion - Red
    Bass - Purple
    Keys - Brown
    Strings - Yellow
    Synths - Green
    Vocals - Male Blue, Female Pink
    Guitar - Depends what track is
    Hope this helps

  • Can't see all devices from one AccessPoint to another? What is best setup to extend wireless coverage?

    We have just moved into a new apartment with concrete walls, hence WiFi signal is quite weak in the other end of the apartment.  Not all devices can see each other depending on which AP i am associated to.
    Basically I want to have any wired/wireless devices be able to see my NAS/Office based components and keep the LivingRoom tidier.  Only device in LivingRoom will be ISP components and AppleTV.
    Some additional notes on current setup
    - LivingRoom has the ISP issued Router/AccessPoint
    - the ISP Router/AP is currently setup as a) AccessPoint b) DHCP server and c) default gateway to get to the Internet
    - LivingRoom AP SSID is 'LivingRoom'
    - DHCP pool is on the 192.168.1.0/24 range
    - Default GW is 192.168.1.254
    - in the LivingRoom i am also using the Router/AP ethernet ports for AppleTV
    - connected to the Router/AP is a long Ethernet cable to the other end of the apartment in the Office
    - on other end of the long Ethernet cable is an Airport Extreme in the Office on the WAN port
    - the AirportExtreme is setup in 'Bridge' mode
    - Connected to the Office_AirportExtreme is a) a NAS device physically in the Office via Ethernet cable b) WebCam in BedRoom2 via WiFi
    - Office_AirportExtreme SSID is 'Office'
    - all devices confirmed are assigned an IP from the LivingRoom Router/AccessPoint and on the 192.168.1.0 pool
    - at this time in only have WebCam and NAS however Plex and Desktop coming shortly as we are still unpacking
    Issue
    a) When my laptop is associated to SSID 'Office' i can see the NAS and WebCam; able to PING and hit via HTTP
    b) When my laptop is associated to SSID 'LivingRoom' i CANNOT see the NAS/WebCam;  I am unable to hit the two devices behind the Office_AirportExtreme via PING/HTTP and I am able to surf the Internet, however cannot see the NAS/WebCam
    Question
    a) is there some other config on the Office_AirportExtreme that must be done to disable any Firewall type capabilities that is limiting the ability for devices on other side of the Office_AirportExtreme from seeing the devices behing the Office_AirportExtreme?
    b) is this ideal config?
    c) is it typical to have different SSID?  would like to get to just single SSID for the apt, however not sure if there will be conflict i'm not aware of.
    Totally open to any suggestions on others that have done this before to avoid reinventing the wheel...
    See pic below...
    Thx -Ray

    Note that after additional poking around and disabling Wi-Fi all together confirmed that when wired to either the ISP Router/AP or the Office_AE, i am able to see both NAS and WebCam behind the Office_AE.
    The issue seems to be with the ISP Router/AP where by there is a difference in behavior when connected via Wi-Fi vs Wired.  All is well with the AirportExtreme from what i can gather.
    i'm just going to pickup a separate Wi-Fi access point to provide coverage for the LivingRoom area instead of trying to figure this out further.
    FYI.  I am in Singapore using SingTel Fiber service and the ISP Router/AP i am using is Aztech DSL7000GRV(S)

  • Video to dvd what is best product to use/buy?

    Hi,
    I have many hours of videos of my kids which I would like to convert to dvd.
    What is the simplest products to buy for this and what exactly would I need to undertake this.Or would it be better to buy a more expensive product to achieve best results?
    Thanks

    I was referring to Elgato, because they offer the best solutions in my opinion. At http://www.elgato.com/elgato/int/mainmenu/products/tuner.en.html you can select what you want to do. In your case it suggests the 250 plus or the hybrid. The first one says this in its description:
    VHS Assistant to convert videotapes to DVDs
    Looks like a hassle-free way to me and I've only heard good things about it so far.

  • MICR character spacing, what works best?

    We're having issues with MICR spacing on our XML publisher based cheques in Oracle 11i. Basically our spacing changes from our desktop to our linux server so the MICR positioning is imprecise when it gets converted to PDF. So I'd love to know what other people are doing regarding MICR positioning. Are you;
    - Making it one bring string in a cell?
    - Breaking it up into it's components in different cells, i.e. Serial Number, Transit Number, Account Number etc
    - Making up a table with cells for each single digit of the MICR String?
    To give you some more details, the template is in RTF format.
    I'd appreciate your ideas.
    Cheers
    Kofi

    The whole reason for using a relative unit, like ems, for tracking and kerning is it adjusts as you change the size of the type to maintain the specified spacing. If you switch to an absolute unit and adjust the type size your glyphs will either drift apart or pile up on each other.
    And I don't think anyone here can even begin to tell you how you might accomplish such a feat in your custom GUI.

  • Design Question:  huge column is slowing app, what's best way to speedup?

    Hello All,
    I have a DPL application that is getting a bit heavy due to one column and needs to be tweaked and wanted to ask people's advice on the best practice to speeding it up. I have an entity that is tracking versions of statistical data.
    @Entity
    public class ResourceVersion {
         @PrimaryKey(sequence = "resource_sequence")
         @XmlAttribute
         private Long id; //internal primary key
         private byte[] data; //the field slowing everything down.
         @SecondaryKey(relate=Relationship.MANY_TO_ONE)
         private String resourceId; //externally visible key.
         private String name; //field that's actually needed.
         //2 more fields that aren't relevant to example.
         //some getters and setters.
    The byte[] data field can be several megabytes and is making the application slow as my DAO layer is processing a few megabytes of data and then discarding them for the web layer.
    To abstract the problem:
    * I have a CRUD application with a single entity.
    * My page that lists the entities is getting slow.
    * I have a bean with 6 fields.
    * I need 3 of the fields for the page that's listing the entities. The other 3 are only used by a tiny subset of the application.
    I need to stop retrieving the large data field for pages that don't need it. I need a subset of my bean.
    The way I see it, I have 2 options:
    1. Figure out a way using the DPL to retrieve a subset of the fields. Is it even possible?
    2. Break the bean into 2, one containing the fields needed for listing and one bean that just stores the data.
    My assumption is that I have to break the byte[] field into it's own entity. I thought I'd just quickly post to make sure there's not an easier option.
    Thanks,
    Steven

    Hi Steven,
    You're correct that BDB does not support partial record read/write, and therefore the best solution is to break the large blob out into a separate entity (or even store it in a file).
    See:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/berkeley-db/faq/je_faq.html#3
    Partial data is not supported at all for the DPL, but as noted in the FAQ the limited support for it in the base API provides very little performance advantage, if any at all.

  • ITunes fails when backing up Data DVD on disc 2

    Hi,
    I have 4500 songs and each track has a working album cover. When I start the Burn to Disc session and choose Data DVD, it works fine until disc #2, then it fails and iTunes closes...every time.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Shad

    I figured the problem out. iTunes doesn't isn't quality software when it comes to backing up large (40gb+) libraries of music. The only way around this incompetence is to not "hickup" during the process of backing up your library to data dvd's. Don't play music. Don't minimize iTunes. Don't touch your computer. Turn off your screen savers, messengers and all other programs while backing your library up.
    I figured that out after wasting about 15 DVD's 25-minutes per dvd) over 5 days.

  • How to avoid the House Bank when creating a vendor from the HR master data?

    Hi all,
    I am using T-code PRAA in order to generate the vendors from the HR master data.
    It works fine, but the programs tries to record a House Bank in the company code view of the vendor.
    Which I don't want.
    Does anyone know how to get rid of the house bank ?
    I already tried, by deleting the entry in the characteristic TRVHB, through PE03, but then, the file is not generated successfully.

    Hi Madhuri,
    Best way to avoid such problem is to use TAB delimited file instead of comma separated data. Generally TAB does not appear in data.
    If you are generating the file, use tab instead of comma.
    If you cannot modify the format of file and data length in file is fixed character, you will need to define the structure and then move data in fixed length structure.
