From iBook to MacBook, from '06 to '08: A big leap indeed!

I currently have an iBook. I have just purchased a new MacBook. I created a site using iWeb '06,
and I need to:
(1) transfer the website from iBook to MacBook
(2) and go from '06 to '08.
How does one transfer a site from one computer to another? (Even if you copy the contents of your "sites" folder, iWeb doesn't create it, I've found when I tried to transfer from one user account to another.)
And will there be any problems going from '06 to '08?

Hi xharris,
1) Have a look at the following page about transferring the website from one computer to the other
http://alyeska.altervista.org/en/iWebTransferSite.html
(also read Note 1 of that page!)
2) Be sure to update iWeb '08 to the latest version (2.0.3). Then double-click the domain file you transferred and iWeb will launch and prompt you to update the domain file to version 2.
The problems some people experience are that some objects might move and not be in the right place anymore or things like that. Just have a look at it once you opened it in iweb '08 before publishing it to the web.
Also make a Backup of the Domain file before- after- you updated and from time to time

  • Internet Connect ported over from from iBook to MacBook not working

I recently bought a MacBook to replace my iBook. Not wanting to bring everything over I chose not to use the migration assistant and opted to bring certain files and programs over via firewire target mode. One of my choices was to bring over Internet Connect since I thought that would bring over my VPN settings. I think, however, the G4 version may not be entirely compatible with the intel/universal aspects of my new and already beloved MacBook.
I can connect to the Internet without problem but when I open Internet Connect I get no signal strength indication, the base station ID is not available, checking the box to show the Airport status in the menu bar does not place the status in the menu bar (it shows up fine in the iBook and my iMac G5). The summary tab just gives me Airport link status not available but does indicate how long my current connectivity to the Internet has lasted.
Is there any fix or reinstallation for Internet Connect possible? Thanks.
iMac G5 and iBook G4 and now MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

No part of the operating system from your G4 iBook is compatible with a new Intel MacBook.
You will have to replace any system files that you "brought over" from the G4 from the MacBook Installation DVD. The iBook is not Universal Binaries. That's why it is not working.
If you don't wanna use the migration, then you'll probably have to set up your VPN settings manually again.

  • Migrating from iBook to MacBook Pro

Unable to access my pictures, music and documents folders that I migrated from my iBook. It tells me that I have insufficient access privileges. I haven't been able to figure out how to deal with that.
    Does anyone have any suggestions

Are the folders in the right place (ie, under your own user folder)? If so, you can fix the permissions on them by highlighting the folders, clicking cmd-i to open Get Info, and going to the Permissions tab, setting yourself as owner, with read/write permissions. You should also click "Apply to enclosed items".
Or, did the migration create a new user with those folders? If so, you can log in as that user and copy the folders first to the Shared folder, then log in as your other user and copy them to the correct places - and then correct the permissions as before.

  • Can't send email from iBook but can from iMac

I have a iMac hardwired to the Internet with Leopard. I also have a Powerbook with Leopard and a iBook with the previous operating system. My hardwired iMac is the only computer that can send email through the my smtp server for work. It is offsite and not supported by me.
I have changed all port settings on the two laptops but no success. I have even synced all of the accounts through .Mac and only the hardwired iMac can send emails. They all are able to received emails.
I am able to select a new smtp server when the Mail program on the laptops tell me it has not been able to connect. I can then send the messages out through gmail, but they come from my Gmail account. This is no good when I am trying to conduct business.
I have also hardwired my iBook to the same network my iMac is connected too (same wire) and the iBook still cannot connect to the selected smtp server (I did turn the airport off).
Any one got any ideas or thoughts?? Can I create a SMTP server on these laptops some how? I was beginning to think it was an Airport communication issue, but after hardwiring the ibook and it still did not work, I am at a loss.

Are you using the Verizon PW or the Google one?

  • Migrating from iBook G4 to MacBook Pro -helpful experiences?

    Hi everyone
I'm switching to a MacBook Pro and would welcome the voice of experience from people who have made a similar switch from an iBook. This morning I went into my local Apple Store to ask advice and the guy I spoke to was really uncertain and suggested that I pay £79 (or whatver it is) to joing One to One and let the Apple store do it. However, I'm sure that there must be an easier (and cheaper) was to accomplish what I need - which is to basically transfer files, music, photos, email, accounts, and settings to the MBP.
I would love to hear from anyone who has achieved this with as much detail as you can spare about how you did this.
    Many thanks

I did it three years ago, switching from a G4 to an Intel-based MBP. I have a couple of suggestions:
    1. Cloning your hard drive won't work as such, because the G4's OS won't boot on the Intel machine. What some have done, though, is to clone and then re-install OS 10.5 on the new machine. While that may work, it will most likely also result in your having some applications on the machine that won't work and may cause mischief.
    2. Migration Assistant/Setup Assistant should work fine. Firewire is not required -- you can use Ethernet (speed is dependent somewhat on cable quality) direct connection between the two machines, or Firewire 800, or (if you are very patient) wireless networking for the transfers. If your old machine has an older version of the OS, you may have to upgrade it first for this routine to work properly. If you use Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, be prepared for some potential confusion over computer names and user names. A number of people (including me) have "lost" their home directory contents as a result of this. (If it isn't where you expect it, look for a new user created by the process and log in there.)
    3. The most conservative approach (and in some ways the easiest) is to use an external drive or other media to copy your home directory from the old system to the new one, and then reinstall applications from original media or from the web.
    4. Don't forget to update your OS at some point -- new hardware doesn't always come with the latest SW changes.
    Good luck.

  • Upgrading to Macbook from Ibook - software conflict?

    Hi,
I'd like to mirror my current system and sofware across to the a new-to-me Macbook.
How can I do it - if indeed it's possible? Ideally, I'd like to burn a disc image of my entire machine and copy that across somehow.
    thanks

To build a little on what Michael just said. You simply can't do it. While the OS for your iBook looks pretty much the same as it does on the new MacBooks (or any new Intel based machine), it is very different under the hood. The version of OS X that you have on your iBook "speaks" PowerPC. It wouldn't have the slightest idea what to do with an Intel processor. You can move your personal documents and applications over, but you can't simply move over an entire image.

  • How to transfer iBooks books & PDFs from old iPad to new iPad?

(Well, it seems my title got truncated; originally it read: How to transfer iBooks books & PDFs from old iPad to new iPad?)
I've recently gotten an iPad Air to replace my previous iPad 2. I have a bunch of books and PDFs in iBooks on the old iPad, and want to transfer them to the new iPad.
A search of Apple Support informs me that anything I've purchased from iBooks can be downloaded at any time to any of my devices (works like Amazon's Kindle system, apparently), but nearly all the content I have in iBooks on the iPad I've downloaded from other sources, so it won't be in my iBooks Store account (I might have bought one book there).
I've also seen several instructions on how to copy all my data from the old iPad to the new via Backup & Restore, but that seems to require restoring the new iPad to factory setup, which would delete everything I have on it now – including a bunch more books I've gotten since I started using the new iPad. And I don't want to copy everything, only the books/PDFs (the new iPad has everything I want, except for the books).
Since there seems to be no way to transfer files directly from one iPad to the other, it seems it must be done via iTunes on my MacBook Pro (and I want to copy all the books/PDFs to the computer anyway). So I connected the iPad 2 to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.4) and opened iTunes (11.3.1). Then clicked on the iPad's name in the sidebar to the left, and on Books below it. I see a list of the books on the iPad. I check the little boxes by all their names to select them (not sure if that's necessary, but it seems like a good idea), then click on the Sync button at the lower right, to the right of the bar at the bottom of the window with colored bands showing memory usage on the iPad. A message appears saying "The app 'iBooks' was not installed on the iPad '[name]' because the app could not be found."
But iBooks is already on the iPad; I have it open and see the list of books in it, which matches the list shown in iTunes. The message has a "More Information" button; I click that and it opens an Apple Support article titled "iOS: An app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open": "Learn what to do if you see one of these issues with an app you downloaded from the App Store on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: The app unexpectedly quits; The app stops responding; You can’t open the app." But none of these apply; the iBooks app is on the iPad, and works fine there.
The article suggests: (1) Restart the App. I've done that, no help. (2) Restart your device. Done that, no help. (3) Update your device software and your apps. The iPad is running iOS 6.1.3, iBooks 3.1.3; not the latest versions, no, but I'd rather not update it to newer, bigger, more power-hungry versions if I don't have to. Is it that iTunes 11 doesn't work with iOS 6? I haven't seen this stated anywhere.
So instead I click the OK button on the message, but nothing further happens, so far as I can tell: None of the books/PDFs on the iPad (about 380MB) appear in iBooks on the MacBook Pro.
I click on "Books" in the row of words across the top of the iTunes window, and it shows me the single PDF presently in iBooks on the MacBook Pro. I click the box by "Sync Books", and a message appears: "Are you sure you want to remove existing music, movies, TV shows, books, and tones from this iPad and sync with this iTunes library?" Well, no, that's exactly what I DON'T want to do. I don't want to erase the 380MB of books and PDFs on the iPad and replace them with the single PDF now in iBooks on the MacBook Pro. I want to copy the books from the iPad 2 to iTunes, so I can copy them back to the new iPad Air (if, God willing, I can figure out how to do that without erasing the books now on the iPad Air).
I've been working with Macintosh computers for over 26 years. It's always been a fairly simple process to copy files from one computer to another. I don't want to "sync" all the data (address book, email, God knows what else) on the iPad with the corresponding information on the MacBook Pro – especially if that will erase everything on the iPad (which has information not on the MacBook Pro, e.g. 380MB of books). I just want to copy the books and PDFs in iBooks from the old iPad to the MacBook Pro, then to the new iPad, adding them to the books on the new iPad, so I don't lose anything.
Can anybody give me a clue?

Transferring your prepaid cellular data account depends on your carrier. AT&T lets you move it yourself when you go to Cellular Data in Settings and log into your account with your previous AT&T user name and password. For iPads with Sprint service, you can set up an account on the new iPad and contact Sprint Customer Care (888-211-4727 and go through the menus) to deactivate the old plan and get credit for unused service. For Verizon, call the company’s customer service number for mobile broadband support (800-786-8419) and ask to have your account transferred.

  • IS THERE A WAY TO DELETE A PURCHASE FROM IBOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY AND ICLOUD, OR AT LEAST A WAY TO HIDE WHAT YOU'VE PURCHASED IN THIS NEW APP?

Dear Apple, my name is Jack, and I recently upgraded my computer to the new OSX 10.9, which included among many other apps the iBooks one, in this new iBooks app for Mac I accidentally downloaded by mistake a sort of obscene japanese comic book, since the moment that this happened I've been trying to remove this content from my iBooks library, which is being impossible due to the fact that even if a successfully delete the book with the backspace key it still appears but with an iCloud symbol, and if I go to my iCloud settings theres no options to stop iBooks form sharing this on iCloud for there is no "iBooks" option on iCloud settings, I even followed a Tutorial on the apple web page about hiding your purchases that explains how to, but in this new version of iTunes there is no such option as "connect" under the Store menu of iTunes, or even if I make my way to my iTunes purchases this new iBook purchases does not appear. I just want to be able to open my new iBooks app without having to see this obscene japanese comic book all over the app. My request is for you people to add an option to completely remove books from the library and from iCloud, please, so far these new OSX was amazing and this is the very first time I have something to complain about.

Well as a matter of fact, I already found the solution. The option is a little bit hidden, and this will remove your purchases completely from the library and iCloud. What you have to do is this: 1.- Open iBooks app, and the first thing you will get it's your library, then at the top left corner of the window click on iBooks Store. Once iBooks store is open you will have four options at the top: "Featured", "Top Charts", "Categories" and "Top Authors", you have to click on "Featured" or "Categories" it's the same but you have to be on any of those two.
2.- Once you are in "Featured" or "Categories" at the right side of the window there's going to be your email address that you use as your apple id, and in "Categories"  you will see at the right side the topic "All Categories"  and bellow that you will see your email address again. Doesn't matter if you are on categories or featured the option bellow your apple id is going to be QUICK LINKS, and bellow that there's gonna be four options: Account. Purchased, Redeem and Support. Click on Purchased.
3.-Once you clicked on purchased and the Purchased window is open you will see in the middle of the window two options : "All" and "Not in my Library", click on "All", then you will have all your purchases, there you will only have to put the cursor on the book you want to completely delete, but without clicking on it, just putting the cursor in the book and a black cross will appear at the top left corner of the book, click on the cross, if it ask you are sure you want to hide or delete the content just click the affirmative option.
4.- In the top left corner click library again, once in your library you have to find the options that are at the very top of your screen, the ones that are in the same bar as your computer name, date and time, volume and in the case of macbooks the wifi signal and the battery. Those options are: iBooks, File, Edit, View, Go, Store, Window and Help. Click on "View" , when you get all the options of "View" you'll have to find the one that says "Show Purchases in iCloud" and most likely would have a check mark, if it does not have a check mark close it and skip to step 5, if it does have a check mark just click on this option so the check mark disappears.
5.- Last step. Now you just have to close the app, completely, so go to your dock and give a secondary click on iBooks app and on the secondary click options click Quit. Just open iBooks again and there will be there no more.
Hope this is of some help to any of you, and sorry if this was tricky or if I'm not very good at explaining. I figured this by myself so if any of you does not get this explanation just send me an email, I'll be happy to help you with it.

  • Corruption of devices by charging from iBook

Hi. my problem seems so wierd that I haven't really trawled the forums for an answer but here goes. I have charged 2 Motorola V3i phones from my iBook G4 (having to return then to the dealer for a replacement each time). Both became 'corrupt' - ie: I couldn't use the phone at all. I only put 2 and 2 together after the second phone 'died'- The common factor being the charge from the iBook. Then, stupidly forgetting these happenings I bought a new iPod, charged it up from the iBook, copied all my iTunes over. Great all seemed fine, till I went onto the iTunes store to buy a new album! I went to update the iPod and got a -48 Unknown Error message! This basically said that the iPod could not be updated and the only way to do so was to do a reset. I tried the iPod on 2 other Macs I have, only to experience the same result! I took it back to the dealer and initially they got it to work after a reset and updating from the inStore MacBook Pro. However knowing what I knew about my phone experience I tried it again on my iBook before leaving the dealer. Same thing. He said he's never seen anything like it and thankfully gave me a new iPod. My dilema is that I am now scared to plug the iPod into the iBook and as I use this Mac loads (it has all my iLife stuff on it and I love using it) for fear of corrupting the iPod. It's almost as though the ibook is somehow damaging the electronics/battery of these devices. Does anyone have an answer! I know buying a new MacBook/Pro laptop would be the ideal answer but even then I am worried about that becoming 'infected' with the same problem! Is there such a thing as 'bad electricity'?Thanks

Hi, just so you know, it's not the iBook that's the problem. Turns out there's a major issue with the latest iPods. I returned mine to the store and got a refund as I was so hacked off!

  • Is there anyway to transfer a pdf document (book) from iBooks to a third-party app like PDF Expert?

I've been having problems using Dropbox to transfer a large pdf document(2.3GB) from my MacBook Pro to my iPad. Each time I upload the document to my Dropbox, the file becomes unreadable. I am able to read the document on my MacBook Pro before uploading it to my Dropbox, however. Since the uploading process seems to be corrupting the file somehow, I decided to transfer the file using iTunes, which places the doument into the iBooks app on my iPad. I have opened the file using the iBooks app and I am able to read it, but I want to be able to use PDF Expert to read the document and so I need to somehow move the document from iBooks to PDF Expert. Is there a way to transfer the file? Or I'm I now limited to using iBooks only? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Have you tried GoodReader? It claims to handle very large file sizes and it's very good for annotations. It's my PDF reader of choice on the iPad
    From the GoodReader manual:
File types to view in GoodReader
There are two types of viewing engines - the ones that we've written ourselves, and the built-in device's standard viewing engine. Our own engines provide great flexibility and many additional features not found in the built-in engine (for example, opening very large files). The built-in engine is very powerful and knows many file formats, but has many limitations and no additional features.
Files of very big size (our own viewing engine):
very large PDF files (including password-protected). File size is not the limit. Revolutionary PDF Reflow (Extract Pure Text) mode. See Viewing PDF Files for details.
very large TXT files. See Viewing TXT Files for details.
high-resolution pictures and other graphic files (including slideshow viewing mode). See Viewing Pictures for details.
And as a free bonus - files of normal size (iOS standard viewing engine):
all file formats supported by Safari engine: Microsoft Office files - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML files and Safariwebarchives
iWork'08/09 files - Pages, Numbers, Keynote (files must be saved with Include Preview option)
.ai files saved with PDF Compatible option
audio files (natively supported by iOS)
video files (natively supported by iOS)

  • How to extract pdfs from iPad to macbook?

I've had an ipad for ages but have only just moved from a PC to a new Macbook. I've successfully copied my Itunes library to my new Macbook but when trying to sync my ipad to the macbook it thinks there are two libraies in use and wants to erase everything on my ipad and sync with itunes. This has been ok for my ipods but I have downloaded a lot of PDF files from the internet into iBooks (eg Lego instruction manuals) and believe these will all be deleted if I sync.
There are too many to email myself - is there anyway of extracting them from the ipad and loading onto the macbook and then sync the library once more or am I stuffed?

Thanks but transferring purchases doesn't seem to put them in itunes either... though two more have appeared for some reason but everything else not bought via ibook store remains only on the ipad..?
Couldn't see anything obvious in the highlighted article as it does seem to reference transferring bought items from ibook store not downloaded pdfs...
    Any other ideas?
    Many thanks
