From Leopard back to Tiger

Odd question to ask I know but have experienced some problems since upgrading to Leopard, one being that my Superdrive no longer burns DVD's!! This appears to be an ongoing thing judging by some threads I've seen and I can't really afford to be going out and buying an external DVD burner! How easy should it be to go back to Tiger?

Yes, you can do the same as you did previously, with one exception. When you were installing Leopard you were going forward with a newer OS X version.
However, your Mac will block you from installing backwards unless you click the "Options" button at the bottom of the Destination selection screen early in the install process. You will then need to choose the type of install you will be doing, or you will need to choose to erase everything on the hard drive - Leopard and all else. Otherwise, your Mac will block you from accidentally going backwards with OS X by mistakenly using an older install disc, the result of which would be to destroy a more current OS X system.
If you have files you want/need to save from the Leopard hard drive, you should burn them to disc, copy them onto another Mac or onto an external hard drive, or copy to some other backup. If none of those are possible and you have enough empty space on your internal hard drive to keep everything on it now AND also install Tiger, you can use your Tiger install disc to "archive and install" a new OS X Tiger along side your current OS X Leopard folder. Afterwards, you would be able to move your files from the archived Leopard folder to the new Tiger folder.
If you proceed without noticing the "Options" button, and see the "Customize" button at the bottom of the "Easy Install" screen, you have passed the screen where the "Options" button was, and you need to back up to the previous page to access it. Once you have made an "Options" selection, you will have removed the OS X block and you will be able to proceed with the install of Tiger.
If you choose to Archive and Install - once you have Tiger installed and setup the way you need and have moved all your files over to the fresh Tiger system, you can then throw into the trash the archived folder containing your unwanted Leopard system. Once you then empty your trash, Leopard will be gone, and you will have back the hard drive space.

You mean you have never made backups? Consider yourself lucky that you have never had complete data loss resulting from a drive failure.
Get an external hard drive. Clone your hard drive to it with a program like SuperDuper. Then erase your internal hard drive, and reinstall Tiger on it. Then copy over your personal files from your backup.
No you cannot Archive & Install Tiger on a volume that has Leopard installed. You can try, and it might appear to work, but Apple does not recommend it because it could result in an unstable system.

Authentication from Leopard Gear over Tiger Servers

I work for a company that is slowly moving toward migrating to Leopard severs and are using Tiger servers in the meantime
I have a new iMac running, which is on my companies domain and has been authenticated through Directory Services. Here is my issue. When I enter in a login/password regardless if they are users or admins, it takes 90 seconds to fully get in. Is this because, this Leopard build is trying to authenticate over Tiger Severs i.e. - a previous O/S and if so, is there any way to correct this from the machines end and speed up the entry? Thanks.

Can A Boot Camp Partition Made With Leopard Live With Tiger?

If I downgrade from Leopard back to Tiger, will my Boot Camp XP partition still be bootable and recognizable?

The short answer is YES. I say that because now all driver updates are offered by apple on the WINDOWS SIDE via Apple Software Update so you shouldn't need Leopard for that. This means that downgrading to Tiger should not affect the Windows partition and its contents.
Be sure to back up everything before downgrading.

Reverse back to Tiger 10.4.x

What's the best way to downgrade from Leopard back to 10.4.x? Since upgrading to Leopard I can no longer print. Others have encountered similar problems (check the printing forums). Anyway I was think of going back to 10.4 until HP or Apple can put together a driver which works for my HP 3650.

I had the same problem, but with a Canon i9900 printer. Try using a USB cable on your printer, if you are using a firewire cable now. If that works then go back to the firewire cable. One of the two should work. If not then goto the printer OEM web site and look for a Leopard driver, install, restart, and try again with either cable.
If that fails to produce the desired results then make sre you have a external hard drive attached to your Leopard mac. Let time machine back up your entire drive, then go to the next step.
Using your cloned copy back up drive, copy back your Tiger OSX and files to your hard drive.
This assumes you did back up your hard drive.
If not then use your Tiger OS disk and do a clean install. Then re-install all your applications, files and etc.
If and when you decide to re-install Leopard you can reattach the backup drive used by time machine to your mac, then using the Leopard DVD install disk restore your Leopard and all files to the mac.

Downgrade back to Tiger

Any way to downgrade OFF Leopard back to Tiger?
There is a long list of things that are now broken, aside from the performance issues (I know, I'm using a G4 so I knew there would be a hit there).
Safari won't connect to university websites and neither will Firefox, and this is a HUGE blow. Nothign seems amiss with the firewall.
Can't connect wirelessly. Keeps saying the connection times out. On top of that, it CONSTANTLY asks for the WPA password even when I checked remember and have entered it in like 100 times now.
Matlab refuses to load when it did before.
My serial communications program no longer works.

Haven't tried this yet, but the apple support site recommends a reinstall using "archive and install". They say you will have to reinstall applications and plug-ins after this process. They don't mention what happens to your boot camp partition, so beware. This process is suppose to fix the long blue screen delay during boot. Maybe it will fix the overall slow performance!

Migrating back from leopard 10.5.x back to tiger 10.4.11

Hi there,
KDX server transfers are failing on leopard 10.5.x and therefore I need to migrate back to tiger 10.4.11. Could somebody please send me appropriate directions on how to safely migrate from 10.5.x back to 10.4.11?

First make a full backup of your current system.
The only (semi) automatic downgrade option is an [archive and install|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710?viewlocale=en_US] of Tiger over your current leopard system. You won't be able to preserve your user and network settings if you do this. Your old system and and your old home folder will be preserved in the "Previous systems" folder at the top level of your hard drive.

Keep in mind that archive and install downgrade is not recommended by apple and I've seen reports of some people having problems with it. Therefore, having a full backup of your current system is essential.

I believe the proper way is to use your Leopard DVD to erase the HD. I would perform a full erase (include freespace), then boot, holding down the "C" key and install Panther. However, at this point you should seriously consider Tiger. I am presuming your PowerBook is a PPC (non-Intel) OS. The commercial Tiger CDs will install on your system. I upgraded my G5 from Panther, which it came with, to Tiger when it came out. Tiger is far superior to Panther.

so i upgraded from tiger to leopard, then i had a few problems, i.e. itunes would quit everytime i tried to delete a podcast, or editing multiple song info would make it crash. My ms word continously crashes as well as ichat.
So since i really need this maching working for school, can anyone tell me how to get back to tiger?
i tried an archive install and that did not work, i also tried creating a user acount and i know the problem lies within my primary user account, not other newly created accounts, i also tried removing cache and some plists so it would rebuild but still same problem.
So, CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO GET BACK TO TIGER WITHOUT LOSING ANY OF MY DATA? PLEASE?

Getting Tiger back from Leopard

Hi, I've just bought a new G5 Imac 2.4Ghz with a view to running Pro Tools for music production. I realise that Pro Tools is currently not compatible with Leopard and so was planning to revert it back to Tiger ASAP. This seems to be harder than anticipated due to the fact that no drop in disk was provided with the computer. According to Apple the computer was originally shipped with Tiger and has been upgraded along the way so presumably I should be able to get Tiger back! Anyone any ideas on how I can go about doing this?

Since the generic Tiger DVD is PPC only you can't use that to get Tiger on you Intel iMac. This leaves you as the only alternative to use the hardware specific Tiger DVD for the 2.4 GHz Intel iMac. I think it is going to be extremely difficult to find them.

First, welcome to the Apple boards.
Backup what you have because it probably contains things from the original update you want to keep - network settings, passwords, etc. A bootable clone is your best bet - and test it out.
Then you need to format your HD (full, not quick) with the Leopard DVD and then reboot with the Tiger CD and install it. I am not sure how much you can migrate "downwards" from the Leopard backup, but some things will probably come along OK. Not sure about mail since it was converted by Leopard - will it unconvert? Don't know.
I have read of some who tried to simply install Tiger over Leopard but the results were less than great. You can try it once you have that clone backup, because you won't be losing anything.
I would suggest unplugging the clone during the erase and install process until you get to the migration point.

I have a brand new Leopard based MacBook Pro that I need to revert to its previous cat form of Tiger. Would you mind walking me through it? I have Tiger disks that came with another MacBook Pro so those should have all of the machine specific items I will need. As I understand this, I start the computer from the included Leopard disk and do a full format. (I noticed that there is a new partition style named GUID Partition, is this Leopard only?) Next, I load in my Tiger disks and install from those? I do not need to do any system backups as I have no information on this computer as of yet. Any help would be appreciated.

Need help reverting to Tiger from Leopard

Last last year I purchased a new iMac that came with Tiger (version 10.4.10) installed. I set it up and everything worked great, including the wireless. Unfortunately, it also came with a Leopard install disk in the box, and, not realizing that Leopard is Apple's equivalent of Vista, I "upgraded" the machine to Leopard. My wireless has not worked well since, and, after waiting for several Leopard updates to "solve" the problem without apparent success, I think I just want to revert back to Tiger.
I was thinking the best thing to do is an Erase and Install using the 10.4.10 install disks that came with the computer. However, I believe that when I "upgraded" to Leopard, Mail 3 modified the mail format used by Mail 2, and similarly with Address Book. So my primary question is how to get my mail and address information back to Tiger. Does anyone know if I archive off my mailboxes from Leopard's Mail 3 in mbox format, will I then be able to successfully import them back into Tiger's Mail 2? Similarly, can I export Leopard Address Book information into vcards and then read them back into Tiger's Address Book? Or are there better ways of doing this?

I have looked through and posted to the Leopard "Getting Online and Networking" forum for months now looking for a solution. I really don't want to go through the "it's the router's fault" discussion anymore with the posters who want to blame everybody but Apple for something that obviously showed up in Leopard. This includes those who somehow believe that only Apple implements the standards correctly and the rest of the world doesn't, so the rest of the world is at fault.
I am just hoping someone who has some knowledge about reverting can answer my original questions in this post about getting e-mail and address book information back into Tiger from Leopard.

Restore Library - Reverting from Leopard to Tiger.

I needed to install an old version of Avid Xpress that only runs on 10.4.6. I backed up my Aperture vault on redundant hard drives and did an erase and install from Leopard. Now I am back to Tiger and my avid software is working fine. I was able to install aperture okay, but it will not allow me to restore my vault because it is from a newer version of OS X.
I need to access my photos, but can't upgrade to anything past 10.4.6, as my Avid software will not work.
Are there any solutions you know of that may allow me to somehow access my aperture library without leaving 10.4.6?

one solution would be to create a partitioned environment where you have 10.4.6 installed on one partition and 10.5.x on the other, the boot into the area required. You could even install the OS on a firewire drive. Bit of a pain but if there is no way(?) of opening your library in 10.4.6...
This also allows you to operate applications that require the latest version of Mac OS.

Downgrade from Leopard to Tiger after Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update?

Can I downgrade from Leopard to Tiger after having applied the Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0? This firmware update requires OS 10.5.2 or higher to be installed. Now that it is installed can I downgrade back to Tiger (10.4.11)?
I have a MacBook Pro 17 (late 2006). It ran perfect except for the occasional ignored first key press problem that these MacBook's have. In late December I upgraded to Leopard (10.5.6) and installed the Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 that is suppose to fix the ignored first key press problem. Ever since then I have had constant keyboard & trackpad failures. When the built-in keyboard fails, thankfully I can still use an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard & mouse. I've tried everything. I've reinstalled Leopard four separate times, reset PRAM, reset SMU, repair permissions, pressure on the keyboard cable under the battery (even though I don't think this version of the MacBook has that problem). Nothing restored my internal keyboard and trackpad. During this process I tried to re-install the Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update using the original package file that I had downloaded, however I was given a message that the keyboard didn't need to be update because it already has the updated functionality and the installer package would then quit. Then I remembered that the original firmware update actually installed a Keyboard Firmware Update application in my Utilities Folder. When I ran the Firmware Update application in the Utilities Folder it instantly fixed my keyboard problem! Unfortunately the keyboard fix is not stable. It fails 2 to 3 time a week. Running the Keyboard Firmware Update application fixes the problem every single time, but this renders my MacBook useless as a portable (I have to have an external keyboard/mouse to run the Firmware application). I have, incidentally, tried all the other suggestions in the many keyboard threads in this forum (putting the computer to sleep, restarts, shut downs, PRAM & SMU resets, repairing permissions, running other applications, etc.), and nothing works except reinstalling the Keyboard Firmware Update using the application in the Utilities Folder. At this point I just want to downgrade to Tiger and go back to the way it was. I'll happily take the ignored first key press problem over a completely dead keyboard.

I was just wondering how you were able to get the macbook to accept the update? I had to take mine to apple store and get entire keyboard and trackpad replaced in my macbook. They then told me to ignore the update cause they did not have any other keyboards to replace if it happened again.

Importing iCal from Leopard to Tiger

I've set up my sister's new Mac running Leopard, showed her iCal, configured it with Calendars and Events. Then I exported it as an .ics file. Sent myself a copy and tried to import her set of scheduled Events into my copy of iCal, running under Tiger. (Haven't upgraded my machine yet.)
However nothing imports. I created the identical Calendars as she has. Still nothing.
I may be under a misapprehension, dunno. I've been assuming when doing an Export then ALL the calendars are exported. She has several.
Or does iCal Leopard not support iCal Tiger? If so, that would be startling.

I am not sure, but if your attempt used iCal>File>Export.../Import... and that did not work, I have my doubts that using iCal>File>Back up iCal.../Restore iCal will work from Leopard to Tiger.
