From mailbox/folder to trash

I'm about to go nuts. Everytime I empty my trash, Mail grabs something out of my Inbox or "Sent" or a folder and places it in the trash. Sometimes the item has been duplicated (my original is still where it belongs), sometimes it is not. If I empty the trash, then click on another folder or file, then go back to the trash, then something has been placed there again. If I go back and forth several times, sometimes the one file remains in the trash, sometimes it adds additional emails. Sometimes the emails are consecutive dates, sometimes they are not.
Basically...it all seems very random.
I just reinstalled my system today because of an unrelated problem (Aperture wouldn't open, now it does--I also re-installed Aperture). I also installed all updates, of course.
What next?
Thank you.
BTW: I've searched the forum without finding anything.

Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, try this:
1. Quit Mail.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
3. Locate the Envelope Index file and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Auto Delete From "On My Mac" Trash and Junk Mailboxes?

I have three pop accounts set up. I have set the prefs for each account to autodelete trash and junk messages older than one week. This works.
However, when I delete a message from a folder I manually created, Mail moves it to an "On My Mac" trash folder. If I mark a message as junk from a folder I manually created, it is moved to an "On My Mac" junk folder. These "On My Mac" trash and junk folders do not autodelete the messages. I cannot find a preference to set an autodelete option for "On My Mac" trash and junk mailboxes.
Is there anyway to do this? Am I missing something?
    Thanks

AFAIK, that’s how it works and you aren’t missing anything. The Mailbox Behaviors settings are account-specific and there is no way to specify those settings for “On My Mac” mailboxes... except I have my accounts set to erase messages in the Trash when quitting Mail, and my “On My Mac” Trash does the same...

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Cannot delete an mailbox folder from email client

Somewhere along the way I created a mailbox folder entitled Nøtz - that folder does not appear on any iOS devices nor in my Mac mail, it does however, show up in other email clients that I use such as Thunderbird, however, the folder is somehow invaild; likely due to the ø character in the name...
I don't need the folder and would like to delete it because it is giving these other email client fits... since I can't see it in iCloud, on my Mac, nor any iOS devices I can't delete it, it's like a phantom specter!!
    Any ideas on this?
    Thanks,
    Gary

I also have this problem. I have it in every email client I use IMAP in (Thunderbird and Apple Mail). I used a non alpha numeric character (so not foreign, but I think one was a slash, the other may have been a dash or dot). I would LOVE to delete them, but the error says that these foldes 'don't exist on the server' but obviously, that's where they came from... (using GoDaddy and their interface in webmail does NOT show these folders, so I can't delete them there either). At a minimum, I would like to unsubscribe them or hide them, so they don't clog my left side folder navigation. Can you not hide folders in the sidebar in Apple Mail (Mavericks)?

  • A "genius" at an Apple store told me to delete the photos from my documents folder and trash them and I would still be able to keep them in iPhoto.  Now I cannot use the photos other than in the iPhoto file. Can this be undone?

How can I retreive deleted iPhotos which were deleted from the documents and trash files?  I stupidly did this because a "genius" from Apple Store assured me that I would still have access to the photos.

    Check iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to see if it's set to a referenced or managed library;
If it's set to a referenced library you photos are gone.
If that's the case they might be able to be recovered with a file recovery app like   SubrosaSoft FileSalvage.  It will run in demo mode so you can see if it can recover your photos before having to purchase it. Use the iMac as little as possible till them so as not to overwrite them.
If it's set to a managed library launch iPhoto with the Option+Command keys held down and rebuild the library's databse file.
What verson of iPhoto and system are you running?

  • ICloud mail: iPhone creates Deleted Messages folder for Trash mail?

I had a problem with one iCloud email account which I've spent half a day truing to sort so though I'd post what happened here in case anyone knows how it happened or in case anyone has the same problem.  The problem centres around the Trash folder.
On all the other accounts (all iCloud email) the folders are replicated and all work.  So Sent, Archive, Drafts and Trash are there.  Deleting a mail on the iPhone, on the Mac or the Cloud puts the mail in the Trash (with the bin icon) and it's visible on all three devices in the same location (albeit the phone uses the Deleted Messages name for trash which is a bit dumb IMO considering it's called Trash everywhere else!!).
One account though seems to be in a mess.  In the Cloud the folder structure is correct and all with the icons.  The first problem is when adding the account to the phone.
First up, when selecting the various behaviours you can see the Deleted Messages icon with the bin icon to select for deleted messages (I do think this is confusing though - why not use the same folder name as appears in IMAP mail - Trash???)  BUT there is also a folder called Trash that the phone can see in IMAP but that doesn't exist in the iCloud folder structure.  Why this folder is even visible I don't know because on iCloud mail there are no user created folders at all, just the default icons and folder names.
When I send a message to the address on the iPhone and delete it from there the iPhone creates a Deleted Messages folder that is visible on iCloud mail.  When I select the bin/trash icon on mail on the phone the mail is in there.  The bin / Trash folder on iCloud remains empty and the Deleted Messages folder has the deleted mail.
So the first issue seems to be that the phone is seeing a folder that isn't there or that somehow the correctly named Trash folder with the icon has become named Trash when the phone sees it, and has a generic folder icon.  Either way, I can't delete this Trash folder.
How it seems to have got fixed was that after trying all manner of things I went to Preferences on iCloud.  I told iCloud to store messages in Deleted Messages.  I then deleted the Deleted Messages folder then suddenly this Trash folder the phone had been seeing became visible.  I then deleted that too and on checking back the Preferences had defaulted back to Trash, the only available option now.
Having gone back to the iPhone the bin icon is still next to the Deleted Messages folder but that Trash folder had gone.  There were no other user defined folders either
I then tested sending messages to the account and deleting them from the phone, Mac and Cloud and they all went to the right place (Trash) and were all visible.
I'd had a problem ages ago where random mailboxes were appearing under the separate email names BELOW where the default boxes are listed and below any On My Mac folders.  I'm wondering whether at some stage, with an old Google hangover, whether I'd selected 'Use this Mailbox for' when these random boxes appeared which might have renamed or messed with the routing of boxes in the Cloud.

That's the way it works. Push notifications are only triggered when you get "new" mail. Other actions, like deleting, reading, moving to a folder do not trigger a Push notification. Those actions only change things when you open the mail app.

  • Can't send spam to junk from In folder

My Mail app is acting funny, main prob is that it takes minutes to send spam from In folder to Junk (in fact it seems to be refusing to do so at all now, the coloured beachball just keeps turning) . Also it has just now marked as unread all 4,000+ items in my In folder as unread. Problem seems to have started after I installed Junkmatcher because lots of junk was evading built in spam filter and arriving in In box. I have deactivated Junkmatcher which didn't work at all and made everything v slow, I have put it in trash but it won't empty it from trash, says it is still in use. I have OS10.3.9.
    Any suggestions,
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hello Michael.
I copied the following from JunkMatcher's website for disabling or removing the application.
Remove the 3 rules the installer added for you: they are "Built-in Junk Filter", "JunkMatcher", and "Full Stop".
You can also just temporarily deactivate the "JunkMatcher" rule without uninstalling, and later you can turn JunkMatcher back on by activating this rule again (in that case don't remove the items listed below!).
    Quit Mail.app.
    Quit and remove JunkMatcher.app.
    Remove folder ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/JunkMatcher.mailbundle.
    Remove folder ~/Library/Application Support/JunkMatcher.
    Remove folder ~/Library/Preferences/edu.cmu.cs.benhdj.JunkMatcher.plist.
The recommended mailbox size limit for Jaguar or Panther Mail is 1GB. Since an account's Inbox mailbox is usually the most active mailbox and more prone to corruption over time, it is not a good idea to use an account's Inbox mailbox as the final storage location for all received messages not deleted.
Better to create/utilize "On My Mac" location mailboxes to sort received messages by category that you need to save.
If you want to remove JunkMatcher completely, follow the removal instructions provided first.
After doing so and with the Mail.app quit, using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox. The INBOX.mbox represents the account's Inbox mailbox in the mailboxes drawer under "In".
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, a new (and empty) INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder which will allow the Mail.app to function properly again while working on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size of each here.

  • Cannot create new mailbox folder on my mac.

I am trying to add a new mailbox folder and gives me error cannot create on your mac? What is this all about?

Apparently, Mail has a bug that causes ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes to sometimes be a file instead of a folder, and that prevents Mail from creating any mailboxes there.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, proceed as follows:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
    3. Locate Mailboxes. If it’s a file instead of a folder, move it to the Trash.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Mail Rules: targeting a specific mailbox folder

Is there a way I can target a specific mailbox folder in rules versus just an account? For example if I want to make a rule that and mail entering my gmail trash folder be moved to On My Mac trash, is this possible? Trying to avoid problems with All Mail and smart mailboxes.

You didn't say how you used TM to restore the mailbox.
    Try this:
Open Mail. With the Mail window active, enter TM. Go back in time where it shows the mailbox with the messages. Highlight the mailbox and all messages within. Click restore.
You may want to try using ONYX to rebuild the database files. It will rebuild the index files for Mail also.
Glenn, as I said, I restored from TM the specific folder/mailbox in question.   I did not try to rebuild the database files with ONYX.

  • Recovered files folder in Trash - Yosemite

After installing Yosemite on both my mid 2011 Mac Mini and my late 2013 MBP Retina 13 I have noticed that every time I start either computer there is a folder called "Recovered files" in the Trash with the file "MerpAD Database Daemon" inside the Recovered files folder. I delete it but with each restart it shows up again. Any ideas where these files are coming from. Thank you for your assistance.

This is an update to my original post. I found a fix for the Recovered Files folder showing up in Trash. It was from the Microsoft Community Forum and it worked on my system running Yosemite 10.10.2 and Office 2011 14.4.8
Open Finder >  select the GO drop down > select Go To Folder > then type in this command exactly as is: /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MERP2.0
    and select GO.
This opens MERP2.0 > double click Microsoft Error Reporting > select Preferences from the drop down next to the Apple menu > Uncheck "Enable Office Error Reporting". Close all the dialog boxes and restart the computer. The consensus from those posting to the MS forum was that they had to restart twice and this was the case for me as well. The first restart still produced the Recovered Files folder in Trash. On the second restart the Trash was empty. Hope this helps.
