From MB to MBP..?

Am debating moving from my 4 month old C2D Macbook to a MBP CD that is about 8 months old - it's gonna cost me about $700 for the priviledge but I have come to think that a/ the MB screen is a little too small for my tired eyes, and the way the edges of the MB are so sharp they're like holding your wrists over a barbed-wire fence - I've tested others and some are smoother and some are just as bad as mine.
Suffice to say, a MBP Core duo came onto the horizon when in fact I was just looking for a Powerbook G4 to get me through until Apple realise the design flaw on the Macbook and seriously smoothes out those edges. So, considering I'm not a massive power user, would it be like going for a Ferrari when a Saab will do? What's the attraction of the MBPs? I certainly like the bigger screen size but I've heard that Core Duos are hot, and that the keyboard isn't as good as the MB. The problem is I live in Japan so it's proving quite tough to find a Powerbook G4 that I know would be enough to fit my needs.
Any thoughts appreciated.

I don't know what you mean about the edges on the MB.. have used a few and can't say that anything particularly stood out as being bad in that respect.
frankly I think if the screen size is too small for you on your current machine, then the best option you have is to go for a current model MBP 15". you still get decent portability, and you don't have any of the possible risks associated with the superceded core duo series. of course, that's not to say that the current machines are perfect either..
as for holding out for rumored products.. meh.. sure, there may be another significant model around the corner, such as the much hoped for PB12" replacement. but one good thing about the intel move that apple made is that now speculation about what's around the corner is a lot easier to predict. before when macs used a CPU series exclusive only to macs, it was hard to know what might be coming. but with intel being in the picture, you just have to look at their roadmap, and you pretty much know what type of thing is likely to be served up next. not just in terms of CPU either, because the associated hardware and features are now more in line with what is standard in high-end PCs as well. I've seen a lot of people jump in and smugly say, well I'm holding off for the new santa rosa platform laptops cos they'll be the business, etc etc bla bla. but, that info is out there already. it's just another dual core 64bit capable CPU topping out at 2.4Ghz. I'm sure it'll have all sorts of other enhancements, and the machines themselves will prob ship with a bit more RAM, bigger hard drives, the usual stuff. but it's hardly going to ruin your life to have picked up a 2.33Ghz machine now, which has also proven itself to be a relatively safe bet reliability-wise, when the next ones come along.
another thing you hear a lot of is people saying, well I'll wait to buy a machine till they release machines to go with the OSX leopard update. I think a lot of this attitude comes from people either from the PC world, or people that deal with windows a lot. the whole vista thing has just created this big idea that it's risky to buy a machine when a new major OS is imminent, cos suddenly your hardware will be outdated and possibly unsupported. not only is this not true for macs, but it's almost the opposite.. it has been the case in the past with macs that certain models cannot work with a previous OS to the OS that was preloaded when they shipped. so for some users, this may actually be a huge, if temporary, disadvantage.. it's likely that not all software is going to be OSX 10.5 ready right from the launch date. so for many people, being able to stay on tiger is a big bonus, until their critical apps are good to go, and you may not be able to do that with a machine released after leopard is launched.
anyway, just food for thought...
as for battery life.. yes, I think every manufacturer gets their optimum specs for that from machines tested in vacuum chambers, with wifi, bluetooth, and basically everything turned off, no sound, the screen set to the minimum brightness just above off, and no apps running... you know, just like average day-to-day use..

  • Continue to backup to an existing Backup File on TimeCapsule from a new MBP

    Hi,
I had a MBP and I was using Time Machine and Time Capsule to back it up. I also copied all my files from my 'house' onto an external hard drive.
I bought a new MBP. I copied the files from the external hard drive onto the new MBP and started using my new MBP happily. However, I realize that I am no longer backing up to Time Machine with my new MBP. I would like to pick up from the old Time Machine backup from my old MBP and carry on.
Is this possible or do I have to wipe the old back up on my Time Machine and start over? I am worried there are files on the Time machine that I may not have manually copied over from the external hard drive.

    natmac wrote:
Oh. That's a real bummer. I purposely didn't use the backup from Time Machine because I was worried it was going to transfer over any weird preferences and glitches from my old mac. I've had my new mac for over a month now. I don't think I can figure out what's missing and revert back to an old Time Machine back up.
In that event, you have some choices:
How large is your TC's internal drive, how much empty space is on it, and how much is on your new Mac? If there's enough room, you could keep the old backups for a while, and let TM make a new set for the new Mac. Answer "Create New Backup" when you get the prompt in #B5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). That will make a separate +sparse bundle+ for the new backups, and you can delete the old one when you're sure you don't need them anymore.
Do you need more than the last backup from the old Mac? If not, you could erase the drive you had the temporary copies on, and restore either the entire backup or just your home folder to it. Then erase the TC's internal hard drive and let Time Machine start fresh. You won't be able to restore from the data on the external, but you can copy from it.
If you do either of those, connect via Ethernet if at all possible -- it will be much faster than WIFI.
If it's USB and large enough, you can "archive" the TC's internal disk to the external. Erase it first, then connect it to the TC. See #Q6 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Capsule+ forum).
Then erase the TC's internal HD and let Time Machine start fresh. You'll be able to access the copied backups via the +*Browse ...+* option, whether it's connected to your TC or directly to your Mac.

  • Leopard forgets color profiles when waking from sleep on MBP Santa Rosa

I have a 15" MBP Santa Rosa with a 22" Samsung external monitor. I performed a clean (erase and) install on my machine. Upon waking from sleep, the computer seems to have forgotten the color profiles loaded for the displays. To correct this, I open system preferences and then the display option. As soon as the display options are shown on the window, my MBP loads the correct profile. This has happened for both displays, though far more frequently on the external display. The profile for my Samsung was created using color calibration hardware/software but the MBP display is running the stock profile from Leopard.
Any thoughts? Has anyone else experienced this?

same issue here. also had it in tiger, but much more frequently in leopard. seems to be whenever my display wakes from sleep.
MBP 2.4 GHz SR purchased 6/07. also driving samsung 245bw external display (which has never been affected, unless perhaps my calibrated and default profiles aren't different enough for me to notice--the difference is severe on my built-in display).

  • Delete Photos Sync'd from a dead MBP?

I have a collection of photos that were added from my previous Mac Book Pro (it died a horrible death).  I would like to remove them from my iPad, but they will not display the Delete icon when they are selected in Photos.
How can I get rid of these pictures since the originating system is no longer available?
    Tim

Thanks, Allan.  That cleared all of the photos sync'd from the dead MBP and it left my current images imported directly from my EOS.
That's about as non-obvious as anything I've ever run into.

  • Possible to change default downloader speed displaying rate from KBps to Mbps?

I'm pretty tired of doing the calculations from KBps to Mbps (speeds advertised for internet connections). No one deals in KB for most stuff downloaded on the net. More in the order of MB. However, it would be easier to see how well its performing in Mbps. That way i can see how close to maximum it's running for a connection (wireless 3G, ADSL / DSL etc)
Is there somewhere in firefox i can change that output thats displayed in the download window from KBps to Mbps?
    help greatly appreciated.

    any ideas?

  • How do I access an old Time machine backup from my new MBP?

I wanted to access my Time Machine Backup from a new MBP. Time machine recognized my backup drive but could not find my Backup file. What's wrong here? I use another Login name on my new MBP - could that be the reason?

  • HT204350 Migrating from a 2010 MBP to a 2013 iMac - stuck halfway through???

I have begun migrating from a 2010 MBP to a 2013 iMac after installing mavericks on both. They are connected by ethernet. The MBP isn't updated to the latest version because it was installed from a previous copy from apple. The migration has started and is stuck on 1 hour19 mins, what should i do? is it safe to somehow stop the migration process? or is it best to leave it be for a few hours or something? i had a lot of trouble starting the process as i had to try multiple times to get it to locate all the files and folders on the MBP. Thanks for the help.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Leave it for some minutes to see if the migration process continues. If not, simply turn off both Macs, turn them on and transfer the files again.
If the migration gets stuck again, consider the option of making a Time Machine backup of your old MacBook Pro onto an external drive, and then use that backup to restore your files to the iMac. The steps to restore a backup from an external drive are the same.

  • Can I drop my HDD from my C2D MBP straight into an i5 MBP?

    I've got a MBP Core2Duo 2.26. I upgraded the drive in it myself to a 7200rpm 500gb Western Digital. It's running 10.6.6.
I'm getting a 2011 i5 MBP next week with a 320gb drive. Can I just drop the HDD from my old MBP into the new one?
Obviously my 'old' drive is bigger, is 7200rpm and has all of my data on it.
So is this possible without having to reinstall snow leopard etc? Will it just work?

Not without installing OS X. The OS on the new machine will be a different build. Your system will not fully work with the new machine unless the new machine comes with 10.6.5 or earlier installed.

  • How do I get all Photos from iMac to MBP

My iPhoto album has several hundred pictures in several albums.  While on the road, I'd like to put them on CD's or DVD's.  Right now they are all on my iMac and I'd like to move them over to my MBP which I have with me all of the time.  It makes more sense to be able to do the disc media on the road rather than at home.  Any suggestions how I can pair the iMac to the MBP in order to get the pictures onto the MBP would be an enormous help?

Join them with a Firewire cable and then restart the iMac while holding down T so it Boots into Target Disc mode, then it will appear on the MacBook Pro Desktop as a regular volume. Then just drag the iPhoto Library across from one to the other (this would replace any Library on the MBP so if you need that rename it first)

  • I can't sync iCal from my Mac (MBP) to my iPhone.  I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and I think that's when my iCal stopped syncing from MBP to iPhone.  Help please!

Does anyone know how or correct this problem?  Before the Mountain Lion upgrad (from Snow Leapord) I didn't have this problem.  Now, my iCal on the phone seems locked or frozen, and any additions I make to my MBP do not sync to my iPhone.  Really frustrating!

Well,  you can try this: right click the file, go down to encode file, and reencode it for the Mac.

  • Can't find newest backup - restoring TM backup from TC to MBP with new HD

So I bought an SSD for my MacBook Pro and am excited to get it in there, but I'm very particular about my settings, apps, data, and even my Chrome session (many tabs worth) going back to exactly as I left it when I first boot up with that new SSD. I do Time Machine backups daily to my Time Capsule and the last one was run last night at like 8pm, right before I shut down and swapped the hard drives.  I booted up with my Lion DVD and went through the options of restoring data to my newly formatted SSD from a TM backup, but low and behold, the last backup that OSX was telling me was a full, restorable backup was from November 2012! What gives???
Please help, I'm really wanting to get back up and running on this SSD and to restore all of this data is going to take many, many hours
    Thank you!

I left this one to other people to answer.. it isn't that you were ignored, but rather I just don't particularly like TM for doing full disk restores..
I am really hoping your old SSD is still available unwiped.. pristine.. unsullied??
If so, plug it into the MBP by whatever means you have.. usb, firewire.. etc. and change the boot over, to boot from the old ssd. Install superduper free version is fine.
Make an identical bootable copy from the old SSD now external to the new SSD in the MBP..
That is how I would do it.

  • Is there any way to prevent opening the lid from waking my MBP?

    Hi,
I have a problem with my screen on my MBP such that when the computer is asleep in its case the lid often comes ajar, wakes the computer, and drains the battery. Is there any way to prevent the lid opening from waking the computer?
Thanks for any ideas on how to fix this.

Option 3: Open Applications > Terminal and type sudo pmset lidwake 0 (you'll be prompted to enter your admin password). To revert to wake on lid open, use the Terminal command sudo pmset lidwake 1.

  • Need help installing Win8.1 from USB on MBP.

I have tried so many different things to get Windows 8.1 installing on my MacbookPro Late 2011 via USB.
I have modified the Bootcamp app as to allow me to create a usb installation from .iso.
    Those instructions are here:
Enable Bootcamp to install from usb for OSX 10.9**WORKS**
However upon following through and rebooting after partitioning the MBP just goes to a black screen and I get "No bootable device found"
I have tried creating a usb drive by cleaning, formating, and setting active a usb drive in Windows via diskpart. I then copied all elements
from my Windows 8.1 Pro iso to it. However this only gives me EFI boot option on the boot select screen when holding option.
The clean, partition, active steps were found here:
Enable Bootcamp to install from usb for OSX 10.9**WORKS**
EFI boot has never worked for me. It always results in windows install saying that the installer can't install to non GPT disks.
Whenever I try to use EFI boot on the USB installer, the Windows 8.1 installer won't install to the parition that either I have made with the bootcamp utility or simple another fat32 parition I made myself without the bootcamp utility. (Hyrbrid MBR vs strict GPT?)
After all this, simply inserting a windows 8.1 DVD into the drive I get the magical WINDOWS boot option in the boot option menu and I can install fine.
Why can't I get USB install of windows working.
I also still don't understand why EFI install never works for me.
This is in regards to a late 2011 MBP with dvd drive. It is running Yosemite.

You can use nvram (https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man8/nvram.8.html) but the issue is one of timing. If you are in BCA and BCA sets values and restarts, if you interrupt it using Alt key, switch to OSX (which will cause nvram to change as well), change nvram by guessing what BCA sets, and start again, what is not being set in nvram is lost.
In your specific case, is the Optical drive broken for you to try and attempt a pure USB-only installation?
If you make partitions using DU, and want BCA to use them, you must ensure an equivalent MBR set of entries.
BCA was designed to take care of all this anyway.
The easier method that I have suggested (via Feedback, to Apple Engineers) is to release firmware updates for all machine considered capable of running Yosemite/Mavericks and let them become UEFI compliant. If the CSM-BIOS layer already provides BIOS equivalents for EFI and Windows works using these with a Hybrid MBR, the EFI cousins should also work.
The other challenge is that W7 has EFI support, but full UEFI is available in W8+. There is no motivation on either side to retrofit older OS/HW to make it all work together for the convenience of the consumer.

  • Moving user from G5 to MBP

I want to move my wife's user account from the G5 to my MBP. I created her account with the same name on the MBP, but then realized I probably can't just copy her original folders over to the MBP and drop them accordingly into the MBP folders.
The MBP is not a new machine and already has another user's account on it so I don't want to do the whole Tiger Setup Asst. thing. The main thing I want her to be able to access on the new machine is her Mail folder (in Library). Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Lee, welcome, just log into you wife’s new Account and open Mail. You should be greeted by the new Account setup preferences. If not open Mail then go to Mail/Preferences and fill in the appropriate info. All settings should be exactly as they are on the original account. If these are set correctly then she should be able to open her mail account from the Mac Pro.
This should also create a folder for her mail account in the Users/username/Mail folder (example, [email protected]). And yes you can transfer any files from the old folder on the G5 (example, [email protected]) to the new folder on the Mac Pro.

  • Trnsfr data from G5 to MBP

Just got a MBP (newest model) and transferred data from G5 dual to MBP using Setup Asst. BUT I have two hard drives on the G5 and, unfortunately, transferred from wrong HD.
I also have Super Duper. I am wondering if I can connect the two computers with F/W and transfer all the data from the correct HD to the MBP
I would just as soon clear all the data I already transferred to the MBP from it, since I no longer use it.
Sorry for being ignorant but thanks for any help
    ben

You can mount the cloned drive on your new machine and transfer at will. If your external is FireWire, make sure to connect the two before turning on the external drive.
However, I would be careful about transferring applications that may function on the G5 but not the Intel machine.

  • TRANSFER ITUNES FROM G5 TO MBP

I'm just getting delivery of my new MBP sometime today. I want to transfer ALL my iTunes from my 5G to MBP (about 8000+songs & videos). I will also be using 2 250GB LaCie HDs as well. I assume what I've read that it can be done using Firewire. I've never used FW before to transfer anything. I just want to duplicate everything from my G5 to MBP. Anything I should know before I start so I don't get into a "can of worms"?.

Deauthorizing will prevent the computer from taking up one of the 5 computers that your iTunes Music Store account can handle.
Only 5 computers at a time can be allowed to play music/video you bought from the Music Store. So if you have your G5 authorized, you only have 4 computers left. And then 3 with your new MBP. But if you deauthorize the G5 you still have 4 left. Its in the Advanced menu.
