From moviemaker to imovie

Hello,
I am currently a pc user and will soon switch to apple. I sell instructional videos online and work with a company that puts it online and protects it from illegal copies. Problem is .. I have to send them my vids in wmv or wma format. Does Imovie support those?
tnx

You can edit in iMovie, but you must convert Windows Media files into an iMovie editable format before editing. After creating a movie in iMovie, you can convert to Windows media using an external app.
To my knowledge, the only Mac app that Microsoft has licensed to do this is [Flip4Mac, which you can find by clicking this link|http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm]. You will need the $49 version or higher.

how do i change the format to the right one?
Before you can decide what to do, you have to know what you are starting with. Sony MPEG-1 files would be converted one way while DivX or WMV files would likely be handled in another. Extraneous tracks can be removed directly with QT Pro but if you don't have QT Pro then there may or may not be other work around possibilities depending on the specific audio and video compression formats in use. The best place to start would normally be to double-clic the source file in iPhoto to open it in the QT Player. When it opens in the QT Player, check the "Inspector" window to see what it says on the "Format:" lines. This will tell you the type of audio and video content you are dealing with here. Then come and tell us so we can offer some specific conversion solutions.

  • How do I copy my video files from iPhoto to iMovie. The two   hour wait to view all in iMovie puts the kibosh on my edit time.

How do I copy my video files from iPhoto to iMovie? The two + hour wait for thumb nails and hour long wait looking for the right videos kills the time I have to edit.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Copy more than one clip at a time from iPhoto to iMovie?? Please help!

Is it possible to copy more than one clip at a time from iPhoto to iMovie? I can't find a way to select/copy more than one.

OK you can leave them in iPhoto and access them from the iMovie Event for iPhoto.
If you prefer to move them to a regular iMovie Event, you can do the following.
    1) right-click on one of the iPhoto clips and select "Reveal in Finder". This will open a finder window showing the clips in the iPhoto Library.
    2) In a different Finder window, create a folder to hold your event in iMovie. If you are using an internal drive, create a folder using your desired Event Name under the Movies/iMovie Events Folder.
Note: If you are using an external drive, create a Folder called iMovie Events at the top level of the external drive. Then create the (Event Name) folder under this. The external drive must be formatted as MacOS Extended (journaled) for this to work.
    3) Select all the clips in the iPhoto finder window that are part of this event and Move them to the Movies/iMovie Event/(Event Name) folder.
    4) After you have done this for all the Events, open iMovie and let it generate thumbnails. This may take a while.

  • Is there a way to create a picture from video in iMovie 11

Is there a way to create a jpg picture from video in imovie?
I have noticed several work arounds which are not so easy. This was previously a feature that was very helpful to put in stills in the drop zones in idvd from your video project. Only makes sense. Why has it been removed?

  • How can I import video and photos from iphoto to imovie?

Hi, I am having trouble importing media from iphoto into imove (imovie 10.5)
I am using a macbook pro 13 inch, early 2013 running mavericks.
I have created an event in imovies into which I would like to import both photos and videos from my iphoto library. However, when the import window opens, the list of options from where I can import has iphoto, but it is not clickable; I can not open it.
I have successfully imported from iphoto in the recent past on the same computer, but can't figure out what I'm doing wrong this time.
    Thanks for any suggestions

    OK, according to
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3290
your camera is supported by iMovie 9.  Perhaps the question is better asked in the iMovie forum.  Would you like me to ask a moderator to move the thread?

  • I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this?

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

Use File/Import/Movie and navigate to the file.

  • Need advice with video editing from iphoto to imovie, or something else.

ok, here's the deal. I have about 1tb of videos(in raw iphone straight to iphoto format), about 3k of them.  I took a few vids a day for a year or so. They are all in iphoto right now but i need to take each days vids and put them together and export that in a smaller format.  I need to do that for each day of the year.  But it's a nightmare trying to get the vids from iphoto to imovie.  Is there an easy way?  I don't want to do major work to them, i just want to put them all together and have 1 vid file.  So say I have 3 vids on jan 1st in iphoto, I need to move all 3 to another app, put them together, export the single file, keeping as much of the quality as I can, then I can delete the original raw vids and move that single file back to iphoto.
So instead of having events with lots of videos inside them, 1 event per day, 1 video.
any ideas on a quick and easy way to do this?

iMovie is the tool for that job and it's video so there are no "quick and easy ways", I'm afraid. The files are huge and it takes time.
What nightmare are you having getting the material from iPhoto to iMovie?
As there is a lot of repetition in the process you describe, have you considered using Automator to try and do some of the heavy lifting for you?
    Regards

  • How can I import movies from iTunes to iMovie?

I download video lectures from iTunes University to iTunes 10 and need to export them to iMovie 11 for editing. How can I do this?

I can't figure out how to import from iTunes into iMovie. I can select and view all movies in iTunes, but don't see any options for moving them to iMovie. Any suggestions?
Open iMovie '08, select the "Import Movies..." File menu option, navigate to where the movie is located on your hard drive and import it in the "Copy" mode. Alternatively, navigate to the file in the finder and "drop import" the file directly to a convenient named "event" in the open iMovie '08 application or "event" folder if the iMovie '08 application is not open.

  • From iPhoto to iMovie

I have created a slideshow in iPhoto, but would like to edit (add music/sound effects) that I can't manage in iPhoto. So I have been investigating iMovie.
First Question: After several tries, I have concluded that I can't move an entire slideshow from iPhoto to iMovie. To create in iMovie I have to start over again by dragging individual photos from the library that appears when I click on media>photos. Am I right?
Second Question: What do I have to do to make the photos from my iPhoto library 'fit' the window in iMovie? I have read some of the recent and archived posts on blurry and ragged edged results, but these discussions don't really help with my problem. I have moved only a few and so far the edges are fine and the sharpness looks OK. My problem is that I lose some of the pictutre from both top to bottom and side to side. Is there any cure for this?
    Sauble

I had the same problems, the top and the bottom are like black, so i used the ken burns effects, just play with it. Make the picture bigger with it, you can have it start and end at the same place and you can move the picture in the window, like move it down or more centered. Looks fine in iMovie.

  • Loss of quality of photos when importing from iphoto to imovie

A question... When I import high resolution photos from iphoto and look at the preview on imovie HD, the quality is the same great quality that I can see on iphoto. Once I import the photo clip onto imovie, however, the quality is very poor on the imovie playback. This drop in quality is regardless of whether Ken Burns effect is used or not.
I already checked the quality on imovie preferences and it is already selected as the highest quality (default setting)
Any clues as to why the photo image quality should drop to such a poor image when importing a photo from iphoto to imovie?

    Hi L
There are a great difference on photos shown on a Mac with eg. iPhoto or
PhotoShop and what's going to video.
    a. Different resolution. Just the number of lines as the selected type of project
eg: PAL 4x3 = 625 lines ≈ same in pixles (But square not elongated or visa versa)
    b. iMovie "Viewer" is just an approximation. I connected my miniDV Camera
to FW and analog to a TV. Select in pref - Play back via Camera. Now I see
the final quality on my TV. Usally much better.

  • How do I get pictures in an album from Iphoto to Imovie ?

I was at the Apple store and the salesclerk showed me quickly how she could take pics from Iphoto and then suddenly they were in Imovie and she created a movie. I try it and am doing something wrong, because it isn't working. Help, please. When I look at the tutorial, I see how to import a movie from a camera, but I want to go from Iphoto to Imovie. Help is appreciated.

That's because you're getting caught by the TV overscan issue. In iDVD create a slideshow using the "+" button at the bottom
and then drag your QT movie file into the slideshow. In iDVD'd advanced preferences select the option to Scale photos to TV safe area.
Then when you're ready to burn save the project as a disk image via the File->Save as Disk Image menu option. This separates the encoding process from the burning process. Mount the disk image on the desktop and play it with DVD Player. If all plays OK the encoding was OK.
Then durn to disc with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Can I use downloaded songs from iTunes into iMovie and burn DVDs?

If I use downloaded songs from iTunes in iMovie, will I be able to make DVDs of my movie without losing music files?

    Hi A
Probably but iMovie and I guess iDVD is fussy about in what format the audio
is in. It should be 48k/.aiff
If You in iTunes make an audio CD with the material You need in Your movie
and then Use this CD in iMovie it will work.
