From NTSC to PAL .mov - huge, urgent problem!!

Ive shot a shortfilm on a Canon XH A1 NTSC, 24 fps, HDV, 16:9.
It has been edited in FCP and exported as a Quiktime Movie (.mov)
Then i burned it to a DVD and discovers that it lags annoyingly when played on a DVD player (Im from Denmark so its PAL).
Now, i thought running it through FCP would have solved the NTSC / PAL problem automatically, but I was wrong.
How do I make my 23.98 fps Quiktime Movie play on a PAL DVD?? I tried Cinema Tools, but it wont open and conform the .mov file.
I have to turn it in tomorrow and seriusly need help.
Thank you so much...

Hi,
welcome to FCP discussion area.
A great standard converter is [Nattress Standard Converter|http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconvers ion.htm].
However, if you have Compressor you may convert from NTSC to PAL at no cost.
Compreesor settings>Other Workflows>Advanced Format Conversion>Standard Definition.
Here is an article which you may use as general guidance:

  • DVI to Video adapter switches from NTSC to PAL

I just bought an apple dvi to analog video adapter to connect my mac mini to my tv.
It worked like a charm the first time, but seems to reset for no reason from ntsc to pal output. This is really annoying because the pal output is nearly impossible to read, making it painful to switch it back. It's weird because it boots into ntsc just fine and the login window looks good. But as soon as I log in from either account, it opens in pal. When I change it, it will change back over night.
I tried using both composite and s-video plugs. The TV is a sony wega xbr (US).

I assume you have the previous generation mini even though you have posted in the forum for the newer one. The newer one wouldn't work at all from the adapter you describe. Anyway...
...OS X's display preferences files may have corrupted somehow. Especially since it worked before and now it doesn't. That really sounds like a problem with the configuration of the Mac.
In /Library/Preferences is a file called com.apple.windowserver.plist. Navigate your way to it and throw it in the trash. Also, in your main user account (folder with your name on it) under ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost will also be found a file com.apple.windowserver.xxxxxxxxxx.plist where the xxxxx is a hexidecimal string. Throw that file in the trash, too. Now restart.
When OS X restarts and finds those files missing from their expected location, it creates fresh copies with default values. This will give a clean start with any attached display.

  • Mistakenly changed from NTSC to PAL - Help!

My display settings on my mac mini were changed from NTSC to PAL (all i will say is that it involved a 3 year old) and now i can't get an output to my display. how do i change this??

Try starting in Safe mode. If that works, change the resolution from whatever is the starting resolution to another choice. For example, if it comes up at 640 x 480 NTSC, change to 800 x 600 NTSC. Then restart normally. Hopefully that will get things back to the way they were before.

  • FROM NTSC TO PAL

I have a sanyo xactia hd digital camera, so i want to change from 29 fps to 25 fps and i can't or i don't know how to do it. Can somebody help me?. Thanks a lot.

What camera are you shooting with? mpeg4 is not an idea editing format.
You can use compressor to change your finished sequence from ntsc to pal. Do some googling and searching here. And you might check the compressor documentation.
I use a plugin by Graeme Nattress to do the conversion. It does a great job

    Definitely worth the investment.

  • How can I change my iPhone 4S from NTSC to PAL?

Need help on how to switch my iPhone 4S from NTSC to PAL
since my iPhone is NTSC and my Car RADIO/DVD player PAL
I can hear the sound and the video/picture but unfortunately the video
    only in black and white!
    Help.....

If your iPhone is in good shape, you can trade it in at a Verizon Store for money toward a Verizon iPhone 4S (they start at $99.99) or you can sell it yourself, probably for a better price but more hassle.
    Best of luck.

  • Satellite P300-19P - How to change from NTSC to PAL?

Everytime I want to display on my TV I have to change the TV from PAL to NTSC as I can't find how to change the S-Video output on the laptop from NTSC to PAL.
    Does anyone know how to?
    Cheers.

    Hey,
Im not owner of Satellite P300 but either you can change this option in BIOS or in display driver. Normally there you have an option to change between PAL and NTSC on S-Video output.
    Check this!!!

  • Conversion from NTSC to PAL

Hi there, can anyone help me with that old chestnut of converting NTSC in FCP to PAL via Compressor and then onto DVD SP to burn PAL DVDs. By exporting the NTSC film from FCP using Compressor is it just a matter of setting the Inspector to PAL (as well as setting the Frame Controls to custom) even though the source file is NTSC, or does it need to be converted to PAL first. My first attempt indicated around 120 hours for processing. Is this the only option or is a plug-in required? I have tried reading the Apple manual several times but I find it just doesn't explain things clearly enough. There should be a section on standards conversion not just a vague reference here or there. Maybe I'm a bit thick. Has anyone else had this NTSC to PAL issue? Any help appreciated. Cheers.
    Al.

The use of Compressor 2 in format conversion should be restricted to short pieces (5-10 mins or less) because, yes, it takes forever. That is, unless you've got time to burn (or no money left in the budget).
The only advice I can give you is to set all your Frame Control setting to Better and not Best. Best increases rendering time about three-fold without that much of an encoding improvement. However, it still won't be quick.
(And no, you do not have to do a straight PAL -> NTSC conversion, then convert that NTSC movie to an MPEG-2)

  • Subtitles from ntsc to pal

I'm building a project in ntsc and pal and it's translated into 7 languages. Is there a way to export subtitles from the ntsc project to the pal project? I'm able to export the track description, convert to .stl, but then it won't import into pal. Help!

    hey there:
i guess there's no easy answers for the matters in this thread as it has no replies for more than a month.
i got a related problem - and actually i didn't DO the subtitles in encore, but imported a text file of them. i had to spot in encore, though, as my import didn't contain in/out time codes.
& now that that's all done in PAL, i'll need to do the same for NTSC. i actually figured out a kind of a rudimentary workaround for this (or, so i thought) by ripping the subtitles off the finished PAL dvd with an app called subrip & porting to subtitle workshop that exports the encore format. but unfortunately whatever i try to do converting between different time code formats/frame rates, the resulting NTSC time codes are out of whack.
the above, though a long story, does contain two core questions:
    - how to export subtitles & their time codes out of encore?
    - how to convert above export back & forth between PAL/NTSC?
    any pointers much appreciated... cheers!
    best,

  • IMovie - Changing From NTSC To PAL & Other Way Around

I want to make a dvd in pal format and at present its only doing them in NTSC format. I've looked at the help on the site which states:
iMovie initially set all projects to PAL or NTSC video depending on the type of camcorder or device you connect to the computer, or the format of the first video you import.
To set new projects to be NTSC or PAL, follow these steps:
Update to iMovie 3.0.3 or later. It is available from the iMovie website (http://www.apple.com/imovie/). iMovie 4 is available as part of iLife (http://www.apple.com/ilife).
    Open iMovie.
From the iMovie menu, choose Preferences.
Change "New Projects are:" to either NTSC or PAL.
Now I'm using 6.0.1 but I can't see "New Projects are" anywhere under the preferences in iMovie HD, can someone please offer me some suggestions as although this is my first mac I've had a pc for sometime so I'm not totally clueless about changing options and looking where to find these things....

With iMovie 6.0.1 the wording has changed slightly. In preferences, under 'General', you now want 'New Project Frame Rate:'. Set to 25 fps for PAL, and 29.97 fps for NTSC.
Presumably, as you're in the UK, all your imported footage is in PAL format anyway. If you are importing NTSC footage, but want to export in PAL, I would suggest that you convert the NTSC to PAL before importing it.

  • Going from NTSC to PAL

I have a DVD created for NTSC and now asked to create the same thing in PAL format. Using Final Cut Pro, what is t he best way to do this transformation?

    Hi:
Using the tools included in FCS:
    - Export your NTSC timeline through Compressor using the Advanced Format Conversion preset: DV PAL (or the PAL codec that match your sequence settings).
    - Use that new PAL movie in Compressor to get new MPEG-2 and AC3/AIFF audio.
    - You must rebuild all your DVDSP menus assets to match the PAL standard frame size.
    - Start a new DVDSP project, select PAL as standard and rebuild the project using the new assets.
This are the dimensions you must use:
    OUT OF TOPIC
Why you decided to post this question in this forum and not in FCP and/or DVDSP ones? Just curious because I find this specific forum title confusing.
    Hope that helps !

  • Change from NTSC to PAL

I've made a video DVD (wide screen) with Premiere and Encore. I want to make a version for Europe, and therefore change to PAL (and therefore change the pixel dimensions). For some reason I can't find how to do this NTSC dropdown is greyed out, and I can't find presets for PAL with the change in dimensions. Do I have to make this change in Premiere or in Encore, and can you please tell me precisely where this setting is.
Perhaps the problem is that my computer's DVD Burner won't burn a PAL disk?
    Thanks
    kdoc

Boy oh boy oh boy I CANNOT believe anyone has not mentioned IFOedit program for this poor person!
No matter what you do, unless you originate video in PAL, it will look slightly funky in any conversion. That being said the simplest and probably best way to convert an NTSC dvd to PAL is to simply chage the instruction code in the DVD for the DVD Player itself. You'll have to download the free IFOEDIT program and follow the instructions here:
    http://www.digital-digest.com/articles/Convert_PAL_NTSC_DVD_page1.html
I hope you have made an image folder instead of having Encore automatically make the dvd from the original edited file. If not, just track down DVD Decrypter and run your NTSC DVD video through that to extract all the data onto your hard drive. Then follow the instructions in the link carefully for IFOEDIT and then re-burn a new Video DVD (Not Data!) in Nero or Roxio for example. . Unfortunately there will be no way to test it other than throwing it into an NTSC dvd player and having it say it can't read the disc. That's why you just have to follow the instructions carefully and make sure you change everything you're supposed to when editing the IFO file.

  • Converting and burning DVD from NTSC to PAL

I have created a DVD using iMovie (6.0.2) and iDVD (6.0.2) using NTSC format. I want to share a copy of the DVD with relatives oversees and I have been trying to create/convert a DVD formatted for PAL. I have not had any success!! These are the steps I have used:
    1. Under PREFERENCES, I selected 25 fps
    2. A message window came up indicating the original iMoive file was converted from 29.97 fps (NTSC) to 25 fps (PAL)
    3. I Selected Save As and saved the converted iMovie file at 25 fps as a different file
    3. I Opened the Saved iMovie file under iMoive checking that the PREFERENCES was set at 25 fps
    4. Export from iMovie (full quality) the movie (I have selected 25 fps under PREFERENCES prior to exporting
    5. Import the movie file I just exported and then set the chapter markers and save the new movie in iMovie
    6. SHARE the new movie and select iDVD
    7. When iDVD opens, I check the PREFERENCEES and it has PAL set in the preferences and also has PAL selected under Poject Info
    8. I set up all the themes, fonts, etc. to customize my DVD
    9. I then select BURN DVD and I get the following message: "TV Standard Conflict? It seems that we are burning a NTSC movie on a PAL disc. Proceed with burning?
ANY Suggestions or Advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello Morris,
you do not actually have to convert your iMovie NTSC project to PAL before burning in iDVD. just go to iDVD preferences and select PAL as new standard, then create a new project and import your NTSC iMovie. iDVD will do the standard conversion AND encoding.
the NTSC/PAL conversion done in iDVD, however, doesn't produce the best results - give it a try though, but if you're not satisfied with the DVD's quality, consider getting JES Deinterlacer to do the standard conversion. this software can handle directly the reference movie stored in your project and will output the converted movie to the same location, so when you open your iDVD project, it will be in your media pane
JES Deinterlacer is freeware and you can find it here:
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html
    hope this helps

  • Loss of sync converting from NTSC to PAL

    Hello,
I'm trying to convert NTSC DV footage to PAL using Graeme's Nattress filter, but the footage goes out of sync.
Anyone knows how to fix the problem?
    Thank you,
    nicola

Most likely problem is that the timeline you're doing the conversion on is not PAL. You should open the sequence settings for the timeline, and check that it's 720x576 and 25fps. If you're following the nesting method from the instructions, make sure "nesting" is on. Also, if you've not already done so, watch the videos here:
    http://www.nattress.com/standardsConversionMovie.htm
And get back to me via email if you have any problems,
    Thanks,
    Graeme

  • Converting From NTSC to PAL

I have produced a DVD with FCP and DVD SP4 in the NTSC format. Now I need to produce the same video in PAL. What is the easiest way to do so??? I have all the original files.
    Thank you
    David Soowal
    [email protected]

One way would be to recompress the video using Compressor and the original final edited movie files (The ones you exported from FCP as a Quicktime Movie).
After you select the preset in Compressor, change the Video format to PAL. It probably was originally set to Automatic.
In DVDSP, if you have background assets you made specifically to NTSC sizes, you'd need to re-create them in PAL dimensions if you want to do it right.
I haven't done this so I can't tell you how well this works quality wise. I know there are some expensive options outside of the Final Cut Studio suite. You may as well try Compressor since it will only cost you some computer time. If its quality doesn't stand up to your standards, then you can look elsewhere.
BTW, you may want to ask yourself if its even necessary to convert. Most PAL DVD players can play NTSC DVDs. I send NTSC DVDs to Hungary (a PAL country) all the time and my in-laws have no trouble using them. They certainly don't have any high end equipment either.
