From old to new computer : synch problems

Hello,
I have a problem with my ipod/itunes. Here is my story.
I have bought an Ipod Touch 3 (32 GB) two months ago. I have installed itunes on my computer (running XP) and used it to synchronize my ipod (though I use manual sync for music & video).
My computer is now dead (motherboard and disk, how lucky I am), I have setup a new one (running Seven) and installed itunes. The problem is now : how can I tell my ipod touch that this new computer is "its" computer ? When I click on "synchronize the apps" (as it was on my previous one), itunes warns me that it will erase my applications and application data with the library content. I have some important data in my touch (and applications downloaded from AppStore on it) and I don't want to loose something.
So, what can I do to proceed to a clean migration between my old and new computer ? If I start from a empty library, will my ipod be emptied ?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
MD

Soooo...the dirty hack has not worked (itunes is said as "damaged").
I have tried something else and guess what : it worked. I tell here what I did, but I don't guarantee it will work for other users (so if you try it, it is at your own risk !).
1) Full desinstall of itunes (including system directories related to it and librairy)
2) Normal installation and first run. The new library is created
3) Edit itunesmusiclibrary.xml and replace the unique library identifier by the one of the backuped itunesmusiclibrary.xml (don't forget to note the replaced identifier before replacing it)
4) Edit itunesmusiclibrary.itl with an hexadecimal editor (I used ultraedit), search the old identifier and replace it with the new one.
5) Launch itunes normally
6) Plug the ipod touch : itunes should say that there is data on the ipod that is not in the library and ask if you want to put them (otherwise they will be removed). Choose yes
7) Take a cup of coffee/tea/chocolate/whatever you want : the ipod will be backuped and the applications will be in the library.
Now, the ipod touch is synchronized again with itunes for applications. Movies and music are not, but it is normal.
I have not tested agenda/contacts, as I don't use them.

  • Transferring music from old to new computer - 2 problems/questions...

I was able to transfer my iTunes library from my old PC to my new desktop.  I'm seeing the entire content in iTunes on the laptop just fine.  Home sharing is enabled & the laptop has been authorized.  Two problems remain.
    1. I just downloaded 7 new tunes from iTunes store (on the laptop) but they aren't appearing on either PC or laptop when I search my library on them.  Why ?
    2. I have over 4000 tunes in my library but only about half are selected (i.e. checked) for sync'ing onto my iPod.  But when I transferred the entire library to my laptop, everything is checked.  I haven't connected my iPod to the lap top because I don't want everything transferred to it.  Is there a way to sync the laptop with the PC so that the checked content is identical on both machines ?
Once I get this squared away, I intend to deauthorize the old PC.  Please help.
    Thanks !

    Update -
Ok, I've determined that the the songs that I transferred from my PC were actually part of my shared library.  There's always only been one computer in the house so sharing was never an issue.  As I indicated above, I'm going to deactivate my old PC once I get all this settled.  So maybe a better description of my issue is this:
I have over 4000 tunes in my iTunes library.  About half are chcked for sync'ing with my iPod.  Some are purchased from iTunes which I understand can be redownloaded from the Cloud.  Others are from CDs that I loaded over several years. What I'm trying to do is to:
    1. Physically transfer the contents of my old PC's iTunes library to my new laptop and ;
    2.  Make the checked selections the same between the two machines so that when I connect my iPod to the new laptop, it will sync with the same tunes it has now.
Hope this makes sense.  Apologies for the initial confusion....!

  • New Computer - How do I move my library from Old to New Computer?

    Hi,
I bought a new computer and want to transfer all my music from the old one to the new one.
This is what I did so far:
Copied the entire iTunes directory from my old computer into an external hard drive.
Then loaded the entire iTunes folder from the hard Drive to the existing iTunes directory in the new Laptop.
Now, none of the songs showed up in my iTunes Library screen.
So I had to basically drag them from windows explorer into the iTunes Library screen. However, none of the album artwork, or ratings, etc, are there (i copied all those files from old to new computer as they were in the original directories in my old computer, I think)... It looks like i'll have to do all that work again!
Is there a way to do this one shot??
    Thanks!
    RJ.

Launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to the folder you copied.

  • Transferring IPhoto from old to new computer

    Hello:
I am having problems transferring my IPhoto album from my old computer to my new computer
    Old computer
    • MacbookPro 2.6Ghz Intel Core Duo
    • OSX v 10.7.5
    • IPhoto v 9.4.2
    New Computer
    • MacBookPro 2.6GHz Intel Core i7
    • OSX v 10.8.2
    • IPhoto v 9.4.2
Both computers Pictures albums and IPhoto Libraries permissions are are set to "read and write" for administrator and everyone. File sharing is on in System Preferences.
When I try to copy from the old to the new computer, I get message "Items can’t be copied to “Pictures” because you don’t have permission to read them". I have done the IPhoto "repair permission" on both computers and still cannot copy my IPhoto album from my old to new computer. What now? This is very frustrating :-(

Where on the new computer are you trying to copy to?  Try changing the destination to the Desktop.
Another approach would be to connect the two Macs together with the old MBP in Firewire Target Disk Mode. Then see if you can copy the library without the permissions error.

  • What is the best method for moving iTune Libraries from Old to New Computer

    Hello,
Thanks in advance for any assistance you may offer.
My Sony Vaio Desktop recently died and untimely death, so I just purchased an HP Notebook. I was trying to wait out the release of the possible update of the Macbook line. However the old computer didn't agree. This HP will tie me over till a new release.
I've been doing weekly backups for over 3 years with a backup drive from Western Digital. At this point I just want to transfer my music in iTunes and applications from the App store that are loaded on to my iPod Touch into the new computer and then reauthorize and sync.
My question is what's the best method. Oh another problem I'm having includes the latest iPhone & iPod Touch software problem of 3rd party apps not working along with the vanishing of my music on the Touch.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Open up a fresh copy of iTunes. Point iTunes in the direction of your Western Digital Harddrive. Import Folders.
    1. New Copy
    2. Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Change -> <the address of the iTunes library on WD>
    3. File -> Add Folder to Library -> <Select iTunes folder on WD>
Always keep a backup of your iTunes Library file and the iTunes XML Document. If you have those, then it might be just as simple as copying those to your iTunes file folder. If you are not sure where they are, then do a search for iTunes.xml.

Both computers have Windows OS's and I have the newest versions of I Tunes.

  • Transferring music from old to new computer ?

    hey!
so i tried following the tutorial for transferring music from my old computer to my new computer (both of them PC's) and i got as far as the "copy itunes folder into ipod then connect to new computer"
now the next step is to take that itunes folder outta my ipod folder and place it into "my music" and then delete the itunes folder from my ipod so i free up my memory again.
the only problem is i don't know where this "ipod folder" is located so i can't extract the itunes folder and now i have all this memory used up.
has anyone done this before because the PC version of the tutorial doesn't seem to be working. my question is what should this ipod folder look like and where can i find it?
    THANKS!

Hi cynthia I know what your going through the same exact thing happened to me (I feel your pain and stress). You can use Windows Explorer to delete the folder it should be obsvisoly labeled I belive as "Itunes" and if you acidentally delete your music its already on your new computer anyway so all you would have to plug it in and it would sync...

  • How Move PSE Catalog/Photos From Old to New Computer?

I have Photoshop Album 2.0 on my existing Windows computer, with 2200 photos, many of which are tagged and/or edited. I recently bought PSE 4.0 and installed it on my new Windows computer.
Please give advice re: 1)how to move or copy my photo and PSA catalog files, and any other files I need, to my new computer; and 2) import them as necessary into PSE 4.

Preliminary comment is a specific - don't do an import (get photos) over on your new computer. That will not bring in the tags or the edited to original correspondence from your PS Album catalog.
    There are basically two methods
1- if your Windows drive letter for the photos files, your folder structure and your Windows User name on the new system will be the same - copy your files from the old to the new computer with same folder locations. An external hard drive is a good intermediate device if you have one available.
1b- is a variation where you do not have exactly the same folder paths on the new machine but you use the MS Access product to edit the Elements catalog database.
2- if your drive letters, folder structure or user name are different on the new machine - or if you are uncertain of the location of your photo files, do an PS Album Full Backup on the old machine and an Elements Restore on the new machine. Do a File > Catalog > Recover before starting the backup. Also, it is very important that you Reconnect All Missing Files successfully because any files not connected will not be backed up. You can direct the Elements backup to an external hard drive folder or a disc(s).
Be aware that not all Creations transfer as is from PS Album 2; tags and photos are fine. Here are some relevant Adobe techdocs to read
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/330659.html
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/330800.html
Whether PSE 4 automatically opens your catalog or whether you must do the File > Catalog > Open might vary. In any case, I have always seen a popoup asking you to confirm that you want it converted to the current version.
Of course keep everything as is on your old computer until you have verfied the success on the new computer.

  • Transferring from old to new computer

My computer recently got a virus that does not let me log on to the internet. I have since gotten a new computer. I was able to transfer my "purchased" songs that I had gotten from the iTunes store onto my new computer by following the online directions.
However, I could not transfer the rest of my playlist that I had uploaded from my cds. I would like to keep the current order of songs in my playlist and not have to reload all of the cds into my new computer and manually order the entire playlist again.
Can you please tell me how to do this. I have read a couple things that say I must be logged on to the internet on the old computer to transfer to the new computer but this is not possible because the old computer with the virus cannot connect to the internet. All help would be appreciated!!!

Using iTunes, syncing between a computer and an ipod is designed to work ONLY one-way, from the comp to the 'pod, and not the other way. There are free 3rd-party utilities designed to do this, Google "itunes alternatives" and you'll find many possible options.

  • How do I move PS CS6 from old to new computer?

I am getting a new computer specifically for photo editing.  I have Photoshop Extended CS6 Student Teacher Ed, Windows 7.  I would like to know how to move my software to the new computer without purchasing it again.  I do still have my product code, redemption code, and serial number.
    Thank you

You may have CS6 activated on two computers at any one time. Load it onto your new computer using the discs or from here: Download CS6 products. Now enter your serial number. Now go to Help>Deactivate on your old system to free up that activation.
And here is the latest update for CS6: Adobe - Photoshop : For Windows : Adobe Photoshop 13.0.1.3 update for CS6. Apply this after installing.

  • How to transfer elements 12 from old to new computer

how can i transfer my elements 12 from my old computer to my new computer

    stevengibson
To give a safe answer, best to know what was the old computer operating system, what is the new one, and did you purchase an online download to the old computer from Adobe or did you  install to the old computer via an installation disc from boxed packaging of the product.
The generalized answer is you deactivate Premiere Elements 12 on the old computer (Help Menu/Sign Out). It is up to you after that if you want to uninstall the deactivated program from the old computer. Deactivation is not the same as uninstall.
Then assuming no little technical complications of details, you install Premiere Elements 12 on the new computer using
    a. Installation files that you saved to your computer or that you have download from "My Orders" at Adobe
    or
    b. Installation disc from boxed packaging.
Please fill in more details so we do not fall into any unexpected technicalities.
    Thanks.

  • Where can I find current information for ver 12 on moving my Itunes library from old to new computer.

I am trying to move my Itunes from Windows 7 Computer to a New Windows 7 Computer. None of the online information post seem to show how to do this with the newest ver of Itunes.
In addtion after it does get moved how to deal with associating my Iphone 5 and Ipad to new computer library.

The process is the same for iTunes 12 as it was for previous versions.  Note that some of the "guidance" available online describes how to move your media from one computer to another without replicating the complete library structure and content.  Doing the latter is essential if you want to preserve playlists, ratings, play counts, etc.
As long as your library is in the standard structure (typically under C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes), with all your media contained within the iTunes Media folder in a structure like this:
you can copy the complete iTunes folder from your old computer to the equivalent location on the new one.  Then, to make sure you're connecting to the right iTunes library database, hold down SHIFT when you start iTunes on the new computer and when you see this prompt:
click on Choose Library..., navigate to the iTunes folder you just copied, select the iTunes Library.itl folder you'll find there, and click Open.
If your library is not structured as above - and particularly if some or all of your media is not contained in the iTunes Media folder - see turingtest2's user tip on Make a split library portable for the steps that will modify the layout of your library to make it so.
This method results in a complete replica of the library that was on your old computer on the new one - this means that your iDevices will sync correctly on the new machine without having to make any further changes,

  • From old to new computer- how do i keep my playlist folders in the transfer

I went from a g4 to mac mini, they are not networked. I have all my music files on ext. hd. so when i went to my mac mini everything did its thing except I lost all my playlist. I really don't want to spend time recreating them but I do want them. What is the easiest way to do this?

When I went from my PowerBook G3 to my Mini, I had the Setup Assistant move all of my account info. When I launched iTunes, there was no change in my Library. All of my music has been on an external drive.
I'm not sure how your situation is different from mine. My iTunes Library file on my new computer was the same one which had been on my old computer.
Did you already have iTunes on the Mini before transferring your setup?
I think what you need to do is locate the copy of your iTunes Library from the G4 and use it to open iTunes. Shift-launch iTunes and select that library. Alternatively, you can import that library file, and all of the playlists should be there.
And if the old computer still has the data, you can export your library/playlist and copy that file onto your new Mac for importing.
