From one iMac to another...

hi guys
the day has arrived ( drum roll & blow horns !!.. ) : i'm getting my 27'', i7 iMac tomorrow morning !
O.K. those were the good news, now the bad ones & my reason to panic : i have my extensive iTunes library in two Western Digital My Books ( 2TB each , mirrored..) after disconnecting them from my old faithful 20'' iMac ( easy, just eject them right ?..) & connecting them to my new computer ( by means of a powered Logitech USB hub.. ) how do i do to set it up so when i first open iTunes, everything is there as if i was using the very same machine ?
Please explain it to me in idiot-proof terms, O.K. ? yes : step by step, preferably in capital/bold letters
any help WILL be much appreciated, thanks
Nuno
P.S.: how to transfer my iPhoto library would also be neat.....but i don't want to transfer the whole thing

When you first turn on the new machine it will ask if you want to transfer information from an older Mac. This is called Migration Assistant, your new iMac will give you instructions how to do it. You will need to connect the two machines together using a Firewire (or Firewire 800) cable. The new machine uses FW 800, your old machine may also have a FW 800 port, however you should easily be able to tell by looking in the old machines manual. If it has a FW 800 cable you will need a cable like this, if not you will need a cable like this.
Once connected simply follow the on screen directions and you will be all set.
If you don't want to use Migration Assistant then once you have the new machine up and running and it's physically connected to the drives where your iTunes library resides then:
1. Launch iTunes
2. Open iTunes Preferences (Command ,)
3. Click the Advanced icon
4. Where it says iTunes Media Folder Location you will need to input the path the library is and then click Change. To locate the name of that location in Finder click the external drive it's on, navigate to the library and look at the bottom of the screen and it will tell you the complete path.
Last if you get lost simply call Apple and they will help you out, you have 90 days of free telephone support.
Regards,
Roger

Copy the whole Library, delete what you don't want later.

  • Streaming Movie from one iMac to another

I hope this is a quick issue.
I have had a Mac Mini for several years connected in our family room to a Sony TV. We use iTunes to watch movies and it works very well.  I have a 2 terabit external drive (iomega) with Firewire, but at this point the Itunes library is on the Mac Mini's hard drive.
I have another mac (27 inch) which has a larger hard drive and a Thunderbolt 6 TV Raid (3 tb mirror).  I curently have the itunes library on that mac located on my 256 gig SD drive (second hard drive is 2 TB disk).
I was planning on moving the itunes library to the RAID and running movies in the family room via home sharing.
So last night we tried to watch a movie stored on my SD drive accross the wired network to the family room. It played fine for about 5 minutes and then just stopped.  When I tried to restart the movie the Mac Mini said I could not because home sharing was not on!  I checked it was.
I then used the finder to log onto that mac again and the movie showed up in the shared section on iTunes but again would not play for more than a few minutes.
So what am I doing wrong?
I was considering getting an Apple TV for the bedroom, but if I cannot successfully stream a movied from one mac to another on the WIRED network, what chance will I have with a WIFI connected Apply TV??

    Found the problem.
    D'ooh
Had wifi and wired network connection running!
I turned off wifi on the Mac mini and it works fine.
Also tested wifi streaming with a Mac book and it works fine.

  • How do I transfer files from one iMac to another

I have an Intel iMac (2007ish) that has started playing up.  I can no longer start the machine but it will start in Target Disk Mode.
I have just bought another iMac (brand new 2014), have set it up and was wondering how I now get the files from one to the other.  Usually I know Migration Assistant can be used but as I cannot start the other machine I cannot use this option.  So far as I know, the only option now is to use the Target Disk Mode feature but how do I now get the files and what files do I need to get?
Any help and advice would be appreciated for my predicament?
    Many thanks.
    Stefan

If you backed up the old machine using Time Machine or created a bootable clone then simply connect the old machine backup HD to the new machine and launch Migration Assistant (Applications - Utilities - Migration Assistant) and follow the on-screen prompts. If you never created a back up then follow Rudegar's advice and whatever you do begin backing up the new machine immediately. There is absolutely no reason for not having a backup!

  • Swapping Parts from One iMac to Another

I have a 17" flat panel iMac with the articulating arm (800MHz/1024MB/80HD) with a Super Drive. I purchased it a little over three years ago with an extended Apple Care package that expired in August 2005, after which both the articulating neck device went bad (the panel won't stay into position, so I prop it up with something), and just a few days ago, the computer crashed altogether (black screen, won't boot up).
I took it to the local Apple store and had it chedked out at the ""Genius Bar," and was told that the problem appears to be a defective "logic board." The technician said he couldn't confirm that was the problem until I paid to have it fixed, but he said he was reasonably sure it was the logic board. The cost to fix the logic board is $800, assuming that is the problem.
The cost to fix the articulating arm is another $800, which I found out a couple of months ago when it first failed.
So, here I am with a three-year-old iMac that I originally paid $2,200 for, that is loaded up with software such as Pagemaker 7.0, and I'm faced with $1,600 in repairs to make it right. My problem is two-fold. A) I don't want to spend $1,600 to restore the computer, and B) I have a lot of data that I hadn't backed up that I need to retrieve.
I am a long-time PC user and only purchased this iMac because my son-in-law, an avid Mac Fanatic, insisted I would get better results (I publish a magazine and maintain a website, among other things) and no crashes (not true, less crashes than PC but still craches). But now I have a fortune in Apple/OS software and tons of files that I need to access in this iMac. So here are my questions:
    A) Can I purchase a similar model for a few hundred dollars on eBay and swap the hard drive from my iMac into the purchased one? This would solve both problems (bad logic board and defective articulating arm);
    Or
    B) Can I purchase a similar model on eBay and swap the logic board from the purchased iMac with my defective iMac (which would give me access to my software and data files in my existing iMac, but would not fix the articulating arm problem). If this is doable, could I also switch the articulating arm? What about the Super Drive, if the unit comes with a Combo Drive?
    C) Are these parts easily snapped in and out as is the case with PCs? Or is this type of work beyond the capabilities of a layman like myself?
    D) If any of these solutions are feasible, do I have to buy a used iMac EXACTLY configured the same as mine (800MGz/1024MB/80HO/Super Drive)? Or will the hardware from my iMac work in any of the flat panel articulating arm iMacs. Also, will I be able to plug the RAM from my iMac into a lesser configured iMac?
If anyone can shed light on any of these issues, I'd greatly appreaciate it. Many thanks in advance.

    Anchorasaweigh,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The iMac_flatpanel.pdf link on Apple Macintosh Computer Repair Resources will support Barbara's messy assertion regarding the intricacy of disassembling/reassembling the hardware.
    A) If you go this route, why go through the disassembly process? You may end up with two unusable computers. Just use the replacement.
    B) I would have the same objection to this alternative.
    C) As you can see from the link that I provided, the answer in my opinion would be an emphatic NO. I would cringe with fear, if I had attempt this repair.
    D) I cant come close to answering this question, but if you are interested in an opinion, I believe that there will be some, but few acceptable differences.
The tone of your missive indicates that you do not want to hear about other options, but I would avoid the cannibalization process that you are contemplating. It will be risky and fraught with pitfalls. If your son-in-law has any remaining credibility, and you wish to continue with the Mac OS, I would recommend that you consider a Refurbished iMac G5 1.8GHz/ 256MB/ 160GB/ SuperDrive/ 56K/ 20-inch, which when I made this link could be obtained for $1,149.00. I purchased an iMac DV SE through Apple Certified Refurbished Products in 2000 and have been totally satisfied with the reliability.
Whatever you decide, I believe that you should be able to recover your data through Firewire Target Disk Mode.
    Good Luck,
    Go Navy.

  • Migration of photos from one iMac to another

Recently, I bought a new iMac and used the Migration Assistant to transfer files.  When I opened iPhoto, all of the pictures were there, but all my events were gone.  I had to recreate events for over 7,000 pictures.  A real pain.
I am now in the process of having all of my negatives scanned and loaded into iPhoto (over 11,000 now).  When I am done I would like to copy / transfer all of the photos to my MacBook.  However, I don't want to go through the event recreation again.
How is the best way to transfer everything as is to the MacBook?

Migration Assistant is know not to play well with iPhoto Libraries.  The better method for moving a library from an older Mac to a newer one is to connect the two and just drag it from one to the other as you would any file.
When you get your photos scanned and in their own library just copy it intact to your MacBook.  If you want to join your current Macbook Library with the library with the scanned images you can use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager.
However, if the library on the iMac with the scanned photos contain ALL of your photos just drag it to the Pictures folder of your MacBook replacing the library that's there now.  That's all.

  • Exporting/Importing iMovie project from one iMac to another

I have an iMac in my office and need to bring an in-progress iMovie project home to work on it over the weekend. Obviously, the iMac is not portable. : ) How do I successfully export the project from my iMac at work and import it to my iMac at home? I was able to move the "event", but the project itself is blank.

  • How do I move iLife apps from one iMac to another?

    Hi,
So I have a mid 2010 iMac that came with iLife '11.  The programs came pre downloaded on my iMac and I can't find a disc anywhere if it came with the computer.  I just purchased a new Late 2013 iMac only to find it doesn't have any iLife apps on it.  I would love to have these programs as I already do on the other iMac.  I tried dragging iDVD to my external and transferring, which seemed to work, only iDVD won't actually create a new project.... I haven't tried any of the other programs yet (Garage Band, iMovie, iPhoto) as I want to know for sure how to successfully do this.  As I stated, I did not purchase iLife from the internet, so I cannot just redownload to the new iMac.  If you know how to do this, if you could give me a detailed breakdown of why I need to do it would be much appreciated, thank you! (also not sure if I posted in the right community...)

All new Macs include the  iLife apps, except for iDvd which Apple discontinued some time ago. You will need to go to the Mac App Store, sign it with your Apple ID and you will be given the option to accept and download the iLife apps.
As for moving iDVD, I've never had to do that, had it on a disk so I've always been able to copy it. You might be able to use migration assistant, not sure if you can specify only one app to move with it. Searching the new brings up some other possibilities.
So basically apart from iDVD you do have all the new iLife apps. You just need to get them from the Mac App Store.

  • How can I transfer/copy my entire iPhoto library from one iMac to another iMac whilst keeping all the folders and subfolders intact?

We recently purchased a new iMac for our office (8 GB memory, 2.7 processor, version 10.9.2) and we need to copy the iPhoto library from our other iMac (version 10.9.4) onto the new one. The photos are essential for our work and there are around 53,000 of them all organised into folders and subfolders and then the photos are manually ordered within the albums.
We have tried connecting the computers but when we tried to access the iPhoto library on the new iMac it says that iPhoto is locked and we do not have permission to view it. We updated iPhoto on the old iMac as we thought that might be the problem but the message still appears. We've been advised to use an external hard drive but we're worried that will corrupt the organisation of the library. We have also been told not to do it over AirDrop / the Server because of the sheer quantity of photos.
Any advice on how to safely do this would be much appreciated.

No idea exactly what you did
    if you followed the instructions
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
then you have exactly the same thin on your new system that you had on the old
If you do something differently - like import the library instead of simply opening it - then it will not work
did you dimply drag the iPhoto library from the pictures folder of the old machine to the pictures folder of the new machine and then launch iPhoto on the new machine?
and to help it is important to use word correctly since that is the only communications method we have - in iPhoto folders do not contain photos - you view photos in events and you can organize them using albums (which view photos) and folders (which hold either albums or other folders - folders never have photos in them) so your description of the problem is not at all clear since it uses folders incorretly

  • Transferring music from one iMac to another...

I have a lot of music in my older iMac G5 and want to transfer some of it into my newer 27" iMac but none of the prompts they say should be there show up - both units have share turned on but nothing happens - is there a simple way, outside of burning my entire playlist 1 CD at a time and then manually loading each Cd into the new unit?  Seems like this should be as simple as loading tunes into an iPod.

Below is the information on how to take the music and transfer it to another machine that will be using the same apple ID.
But as stated earlier there is no way to transfer music to a brand new Apple ID without having to purchase it again as all music is tied into the Apple ID used at time of purchase.

  • The saga continues...Transfering 10.3 from one iMac to another

Well, I have half a lab up and running ..... 10.3.9 on Firewire iMacs 400-600 MHz. the other half are 350 MHz without Firewire. I need to be able to use Ethernet to Clone these in some way.... I feel moderately successful as I was able to get a test 350 to hold 10.1 and then mount the HD from a 10.3.9 iMac. I dragged the system over, then restarted it. Then the folder with 10.3.9 showed up as a choice in the startup disk.
I chose this, then started it, but it didn't start 10.3, but the 10.1 .... I feel close to solving this. I only have 10.3.9 so cannot use CCC as it needs 10.4 to network Clone. I do have another 10.3.9 iMac with a "big" 30 MB HD that I partitioned in half.....
    thanks,

You cannot drag and drop Mac OS X from harddrive to harddrive. Drag works for classic but not X.
You need the older version of cc.
