From Product Management - Introductory hands-On now available

All seven sections of the "Introduction of J2EE and ADF for Forms and Designer developers" are now available on http://otn.oracle.com/formsdesignerj2ee
If you are from a Forms and Designer background and you want to get up to speed on some of the concepts of J2EE and ADF, this hands-on takes you through all of the essentials in a step by step manner.
Regards
Grant Ronald

Today I feel very active :) ... So i like to put some funny replies to the posts I am reading :)
With the recent announcement of Oracle ADF pricing, I guess I'll stay with Oracle Forms... At least the productivity/cost give Oracle Forms a clearly WIN by knock out!

Grant this page is excellent. i have seen it earlier and i follow it up. the best part is the hands-on workshop.
you have to continue this workshop by adding more complex examples for application development it will be very useful.
i am a forms developer. what ever little i have learnt about java app. devlopment using jdev i have learnt from this page.
few request for hands-on from myside
sample population of JTree(a sample application like we develop with forms, select a node in the tree and the right-side datablock gets populated with the corresponding selected node data)
    sample manual population of JTable
Might sound very silly but will be very useful for starters like me.
Your earlier workshops were very detailed one and i expect the rest in the same way. I had only little knowledge of jdev before. but i could very easily work with your hands-on becuase of the detailed explanation and could complete all.
    Thanks.

  • Applications Change Management Pack 3.0 now available

E-Business Suite Applications Technology Group recently released a new product, the Application Change Management Pack (ACMP), and a new version of their Application Management Pack (AMP).
The Application Change Management Pack is noteworthy because it provides three new tools for automating updates to multiple E-Business Suite instances:
Customization Manager automates the packaging of your customizations into AD-compliant packages that can be deployed across multiple E-Business Suite instances. Before packaging, the Customization Manager validates your customizations against Oracle's software coding best practices.
Patch Manager integrates with Oracle Metalink and automatically downloads and deploys different types of patches across multiple (single or multi-node) E-Business Suite instances.
Setup Manager helps manage functional setups that need to be duplicated across multiple E-Business Suite instances.

Application Management Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite and Application Change Management Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite are separately licensed products. Application Management Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite Version 3.0 is a mandatory prerequisite for Application Change Management Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite Version 3.0 and should be licenced separately.

  • From Product Management:  How do you clone your installation

I'm interested in what approaches you take for cloning a production Forms/Middleware environment. So you've done one install, but you need x number of instances set up. How do you do it?
    Manual install each time?
    Some clever copying of files?
    Some other solution?
Please let me know (including version number),how easy/painful it is, and also whether you think the ability to clone an installation would be something that would be useful to you.
    thanks

Edited by: Grant Ronald on Jun 27, 2012 12:10 PM

    Hello Grant,
I am just in the process of migrating a load-balanced OAS 10g Forms+Reports environment with many applications to 11g, and I think that the cloning facility of 10g is really missing now. Until now I have not missed it much because I have mainly upgraded customers with at most 2 nodes, but now I have to do a 4 node installation, and that is much more work without good cloning facilities.
What I plan to do to make the cloning as easy as possible is the following:
    - I first install all software (JDK, WebLogic and Forms-Reports 11.1.2) in the middleware home
    - Then I configure a domain+instance: I create the domain and instance files all outside the middleware home (only possible with 11.1.2 installer) on one node
    - I configure all applications on it
    - Then I just copy the middleware home (+ inventory) to the other nodes (using shared storage for it is also an option)
    - Then I configure a new domain on each node. Although this seems overhead (compared to expanding an existing domain/cluster) it is easier to make identical nodes
    - For Forms configuration I have to create all custom .env files on each node using EM (I have not found out how to register these to the MBean without EM)
    - Then I shutdown the WLS_FORMS and copy formsweb.cfg and all .env files from the first node
    - Other files that may need to be copied: webutil.cfg, base html files (if modified), jvmcontroller.cfg, custom jar-files and dll-files (for webutil)
    - For Reports we do a similar thing: we only use stand-alone reportsservers, so copying the rwserver.conf, rwservlet.properties, rwnetwork.conf and custom font (ttf) files does it
Although this does not seem too much work, it has the disadvantage that you really need a multi-step description of the cloning process, while in previous releases a single step cloning could be performed by anybody. And it is easier to make mistakes and and up with differences in the nodes.
I worked on a large project with multiple OAS 10.1.3 nodes, and the cluster facility in that version was great. Any config changes were propagated to all nodes.
I think it would be a great idea to have the following functionality in Forms 12:
    - Expand a Forms cluster should also clone all configuration (also of copies of formsapp for those who deploy a formsapp per Forms application).
A nice-to-have would be to give the option to create more than 1 Forms cluster in a domain.
    - Give EM FMW Control the ability (as in 10.1.3) to change a configuration property of all members of a cluster in one go (but allow differences)
Hope this helps you for the strategy for the next geneartion of Forms.
    Peter

  • New styles from the TUMI Alpha Bravo Collection: now available at Best Buy

If you’ve been reading the Best Buy Plug-In Blog for a while now, you’ll probably be familiar with TUMI. They do a lot of stylish, well-made, super functional luggage pieces … but this fall, they’re coming out with a collection that’ll change the way you look at TUMI for good.

I was able to place an order for the new 3DS XL MM Edition via bestbuy.com. My order shows processing so all seems well. My question is in regards to when this will ship? I usually use amazon.com for online preorders as they are shipped so that they arrive on release day. Is this the same with bestbuy.com? If not, would it be possible to switch to in-store pickup so that I can get the item on release day? Thanks.

  • Production release of ODT now available

I'm happy to announce that the production release of ODT is now available for download here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/dotnet/tools/index.html
There have been alot of enhancements over the beta. A few of the more interesting ones include:
    * support for generating typed datasets
    * ad hoc SQL Query Window with script support
    * enhanced PL/SQL editing
    * integrated error manual
    Keep the feedback coming!
    Christian Shay
    Oracle

Here are some first impressions of the "Query window". This is just a list of the problems, so it seems quite negative. Some of the problems are small and some are larger. The thing that I think will annoy me most from day-to-day is the lack of a hotkey for execute and that bind-variables are not supported (but we all have our pet-bugs/problems):
    - In the context menu for the connection move the "Query Window" up under open (I quite sure the query window is more used than both "Delete" and "Close").
    - You shouldn't call the feature "Query Window" in the context menu and "Query Editor" in the title of the window. Be consistent.
    - You might want to rename the "Query Window" to "Query Analyser" (for compatibility with sql server)
    - A explain window (or rather a explain tab) should be added (like every other query tool).
    - Sql-statements should be timed, the time should be shown in milisecounds(!) and rounded/truncated (it might not be that percise but it invaluble as a quick guage when rewriting a sql to see if you a going in the right direction). For extra points show any "long ops" messages/status at regular intervals. Maybe it would be very interesting (powerfull) to see "buffer gets" next to the elapsed time.
    - "Execute" really need a hotkey. I would suggest either "Ctrl+Enter" (for compatibility with Toad), "Ctrl+E (for compatibility with Sql Server) or F5 (for compatibility with Sql Server and Visual Studio). The hot key sould be shown in a tooltip when hovering the execute button.
    - I overlooked the execute button at first. Move it to a toolbar and make it a green "Play"-button (for compatibility with Toad, Tora and Sql Server).
    - When having 2 sql-statements in a query window you seem to execute the last one. Please execute the one under the cursor. Sql statements should be seperated by empty lines (ie. containing only white space) or a semicolon.
    - The "Toggle Query Output" is non-descriptive. Change it to "Hide Query Output" (and "Show Query Output" respectively) and add the little black cross that e.g. the "Task List" have.
    - When having e.g. "select * from dual;" the Query Window and going to the line before that statement and typing "/*test" the whole window turns green (so far, so good), but when adding the closing "*/" after "test" the select-statement stays green.
    - Line and collumn-numbers in the error messages would be really usefull.
    - It seems that you don't provide help to the keywords? it thought that was one of the "selling points"?
    - Intellisense would be nice (but maybe mostly a "cool"/"demoware" feature). But maybe a hotkey for opening the "Oracle Explorer" with the active (eg. where the cursor is on or a the right of) table/view/function/package/... expaned would be more usefull. If the cursor is at the right of the keyword "FROM" a list of tables should be shown but if it is on "FROM" the help with the syntax should be shown. Escape should return focus to the query.
    - Ctrl+L should make the selection lowercase and Ctrl+U make it uppercase (or Ctrl+U and Ctrl+Shift+U for compatibility with the rest of VS.NET). I find that the code, I use the editors "change case"-feature most on is sql sinse I really like sql keywords upper case and identifiers lower case (and oracle ofthe make everything uppercase).
    - Now I see that there is a execute button on the toolbar, but (a) you have made it a strange brownish green (please make it greener) (b) you have placed it in the far left (or that is where it showed for me) in the top toolbar, where I had expected it to the left of the text "Query Editor" (inside the "ORACLE://<shema>.<datasource>/Query" pane).
    - Move the title "Query Editor" to the Tab (that says "ORACLE://<shema>.<datasource>/Query"). This will save some vertical space and make space for the toolbar. The title "Query Output" might be remove altogether.
    - Bind variables doesn't seem to be supported. I think that this is really a problem since *you should make it easy for developers to do the right think* and bind variables certainly is the right thing. You should bring up a window with the binds that are used in the query and enable me to set their type (if you can't figure it out from context (eg. emp.id=:emp_id would probably mean that :emp_id is a number) and their value. Also please persist the type/value for each variable name so I don't need to figure out the id of that employee I usally test with.
    A few non-query window notes:
    - In the spirit of "make it easy to do the right thing", what would be the easy way to call (and get intellisense on) a package function in a the cs-file?
    - In the context menu for a procedure "Run" should be "Run..." sinse it just brings up a window. And you probably want to "Delete" at the bottom (above the line).
    - In the context menu for a view "Retrive Data..." should be "Retrive Data" sinse it doesn't bring up a dialog. I accidentally selected it for a rather large/slow view and really wanted a "Stop" button (thanks for the option to stop after 30 seconds). I think you shouldn't retrive more than, say, 50 rows without the user explicitly saying so (and never blob/long raw columns or more than eg. 100 chars from a clob/long column).
    - The default action when dobbelt clicking a table shouldn't be "Retrive Data..."(!), it should be "Design...".
    - Choosing "Generate Create Script..." (which might just be called "Generate Script") on a produce, funciton or package, should bring up a preview window with a save-button.
    - When opening a function in the "Oracle Explorer", setting the cursor on eg. the keyword FUNCTION and hitting F1, the help index opens searching for "Oracle.ODT.SQL.CREATE FUNCTION", but there is (of cause?) no such topic. If I select the any part of the text in the help index search box and hit delete, I am asked "Oracle Explorer, Are you sure that you want to permanently delete '<shema>.<datasource>.<function name>' from the database ?" which is definetly not was I want to do!
With regards to the rest of the add-in, what is was really hoping for was Visual Source Safe integration and easy procedure calling, but that doesn't seem to be implemented. But then I don't know what the problem statement for this add-in was.

  • From FrameMaker Product Management

We do look at the forum posts from time to time. More so during product planning phases. The inputs received on the forums is a valuable source of information for us.
We also try to have direct communication with experienced FrameMaker users. We are currently in the planning phase for the future versions of FrameMaker. We would really appreciate if FrameMaker users can take out some time to share their ideas and wishlist with us.
We would prefer to receive a prioritised list of 5 to 10 features (not more than 10). And also a short description for each feature. Based on your requests we might want to schedule a call and discuss your ideas. Some information about yourself and your organisation would help us see your requests in the correct perspective. You can post your list of prioritised features on this forum, or send it to me directly ([email protected]). I understand that many of you have posted multiple requests in the past. It would be helpful if you resend your prioritised wishlist.
Thank you for your continued support.

    Product Manager - FrameMaker

b Fix the ever-lovin' memory leak!
It's getting beyond tiresome to have to restart the program four or five times a day because "FrameMaker has experienced a serious problem and must quit"!!!!! There must be two hundred .recover. files hiding on my hard drives.
Move the spellcheck dialog out of the way (or, better, shift the text window) so we can see the suspected misspelling in context. Hiding the highlighted string with the dialog (even another one unconnected to the spellchecking task) is torture.
Some keyboard-driven means of getting into and out of the dialogs\toolbars. When using, e.g., the Paragraph Designer, it would be much easier to Shift+Tab back to the main doc window. Ctrl+M is great for getting _into_ it, but it's a mouse-driven world to get out. Being able to move among various toolbar/dialogs without going to the mouse would be very useful.
Drop Caps at the beginning of a 'graf. The current anchored frame method is tedious, and it just doesn't work very well for the material I deal with.
I have copied a few of Tim Murray's list here because I really like them, in addition to my own footnote and anchored frame requests (q.v. supra). I've flagged his suggestions: "¶", my comments have no flag.
¶ Allow forced-justify of the last line of a paragraph.
I've torn out so much hair trying to work around this (never successfully, btw)!
¶ Don't consider the space at the end of a line as a character when determining positioning.
This has always been a puzzle. I leave non-mandatory space at the end of each 'graf in case I want to add more text later or join two 'grafs. This "feature" often drives a new blank, line between 'grafs. Odd.
¶ If you type Alt+0039, you should get a straight single quote and 0034 should give you the straight double quote.
    b Feet'n'inches, minutes'n'seconds are all straight quotes.
So it's "turn off smart quotes, enter character(s), turn smart quote back on" or the esc sequences. Dumb smart quotes would be very nice. It would even be nice if Ctl+z reversed the smartness, as it does in MS Word. I could handle two keystrokes for the job, but as it is, we waste a lot of time keeping things straight (so to speak).
¶ Wider fields and dialogs. The good news: A fellow named Klaus Daube has created a modified fmdlg.dll for Windows that has nice wide fields for the Resize Selected Column dialog box. You can download it at http://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker20.html.
    Thanks, Tim, this is great!!
Adobe should include this directly in the application. Does it also work (I'm not able to try it right now) for the next issue you raise:
¶ Show us the path. Some dialogs that show paths to files chop the path down to next to nothing. Show us the whole path, start to finish, and let it wrap when needed.
Oh, yeah!!! That's really old technology.
b The same thing goes for cross references.
It's often difficult to tell which of similar strings I am trying to catch when all I can see is forty characters.
¶ More keyboard support in dialog box lists; Shift+ and Ctrl+click. In the "Set Up Table of Contents" for example, pressing a letter should jump you to an item in the list. Some dialogs do, some to not. Further, you can't Shift+click or Ctrl+click either, and the up/down arrow keys don't work.
I, too, am a rodentophobe. Being left-handed may be a part of it, but having to use the mouse to do anything more complex than bringing up a designer just wastes too much time and effort. Keyboard short cuts (preferably that do not involve seven key strokes) are the best way to go.
¶ Do dialog tabs differently. Guess what you can't do? You can't change tabs by pressing Ctrl+Tab!
Once more, the mouse is vermin, and should be avoided any time possible.
    ¶ Quick outline view.
Again, this would make life so much easier.
