From-Scratch Tiger install and Classic

I recently tried to upgrade my iMac to Tiger. I got disk errors, the phone tech said I had to erase and install.
So, I erased and installed, and now I can't get Classic to work.
When I put in the Software Install and Restore disc that came with my iMac, and run the Install Applications & Classic Support program, it runs through it's little thing, finishes up, and then pops up a screen that sais "Welcome to Mac OSX Follow these instructions to restore software on your computer."
When I click on the Continue button, it asks me for my admin password, and then it brings up a window that sais "Insert the disc labeled with this illustration" [picture of a CD icon above a big dot], and a Quit button.
That disc is already in the drive. If I eject it and put it back in, nothing happens, it just sits there at that window asking for the disc.
How do I get Classic back onto this computer? It came on the computer, and was working just fine before I tried to upgrade to Tiger.

That's what had me confused, too.
The DVD disc is from when I bought my iMac. It's 10.2.7.
I had to erase my hard drive to put on 10.4.
What ended up working was re-installing 10.2.7 on my external firewire drive, booting to the external firewire drive, THEN running the "Install Applications & Classic Support", THEN running the Software Restore choosing only the Classic Support option, THEN copying over the System Folder for OS9 back onto my regular drive, then rebooting again onto the regular drive to run 10.4.5.
What a PITA that the Software Restore program from my original system disc won't function correctly in Tiger.
If I hadn't had an external drive handy, I'd have been up the proverbial creek.

  • Computer doesn't boot after Tiger install and restart

    I upgraded to Tiger OS from OS 10.2. Neither the upgrade or the Archive and Install worked, so I finally did Erase and Install. Tiger installed and it proceeded to restart. It restarted, however only the gray screen with the apple came up, and NO spinning gear. After waiting for about 15 min. I shut the computer down, and turned it on holding the C button to see if it would start from disk. It did, so I closed out of the disk to try to restart again. Same gray screen, no spinning gear. I'm stuck. Can anyone help? Thank you!

    Was this a retail version of Tiger?

  • Can I create a startup CD from my Tiger install disks?

    I just found my Tiger install disks. I have upgraded to Leopard but there are some programs I have that only run under Tiger. I had been booting into Tiger from my external LaCie firewire drive, but that doesn't work any more.
    Is there any way I can create a startup CD from the Tiger install CDs without actually installing Tiger on my hard disk (i.e. over top of Leopard!).

    He is talking about making a Live CD/DVD.. You know, where you boot up and run the OS right from the DVD/CD.
    From the CloneX documentation-
    Bootable DVD
    This function provides an easy way to build a customized bootable Mac OS X DVD that includes one or more applications. Such DVDs are generally dedicated to utilities that repair disks, partition disks, backup data, or recover data. Such DVDs can be usefull when it is necessary to restart from another disk to run operations on the main hard disk. The DVD is related to the hardware it is created on, so it’s compatibility may vary depending on the machine used. For example, a DVD created on a PPC machine will not boot an Intel Mac. Contrary to previous version of Clone X, the System includes more libraries and frameworks to try to be the most compatible possible with applications. The drawback is that data will not fit on a CD-ROM anymore. You must use DVD. The System on the DVD is a limited one, and there is no Finder available on DVDs created by Clone X. But Clone X installs a special launcher, CXLauncher, to run any of the applications copied in the DVD.
    Creating the DVD
    First, you can choose the size of the DVD you want to create.
    Click the “Create a bootable DVD” button. Depending on preferences, Clone X may ask for a folder where the disk image used to create the DVD will be saved. Then, Clone X will create a disk image and copy necessary files to this disk image. When done, Clone X will display a list of the applications installed in your Applications folder and subfolders.
    Select any application you desire, and click the arrow button to move it to the list on the right side of the window. Clone X displays the available free space on the DVD, so that you can select the applications you can add.
    To remove one application from the DVD, select it in the right list and click the right arrow button.
    When you have chosen all applications you need, click “Finish Install” button. Clone X will copy applications, and ask you if you want to burn the DVD.

  • Booting from Panther Cd from a Tiger installed Mac

    I have a Lacie FW HD partitioned as 1: OS9, 2:Panther and 3:Spare Storage Capacity and I need to do an archive install of Panther, but I find that the Panther Boot CD will NOT boot up on any Mac with Tiger installed.
    Is this a huge Tiger bug or a bad CD?
    Anyone else noticed this?

    Hi, FastMac.
    I still suspect it's not a bad or defective CD but the age of the CD w.r.t. the Macs you are trying to boot from it: the Macs probably have later firmware versions than that specified on the CD.
    Obviously, if the CD itself has scratches, cracks, or other visible surface defects that could prevent one from booting from it.
    However, you can see if the CD itself is bad by mounting it and then running Verify Disk against the CD using the First Aid tab in Disk Utility. If Verify Disk gives the CD a clean bill of health, then it's very likely the firmware level incompatibility I discussed before.
    Good luck!

  • Read Tiger install and now can't recognize printer. Help me Obi Wan!

    Running a Mac 450 G4 under 9.2.2. I've been using OS 9.2.2 happily for years but encouraged to upgrade to 10.4. I took the big step and bought Tiger, installed a second internal drive just in case, but was too chicken to go all the way: I put the OS 10 DVD in my drive and read it carefully ONLY but did not install it. Now, the computer won't recognize my printer ( HP deskjet 1220C ) no matter what I do. I tried reinstalling the printer driver from HP but no luck. I'm ready to burn my computer, turn OS 10.4 back into the dealer and stay OS 9.2 until I die. What the **** did I do? Help me Obi Wan! You're my only hope!

    The error message shown says " The file will be moved to the trash because no desktop printer exists for this spool file."
    The "usual" HP printer icon no longer shows on the desktop at startup. Reinstalling the printer driver - as provided by HP - did not do anything.
    When I go to chooser the printer is shown there. I select it and close the window as instructed by HP but the printer icon still doesn't show up on the desktop. I am able to open the HP printer utility and can print out a "test page from it but thats all I am able to get.
    Since the last time I printed out some files, everything worked fine. I did have a new internal hard drive installed as a second drive by a local Mac shop yesterday. They initialized the new drive for me since I wanted to use it to back up my original, Apple installed drive and files before I attempted to upgrade to OS 10.4 tiger.
    This is EXTREMELY frustrating. Did I screw something up? Did my local Mac shop screw something up? Does just starting up the OS 10 disk in order to read it do something? Is this a problem similar to " aborted OS 10 installs?"
    Thank you very much for responding and trying to help me. You have no idea how much I appreciate your getting back to me on this.

    Is this a Wireless KB you have? Many aren't recognized until after booting.
    Hmmm, you've got the firmware Update needed for the AGP to install/use 10.4...
    I think I'd try this, worked for me on 3 such macs...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then choose MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Partition tab.
    6. Click Erase & look for Security Options. choose Zero 1 pass."

  • G4 Won't Boot after Tiger install and Belkin USB Network Adapter install.

    I'm sure this would apply to my G5 as well.
    I installed Tiger on my G4 and it restarted and opened to desktop. Great!
    Next, installed software drivers from Belkin USB Network Adapter.
    Restarted computer,
    Screen has firmware 'like" look asking me to type mac_boot.
    I do this and the next screen is all grey with two small purple folders in the corner. I believe one was flashing!
    Nothing happens just stays there.
    How can I get back to normal boot mode?

    tigerswim, welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Did you already have Tiger installed or did you have Panther 10.3 installed? Tiger is not a free upgrade; you have to buy it & then update (for free) using the download updates from Apple. Also, you have to use a universal/retail install DVD (or CDs) to install Tiger. You cannot use the install DVD from another model Mac.

  • Mail in Snow Leopard (starting from scratch, fresh install, POP gone?)

    Where is a good manual/FAQ/Help file that explains how to setup POP gmail accounts in the new Mail in 10.6??
    Did a fresh install on a new machine, and can't for the life of me figure out how to set it up (keeps selecting IMAP by default, no matter what I do, then when I setup a POP account it just sits there).
    How come it worked in 10.3, 10.4, and in 10.5 then in 10.6 it just acts all goofy and won't connect? Is this the definition of 'snappier'? I think so, because I'm about to.
    Thanks.

    Like you I did a fresh install and when setting up my gmail accounts found the only available option of setup to be IMAP. I found the fix to this ANNOYING ISSUE.
    Basically the auto-setup assistant that automatically starts in Mail w/ snow leopard looks to see if you enter "gmail.com" as your selected service and AUTOMATICALLY configures it to use IMAP instead of POP.
    Now I have tried going in and disabling IMAP and entering all the correct POP settings after the wizard completes setup but I could never get a functioning connection.
    The solution is to click the + sign to add an account but instead of butting "@gmail.com" change your address to "@yahoo.com". Type in the correct password and click continue. It will attempt to check the connection but will fail, click continue anyway.
    From here you will have to change the POP settings from the defaults for yahoo to those of gmail. Remember those are pop.gmail.com; username is your ENTIRE email address. Ensure everything is right and click continue.
    Again change the SMTP setting from those of yahoo to those of gmail's. Remember smtp.gmail.com!
    Click continue and finish the setup. Once the account is setup you will have to change your address from @yahoo.com to @gmail.com and you are finished. Your account should connect and work just like it always did.

  • Update turbotax 2013 error can't extract from archive  on install and launch

    I installed my turbotax 2013. Then it said to update. I downloaded the update. Then it said install and relaunch. Up comes this message, "An error occurred while extracting the archive. Please try again later. No matter what I try. It comes up with same error message. I was online with intuit techs and they haven't solved it yet. Any ideas?

    First off, you are not seeing a kernel panic but an inability to load the kernel file "mach_kernel," which is damaged or missing.
    This is apparently because of a file system error (Invalid Key Length), a serious error Disk Utility is not designed to repair, since the repair usually involves loss of data & that app is very conservative about such things.
    It is almost impossible that the update itself is responsible for creating this error but very common for one to exacerbate it if it already exists. This is because file system errors corrupt files when the OS writes files to the disk, & updates write a lot of files to the disk.
    If you have implemented a backup strategy, the fix is straightforward, if a little time consuming: reformat the drive, do a new install of the OS from the installer disks, & restore your data from your backups.
    If you have not implemented a backup strategy, you now know why one is essential: no data you cannot afford to lose should reside only in one place like your internal hard drive. Data is lost every day because of human error, theft, hardware failure, or a host of other reasons. Only a good backup strategy can prevent this.
    Assuming the second situation applies to you, your best bet is to purchase a more powerful disk repair utility like DiskWarrior to see if it can repair the file system damage with minimal data loss. Be sure you read & heed the app's manual before using it! Failure to do so, or attempting to use the computer before the errors are repaired, will almost certainly result in more data loss.

  • Create a report from scratch, add Table and Datasource Problem

    Hi,
    I'm using the latest Crystal Reports Runtime supplied for eclipse.
    I want to create a report from scratch, add a Table and then add a ArrayList of Pojos as the Datasource.
    But unfortunately depending on the ConnectionInfo I supply to the Table I get different errors.
    I looked through the samples and see that I have to supply properties
    like
      "Database DLL", "crdb_javabeans.dll" and ConnectionInfo.setUserName("");
         ConnectionInfo.setPassword(null)
    I looked through the forums and find different set of properties.
    Actually because I am just working with Pojos I would have thougth that something like the following
    would be sufficient:
    ReportClientDocument  doc = new ReportClientDocument();
                doc.setReportAppServer(ReportClientDocument.inprocConnectionString);
                doc.newDocument();
    Table table = new Table();
    table.setAlias("reportTable");
    table.setName("reportTable");
    doc.getDatabaseController().addTable(oTable, null);
    doc.getDatabaseController().setDataSource(myCoolection, myClass, "reportTable", "reportTable");
    So could someone tell me the right/minimum Set of  Properties to make a Table get connected to Pojos?

  • Best install from scratch of FDS and CF?

    We have a new server on which we will install CF 7.0.2
    enterprise and FDS 2. We normally install CF in the server
    configuration (no JRun). FDS being a J2EE app we will have to
    install JRun. What is the best install method to take the most
    advantage of FDS and CF? Should we do CF with JRun or CF server
    configuration and FDS with JRun? What about order of
    install?

    There are a few options that work. Really the only trick is
    that both servers need to be running on the same network sub-net.
    They know how to find each other.
    Personally I like to install the CF multi-server w/Jrun
    option (the 2nd radio button in the installer). Then I can create
    different instances for each project. once I have CF installed this
    way I just deploy the flex war into the same instance so they are
    running in the same server side-by-side.
    When I do this the folder structure looks something like this
    \jrun4\server\cfusion\
    \cfusion-ear\
    \flex\

    Hi,
    I want to reinstall Leopard, so none of my documents etc are on the computer, as if I bought it from new. But then I want to reinstall my apps like Aperture, Office, iWork etc. How do I do this, if I want to use the same purchase code as previously (don't want to buy the software again)?
    Are the purchase codes related to my laptop itself, and therefore I can use this again after reinstalling Leopard?
    Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

    As long as you have the installation serial numbers and the original disks, you should have no problems installing them on your reinstall of Leopard.
    If iLife came with your computer, then you will have to install that from the original disks that came with your computer using the "Bundled Software" install....
