From sleeping now crashing -powerbook G4

Hi,
I posted a few days ago about my sleeping/narcoleptic Powerbook G4- started when I was working on many spreadsheets. Now that I've installed the Caffeine app, which doesn't allow my laptop to sleep, it has suddenly crashed and shut down completely- this was when I was watching a video and opening up iphoto at the same time. For the past few days, I have made it a habit to always shut down my computer if I'm away for more than 10 minutes.
Was this caused by the new app or is my Powerbook really dying? Need new hardware? Or is it time to go to the Apple store to get it professionally fixed?
I have now transferred some files and I have 10gb free space. Any advice?

Will the system start up or is it dead? If it will start up, see the steps below. If it's dead, that is when you push the power button nothing happens, see this Apple note: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
If you have any external devices connected, disconnect them. If you haven't already reset the PMU, do that: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 and if you haven't reset the PRAM do that: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Run the Apple hardware test to see if there is an obvious hardware problem. Find the original OS X disks that came with your system, insert the one that says in small print on the label "AHT Version x.x", and reboot holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. If you have either of the TechTool programs, they do similar testing. Does that show any issues?
While you have your OS X disks out, insert the first one, and reboot holding the C key down. When the menu bar appears, choose the Disk Utility from the utilities menu and repair permissions and repair the internal hard drive. Any messages or did the repair complete normally?
Post back the results and we'll go from there.

  • Computer from Sleep now starts up and shut downs, starts up shut down, ...

Computer had been running this morning and I was away for a couple of hours.  When I returned I found that my HP S5780t was shutting down then starting up again, then shutting down, starting up, ...  Power supply LED shows green, disconnected hard drive and DVD drive and same condition exists. BIOS screen does not show up.   All three fans working properly.  Monitor shows initial HP screen but machine shuts down before anything can happed.  Tried F10 but machine still shuts down.  Machine will continue in this mode until I press and hold the power button for several seconds.  Looks at some other messages regarding this issue but did not find anything that solves my problem.
    Thanks,
    This question was solved.

I called tech support regarding repair options and they mentioned $299 to fix it no matter what the problem.  This does not sound like a bad deal.
I'll wait until my new computer arrives, move the information from the dead computer's hard drive to the new one and then send in the unit.
    Thank-you for your help.

  • Power Mac G4 Wake from Sleep Crash

I have been having wake from sleep issues since I installed Mac OS 10.5 on my Power Mac G4 three months ago. Technically, this machine is supported by Leopard: it's an 867 MHz G4 with 512 MB of RAM. And indeed, the Leopard installer allowed me to install fine, and while it runs slower than I'd like, it seems to run all the applications just fine. The major problem is that it does not properly wake from sleep. Nearly every time the machine wakes up from sleep, it crashes and needs to be rebooted. It may be a display issue -- the screen frequently looks corrupted when it has crashed -- but the console logs have not given me any clues. It does seem to be related to the amount of time that the machine has spent sleeping, but I have had it crash after a sleep of as little as a few minutes. I have a USB 2.0 PCI card installed, but removing that for a week didn't have any noticeable effect on the problem. I'm stumped, and preparing to downgrade to 10.4, as the machine takes too long to boot for me to live with the option of shutting down and starting up every time I use it.
I've been very happy with this machine for years and years and frankly I've never had this much of an issue with the Mac OS on an allegedly "supported" machine. As a last resort, I thought I'd ask here whether anyone has another idea that I can try.

I'm having a similar problem, though with my Powerbook G4, since installing Leopard. It's a 1.5 Mhz model. Everything seems to work properly, but it takes 10 to 12 seconds to wake from sleep. When it is woken, it shows the old screen image and remains frozen for over 10 seconds, before displaying the updated screen and coming back to life. It seems to me that this pause is progressively getting longer. It was only a few seconds to start with, but is now over 10 seconds.
    Any clues?

  • Crash when wake from sleep..help!

I've had this problem on and off, but it's become very serious ever since I installed the latest security update.
Pretty much every time I open the PB from sleep it crashes...what I mean by that is that the screen is black and there's no response from the computer.
    I have tried:
    -Repairing permissions
    -Trashing the power management preferences
-Swapping the Ram (I have 2 512MB RAM sticks)
    -Running various hardware tests
I don't know what to do anymore, but I'm getting very very frustrated!
Specs are Alu PB 1.25GHz, 1 Gig RAM, 5400 rpm HD.
I'm hopeful someone here can give me some help!
    Thanks!

I had the same problem with an Al 15" 1.25hz powerbook. My problem seemed to be related to waking after I had put it to sleep by closing the lid. Among many other experiments the advice below seems to have solved the problem. I now put the book to sleep with the power button and 's' and it no longer opens when you lift the lid, but that is a very small inconvenience.

    Hi Mightdancer --
Yes, there is a way to turn off the function whereby the PB wakes when the lid is opened. I learned this just a few weeks back, reading a post by Ned Snowing of this fora. I've found Ned to be one of the more reliable and authoritative posters on here, and here's what he wrote, in pertinent part, on the subject of how to stop your PB from waking up when automatically when the lid opens:
You can ... tell your PowerBook to not wake when you open the lid. In this mode you need to either hit the space bar or power button to wake the computer. This is what I do as I don't always want to wake my PowerBook on the moment I open the lid.
To do this open Terminal and type :
    pmset -g
This will give you your current power settings and if you look down and check next to "lidwake" it will either be a "0" or "1". A "0" means that it will not wake when you open the lid and a "1" means that it will wake.
To set the "lidwake" mode to not wake type the following :
    sudo pmset -a lidwake 0
… and subsequently type in your administrator password when asked. By typing "pmset -g" again you should see that the "lidwake" entry has been modified and your PowerBook will no longer wake when you open the lid.
Obviously if you want to restart your PowerBook's behaviour to wake when you open the lid type into Terminal:
    sudo pmset -a lidwake 1

I'm having the same problem with a Black Macbook C2D 2.4Ghz. Installed Snow Leopard over 10.5.8 and whenever the computer sleeps, it completely hangs on wake. I've installed the system twice and the behavior is the same. Tried pulling each of the RAM sticks. No difference. Anybody else?

  • How to prevent computer from sleeping when downloading Lion from the recovery partition?

    Hello,
I just got a new MacBook Pro that came with Lion. I'm reinstalling from the recovery partition and I'm on the downloading additional components stage. It has 3 hours to go and the computer keeps going to sleep. How can I prevent this? I don't want to have to babysit the computer for 3 more hours.
    Thanks.

Looking for an answer to this question now.  Did you find one?  I'm about an hour into a 6+ hour reinstall of Mountain Lion from the Recovery partition on my MacBook Pro.  So I can't change the sleep corners or caffenate it or do much of anything but wait.   I want to go to bed and let it install overnight, but I assume it will go to sleep, and that will kill the download.  It there any way to prevent it from sleeping now?
Even trying to think of something I can put on the trackpad to trick it into thinking I'm touching it.
Maybe ill put it under my dog, and her movements will keep it awake?  Thinking outside the box here.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • Another crash when trying to wake from sleep question ?

I've been reading the other topics about the sleep crash but my problem is slightly different.
Here's the situation when the crash has occurred twice:
I get home from work and start up the computer (It’s at the log-in screen). I walk off
Make a drink use the head whatever and come back to a black screen and the sleep light doing its thing. I hit the space bar to wake the computer the screen stays black and the fans come on high speed. I have to do a hard shut down to stop it. When I restart and log in everything is fine. When it sleeps while I’m logged in it wakes normally. So my problem (not sure if its really a problem) is if I let the computer go to sleep from the login screen is crashes. Anything I should do besides not letting it sleep from the login screen? Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, from what you describe, it is a problem.
No problems with "sleep mode" on this end. Are you experiencing any other oddities with your system besides waking from sleep?
    Possible problem areas:
Simple things first - in your User Library/Preferences, move com.apple.loginwindow.plist to your desktop. Log-out, log-in, log-out and try sleep. If it crashes again, see below.
directory corruption - have you verified the condition of your Hard Disk using Disk Utility? (you can do this without having to boot your Installer DVD). Just go to Disk Utility, select your Hard Drive, go to the First Aid panel, and select "verify disk". If there is a problem, you'll need to boot the Installer DVD, select Disk Utility from the Installer menu and run the same test as above, except this time select "repair disk". Keep running the repair until you get a clean run.
Hardware: Sometimes hardware problems can create operational problems. My hunch is this is not what's at play here, however, never hurts to check.
From your Installer DVD you can run Apple's Hardware Test. Boot the DVD holding down the option key. Release the option key when Icons start to appear. Eventually, you'll see the Hardware Test icon. Click on it, then click Next. A panel will appear explaining the Test. Select the "quick test" first. It will probably take about 10 - 20 minutes. Post back if it shows any problem with hardware, including RAM chips.

  • Ibook won't wake up or crashes after waking from sleep mode

I have now had this problem for the last year with my new ibook g4 and I can confirm that the problem is present at OS X version 10.3.0 - 10.3.9 and 10.4.0-10.4.5 . I'd manage to solve it but once in a while it shows up again and i have to solve it all over again. Apple doesn't seem to care although it makes your iBook totally unusable if you can't put it to sleep mode, because of the fact that you can't leave your iBook ON while the lid is closed. Ok as I said I have this problem once in a while but I allways manages to solve it, here are my observations:
Leting the computer go into sleep mode by itself (not by closing the lid) will not result in a crash.
Before a crash the following allways occour:
    1) The system gets highly unstable. Programs (mostly safari, mail and itunes) will crash without warning. The mouse reacts very slowly and lags behind. The mouse lag is a shure indication that the system will crash during the next seconds or minuts.
    2) While set to automaticly connect to favorite network, the airport won't connect imidiatly, but it will take a few seconds more than usual before it connects.
    3) The system sometimes crashes before it can activate the backlight resulting in the situation where people think that the system can't wake up from sleep mode and won't react.
Only forcing the computer to sleep mode can cause this failure (by pressing "sleep mode" or by closing the lid).
What i did to rule out some sources resulting in this error:
    1) Something like this problem can happen when having a bad memory socket or bad memory, so I'd ran Apples Hardware test and memtest OSX, but no failure was indicated.
    2) Ran the usual repair of disk permissions (like 10^6 times ), without any changes.
    3) Tried to reset the PMU (Power managing unit), without any changes.
    4) Also tried to make a clean installation with panther 10.3 and tiger 10.4, without changes. Before installing anything (no prgrams or updates) the system still crashes. Even after updating to. 10.3.9 and 10.4.5 the problem is still present
    The solution:
Well I found out that the problem has to do with to power options. That would normally mean that reseting the PMU would help, but as I already said this didn't change anything. Apparently the system is not able to wake up the Harddisk from sleep mode, and that's basicly the problem. I don't understand why it doesn't crash when going to sleep mode all by itself, but aparently there's something diffrent by forcing the system to sleep mode. Fourthermore it's not so "happy" to change those settings for the harddisk (I will explain later).
    Solution:
    1) Basicly just UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never" , do this for Battery and AC Power settings.
    2) And put CPU usage to "Automatic", do this for Battery and AC Power settings
    3) Restart the ibook. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
Now as I said this problems comes once in a while and that has to do with the fact that repairing my disk permissions can change/reset the above changes. Even if it isn't beeing displayed graphicly repairing the disk permission have reseted those changes, resulting in the fact that the system is crashing again.
So to solve this do the following for Battery and AC power settings:
    1) CHECK/MARK the "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment and put CPU usage option the low or high. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
    2) Restart the ibook.
    3) UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment". Put CPU usage option back to "Automatic". And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
    4) Restart the ibook again. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
So now it doesn't crash again.
I've read all the threads of people having this problem and apparently it has been present since OSX 10.0.0 and when calling apple support they tell you to reset PMU and repair the usual disk permissions, which of cause doesn' work. And there are aparently a lot of really angree costumers, because this problem makes the computer COMPLETLY unusable, but apple has done nothing to help those people because of the the fact there there has been released ZERO patches or changes in OSX to resolve this issue. I can't say that there is something wrong with the iBooks as the several hardware test's indicate no malfunctioning but there is some bug in Mac OSX wich specificly makes the system incable to tell some ibook's how to wake the harddisk from sleep mode.
To the fine folks working on this forum: No I will not send this to apple, they already know about this, and have done nothing (just think of the millions of crash reports they recieve from those hundreds of crashes everybody is geting from this problem). That is why I put this on the forum so that people can actually solve this problem by themselves. If you think it's worth sending to apple, so that this problem can finally be fixed after 4-5 years you are more than welcome to send it directly to somebody who will actually do something about this. And i really hope that giving people the opportunity to make ther computer work, doesn't violated the usual rule "that we are not allowed to write anything that is agains apples interests", wich often results in a removal of threads and ANY chance in SOLVING critical errors.

    sdad sdsdds:
Your observations and solution are right on the money!!
I just was working on an iBook that my father is giving to my sister. I must have started the problem by changing the sleep setting for battery to let HD sleep. After that the fun began! Instability, restart after restart, running Disk Warrior, fixing permissions over and over, etc. I finally zeroed out the HD and installed 10.4. Nothing worked until I read your post.
Thanks a lot. I understand how you feel about posting here, but please be aware that you are helping many people who would be completely without a clue otherwise. Thanks again for your efforts.
Now I can ship my sister her iBook!

  • Late 2013 Mac Pro wake from sleep crashes - which logs to look at?

I started encountering wake-from-sleep crashes with my late 2013 Mac Pro a couple of weeks ago.  Prior to that the system had been pretty solid.  Other than app and OS updates installed from the App Store, I can't think of any software changes that might be responsible.
What logs should I be looking for that could be helpful in diagnosing the problem?  Looking at other posts where people have been trying to diagnose similar issues I see people posting portions of panic logs that show which modules were loaded and might help point to a culprit, but I can't seem to find a log with a panic message in it.
I had thought I'd determined my Anker USB3 powered-hub was related to the crashes, as when I disconnected it from my system I went several days without a crash.  Today I reconnected the hub with just a few devices on it and got a crash. I disconnected the devices but left the hub attached but got another crash.  I then disconnected the hub again, assuming I'd proved it was the culprit, but the machine has now crashed twice without the hub attached.
I'm running OS 10.9.4.  Looking at other reports people reported some specific programs that added kernel extensions that were suspected to be the problem, but I don't have any of those programs installed on my Mac. The problem doesn't happen every time I wake the machine, but has happened at least four times today alone (after about three days of no crashes.)

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Lenovo T440s Crashes During/After Waking from Sleep

    Hi there,
I recently purchased this laptop for school and one of the primary factors was the battery system; being able to switch the external battery on the fly is excellent but I wonder if it's causing some of the problems I have had.
I've had a couple of recurring problems, although disabling "Hibernate" may have solved one:
First, the so far "solved" issue: when waking from sleep (Windows 7 Pro), the laptop went to login screen, allowed me to input my password, and then brought up the desktop background. However, no matter how long I wait (even when it was plugged in/on performance mode), the resume does not continue and the laptop requires a hard reset.
Secondly, I've had this next problem sometimes multiple times per day - the laptop is set to sleep if not active for a few minutes (to save power during classes), but has (particularly when I close the lid, even for a few minutes) crashed either during sleep or during the attempt to resume.
Essentially, I would open the laptop and it would go through the start menu, then say the laptop had been shut down improperly (as if it had a BSOD). Once, it came up with an error message:

How can I fix this issue so my computer isn't crashing all the time and potentially losing valuable project work and notes?
    Thanks,

No response yet? funny, this is reflecting on my experiences ordering the thing in the first place.
Seriously, it's frustrating having a brand new PC crash every other time I let it sleep.

  • Crashing when waking from sleep

This has just recently started, but my mac pro now occasionally (increasingly) crashes when waken from sleep. I've verified disks, repaired permissions in safe mode, reset my preferences, all of that fun stuff but it continues. Attached are screenshots of my error reports. I would appreciate it if anyone could provide some feedback as to what appears to be the problem.

  • My Mountain Lion mac crashes after resuming from sleep

    Hello
My Mountain Lion mac crashes after resuming from sleep every time I use it
It happens every time the mac resumes from sleep and it started like a week ago
I remember installing the new updates for flash? and xquartz and nothing else.
I have also had microsoft word installed on my mac for about 1 weeks before this problem started so might be related to that
Please share with me any tips on how to fix this because I am really annoyed of losing stuff after each time my mac resumes from sleep

I have an iMac bought may -11, and it worked fine with Snow Leopard.
About a week ago I bought and installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2. Everything went fine, and all software worked ok. iPhoto had some problems, but after installing update the system prompted to do, it has worked ok.
The propblem occurs now and then, when computer is waked up from sleep. The Desktop occurs, but no software starts, not even System Tools untlil rebooting the computer. Of course, I can not reboot the computer from "Apple menu", but holding the power button down.
This is very embarassing! OsX Mountain Lion has turned out to be a very big disappointment. I installed id because of iCloud (i have a new iPad, too with iOs 6 installed).
Can anyone help me? Is there any other way to solve the problem than re-installing good old Snow Leopard?
I would not like to do that, I bought Mac because I was bored in re-installing and recovering!
    Thank you

  • IPad crash 4.3.5 when resuming from sleep

    Hi there everyone
My iPad 2 is crashing every now and again when ever I resume it from sleep. I press the button to wake it, and I see the lock screen for a second, and then it goes black and the apple logo appears and it subsequently boots up. It never crashes while in operation, only when I resume it from sleep.
Does anyone else suffer from this issue? I have done a full back up and then restore...any recommendations?
    Thanks in advance :)
    Chris :)

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press the On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, to restart press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).
