From Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.5

Dear people,
I don't now for sure if i put it in de good directory.
First of all my apologies for my English I’m from the Netherlands.
Last week I bought a PowerPc/Powermac G5 with Tiger 10.4.11 (not intel).
Now I would like to update it to Leopard  only thisis a bit hard.
-         I went to Apple premium store but they doesn’t sell the leopard any more, theysaid that I can download threw torrent etc.
-         I have downloaded the MAC OS X leopard 10.5.5 VMware file
-         I tryed to download and install Vmware only it doesn’t want to install, it’s says thatit isn’t supported by my MAC.
Is there someone that can help me out with this problem?
Kind regards,
A. Khedoe

Even with Virtual PC 2007, it only emulates a Pentium 1 or 2. You can only run up to XP and it will take 5 minutes to boot and 5 minutes to open a window. It will also take about 1-2 hours to install. It is best to stick with Tiger since you're from the Netherlands. If you bought a "used" copy of Leopard, it is still "technically" illegal if it has been installed on another machine and the other machine is still working.
You can request a new copy from Apple Care in the US, but you will likely pay a lot for shipping to the Netherlands. The OS X disc would be $129 USD and the shipping would be about $20 USD for express mail. Even if you find a used Leopard disc, it will also likely be from the US. Is it really worth $30-150 USD just to update to iTunes 10.4 and Safari 5? The overall PPC system is still out of date and Leopard will not change the fact that you cannot use modern software.
My late 2005 G5 Dual Core has 2 hard drives. I have Tiger installed on the original 160GB drive and Leopard installed on the secondary 500GB drive. If you are like me, you would need Leopard only so you can run the last available PPC version of Logic Studio 9 and need iTunes 10.4. I really only keep Tiger installed for classic mode, and because of that, as a daily OS it is faster and more functional.
But even with Leopard, I cannot install iLife 11, I cannot update my Logic Studio to 9.1, in fact I cannot update anything now but iTunes because everything is Intel only today. Even Firefox. No amount of software will make up for the fact PPC is obsolete. So unless you need the last 2009 released software to work, stick with Tiger since it can still run up to the 2008 releases. You will never run the latest anything without an Intel chip. Period.

  • How can I upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard?

All I can find on eBay and elsewhere are "used" discs, and I'm afraid of purchasing them because I'm afraid I won't get the full functionality of what was once a "new" upgrade disc. (Like, perhaps, a serial number being registered by a previous owner that won't allow me to fully upgrade, etc.) Is this fear unfounded? Also, I'm only wanting to upgrade to Leopard so I can eventually get to Lion. Is there a more direct way of going about this?

Your fear is unfounded.. As long as you get a retail version (black color, not gray Mac specific) of an OS you get full functionality. There is no registration of an OS disc.
Also, I'm only wanting to upgrade to Leopard so I can eventually get to Lion. Is there a more direct way of going about this?
The Leopard requirements are listed below. To go to Lion 10.7 you need an Intel processor and Snow Leopard 10.6 installed if you want to download Lion. If you purchase Lion on a USB thumb drive you can go directly from Tiger.

  • How do I source install media to upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5

My aim is to upgrade my macbook to snow leopard 10.6 from Tiger 10.4. I bought the media for 10.6 but didn't realise that my macbook should be at a minimum of OS X 10.5 to be able to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
Does anyone know if 10.5 upgrade media is still available?
My Macbook has a 1.81Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 1GB Ram, is that enough for Snow Leopard? Anyone else in this situation?
Any help and advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

Hi hdereland, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Does anyone know if 10.5 upgrade media is still available?
You have to call Apple to see if they still have it available, the Stores no longer have it.

Many just install it anyway from 10.4

  • Audio/Movie-Preview-Icon from Tiger (10.4) in Snow Leopard (10.6)

Is there a way to get the good old preview icon from Tiger in Snow Leopard? The one with the slider when previewing audio and movie files.
I miss the possibility to skip quickly through the icon preview in the finder column view.
(Yes, I know that it can be slided when using the new preview function by pressing the space bar. But I don't want that.)

It's just I haven't seen many "success" stories of an upgrade to snow leopard from Tiger... with working iLife 10.4 apps.

  • Upgrading from Tiger Intel Mac XServe to Leopard

  • Upgrade from Tiger Intel Mac XServe to Leopard Intel Mac XServe

    Hi,
I would like to find out whether if i have created existing LDAP users, network shared drives hosted on XServe Raid, what are the measures to be taken before performing an upgrade? Would appreciate if anyone could help me.
    Thank you!
    Cheers,
    Stephanie

    Hi Stephanie
In 'theory' there should not be a problem.
However as already stated I've tried this at a number of sites and its been a problem every time. Others on the forum have found this too. I think its mainly because of issues with DNS and the config files used. Under Tiger these were /etc/named.conf and /var/named. Under Leopard its slightly different. See:
    http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20071031195155456&query=Leopard%2BDNS
I'v tried numerous things that ultimately only a clean install would solve. I hope ou have prepared your 'ground' well as you may end up doing this regardless of what you decide.
How do I backup all user's home directories?
There should be no need to do this if home directories are not stored on the system drive. Although its always a good idea to have backups of as much as possible - just in case.
How do I backup the entire LDAP database?
Server Admin > Open Directory > Settings > Archive
The LDAP database contains information regardiing all users, groups, machines, UIDs, GUIDs, MCX and passwords amongst other things. Home directories are not stored in the LDAP database.
Is there a possibility that all LDAP users and password might not be able to migrate over to the new leopard OS?
Provided you keep everything the same in terms of DNS, IP address, hostname etc then it should be OK. Although you never know? Its always a good idea to have a fallback position just in case. If you have the facility/luxury of using a test server first then use it. It could save you a lot of heartache/hassle/time later on.
Follow the advice I've given and you should be OK regarding home directories. Basically it boils down to this. Before upgrading or clean installing back up all home directories. Un-automount and un-share the folder used for home directory creation and automounting. Archive the LDAP database and on top of that export all Users and Groups as an extra safeguard.
If the folder used for home folders is on an external drive or another internal drive you should be OK in simply unsharing it.
Will there be any compatibility issues to access the shared folder from Tiger OS client computer?
In my experience I have not seen this. Ideally you should try and have everyone on the same OS.
What I have found is if your environment varies slightly from the 'Apple standard model' then you will in all likelihood have problems. Your mileage may. This is something I think some people who post on these forums fail to realize? It is understandable though as most most people's requirements or environments do not 'conform' to that standard - although it is hard to figure out what that standard is sometimes as the documentation is - shall we say - incomplete.
In which case you are (apart from online resources) generally on your own.

  • Upgrading from Tiger 10.4 to Snow Leopard

Alright, so i reformatted and erased my hard drive and tried installing Snow Leopard but it says "this computer doesn't have enough RAM"...
AFTER i cleaned it out. and now it won't let me eject the disc or get out of the installation screen..
it says to restore my system with time machine.. but i don't have time machine or any backups.
but under my hard drive settings it says:
    space Available: 79.45 GB
    Used: 229.7 MB
i don't know what to do..

You should also read the section in the right column titled - *Upgrading from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger.*
Don't confuse the technical or licensing requirements with Apple's buying suggestion that Tiger users should purchase the Box Set. The Snow Leopard DVD & the license to use it are the same whether they come as part of the Box Set or as the OS-only retail product. Neither one requires anything special of Tiger users aside from the general & feature-specific technical requirements.
Specifically, make sure the Black 2006 MacBook has a minimum of 1 GB of installed memory since most of the "Early 2006" ones came with only 512 MB (½ GB) installed.

  • Upgrading from tiger 10.4.11 to leopard without a cd drive?

What model Mac do you have & what OS is it running? Leopard comes on a DVD, so you need a working DVD reader drive. You have two options. Install a new optical drive, or if you have access to another Mac, you can use Target Disk mode to install. See How to Use Firewire Target Disk Mode

  • Upgrading from tiger 10.4.11 to leopard 10.5

    Hi everyone,
i'm new to this forum and desperate for an answer. Please help!
I am currently using a powerbook G4 OS 10.4.11. I would like to ugrade my OS to leopard. Do i buy the retail dvd of the 10.5 leopard or 10.5.6 leopard?
    product no MB021z/a (leopard 10.5)
or product no MC0942z/a (leopard 10.5.6)
ur replies will be greatly appreciated.
    its me,
    merzeth

If you can get the later version then I would suggest you do that. Although you can easily update the earlier version, getting the later version will make any reinstallations a lot easier and faster. 10.5.8 was the last version of Leopard, so if you can find that version it's even better.

  • Trying to upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard?

My cousin just purchased the white, 13" Macbook - that of course came with Leopard install disks. I tried to install them on my 17" Macbook Pro that I purchased around the beginning of 2007, with no luck. Does anyone know what the reason is for it not working for me?
    Help would be appreciated, thanks.
    -Kristi

Does anyone know what the reason is for it not working for me?
Those disks are only licensed for and compatible with the computer that shipped with them. You need to purchase a retail Mac OS X 10.5 package to upgrade.

  • Xferring iMovie HD 6 from Tiger set-up to Snow Leopard

I'm still using 10.4.11 on my iMac. I guess time is running out for the old tiger but I get on with it very well. However, it make sense to upgrade to SL pretty soon. Problem is I must keep iMovie HD 6. It has 'professional' attributes that later versions just don't have (though I've now forgotten precisely what!?). Anyway, I work with it all the time and am not keen on having to readjust my brain to something inferior.
So, is there likely to be a problem transferring it to the later OS?
I am also worrying about anything else that may be problematic on transfer. I see QuickTime has upgrades since the Pro version I use...

I understand that but will my earliest version iMovie 6 HD which came with pre-iLife Tiger transfer OK to SL?
If you really have version 6, then it will transfer OK to SL.
The problem is part of your statement that mentions "pre-iLife". "pre-iLife" means iMovie version2.
The original iLife contained iMovie 3.
The second is "iLife '04", which contained iMovie 4.
The third is "iLife '05", which contained iMovie 5 (also called "iMovie HD").
The fourth is "iLife '06", which contained iMovie 6 (also called "iMovie HD 6").
iMovie was never part of "Tiger". iMovie 3 was part of Panther.
If you bought a Mac with Tiger you also got iLife, but iLife has never been part of any OS (Tiger or not).

  • ITunes Not Recognizing my iPod Touch after Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

After upgrading from Tiger (10.4.x) to Leopard (10.5.0=>10.5.6), my iPod Touch is no longer recognized by iTunes 8.0.2. The iPod Touch no longer appears in iTunes' "source list" (left side pane in iTunes' GUI).
Immediately prior to that upgrade, my iPod Touch was working great with Tiger (10.4.x). iTunes 8.0.2 recognized it (listed it in sources) and always synchronized with it successfully.''
My iPod Touch is also not shown in the Finder. However, it does show up as recognized in iPhoto.
Any ideas on how to get the iPod recognized again in iTunes under Leopard?

Thanks to a posting by Jim in a different Apple Discussions (forum), my problem is now resolved. Read on for the details.
iPods & Finder. Some other postings incorrectly lead me to believe that the iPod would show up in the "Finder". Jim's posting set me straight on this.
iTunes Not Recognizing iPod Touch. Prior to Jim's posting, I had already read the article that Jim referenced (to remove and reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service per article "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747").
Prior to Jim's posting, I had also read other articles in various "Apple Discussions" (forums) that suggested this recognition problem could be resolved by uninstalling/re-installing iTunes 8.0.2. Some implied that you could just re-install iTunes 8.0.2 right over the currently installed one without bothering to uninstall it.
Based on those postings, I "gambled" last night and simply downloaded and re-installed iTunes 8.0.2 (without uninstalling it first). I noticed during the installation that the Apple Mobile Device agent was also re-installed. Well, my gamble paid off! After the installation (and a reboot?), iTunes onces again RECOGNIZED my iPod Touch.

  • Upgraded from tiger to snow leopard, can I go onto lion?

I have recently upgraded from tiger (I think) to snow leopard, can I go onto lion?
I have a imac 17" 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, I think I bought it in 2007, I don't use it for much but a bit of browsing storing photos and music and maybe a couple of documents.
I have been told by some that if I go to Lion it would be a risk and slow the computer down, so just wondering what you all think.
    Thanks in advance,

According to unofficial sources, you can upgrade to 4GB RAM. I've done the same in my late 2006 iMac 20" which is offically upgradable to 3GB, but I stuck 2 x 2gb modules in anyway (mainly as I had one spare from my MPB). It's dead easy to do, I'm in the UK and bought Crucial memory which I've always trusted.
I believe the Mac will still only use about 3.3GB of the available 4GB RAM, however some people have reported better performance as both modules are the same size and this helps.
Probably worth getting 2 x 2GB given it's not that expensive. You can always keep your old RAM incase anything goes wrong.
I'd do this regardless of upgrading to Lion or not, the extra RAM will help.
BTW, regardless of a lot of the negativity, I love Lion, it speeded up my other 2007 MBP like it was a new machine. The iMac seems okay, although that is showing a few signs of some graphics glitches, but I don't think this is anything to do with Lion, more about overheating.
Best thing to do, is to clone your existing system (using Disk Utility or SuperDuper or CopyCloner) so that you can boot off that or restore it at anytime without losing anything of your setup.
Then clean install Lion (there are instructions about on how to do this, and create a bootable USB key). You can then migrate back your user settings from your clone to the Lion install. Or just upgrade Snow Leopard. Depends on whether you believe in fresh installing everything.
If you don't like Lion, or it's slow or whatever, you can always restore your snow leopard system from the clone.

  • Just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. Mail is now hosed.

I just upgraded (Archive and Install) my G4 800mhz PowerMac laptop from Tiger (10.4.11) to Leopard 10.5.6 using a LeopardAssist (la232) to fool Leopard into thinking it was a faster Mac.
Mail opens but there is no mail. I see my two accounts and it looks like it carried my account names and passwords. But it doesn't show any e-mails and it shows zero signs of trying to get new e-mails. Any ideas?

Wow - were you just sitting there waiting for my post?
I can't find the plist files it is talking about. Is there a way to search for all *.plist files in Mac OS X? If there is I can't figure out how.
From the Finder's Go menu choose Go to Folder.
Go to this location (type or paste the tollowing, then click Go):
    ~/Library/Mail
Move the items named "MessageRules.plist" and "MessageRules.plist.backup" to another location, such as your desktop.
Note: If you previously upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3 to Mac OS X 10.5, the files will be named "MessageSorting.plist" and "MessageSorting.plist.backup".
