From video tapes to canon MVX350i to iMovie to DVD.... which cable?

Hi,
We wish to transfer and edit our VHS tapes to a Canon MVX 350i, transfer it to iMovie and then burn DVDs.
We bought this Canon because we were told it would allow us to do as described. (Analogue Digital Converter).
However we do not have a cable to undertake this task... I believe it is a SCART in/out? Is this correct? What cable(s) do I need?
I don't mind paying for a decent cable and suggestions please?

I have a Canon 530i and have transferred many VHS tapes to DVD.
Youir Canon should have come with a cable with 3 RCS connectors and a 1/8" plug to connect to your camera. Canon has a socket for that purpose and it is marked "AV" and is yellow.
You need to set your camera to "AV to DV out" which is in the stup section. That allows your camera to do the conversion from anologue to digital without actually recording anything.
There is another socket in your camers and that is for firewire. You will need to buy a firewire connector that can connect to your camera and your computer.
If your Vidoe player has RCA connectors which I presume it does, then connect the cable to your outlet sockets (red, white and yellow) into the yellow AV input socket on your camera. Connect your Firewire to your Mac and bingo, you're set up.
When you start up iMovie, you will need to click on the camera icon next to the scissors. Turn your camers to 'play', turn on your video recorder to play and then you will get the picture on your screen. It should download about 9 minutes per clip and will continue until the film runs out or you run out of disk space.
I suggest you download about 3 or 4 nine minute clips, the stop the downloading and save it for editing.

Hi! I want to record audio from a video tape and put the audio into my imovie. I have done this funtion before, but I can't seem to remember how! I am able to play the movie (the video tape) in a VCR which then goes through my "bridge" (DV Converter) and into the computer. When I open imovie and import the video and audio into a "clip", I can't seem to play the clip and record the "audio" in the audio section. Again, I have done this before, I just don't remember how. Can anyone help??

Hi Kim - welcome to the forum!
You would simply extract the audio from the clip - select it, then go Advanced>Extract Audio (Command J). This will place the audio in the top audio track. Then you can delete the clip, and move the extracted audio to wherever you want it.

Clips from edited tape rearranged when imprted to Imovie 11

I am importing Hi8 tape played thru a sony digital 8 camera. The footage has been completly edited and saved to Hi 8. Trouble is when I movie 11 gets it the scenes are not in the correct order/ How can i import and keep the project in correct order?

wow, that would have been nice if I could have copied it :-) any rate there it is. I checked one of the three files that did work and they say the same thing. I have handbrake (I know not what you suggested but I already had it so I thought I would give it a try) which so I tried converting it to a new file then adding that. when I added it It processed for a long time then didn't show up in iMovie. I looked in the finder and it is not in the event folders either. but this time no error message. after booting I copied the original file into the iMovie drop box folder and started iMovie and was prompted to import it so I added it to the event and after processing there it was suddenly with no errors or warnings.
This is weird! so it is working now. but I don't know why if you see something in the above that gives you any idea I still would appreciate knowing what happened. thanks for your prompt response.

Best Quality importing 8mm analog and 8mm Digital Video Tapes

I have imported several 8mm analog and 8mm digital 8 video tapes using a Sony Digital 8 camcorder and firewire cable into my iMac. As referenced many times, the quality is so-so due to the loss of half the lines; a deficiency in iMovie 8.
I just acquired a copy of iMovie 6HD to address this. Both are now installed on my iMac.
Would I lose any video quality if I first import into iMovie 6HD and then export from HD to iMovie 8 using the "Import from iMovie HD" option. In other words, does using iMovie HD as an interim step address the "line loss" problem associated with video tape input that exists in iMovie 8.
For diehard HD users this may seem counter-intuitive but I like some of the title and transition capabilities in iMovie 8 and am willing to sacrifice some editing function/capability if the original video quality is not compromised.

Thanks for the reply. So importing first to HD doesn't solve my problem. I need to edit in HD and publish in HD or lose half of the interlaced video.
I am aware that importing from tape directly to iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 loses half the video. I was hoping that using HD as an intermediate would solve my problem.
Guess I need to learn editing in HD.
Could you please just confirm. I have become very comfortable editing in '08 and my first few looks at HD aren't getting me there....yet.

Hi. I can't capture from my cannon video camera to FInal Cut or iMovie. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I don't think my iMac is recognizing the camera. I was told I don't need a firewire, that USB would work if I'm just capturing. If I need a firewire what kind (the one I was sold didn't fit). I'm getting an "unable to locate external device message". Not sure of next steps to try. Thanks.

Forget USB for capturing from tape. USB is only for stills from a Tape Based camera.
You require a firewire cable.
The camera connection end will be four pin and the Mac is nine pin to the 800 port.
Ask for a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. Sounds like you have the wrong one as they can also be 4 to 4 or 4 to 6 pin!!
Also you will need the correct Easy Setup in FCE so FCE talk to the camera, exactly which one depends on what type of footage is being sent to FCE from the camera during capture.

Unable to properly capture HD video from miniDV tape in FCE

When I connect my Sony HDR-HC3 miniDV HDV camcorder to my iMac via firewire cable and use Final Cut Express to capture the video from the tape, I do not get a Capture window that allows me to specify in and out points, I just get a playback window that immediately starts capturing and the only option I have in this window is hit ESC to stop capturing. If I let this capture window continue to capture the video from the camera with miniDV HD tape, then the entire tape would be captured as one massive single video clip.
QUESTION: Is there something I change or do to make the proper capture window appear where I can specify in and out points to capture from tape for each clip?
NOTE: using same camera and tape with iMovie with automatic capture enabled, all the clips get captured properly. I also tried to use the manual setting in iMovie and it worked too.

I have a several miniDV tapes containing HD video created on a Sony Sony HDR-HC5 and Sony HDR-HC7. Unfortunately, both these camera were stolen, and I have since moved to a camera that uses flash memory, not tape. However, I need to get the video footage off these tapes, so I bought a used Sony HDR-HC3, it plays the HD miniDV tapes just fine and iMovie reads the video from this camera just fine, but Final Cut Express does not.
When I setup Final Cut Express, I used the Easy Setup and specified:
Format: HD
Rate: 29.97 fps
Use: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60
These setting match those of the camera and recorded tape. If I use any other settings but these, then Final Cut Express never sees the camera and never opens any capture window at all. Using Quicktime 10 movie inspector on the clips captured by iMovie from same camera, all the clips match this setting too.

My Final Cut Express scratch disk is a Seagate 2TB external USB 2.0 Hard Drive that has been formatted to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This external disk is also where iMovie successfully captured all the video from the same camera.

Thanks for the answer. It makes me sad. I thought using Final Cut Express would be an upgrade to a more robust editing system from iMovie, yet iMovie does a superior job of logging and capturing video from HDV video on miniDV tape in comparison to FCE. Not only does iMovie capture each clip on the tape into it's own video file automatically, it also includes timestamp information in the filename indicating when the clip was originally recorded, which appears to be something that is missing from Final Cut Express. Now I realize that HDV miniDV cameras had a relatively short life span in the consumer marketplace and have since all been replaced by flash and hard drive based AVCHD cameras, but from circa 2004 to 2007, miniDV HDV camcorders were very popular and I am sure there are lots of consumers that must be super frustrated by Final Cut Express limited ability to log and capture clips properly from these cameras.
Assuming I do not want to make a rough cut of video in iMovie and prefer to begin my editing project in Final Cut Express (not doing XML export of iMovie project), I need to determine the best way to get clips captured via iMovie into Final Cut Express and determine if there is anything inferior in the iMovie captured clips that I need to be aware of. So far it appears that both iMovie and Final Cut Express reduce the 5.1 surround sound captured on the HDV miniDV tapes to stereo sound, which is not a big lose given the 5.1 sound was recorded from camera's built-in microphone, but it makes me wonder if the video is reduced in any way by the iMovie import process, examining the video in quicktime's inspector window the video appears to be the same in both iMovie and FCE, but I'll research the answers to these questions elsewhere on this forum and post additional questions if I do not find the information I need.

Hi. My camera is a Canon 600D. And yes my videos are stored in the Aperture library and they are not referenced. Even then I tried to select all the videos in Aperture and clicked 'consolidate masters' and there was a messge that said all 'none of the files are referenced',... so they didn't need consolidating.
I also tried preferences> export> external video editor > choose > iMovie. And then right click on the video to edit with imovie. Even then the video didn't show up in iMovie. It seems like the only option for me is to import the videos directly to iMovie which means there will be two versions of the same file stored in my computer eating up space.

Burn Highest Quality DVD from iMovie '11 where source is from DV tapes?

Hello everyone -- I'm hoping to find an answer that isn't too wildly technical and doesn't discuss the HD aspect of things.
I recently used the Share --> iDVD method and the results were pretty bad. It looked unsaturated, bland, pale, and blah. But any clips with increased contrast or saturation (changed within the editing process) looked jaggy and pixelly. In one clip, I lowered the exposure and brightness of rippling waves in water so they were very dark. It looked great within iMovie, looked like pixellated psychedelic nausea-inducing goofiness after I exported it, and truly appalling on the DVD.
The source video isn't brilliant, but when I make a Quicktime movie of it (using Share --> Export Using Quicktime, i think default settings) it looks OK. (except for those waves.)
I'm using an iMac running 10.8.1, Snow Leopard, and iMovie '11. iDVD is 7.1.2
I also have Roxio Toast 10 Titanium.
Also, I used whatever the default settings are to capture the source video from a now-old Canon DV camera. Was that a mistake -- are there special settings I should dig up?

Technically, it is a different process.
When you use SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE or SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER, iMovie creates you finished movie in H.264. When you use SHARE to IDVD, iMovie creates an intermediate movie for use only in iDVD that is in DV codec (or AIC codec if the original footage was HD).
Intuitively, it would seem that staying in DV would give better results, but my experience has been the opposite.

Audio quality in video imported from VHS tapes

Hi All,
I am trying to import old videos on VHS tapes, using a Canopus converter. The video is importing into iMovie just fine, but the audio has a loud buzzing sound that covers up the actual audio and is very annoying. Is there a way to extract the audio so I can clean it up using Sound Soap, then return the cleaned up version to iMovie?
I am using iMovie '09, version 8.0.5.
I also use Final Cut Express, so maybe it would be better to just export it to FCE and then extract the video from there?
Please give as much step by step detail as possible for both approaches. In the iMovie "Help" it said to extract audio using advanced tools, but I couldn't find a command in any of the advanced tools to do that.

iMovie 06 has some good filters for that.
I also use Final Cut Express, so maybe it would be better to just export it to FCE and then extract the video from there?
Final Cut Express (or iMovie 06) will give you better quality but it won't solve the buzzing noise. I also suspect a grounding problem.

Trouble importing from canon t4i into imove

So I have a canon t4i and I've been having trouble importing my videos from my memory card to imovie, and iphoto wont even let me upload it. I tried converting it to AVI (which took a few hours) and It's still not doing anything. I don't know what to do and it's really frustrating.

In the dialog that appears, select your camera from the sidebar.
Locate and select the video clips on your camera that you would like to import.

Transfer video from 8mm tape onto a Mac

This has already been discussed and the discussion is now archived so I can't post a question there. I just want to be clear:
In order to transfer video tape media onto a computer for viewing/editing an interface in between the tape player and the recording computer is needed.
There are two paths available:
One that will simply transfer the content of the media onto a computer with limited to no editing capability, and one that will convert the tape content into digital format before storing on the computer in which case more editing capability through iDVD will be available.
Cheap path: Eye TV or equivalent.
Professional path: Canopus ADVC-110 or equivalent.
Have I got it right?

The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).

Your workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, so iMovie 06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 is a "lossless" combination.

Problems with importing video tape into iMovie '08

I'm using a canopus advc 110 to import video tapes from a vhs recorder into iMovie. BUT, the process often stops after only a few minutes when I still have a long way to go. I'd like to be able to leave it to work for 20-minute chunks (longer if possible, but I think that's about the limit), but it keeps stopping after a few minutes. When I come back in the room, it keeps trying to import (time in upper right corner keeps going) but had quit earlier according to time on the lower center of the iMovie screen. This is adding to my frustration and time, which is limited. Any suggestions??

The canopus advc 110 will work IF you have a perfect tape.
Look at the Grassvalley ADVC300 it has the ability to compensate for bad tapes.
