From Win to Mac: Issues?

I currently use CS3 Master Collection for Win. If I switch to a Mac, what compatibility problems do I face with current files if I get the Mac CS3 version? Thanks, Don

Hi, I'm new to this forum and hope I am in the right place.
I'm a small town newspaper editor currently doing pagination using InDesign and Photoshop (We own CS3 Suite.) The company hardware is all MAC.
I am interested in setting up my home computer with the same software so that I can sometimes work from home. I own a PC and don't want to purchase a MAC mostly because of the cost.
If I set up my pages using the Windows of CS3 on my PC will the staff at work be able to open and print it from their MACs and vice versa?
We had a lot of compatibility issues when we used to paginate in Quark, but a lot of those seemed to go away once we switched using all Adobe products.
I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with these issues.

  • Moving iTunes library from WIN to MAC os X with Parallels desktop

    Hi Everyone,
I just move from PC to MAC ! I would like to synchronize my itunes library (music and appli) with my iPhone / iPad in the new environment. I'm still using Win 7 under Parallels desktop under Mac os.
What is the best solution ?
Best regards and thank you for your attention and answer. Vincent

I don't think you can do this without using the Consolidate function (which requires you to have "Keep iTunes Music folder organised" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" checked).
However, if you were willing to accept a slight modification to your present set-up I think something could still be done. First you need to look at this article :
    http://lifehacker.com/software/itunes/geek-to-live--how-to-move-an-itunes-librar y-from-a-pc-to-mac-and-back-242468.php
Assuming you've followed that route, you now have all your WAV files in iTunes. Here you can adapt the Genre tag to sort / create playlists from not only what iTunes puts in there, but your own additional Genre information also (for example I've combined all my Soul R&B and Disco genres by adding the SRBD suffix to each separate genre then using that suffix to pull them all up if I want). I also use the Comment tag to store release date (or in my case, Chart Entry date, but it's the same principle).
Bottom line, I don't think you can exactly replicate your current setup, but I think you can modify it.

  • The best way to move 2TB of data from Win to Mac

    Hello,
what is the best way me to move 2TB (multiple files) data from windows to Mac?
I think that over the LAN, even using crossover cable connecting 1GB NICs would be painfully long. (Windows disk is quite fragmented)
If I put windows (ntfs partitioned) disc to one of Mac Pro bays, will Mac allows me to access the date on it?
if I take the disk of the windows PC and put it to [eSATA Hard Drive docking solution|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/FWU2ES2HDK>, will Mac be able to mount it and let me copy the files from the windows disk?
Any other ways of moving 2TB data from windows to Mac?

Being able to read, also means, being able to mount said drive volumes.
Windows 7 64-bit (Pro version if you have dual processor, which at this time really isn't needed that much) would work fine too.
There are programs, some or most have their own limitations, allow Windows to read and write to Mac HFS+ file system volumes; or the reverse and allow Mac OS to read/write NTFS. None are what I call perfect.
Becuase of limitations in older file systems and partitioning, Apple and Microsoft have implemented support for volumes larger than 2TB with GPT to replace aging Master Boot Record (Windows 7 even can't run off MBR with volumes larger than 1.9TB). Mac Pro uses GPT and can boot from very large volumes.
eSATA docking stations. Depends on the interface and controller card if any, whether using SATA PCIe for one thing (you would not ever want to use USB though maybe USB3 PCIe if you can find one), therefore, use internal drive bays. Also, more concern with the drive temperature in one, they can get very warm in my experience.
But maybe you do, maybe you don't, actually need to move data, maybe just have it read-only accessible.
Putting the drive in a FW800 case would probably make the most sense, both now and for further use for booting (backup clones are handy and allowed) or for backup with Mac TimeMachine.
But I would install Windows 7 on your Mac Pro. I use GPT for data drives in Windows and to read from in Mac OS environment.

  • Migrating from Win to Mac

    Hello,
I´m hoping to get my new MBP 13" in a couple of days. Due to the fact that all my computers are running Windows Vista, XP and Server, I´m totally new in the world of mac.
All I want to ask is: Is there any possibility to move my whole iTunes 8.2-library (with all podcasts, iphone backups/programs) from Windows Vista to my new macbook pro ? Do I need an external USB-HDD (formatted with NTFS at the moment) to transfer the data from system to system ? The problem from my point of view: iTunes for Windows stores the program folder, the library itself and the data in different folders.
And, sorry for off-topic in this forum: Is it possible to move my pictures (JPG, from digital camera) from my Windows HomeServer to the mac (iPhoto 09) ?
    Thanks a lot.

After reading some how-to´s, there a a few questions left.
All I want is to transfer my whole iTunes-data from Windows to Mac OS X. Some how-to´s tell me just to copy the iTunes for Windows-content to a FAT32/NTFS external USB-HDD besides the *.itl-file (=iTunes library) to the MAC OS folders. Another how-to tells me to export the library under Windows to a *.XML-file. Afterwards I would have to change the drive-letter like C: to the MAC-format - that´s all. No *.itl-file, just copying the content to the MAC-folder and importing the library-XML-file into iTunes for MAC.
Could someone help me out ? Which promises to be the better way ?
On Choosing the *.itl-way: Do I have to change pathes ? Does it contain pathes/drive letters ?
    Thanks.

  • Just bought a mac.. want to change the ipod from win to mac

how can i do that and save the playlist, purchases, etc ??

You can transfer all of your song files from iPod to Mac using a third-party utility. Macs can read the Windows format, so it should work even if the iPod is formatted for Windows.
The free utility of choice for Mac seems to be Senuti.

(just noticed it's now shareware, but there is a 30-day trial).

  • Changing plat forms from Win to Mac, Can we move 6 x Win licensed versions of Acrobat Pro 9 to Mac?

We have 6 x Win Acrobat 9 Pro licenses - Any recommendations on how we could utilise these licensed versions on the new system and or is there an upgrade path?

There is no normal upgrade path, all usual purchases stay in the same platform. So you could upgrade to Acrobat Pro 11 for Windows.
However, there is such a thing as a "crossgrade" to cross platforms. If you had Acrobat Pro 11 for Windows, and contacted Adobe they MIGHT sell a crossgrade. Equally they MIGHT sell you a crossgrade from Acrobat Pro 9 Windows to Acrobat Pro 11 Mac. They will not sell, so far as we hear, a crossgrade from Acrobat Pro 9 Windows to Acrobat Pro 9 Mac; licenses for unsupported versions are never sold.
You might also want to look at volume licensing.

  • Photoshop files from win to mac?

    hallo!
i'm waiting for my imac to come and in the meantime i'm making a cd cover in photoshop 5.0 on a win98SE.
my platform kind of s*°ks and i try hard to work with big files, but now in less then a week my iMac G5 will be here and i'll start to finish the job of the cd with it...(so glad about it).
does someone have an idea if could be a problem to transfer the .psd files from photoshop 5.0 win to a photoshop cs on mac?
I really hope is gonna work!
    Thanx for any reply!
    Pietro

you're saying that i can save the file with that option, maybe?
You actually don't have a choice. All Windows files have an extension so the OS knows what application it's related to. To make Windows look more like a Mac (OS 9 and earlier at the time), they designed Windows '95 and later to hide known extensions. So even if you don't see .psd at the end of your document name, it's there. Just be aware that because it's hidden, it may look on the CD to the Mac as if it has no extension. That's no problem though. Just add it after you've copied the file off of the CD onto your Mac by renaming the file.
how can i rasterize my font layers to maintain the design?
I can't remember if Photoshop 5 has that option. But it would be Layer>Rasterize>Type.
or maybe i better get the equivalent fonts for mac on internet?
If it's a free font anyway, then sure. Otherwise, rasterizing the font layers will work just fine.

  • Need to switch from Win to Mac

I have been trying for over two weeks to get adobe to switch over my license from CS3 for Windows to CS3 Mac. I waited on the phone for over an hour then later for over two hours until my battery died for customer service area to answer.  And I have sent numerous web requests.
Customer Service tells me to contact Sales; Sales tells me to contact Customer Support.
At one point, I really thought someone had read my request because they instructed me to fill out a Letter of Destruction - I did, but the request died in place shortly thereafter.
I then submitted a new request (for someone to check on the original request ticket) because no on would respond to the original one (I assumed that it was just lost in limbo - it happens).
The customer service rep then sent me a letter saying to contact Sales and that he had closed out the request since it was resolved.  I guess it was about to reach their service level threshold and he needed to maintain "good numbers."
I have searched the web and I know that Adobe's customer service seems to be  ranked at the very bottom, but any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I could use a mailing address or email for Shantanu Narayen (CEO/President) or John Warnock (co-chairman) if anyone has it.  It really is at a point that it would be easier to obtain an illegal license than to try to maintain a legal copy, which is really saying something.  Please email me at [email protected]

The suggestion from skullmaker that referenced the open letter from Adobe to their customers and the adbecare email address was very helpful.
I emailed them and briefly explained my issue (not always easy when you are frustrated and you want to send them a blow-by-blow time line description of everything that happened).
Adobe called me back within 24 hours and acknowledged that their current customer support process is not meeting their customer service goals and that they are actively working to correct the deficiencies.
The individual that I spoke with was very polite (Tracy M) and understanding, and stated that she would resolve my problem personally.  She also provided her direct contact information should I have any further problems.
She didn't redirect me to yet another unanswered phone number or ask me to submit another LOD or to complete another web ticket - she assumed ownership for my problem and said that she would handle everything to get my issue resolved.
I believe that Adobe knows that they have a problem and that they are sincere in wanting to correct their customer support process issues.  I believe that my issue is resolved (or will be shortly).  My suggestion to anyone experiencing out of the ordinary problems with Adobe's current customer support process is to contact Adobe through the email address mentioned in the open letter.
My thanks to Skullmaker and this forum for helping me get past this problem - I really appreciate it.

  • Error code -51 (try to copy from win to mac)

    Hi,
I have a problem with copying files FROM Windows to my Mac. I am connected through the VPN, I can see files on Windows server, I can copy TO server, I can create folders etc (on Win), but if I try to copy from Windows I always get "errorr code -51". I have MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Does anyone know what is going on? Thankx a lot, Lukas

Thanks for your response. I have just tried Carbon Copy Cloner, I thought I would try this on the documents folderbut I am still errors. CCC gave this.
CCC will proceed with the backup task, copying as many files as possible. Please note:
    • The first error occurred while trying to access:
    "/Volumes/System X/Users/john/Documents/Final Cut Pro Documents/Autosave Vault/1.shingaanie.fcp/1.shingaanie_01-10-12_1534"
    • CCC will make two attempts to back up damaged files
    • CCC's log file contains more specific information about the affected files or folders.
    • Physical errors may cause the backup task to take longer than normal.
    • You can stop the backup task at any time. CCC will pick up where it left off the next time you run this task.

  • Upgrade AA3 to CS5.5 _and_ from Win to Mac?

I am almost ready to make the big step, away from Windows and onto the Mac. I own AA3 for the Windows platform, can I simply purchase the Mac upgrade and expect the licensing to be alright or do I need to purchase a full version of AA 5.5?

According to the product FAQ about Macs and converting to Windows (the sensible thing to do!) in the Information section, you can transfer CS products between platforms, so I would imagine that you should be able to do this with an Audition upgrade too. However you look at it though, you have to contact Adobe directly to find out what the options are.

  • Transfer CS3 from Win to Mac - no upgrade?? really??

    Hi
I've just had a chat with an adobe Rep, and I'm 95% sure that what they told me is wrong (cos it sounds too good to be true!) so thought I'd ask if anyone can verify it....
I have CS3 Design Premium for Windows. I have a Mac on the way, and want to switch.
I was under the impression I'd have to pay to updgrade to CS4, and then switch. But what I was told was that:
    - I send in the letter of destruction and they'll email when effective
    - Apart from that, I just put my install CD in the mac (it works on both) and use my current serial number.
So - no need to upgrade, no cost, no new media - just email over a copy of the letter of destruction.
I've attached a copy of the transcript if anyone's interested.
    Can anyone verify this?
    Thanks
    Kieran

    Cheers
My Mac arrived yesterday, so I put the DVD in (it's a download only version, rather than a shipped box) and there didn't seem to be a Mac installer. In sheer naiveity even tried running setup.exe (!) but no joy.
Other info I've read since does seem to imply that this rep was wrong. Does anyone else know more about the process, or, if the rep was right, how I go about installing from that DVD?
    Cheers - Mac noob...

  • Looking for a procedure to switch an iPod 2nd generation from Win. to Mac

    Hello,
I'm looking for a procedure to switch/migrate an iPod 2nd generation from a Windows computer to a Mac running Snow Leopard.
When the iPod was first connected to the Mac its content was imported fine. However, ever since when the iPod is connected to the Mac it will appear in the Finder as a "drive" but doesn't appear anymore in iTunes.
I couldn't find any document in Apple's support web site about how to properly handle that type of migration.
I would appreciate if somebody could point me to a documented procedure on how to resolve this, or provide any other type of suggestion.
    Thank you.

I would like to know if it would be possible to switch the OS and use the Creative Suite without buying a new one for mac os.
So far I have not contacted the Adobe Support.
I would be very happy if someone could help me with my Problem.
