Fron Row and DVD controller

I use a mac mini as my media center attached to my tv. Recently, I upgraded to Leopard. Couple things that used to work like a charm in Tiger version of Front Row do not work in the Leopard version: 1. for some dvds, the menus are unselectable but they worked fine in Tiger (I understood this is a bug); 2. In Tiger, "Esc" during video playback used to bring up the dvd controller, so I could select subtitles, go to a specific chapter, etc.
Is there any shortcut key combination that will bring the dvd controller up in the new front row? if not, can I customize a shortcut key and assign it to front row? I use a logitec dinovo edge so I really do not care about the apple remote. I have quite a number of dvds that I would like to toggle in/off the subtitles.

That is pretty bad... So why do I have Front Row then? Of course I could play the DVD using the DVD player but then I would ask again, why do I have the front row? I could play my fotos from iPhoto, and I could play my music from iTunes but that is not the point, is it? So is this an improvement of Front Row from Tiger to Leopard? I'd rather have dvd assist to help me play VIDEO_TS and being able to access my subtitles rather than having a fancy direct access to the iTunes and iPhoto libraries as well as DVD player framework and lose the functionality of the DVD player.
Your suggestion is not good enough for me. My mother will not be able to go and navigate to my NAS to pick the VIDEO_TS folder in the DVD player, nor do I want to teach her that.
I'd rather pay, $20-25 to anyone who can make a plug in that will enable dvd player controller to be accessed from within front row with a keyboard shortcut. And I am very serious about it.
For now, I will stick to my workaround. Open the VIDEO_TS folder in DVD player, select the subtitles. Close the DVD player and next time when I ran the Front Row the subtitles will be selected. I do not know what will happen if I turn off my server and start it back up again.

Front row plays dvd video but no sound

I tried several dvds in front row and I can't get any sound from them. I can play avi type movies, music and on but I get no sound from dvd's. I can play them on dvd player and get sound but not front row. been running into alot of quirks since the leopard upgrade. hope they patch it soon.

try to isolate the issue to front row by playing it in dvd player. you may get an error message saying that dvd player cannot run because it is being used by another program in which case you have to go to applications/utilities/activity monitor.app find the front row process and control-click quit process or highlight click quit in the upper left hand corner of activity monitor then select quit. run the dvd in dvd player.app and see if it repeats the problem. if not then most likely it's a front row issue. if it happens again try another dvd player software. if you find that it happens on both dvd player.app and front row but not a third then it would most likely be be a dvd player.app issue in which you locate the plist file in library/preferences/ quit out both front row and dvd player.app to ensure it doesn't recreate a duplicate plist file then move the original to trash then open dvd player.app and try again. if all of this fails and it seems hopeless before going to a fresh install or archive and install I recommend update install. I have used this to fix what seemed to be broken and incurable apps on several macs now with success. but try the other stuff first to save you some time if possible. as of now all of my apps other than those non-compatible with Leopard are functioning just fine with the occasional bump in the road. Fixes are necessary as there are quite a few needed but I ran into the same thing with Tiger when it first came out and Tiger was a great OS.

The hard drive and dvd drive are not recognized on the setup menu for my Pavilion a4316f desktop computer. Could it be a failure of the controller? Can a PCI controller be used to replace the mother board controller?

The Recovery process would erase you hard drive, and attempt to install a fresh OS. Decidely a bad choice if you wanted to save your data files. The Recovery sets are "tattoo" with the BIOS hardwafre configuration. It will not, IMHO, recognize the PCI Sata card.
You mentioned the Recovery program on the hard drive actually requested the installer of the controller (PCI card). Try running from that.

Hi Ravi.
The component controller is visbile to all views in a component. So all context nodes and methods you create here can be accessed from all views in the component. This way you can share data between the views by mapping context nodes or thru method calls. You can also mark methods and nodes as interface so that they are acessable from other components that define component usages to this cmponent.
Custom controller is quiet similar to the component controller. You can define it if you want to group some views with a custom controller for a certain functionality.
If you want to access a custom controller in a view you have to define the usage first on the properties tab of the view.
A view controller is only visible in the view itself. So all methods or context nodes you define here are only accesable by the current view.
The lead selection is in most cases the current selected element in a context node. The lead selection is used by many UI elements to determine which element has to be shown (e.g drop down).
If you have a table with single selection the current selected table row is the lead selection element of the bound context node.
SO you can get the lead selection element easily in any mthod by calling context_node->get_element( ).

Possible to use both Front Row AND Media Central with same Apple Remote?

Dear Fellow Mac Users,
I have just got a copy of Media Central as i want to use it to view movie files with due to its great codec support. however due to its slightly sluggish and cumbersome design i'd like to continue to use front row for my itunes and dvd needs. whatsmore i'd like to be able to command both programs when i want them using my apple remote. is this possible?

Yes. I do this right now - mainly using Media Central, and switching to Front Row if I have .mkv files to watch.
What I do is since you hit "Menu" to load Front Row, I just went into MediaCentral's preferences and had "Play" launch MediaCentral. Once you are in one, it 'grabs' the remote commands, so you shouldn't have to worry about it loading the other program.

Front Row and bluetooth headset

Hi
I'm using a bluetooth headset (no mic) and each time I enable it I don't have sound at all in front row. It works fine when I use this headset and run quicktime or itunes fron desktop but as soon as i switch to front row it stop working. Sometimes I may hear 1 or 2 sound effect when I scroll in the fron row menu but as soon as I try to play a movie or a music, I don't hear anything.
Is there any tips to know to make them work together ?

DVD won't play in front row or dvd player

After installing vlc player, i can watch dvd on the vlc, but front row and idvd player won't play them any more.
I used to be able to watch dvd on front row and idvd, but since the instalation of vlc, it just won't play. any thoughts?

I do not have VLC loaded and can not watch a dvd either, I get a disc not supported message

Front Row and itunes problem

Just got my new Macbook Pro and migrated my stuff over from my Powermac Quad G5. Problem when I try to run itunes from Front Row saying that my library is empty and no songs could be found. I have re - set the music folder in i-tunes but that hasn't corrected it.....I have around 3000 songs in the library which work ok when I open from the itunes icon.
I photo works just fine, but also getting the server problems when trying to load movie trailers.

Same here. I just got my new MacBook Pro two weeks ago, and I tried to use Front Row this week, and it claims that my iTunes library is empty. However, I have 228 songs, and when I launch iTunes normally, it is fine. Front Row launches iPhoto, movie trailers, and DVDs just fine. Any ideas?

Quiting front row and continue to play music

It used to be that front row would continue to play music after you quit it from the same playlist but this isn't the case anymore. If you are using FR to listen to music and quit the music stops playing. Anyone know how to have the music continue to play?

Well as much as I like the look of the new Front Row, I don't like the same thing, That it stops playing music upon closing. The older one (Tiger) was so much better Animation and usefulness wise. It also supported Air-Tunes (my best friend). So I thought to myself, "is there any way i can switch back to Front Row from Tiger (A.K.A. Front Row w/ Air Tunes)". I went on a hunt on the internet and I came across this web site

When typing the code into the terminal field, you can just copy and past for safety if need be.
Just rememeber to exorcize caution whenever using terminal, for it can really do damage.
And one more thing, I've realized that when going to the video/movies section it likes to freeze (though it always has for me for some reason when I was running Tiger). DVD Function works perfectly.

XGrid and DVD Studio Pro

I've searched the net for an answer to this and couldn't find one, although I'm sure this question has been asked hundreds of times before. I just finished sorting through this forum as well and couldn't find a similar question. It doesn't seem like this forum is too active, but I'll give it a shot anyway.
I use Final Cut Pro HD (4.5) and DVD Studio Pro 3 rather heavily. We have four systems and may have a new addition soon. I'd really love to be able to speed up render times in DSP at the very least.
So far I've set up the grid. I used XgridLite to make one of the computers the controller. Through Apple Preferences I enabled Xgrid on the agent systems (including the controller) and pointed them to the controller system. The grid is password-protected, and all agents are set to receive tasks regardless of whether they are idle or not. With the exception of one system (the slowest one), all systems successfully joined the grid and are in "Available" status when viewed with Xgrid Admin.
I presume the grid is properly set up so far. When I try to encode with DVD Studio Pro, however, the admninistrator utility doesn't show any of the systems becoming active. Note that the primary encoding system was the same as the controller system - was that the problem, perhaps?
All systems are currently linked through a 100 mbps network. We'll soon be moving them to a 1 gbps network. I was hoping that the 100 mbps network would at least let me see that it worked, even slightly. I looked through DSP's preferences but I can't find any options about network encoding or tying into Xgrid. I presume that acting as a client to the Xgrid network is a function built into Xgrid-enabled programs (or scripts you'd write yourself).
Any advice? If anyone can say for certain that DSP 3 won't do it but that newer versions of DSP will, I can request an upgrade and probably get it. I'd rather not do that unless this will for sure work with Xgrid, and only if Xgrid will provide a reasonable performance boost.

This post has received a number of views but no comments back, so I thought I'd give a brief update on my findings. Even though I've seen Xgrid as being marketed as something that could be used for media, it is the wrong tool for the job when it comes to Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, and likely other media applications. What should be used instead is a program called Qmaster. If you have DVD Studio Pro 4, Qmaster is included in the "Extras" content on the disc. Qmaster allows for distributed work to occur through Compressor, which Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro rely on.
I have requested that my department upgrade to DVD Studio Pro 4, and may update with how successful it is. Otherwise, if you were like me and were looking around the internet for how to get this stuff working with Xgrid, stop and begin looking into Qmaster.

Replaced hard drive need ethernet and network controller

I replaced the hard drive on my satellite L655. I installed windows and used my existing key code. The laptop is telling me I have no ethernet and network controller. I have tried to find the correct drivers. Since I am starting the computer from scratch do I need to install other drivers as well? Please help.

I'm so sorry, Heidi. I misread your first message. I thought you had restored the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media.
That's the best thing to do. All the drivers and utilities are properly preinstalled. Windows is preactivated.
If you failed to burn recovery discs, you can obtain them from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here .
For instructions, see the section Restoring from recovery DVDs/media, which begins on p. 71 of the User's Guide.

Hard drive and dvd drive - simultaneous failure

I'm running a 2yr 8 month old PowerPC. G4 1.67ghz with 2gb RAM. Until today, it's been pretty much faultless. I have had issues in the past related to installing updates from Mac. ie. on two separate occasions I took updates only to find that the machine wouldn't re-boot. Issues were resolved using install disks, disk warrior and/or repeated booting.
Anyway - today:
I installed the update (Security Update 2008-003 (power PC)). Restarted and all was fine. Sometime later, after considerable use, the machine went to sleep. When I tried to wake it it wouldn't do anything. Eventually a blank grey screen came up with the file icon which alternately flashed a question mark and the finder icon.
I looked on these boards for suggestions. The best one seemed to be boot from the install disks. Unfortunately there is already an audio disk in the drive. I looked for suggestions to eject but none worked. Eventually, I plugged in my bootable clone of my harddrive. The machine took matters into its own hands and booted from it.
Once up and running I ran disk utility to check the status of the internal drive. It doesn't come up in the display. Nor does it show on the desktop or the in the finder. Which suggests to me that it's died.
I then looked to see if I could eject the cd from the DVD drive. i found no icon for the cd on the desktop or in the finder. I checked the "about this mac page" and it tells me "No burning device was found." This in turn suggests that the DVD burner has failed along with the hard drive.
My immediate thought would be that both parts have just reached the end of their time and given up the ghost. I'm a bit surprised/suspicious though that they seem to have done so in the same moment. And on the day that I downloaded a Security Update.
Has anyone had a similar problem, if so what did you do? Can anyone suggest anything I may not have thought of to find my missing HD and DVD burner? Would I be best off going to the Mac store in London? Ultimately, is replacing them myself a realistic proposition?

Have been thinking along those lines. Especially as, when I boot the machine from the external drive, I can hear the DVD drive whirring. So it's clearly not completely dead.

Problems copying a row and pasting it in the following row

In a Numbers table I have 400 rows with data separated each one by a blank row
row 2 has data
row 3 is blank
row 4 has data
row 5 is blank ... and so on.
I have prepared a small script to copy row 2 into row 3, row 4 into row 5,... as follows:

The idea is:
1 select the initial row (in this case row 2)
2 check if the value of first cell of the row is cero, then exit the repeat loop
3 else
4 copy the entire row, move down a row and paste.
5 move to the next row
6 repeat
The first time I run the script it worked until the row 124 and stopped. I tried again changing the inicial row and it worked only for 7 rows. The third time it erased all the cells with data. I've tried closing both the table and the script but the problems persists: in this case it stops after replacing 5 rows.
Where am I wrong?

the name of the document was wrong (at least on my machine on which I always use the name extension.
