Front-End Loopback Test on Catalyst 2955 causes connected hardware to "die"

I have recently purchased a Cisco Catalyst model WS-2955C-12 switch. During POST (boot), the console reports that the switch undergoes what is known as a "FRONT-END LOOPBACK TEST". During this test the 14 port lights on the device light up amber for a moment, connectivity is lost, and after a second or two the lights go off and connectivity returns. We've found that the moment the lights go off at the end of this test, if we have a specific device (with a specific ethernet chip) directly connected to the switch the ethernet chip is adversely affected by this test - the device "goes dark" and is not capable of communicating with anything (including other switches, routers, etc...) until it is power-cycled. What exactly does this FRONT-END LOOPBACK TEST do, and what does it send across the wire that could be causing my ethernet chip onboard the device to go bonkers?
Thanks!
-Danny

Cisco IOS Release 12.1(22)EA1 runs on Catalyst 2955, Catalyst 2950, and Catalyst 2940 switches.

  • Cisco Catalyst 2955 Causes Some Devices to "Die" During Boot

I posted this question in the LAN section of the forums, but I realize this is probably the proper forum for my question.
What exactly does this FRONT-END LOOPBACK TEST do (I know it's for validating the ports for hardware defects), and what does it send across the wire that could be causing my ethernet chip onboard the device to go bonkers?
    Thanks!
    -Danny

The ethernet chip on the device (the device is a National Instruments product) is an STMicro STE10/100E, and I'm fairly confident I now know what's happening but I don't know why.
When my ethernet chip is in Autonegotiate mode, the "FRONT-END LOOPBACK TEST" performed by the catalyst does something where, at the conclusion of the test, the ethernet chip goes into an autonegotiation state and never comes back out of it. I'm thinking the "FRONT-END LOOPBACK TEST" is sending something across the wire that's confusing this specific ethernet chip; I've tried 3 Intel parts and also a Broadcom part and they rode it out in autonegotiation mode just fine. If I put the STE chip into a manually-configured mode the "FRONT-END LOOPBACK TEST" doesn't cause it to "go dark".
So, my question is really what does the FRONT-END LOOPBACK TEST do? Does it perform a remote loopback test (the STE10/100E doesn't support loopback tests)?

  • ERROR 14614 on Front End when testing with Remote Connectivity Analyzer

    Hello forum
Does the Lync Remote Connectivity Analyzer not support 128 encryption?
Reason im asking is the following:
When I test my Lync edge server. I get the following error on the RCA result page:  RegisterException.
After this error on the RCA, the event 14614 is logged on my Standard Edition Front end server.
    INFO:
User authentication with NTLM protocol failed with error SEC_E_UNSUPPORTED_FUNCTION. This indicates a potential mismatch between security policy settings on the client and server computers.
Cause: This error can occur if the settings in "Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients" policy on the client computer are not the same as the settings in the "Network security: Minimum
session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers" policy on this server.  By default, the "Require 128-bit encryption" setting is disabled for computers running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003,
Windows 2000 Server, or Windows XP. For computers running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, this setting enabled by default.
    Resolution:
Ensure that the "Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients" policy settings on the computers from which users log on are the same as "Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based
(including secure RPC) servers" policy settings on this server.
All of our Lync servers are running on Windows 2012 R2. So why this error from the RCA?

Please check your settings on the client and on the server.
I know, this is a old blog info, but it discribed the problem.

Thanks for the answer, but in this case the "Client" is the Remote Connectivity Analyzer. So my question was, why is it not working with that? Does the RCA not support 128 bit?

  • While performing a loopback test, how do I determine wether the connection is RS-232 or RS-485?

I know that for the RS-232 loopback test I should short pins 2 to 3. For the RS-485, short the pins 4 to 8 and 5 to 9. I do this, but the only test that works is the RS-232 one. I was wondering if I had to specify for what connection I was performing the test. All help is appreciated, thanks.
P.S. All of this is for the D-sub 9 pin port.
I'm sorry for posting this message under the wrong topic. This probably has nothing to do with Field Point. Even so, if someone could help, I would really appreciate it.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I found this page in NI.com (http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3450), where there is a diagram of the DB-9 pin definitions for both RS-232 and 485. It says that pins 4 and 5 are the recieving pins, and pins and 8 and 9 are the transmitting ones.
    pin 4 -> Recieve +
    pin 5 -> Recieve -
    pin 8 -> Transmit +
    pin 9 -> transmit -
Therefore the loopback test should be done by connecting pins 4 to 8, and 5 to 9.
Hope this helps you understand my confusion.
    Thanks.

  • Lync front end connectivity test fails (SSL certificate / URL problem)

We have a weird problem in our installation where Lync keeps complaining about connectivity issues to external reach proxy on our front end server.
The event log error codes are 41024 and 41026.
Here's the error from the snooper utility:
    TL_ERROR(TF_COMPONENT) [0]1A14.0EE4::12/12/2014-10:31:30.901.0000000d (DataMCURunTime,DataProxies.ProcessResponse:1197.idx(601))
(0000000001595A27)Failed poking Proxy error=[The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel.], type=[ExternalReachProxy], url=[https://dunords36.du.local:4443/Reach/DataCollaborationRelayWebService.svc]
The problem is that it makes the test with the INTERNAL FQDN (dunords36.du.local) and thus the SSL trust fails as the certificate is for our EXTERNAL FQDN on the front end server! I have verified this by testing the above URL with the external address and
the internal one. With the external one the certificate is OK.
If you're wondering; we do not use a reverse proxy. Instead we just have the firewall change the port and forward the traffic to our front end server. Our lync setup is a NAT'ed setup.
I know about the security risks so this is not what the discussion is about.
I can't find anywhere where i can change the above behaviour and tell lync to make the test on the correct, external FQDN. The settings in the topology builder all seems to be OK. And as you can see it does make the test on port 4443 which in our topology
builder is configured for our external FQDN.

    Hi,
Would you please elaborate your Lync Server environment (Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition)?
Please double check if you enter the correct external base URL on Lync Topology.
Please also check if the SAN of FE Server certificate correctly.

  • Catalyst 3560 PoE Port ASIC Port Loopback Test Issue

    Hi,
We have a switchports issue in this specific switch, wherein some switchports cannot be

This is the wrong forum to post to for this issue but I can still give you insight. Basically when the switch is booting it's going through Power On Self Test (POST). The failures you're seeing basically mean this section of switch ports which are connected to an ASIC are not functional and or have failed. This is a physical hardware problem and can not be resolved. At this point you'll need to open up a TAC case for RMA.

Fix failing security tests on BlazeDS/trunk by using a remote object to invalidate the FlexSession at the end of each test method which should cause each test method to run with a new/clean session. It looks like some test methods were leaving some things in a bad state which was causing the next test that ran to fail. These may be legitimate bugs/issues so we should investigate further to see what sequence of events gets things into a bad state but for these tests we want all of the test methods to run in isolation.

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • 720 GUI causing a problem in Front End editor?

    Hi all,
We recently upgraded our GUI to 720 patch level 3.  Now I am finding that when I am in the ABAP New Front End editor I am having a problem with the Code Hint feature.  I used to be able to hit ENTERr when a STATEMENT was proposed to accept it but  that doesn't work anymore.  Has anyone else encountered this issue?  I have read the documentation on the Code Hint feature and reviewed all my settings.  I did learn from the documentation that you can also hit TAB to accept the proposed syntax.  I tried that and hitting TAB works.  Did they remove the hitting ENTER?  Just checking before I log this was SAP.
    Any info is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi Mark,
Yes, this feature is not available in the new GUI. We need to hit the TAB Button to achieve this.
    Thanks,

  • Lync 2013 On Prem - Front End Pool - Second server in pool becomes unavailable when first server is offline

We have one front end pool, that contains 2 front end servers running Lync Server 2013.
When the first server, LFE01 goes offline (to be restarted for instance), the second front end server LFE02 in the same pool's Lync services will suddenly stop and will refuse to start until LFE01's Lync services have started again.
During this time, the Lync client will go from full functioning mode whilst LFE01 is up and running, to reduced functionality (when LFE01 is restarting), to the user being signed out of Lync and not able to log back in. As soon as LFE01 comes back up, users
can log back in to Lync.
We'd ideally like LFE02 to take over the front end server role whilst LFE01 is restarting, and vice-versa.
Checking the event logs on LFE02, I can see the following errors when LFE01 is offline:
This process was not able to update its health status
The Audio-Video Conferencing Server failed to send health notifications to the MCU factory at https://frontendpool.contoso.com:444/liveserver/mcufactory/.
    Failure occurrences: 30, since 7/11/2013 3:40:38 PM.
Cause: Either the Front End service is not running, or poor network connectivity.
    Resolution:

    Failure occurrences: 30, since 7/11/2013 3:40:42 PM.
Cause: Either the Front End service is not running, or poor network connectivity.
    Resolution:
Verify that the Front End Service is available, and its machine is visible over the network.
Server startup is being delayed because fabric pool manager is initializing.
Cause: This is normal when Pool is bootstrapped and indicates that the Front-End is waiting for a quorum of other Front-Ends to be started.
    Resolution:
If this event recurs persistently, ensure that 85% of the Front-Ends configured for this Pool are up and running. For 2 or 3 machine Pools, initial cold-start of the Pool requires all machines to be started. If multiple Front-Ends have been recently
decommissioned, run Reset-CsPoolRegistrarState -ResetType QuorumLossRecovery to enable the Pool to recover from Quorum Loss and make progress.
Does the first server in the pool need to be up at all times for the second server to be running? If so, I may need to re-plan my redundancy.

I can't believe how inaccurate these statements are.
Yes as per Microsoft it is best practice to have 3 FE in a pool but that absolutely does not mean that if you have 2 FE server in a pool that your pool will stop working!!
In case when you do have 2 FE servers in a pool your Back End primary database server will act as a vote to keep the quorum for single server still left in a pool and all your clients will keep operating in a pool with one FE still running.
The problem with having 2 FE in a pool as per Microsoft documentation is as follows:
If one of the two Front End Servers goes down, you should try to bring the failed server back up as soon as you can. Similarly, if you need to upgrade one of the two servers, bring it back
online as soon as the upgrade is finished.
If for some reason you need to bring both servers down at the same time, do the following when the downtime for the pool is finished:
The best practice is to restart both Front End Servers at the same time.
If the two servers cannot be restarted at the same time, you should bring them back up in the reverse order of the order they went down.
If you cannot bring them back up in that order, then use the following cmdlet before bringing the pool back up:.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg412996.aspx
I tested this in my environment which I currently am running with 2 FE servers and I can categorically confirm that pool will continue operating.
However, with all this said I did notice that clients with connection to FE server that is shut down take anywhere from 2-9 min to reconnect. I was trying to figure out why such a long delay until clients reconnect. Possibly it might be because there are
2 FE servers in a pool and Back End server is taking a while to vote in turn delaying auto reconnect process for clients. Second possibility that I'm looking into is that we deployed HLB for sip traffic internally as well and I'm curious if using DNS LB would
    fix this delay.
I'm just so disappointed how inaccurate some of these accepted answers above are.

  • SharePoint Foundation 2013 - Search Configuration Issue - 2 App Servers and 2 Front-End Servers

    Hi,
We have a SharePoint Foundation 2013 with SP1 Environment.
In that, we have 2 Front-End Servers and 2 App Servers. In the Front-End Servers, the Search Service is stopped and is in Disabled state and in the 2 App Servers in One App Server, Search is Online and in another Search is Starting but goes to Stopped sooon
    after.
Originally, we had only 1 App Server and we were running our Search Service and Search Service Application in that. Now since the index location became full and we were unable to increase the drive there, we added one more App Server and now the issue is
Search is not properly getting configured in either of these App servers. What we want to do is run Search only in the new App Server, because we have a lot of storage space for Index locations here, but in the older App Server, not run Search at all.  We
tried keeping the Search Service disabled and ran the below PowerShell Scripts, but none of the ones are working. These scripts are creating the Search Service Application, but the error of "Admin Component is not Online", "Could not connect
to the machine hosting SharePoint 2013 admin component" is coming up.

    Hi Karthick,
For your issue, could you provide the
detail error message of ULS log  to determine the exact cause of the error?
For SharePoint 2013, by default, ULS log is at

For troubleshooting your issue,  you can try to run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard on your WFE servers and run the script for configuring the search service on SharePoint

  • Authentication with UME separation of front end and back end

My webdynpro project has 2 application. One for Admin one for Rating.
Is it possible to create a java class at Webdynpro level and share it between the 2 applications?
    Why the need?
Created a custom class (lets called it CommonEJB), to point to the right pages and set of UI controls after the initial login with UME. This class utilizes the IWDClientUser.getSAPUset() method to get IUser object.
If it is not possible to create a java class at Webdynpro, then this ejb will need to be deployed to the backend.
Putting it at the backend is not good as security wise, its always better to separate the authentication between front and back end.
    Any ideas/solutions?
    thanks

Well, i wish to create a java class that can separate the view areas depending on their login.
lets say you're a manager, u can see certain views. and if you're a supervisor u see another. This is achieved using the java class with information from getSAPUser() position. After retrieving the position, using the java class will programmatically assigned the appropriate views, buttons, tabs etc.
so this class need to in front end, and not back end. problem is we have 2 application.
if the class is created front end in one application can it be shared with another.

  • Lync 2013 Front-End HA

We are currently in a co-existence environment with both Lync 2010 and 2013 running side-by-side.
There are 2 FE pools with pool pairing setup for Lync 2013. We have been carrying out some testing before migrating all of our users over.
We have an issue where when we take out one of the 2013 front end servers the client does not automatically reconnect to one of the other servers in the pool, occasionally it will but can take 10-15 mins to do this. If we simulate a similar test on the 2010
front ends the client reconnects in seconds.
I am using the Lync 2013 client

    Thanks for your replies.
I have setup DNS LB for the pool name (this is working correctly) and I am using a kemp load balancer for the internal web services FQDN
I checked the EndPointConfiguration.Cache file and it just had the name of the front end server I was connected to. I deleted it and restarted my client now the EndPointConfiguration.Cache file has the name of the pool, the front end server that I am connected
to and the IP addresses of the servers in the pool, is that correct?
I tested the failure of the server I was connected to by removing the network adapter in VMware.
It took 44 seconds for my client to sign out and 1:15 after that to sign back in. My LPE took 2:18 to sign out and 1:22 after that to sign back in. Surely this cant be right?
During the time the failure happens and the client signs out, it is unusable.
I have had a look in the snooper logs but it is difficult to see the wood for the trees.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Lync Server Front End 2 Hardware Load Balancer IP

I currently have the following Setup.
I only have 1 Hardware Load Balanced IP for my Front End Pool.
After running the Lync Planning Tool it actually states that i need 2 Hardware Load Balanced IP, 1 for internal and 1 for external.
My question would be would i be able to configure for mobility and external access with just using 1 Hardware Load Balanced IP?
Because i seem to have problem with connecting to the front end server based on the following scenario.
Without Reverse Proxy Mapping (port 80/443 internet to port 80/443 reverse proxy to port 80/443 lyncpool frontend)
    Internal Access (No Issue)
Lync Mobile 2013 App (Can Connect and chat but intermittent connection) *gets disconnected if i access video/audio
Lync Client 2013 Externally (Cannot Connect to Server)
    https://meet.domain.com (working)
With Reverse Proxy Mapping (Port 80/443 internet to port 8080/4443 reverse proxy to port 8080/4443 lyncpool frontend)
    Internal Access (No Issue)
Lync Mobile 2013 App (Cannot connect)
Lync Client 2013 Externally (Cannot connect)
    https://meet.domain.com (Not working)
Would i actually need to have a additional front end pool IP for external access? or can i maintain it as it is?
I do not understand why without the mapping it can work whereas if i do the mapping according to technet article it won't work.
Everything is running windows server 2012 R2 and Lync 2013, Loadbalancer / Reverse Proxy is the same F5 Appliance
Any assistance on this is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Greg,
I have been making use of it (https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/) to test my autodiscover and remote
    access.
Like i mentioned it is weird that without doing port mapping from 80/443 to 8080/4443 i was able to pass
the autodiscovery and all but once i changed to the proper steps to do port mapping it stopped working.
and im not using TMG but using a F5 Hardware Reverse Proxy which also happen to be my Load Balancing Appliance.
Is there anyone who can help give me more details if i need 2 VIP for the front end ?
