Front Row 2.12 and Rented Movies

It does not appear that the version of Front Row issued this week "sees" rented movies to play them.
Perhaps so you do not inadvertently start your 24 hour window?

I've now tried this in an Apple Store on other machines and they also have this problem - seems like it is a generic bug and not limited to my machine. Both Applecare support people and Apple Store employees had no direct knowledge of how to report this as a bug to Apple.

• Front Row - Mac Mini - and PowerBook G4, Mac-Mini Multi Media centre.

I will be purchasing a HDTV is the near future and would like to buy a Mac Mini to complement it. ( then sell my DVD player )
The big question are:
-Can I ( using Front Row ) stream AVI data (film) from my PB G4 to my Mac-Mini and watch the content on my new HDTV. ( over AirPort )
-Do I need to buy a new PB that also has Front Row ? ( I hope not )
-What type of video data can I stream ? (iTunes and iPhoto I already know about)
-What about HD DVD's when they come out. Is the drive in the Mac-Mini HD DVD compatible ?( I don't think so )
Please - If you have any other relevant points or question's about the Mac-Mini usage as a multi media centre, Post them here.

I just tried a AVI film and it work's with QT,
although a mpg film did not.
Now that I think about it, I tried a mpg plug-in for
QT and was disappointed.
Has anyone had any success with such a plug-in ?
Another Question:
Must then this AVI data reside in iTunes for
Front-Row to "see" it ? How does this work ?
I guess that when a Blue-Ray drive is added to Apple
products that a HD DVD will not play, or will it play
it but only burn Blue-Ray ?
When shopping for a HDTV I asked about the difference
in Blue-Ray and HD and he told me that the TV will
play both versions.
I hope that the drive will also play both, although
the way I know Apple it will be Blue-Ray only. (
at-least in the beginning ) Remember DVD-R
i would not worry about the blu-ray - HD-DVD thing right now. too much still in the air. once they realize consumers are too un-techie to figure it out and just continue to buy DVD's their will be a standard plus their is already other formats being developed. then if you talking about movies and such my guess is downloaded content is the way apple will go with an itunes movie store but thats my guess.
but yes, HDTV's will play either, its the player. I have a 61" samsung 720p DLP and my new mac mini looks good on it at 1280x720. front row is great. I also watched a ton of HD trailers from quicktime's website and they were amazing.
and from what i have seen from front row it only shows content that is in itunes or iphoto not random folders but i could be wrong, still palying around with it.

• Front Row for Lion works with Movies, Photos, but not with Music!

Hi guys,
what do i do wrong? i installed front row and everything works fine, just no music. i always get the message...
FRONT ROW CANNOT FIND ANY SONGS!
so at first i thought there is something wrong with this app, but then i realized, movies and photos are working perfectly!
maybe someone has a simple solution for that problem?

• Front Row 2.0 and video files stored in iPhoto Library

When i play a photo slideshow in front row 2.0 (don't remember how it was under frant row 1.0), the videos imported besides still pictures in my iPhoto library aren't played, and not even showed as low res thumbnails (as it does when playing a slideshow from iPhoto ; well, i'm not so sure now i write it). Instead, you only have a black screen as long as the duration of the movie !
Would be nice if Front Row could play movie files imported in the iPhoto Library ... or, at least, skip them !
At the present time, i will be forced to remove movie files from my iPhoto and export them to my videos folder... (one more operation to execute manually when importing photos from my p&s camera via iphoto)

Organizing related files with Smart Folders
This also applies for 10.5 Leopard.
If you open Automator (Applications) and choose Library >> Files and folders >> Find Finder items and draw it to the right side of the window. Now you can search the whole computer or just your user folder for example (from the drop down menu). Then you can make further adjustments like find .avi (look at the image)
http://personal.inet.fi/koti/kimi/automator_alias.png
Then you draw the new aliases to the window and choose what folder it saves the aliases too, in my case my Movies-folder (Elokuvat is Movies in finnish). After that you press Run and it saves the aliases. Easy!
The original files are still located inside the iPhoto Library and the Movies-folder just contains the aliases.

• Front Row flipping back and forth

Is there a way to prevent front row from flipping the artwork and the progress bar back and forth every so often. I find it distracting when I am playing music. It catches my eye every time it makes the switch.

My understanding for Apple TV and Front Row 2 having this 'flipping' feature, is to avoid screen burn in. As one can imagine, over the life of the product one is likely to be playing music for a fair amount of total time and a static image would potentially burn in on a Plasma screen (while this is supposed to be practically impossible on an LCD I have seen it happen on really old ones as well).
As a large HDTV can cost thousands, Apple are trying to be helpful (and avoiding future blame).
However while the principal behind this feature is good, and the implementation novel, I don't think it is the most aesthetically pleasing (it is too distracting).
TVs displaying stations which have a 'DOG' (Digitally Originated Graphic) i.e. a permanent station logo on screen are an even bigger problem (as the Apple TV and Front Row currently cannot display TV it is not directly related to them). A different method some TVs have built in themselves is to subtly move the picture down a pixel, left a pixel, up a pixel, right a pixel so as to move the fixed image around the screen. However the movement is so small it only helps a minute bit, at least it is far less distracting.
Note: Stations with 'DOGs' are loathed by AV aficionados.
Considering Apple have picked up other iTunes related features from external developers (e.g. Coverflow), perhaps they should pickup JewelCase from Optical Alchemy see http://www.opticalalchemy.com/products.html this can in iTunes display a rotating CD jewel case with the iTunes artwork and the list of tracks showing. Something along these lines would thinks to its movement avoid burn in and look far more attractive and less distracting.

• Can Front Row use external HDs for Movies?

Hey, I download and store podcasts, vidcasts, and movies on my external USB/firewire HD and I was wondering if Front Row could play them off of there. From what I've read, Front Row accesses movie files from ~/Movies but not elsewhere. Could I perhaps add an alias to the folder with my other movies to trick Front Row into playing them?

No no no...you don't need iTunes, but yes, you can do it. I just posted this in another thread so here it is again...this is how I do it. For short, I put an alias of the folder on the external drive (or just a separate partition on internal HD) into my Movies folder, and it works! Here you go, from http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1837976#1837976:
All you have to do is make an alias of the folder your videos are in and put it in your Movies folder in your Home folder. To do this, click and drag the folder on your external drive where your videos are stored. Hold down Command and Option, then drop the folder in your Movies folder, noting the little arrow indicating you are making an alias.
The same can be done with your iTunes setup if you're clever. Move your iTunes folder out of your Music folder in your Home folder and onto your external drive, then put all your music files inside the iTunes folder in iTunes Music. Then make an alias of your iTunes folder back into your Music folder in your Home folder. Aliases can also be made by selecting a file and choosing Make Alias from the File menu in the Finder.
I have used this setup for awhile, even over a network for a period. Works great. Good luck.
• Does Front Row update playcount (and other attrbutes) in iTunes?

Excuse this question please which I could theoretically test myself, just don't have the resources at hand right now to try it out:
As I understand FR under Tiger uses iTunes to play music. So logically any smart playlists based on 'last played' or 'playcount' attributes will stay up to date?
However, since the new FR (Leopard) handles everything itself my question is, will it also update these iTunes attributes?
My previous quick test, seemed to suggest not. Pretty annoying cos I'm planning to use a MacMini as a mediacenter, connected to the TV and it seems to defeat the object of Front Row if I end up having to play music from iTunes in order to fully utilise my smart playlists.
Cheers,
Rich
PS And why do I have Front Row 1.0 installed on a brand new 10.5 iMac? I thought the Leopard version was FR 2.0 ?

...still don't umderstand why it's version 1.0 though!
The "Front Row" that is in your Applications folder may be "version 1.0" but it's really only a shortcut to the actual Front Row application that's inside your /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder. That's the application that is version 2 now and is actually displaying on your screen. I think Apple added this shortcut for people who don't have an Apple remote so it's easier to open Front Row.

• Moved front row to trash and deleted in error.  How do I get front row back on?

Front row was moved to trash and deleted trash in error.  How do I get front row back?

Front Row is one of the awesome applications that require an OS reinstall to get back.
Or if you don't want to do that you can always use Pacifist. http://www.charlessoft.com/
It essentially lets you pull out specific information from your install disc so you don't have to reinstall everything, just what you need.
Can you still open it with Command+Esc though? You may not have fully removed it.

• Have downloaded movies in the past and no problems. Now I have bought concerts and rent movies and after 45 minutes I lose sound and have updated quicktimeplayer and itunes is updated as per answer when reported to apple. Help.

First time I have used this system but as per sentences above I cannot watch a rented movie or live concert that I have bought without restarting my pc?
Before I never had this problem and starting to get frustrated with Itunes but no problems with music.

• Apple tv and rented movies

How do you get a rented movie over to apple tv or do I have to wait for the apple tv update to come in the mail

I rented a movie from iTunes, and can't get to my AppleTV, I thought I would wait for the 2.0 upgrade to watch, but do not think I will then either , as much as I dislike opop ups, I think they should have one when you rent, letting you know where you can watch (on what)
, found this article (good read)
AppleInsider has a very good article on AppleTV 2.0
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/01/15/firstlook_apple_tv_2_0_and_itunes_movie_rentals_photosvideo.html
Here is a excerpt about the movie rentals
Now, users can rent and buy movies, as well as buy music, music videos, and TV programs directly from the iTunes Store using the simple remote control. While music and video purchases can be synced back to a desktop iTunes library, just like the new WiFi Store on the iPod Touch and iPhone, video rentals ordered on Apple TV can't.
You can rent movies directly from iTunes for playback on iPods, but those can't be synced to the Apple TV. Therefore, you have to choose whether a rental you order is something you want to watch on TV or anywhere else, before you actually rent it. Given that rentals are $3.99 and $4.99, that decision isn't as deeply ponderous as it might initially seem to be.
I am thinking (scary thought) it has to do with the "DVD quality" and HD, vs 640 for iPods?
?/what is DVD quality? and what was "near DVD quality" that was advertised for AppleTV1.0

• Purchased and rented movies not showing upon Apple TV

I can view either my purchased or rented movies on Apple TV. The only thing that shows up on the screen is a large white screen. Any ideas or suggestions?

The white screen indicates an authorisation issue, try restarting your tv and if that is unsuccessful, try de/re-authorising your itms account.

• Purchased and Rented movies not playing

recently any movies that i have downloded form itunes store or movies that i have previously downloaded haven't been playing back.
when i go to choose a movie itunes can see my movies are there but when i play them it comes up with a blank screen ( no audio or visual) and the timer counts down as if the movie is playing. This also happends with movie clips/video clips i steam from the store.
i have removed, repaird and reinstalled itunes 64bit about 6 times, downloaded quicktime and reinstalled it twice. Updated my drivers and made sure everything else was up to date, even did a system restore and still no luck.
i am running windows 8 pro 64bit but this problem has only happend with in the last 2 weeks and i have been running win8 since the start of the year.
please help

• What does err= -50 mean?  It is occurring while downloading TV episodes and renting movies in iTunes.

I am receiving "err= -50" in iTunes while trying to download TV episodes and movie rentals from iTunes.  The downloads stop and will not resume.  Any advice?

Unfortunately it isn't a very meaningful error in terms of diagnosing the issue.
http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-31161.html
Error code -50 is a generic code meaning there's some sort of communication difficulty.
There's many computers and connections between you and those movies, and between your network box and where they are on your computer.
You could try a few general things such as rebooting the computer, or trying the download later.   Are these going to an external drive?
