Front Row a complete failure on new 24" iMac aluminum with Leopard.

One of the features I have enjoyed on my recent Macs, Front Row, is now one of the biggest disappointments on my latest iMac. Each movie will start by showing the usual progress bar extending to the extreme right (2.29 minutes,it would seem,) but then the actual movie clip stops and starts, sometimes in ten second increments. While all this is going on, the progress bar will indicate repeated progress out to the extreme right end of the bar, but it is then followed by the small segments of the clip, sometimes as many as ten segments until it finally reaches the end and puts me out of my misery. Anyone else experiencing this or has Steve singled me out for some rather cruel and unusual punishment ?

The strange thing is that Front Row works just fine on my Apple TV.
The application on the Apple TV is called "Back Row" inside Apple. I don't think this will have anything to do with Front Row on your Mac. (Except for the fact that both might share some music files, movies and pictures from your Mac.) But if your movies files do play on the Apple TV, it might indicate a problem with iTunes, QuickTime or Front Row on your Mac. All of those parts need to work together for Front Row to function correctly.

Does the new 2011 iMac come with a osx lion preinstalled or a osx lion USB drive

I just bought the 17" MacBookPro the other day with Lion preinstalled and wanted to install Lion on my iMac. It makes sense that I should be able to upgrade for free you spend all this money on Apple products, give us apple supporters a break. Maybe this is something that Apple overlooked and in the future there will be a fix.
I read up on forums and I finally called AppleCare they said that I should be able to install Lion on 5 other computers but only if purchased in the store, this doesn't make any sense. I feel like I already purchased a copy and that copy should be able to be installed on another computer. It should be as simple as logging in app store with the same apple ID and it be there to install on my iMac. If apple is trying to make everything user friendly, device syncying and convenient well it's not; this is just something they think of. I refuse to pay $30 for another copy. Fix this issue APPPLE!!!
Because if those who bought computers in July that didn't have Lion preinstalled can obtain a free copy to install in 5 computers. I should be able to do the same with the Lion that I bought preinstalled it's just make sense to me.

  • Front Row is completely unreliable

I bought 2 brand new Intel Mac Minis for my mother... one for her bedroom and one for her living room... so she could enjoy browsing her photos in iPhoto located on her PowerMac in the office.
After spending all this money and touting Apple as a religion, I am embarassed to admit to her I cannot get it to work.
It appears this application is nothing more than Applescript commands being sent to other applications.
All updates are installed for all applications, yet I am experiencing the following problems on an 802.11g wireless network:
    1. photos and music don't seem to be available to the minis running Front Row unless iPhoto and iTunes are already running on the office PowerMac (if this is a requirement, it's just plain silly)
    2. browsing my mother's 30,000+ photo collection results in Front Row stalling for several minutes and eventually giving up, although sometimes it actually does show the albums
    3. if Front Row actually gets to showing iPhoto albums over the network, they are not displayed in alphabetical order, the way I organized them on the PowerMac... they seem to be randomly ordered
    4. none of the hard work I put into organizing albums in iPhoto within folders is apparent to Front Row... it can't see any albums that aren't in the root structure of iPhoto (this is just plain insulting)
    5. Front Row seems to only see my music on the network some of the time
    6. I have no idea what's going on with photo slideshows, why the default music keeps playing, or how to modify anything about them
    7. Why is there no way to browse individual photo thumbnails? My albums contain thousands of pictures. Am I really expected to sit through a slideshow starting at the beginning each time I want to view photo #1014?
Front Row needs to be written as a self-contained application, directly accessing data in iLife applications, and it needs to be debugged and tuned for performance. It also needs to hold up to its competitor, Windows Media Center.

    1) Yes, you must have iTunes and iPhoto running on the server machine (they are the applications that are serving the content)
    2) That's a large number of photos. There are some timeouts that can get triggered while getting the remote information. Its a known issue but unfortunately there isn't a workaround.
    3) They are displayed in the same order as seen in the local iPhoto application
    4) iPhoto doesn't fully support the folders feature with shared albums
    5) ?
    6) If you don't select a song or playlist for an album, the default music will play. You can set this in iPhoto by selecting the album, hitting play and then selecting the music tab. Select the song or playlist and apply settings. This will be the music played for that album in Front Row.
    7) Currently there is no photo browsing feature, only slideshows.

  • Lost FRONT ROW after completing download of OS Mavericks. How can I recover FRONT ROW?

Have eventually managed to download Mavericks on my 2009 macbook ( at 2am!!!). Installation fine BUT I no longer have FRONT ROW on my system. Is this a gremlin?  How can I get it back? All assistance greatly appreciated.

Front Row was withdrawn with the introduction of Lion as it does not officially work with later versions of OS X. Apple prefer you to use AppleTV.
Other threads here suggest a way of having Front Row with Mavericks. I have no idea of they work.

  • Front Row in Lion. Has anyone got it working with iTunes 10.5 yet?

I've got it working with pics and movies by using the method in the link below, but not with the library in iTunes 10.5.
    http://www.cultofmac.com/106874/use-front-row-in-os-x-lion-video-how-to/

Yes I know. I'm very annoyed that Apple have dropped Front Row from Lion, it removes quite a bit of functionality from my iMac. I use it a lot. I've tried Plex, but don't like it at all.

  • Will my new iMac come with Leopard or Tiger?

    Hi,
I'm going to Uni on Monday and want to finally purchase my Mac now that Leopard has been released.
My question is: If I order my new Mac on Monday, will it come with Leopard or Tiger?
In the online store it still states that it will come with Tiger, but maybe this has just not been updated?
If people don't know the answer, would you happen to know an Apple contact email address or telephone number I can call (in the UK) to check prior to ordering?

Are you sure you want to get a Mac with Leopard preloaded?
It may actually not be compatible with some of the software you depend on, and will have no chance of being so (unless the product is updated) because Macs historically have only been able to use the operating system they ship with and newer operating systems, and we are still learning which products need updates for Leopard.
The online store has a phone number in the upper left hand corner:

  • Will the new 3GHz iMac (24") with GeForce 8800 be good for Aperture v2?

    hi all.
I've just seen the specs on the new iMac and I'm interested. I was resigned to buying a Mac Pro but found it difficult to justify the cost because I'm not a professional photographer. the new iMac might be good enough at a much more justifiable cost.
I wonder if anyone has information or opinions regarding the following.
Will the glossy screen be a nuisance? There is stray light in our living room where I use my computer although we do have venetian blinds on both windows. (don't bother suggesting using the computer in another room. this is Hong Kong where space is scarce and expensive.)
Will 3GHz/4GB be significantly faster than my 2GHz/2GB iMac for Aperture operations? (Aperture was not included in Apple's test comparisons)
Will the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS card be beneficial to Aperture use?
Will the FireWire 800 be significantly faster than the FireWire 400? on my iMac, transfers to/from my external SATA disks run at only a dismal 13MB/s rather than the ideal 40MB/s. is it my iMac's limited processor power, or a limiting factor with having only 2GB of RAM and a scad of applications open, or a problem (concerning caching) with Leopard's copying routines?
for future reference, would the Aperture library saved on the internal SATA drive be faster than if it was saved on the external SATA drive connected via FireWire 800?
your input and information would be appreciated (and it's probably going to be a common question).
    sincerely,
    Gregory

My expectation (every workspace is different as are individual perceptions) is that the reflective issues of the iMac's glossy screen would be very tolerable. What many (not all) graphics pros including me find intolerable is the fact that glossy displays add contrast and saturation to images. However many, perhaps most, non-graphics-pros prefer the added contrast and saturation, which is why Apple uses those displays. Each individual must do his/her own side-by-side comparisons and determine personal preference.
Will 3GHz/4GB be significantly faster than my 2GHz/2GB iMac for Aperture operations?
    Yes.
Will the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS card be beneficial to Aperture use?
I believe yes, but that is just a guess since I do not know the card well. Certainly picking an iMac for Aperture usage I would choose the top 24" with the 8800 GS card
Will the FireWire 800 be significantly faster than the FireWire 400?
    Yes.
...for future reference, would the Aperture library saved on the internal SATA drive be faster than if it was saved on the external SATA drive connected via FireWire 800?
Yes. Best IMO will be to have the AP Library on the internal drive but with Referenced Masters on external FW800 drives. The top iMac allows up to 1 TB internal drive size. Since drives slow as they fill, order a large drive and keep it less than half full to optimize operation.
...is it my iMac's limited processor power, or a limiting factor with having only 2GB of RAM and a scad of applications open, or a problem (concerning caching) with Leopard's copying routines?
Pretty much everything impacts AP performance, so the more things you optimize the better. The maximum 4 GB RAM of iMacs, although quite workable, will always be limiting. Good policy is to restart or at least close as many irrelevant applications as necessary prior to an extended Aperture work session.
Steve Weller, builder of the excellent <http://www.bagelturf.com/index.html> Aperture website, discusses speed improvements here:
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1273934&tstart=75>
If you ever do run into performance issues, work to dial in on each of the performance tweaks he discusses.
As an aside, I too like the MBP (ideally 17" matte screen) as preferable to the iMac because of the portability. Unfortunately cost may make that an unacceptable choice, but I cannot overstate the huge benefits of portability.
    Good luck!

  • Can I Wipe a new machine that came with Leopard and install Tiger

I like Leopard at home but at work on our network Leopard does not play well. I have a dual 3.2 Quad Core. Can I do a format and start with a fresh install of Tiger?

My question was answered. I can not wipe my machine clean and go back to Tiger until my IT department decides to embrace the fact that the graphics departments within our company use MAC's and always will. All was well with Tiger and our network or at least we had worked through all of the issues we had and then me and the guy I work with got new machines with Leopard on them. We have one guy in IT that claims to be the go to MAC guy but sometimes I wonder, seems my partner and I know more about MAC's than the IT department but our suggestions when we give them do not seem to be welcome. Thanks for the answers.

  • New 27" iMac (2012) with Thunderbolt Display = Bezel Alignment?

I know the previous generation iMacs (16:10 screen aspect ratio) did not physically align with LED/Thunderbolt displays when placed side-by-side. Since the new iMacs have a matching 16:9 screen, I am wondering if the two screens would physically align properly when used as dual displays?

There is nothing wrong with Apple's refurbished machines, you're assuming they are returned with problems. These machines come with the same 1 year warranty as a new machines and are also eligible for AppleCare the same as a new machine. These machine are tested more than a new machine and if any issues are found they are fixed and re-tested. Apple puts machine into the refurb program for many many reasons, these can be new models were introduced and they're clearing old inventory, or scenarios like a husband bought new machine and the wife made him return it for spending money, or a possible defect. Don't take my word for it though search and you'll see Apple's refurbished machines have a terrific reputation.
However I'm getting from reading your posts you are looking for reasons to not get a Mac and stay with Windows. If that's the case they by all means stay with what you know.

  • New 27" iMac; Glitch with DVD drive

Just got my new refurbished 27" iMac yesterday(my first mac computer ever) and after starting up and playing around few things, I tried to play DVD and it would not accept any DVDs including the setup dvd that came with iMac.
After talking with tech support they asked me to powered down and take out the power plug for few second and restarting the mac solved the issue with DVD.
Not sure how did powering down and restarting helped with DVD in this case. Should I be worried about this DVD drive?
    Thanks,

I guess at least it is now working - I have just bought one myself and just been shipped. First refurb Mac i have ever bought so fingers crossed...

  • How do I access my hotmail account in the new Mail that came with leopard?

I just got leopard, but it won't find hotmail with any of the servers... how do I get it to work?

One option available is to covert your HotMail account to HotMail Plus, a fee based service that now supports POP3 protocols, which you can access from virtually any mail client. The POP3 option only very recently became available to HotMail users, and is only available to those with HotMail Plus accounts. Setup in Mail would used these values:
    • pop3.live.com inbound server identifier
    • smtp.live.com outbound server identifier
    SMPT authentication is required.

  • The new Front Row should take a backseat.

The Front Row on Leopard looks better, except for the fade-in/out effect instead of the desktop-being-pushed-back effect.
But its functionality has gone down. You can no longer resume movies or even leave the music on when you quit front row...
Is there anyway to get that functionality back on the new Front Row?? Its Apple, we should have everything, the looks and the works!
Its also a no-go on the feedback to apple... They don't have an option for Front Row.
If Apple people are reading this... you know what to do in 10.5.2!

Front Row appears to be a new application. The Front Row version supplied with remote control equipped Intel Macs seemed to call upon iTunes (and thence Quicktime) to do its heavy lifting. Thus iTunes helper would keep music playing after Front Row quit. The other feature you didn't mention you lost was that Front Row would play music wirelessly via Air Tunes and an Airport Express when it used iTunes. It also fails to use an external monitor for DVDs.
The new Front Row can be legally used by owners of Mac gear that doesn't have a remote control. This is a great leap forward for those who don't as yet have an Intel Mac, or who have a Power Mac. Plus Front Row now plays DVDs without invoking iTunes. It even plays DVDs from your hard drive (complete with cover art, if you add a jpg to the TS_Video folder). This is a great advantage for people living in the majority of countries where iTune Store does not offer movies at all. It would not surprise me to see further upgrades of Front Row fairly soon. Personally, I love it.

  • Front Row not working on new MacBook Pro

    Hello all,
I cannot get Front Row to work on my new MacBook Pro. I've confirmed that my Apple Remote works using iChat's video preview to see the flashing IR transmitter. I've pressed Cmnd+esc also. I've even tried to double-click on the System >> Library >> CoreServices >> Front Row app to no avail. If someone could help me, I would appreciate it. Many thanks in advance.
2.2 GHz Core2 Duo MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   4 GB RAM

Front Row doesn't usually open if you double-click the application in the CoreServices folder, so that's not unusual. The one troubleshooting step I might try, before calling AppleCare Support since your computer is new, would be to use the Accounts System Preferences to create a new user. Log out and log in as the new user. Can the new user open Front Row with command-esc or the remote? If so, then your original user has a preference file problem. If not, then you may need to re-install Front Row and/or Mac OS X. If your Mac is less than 90 days old, I'd call AppleCare Support and get some help from them to do that (also so they're made aware that a new computer required that in case there's an issue at the factory).
