HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
I'm hoping I'm close on this... open System References/Front Row/Sound Preference Panel. There is a new option under the “Sound Effects” tab to enable or disable playing Front Row sound effects.
Hopefully you can at least Mute the sound ...

  • Front Row crashes when loading DVD

Hey, I hope someone can help with this, I am trying to use front row to play a DVD, but after a short while front row closes. Now, as soon as i tell it to play the DVD, when it tries to load it, it just turns off. There is no unexpected closure error message or option to report or anything, it just acts like I closed it. And help or info is appreciated, thanks.

I've actually been having the same problem.
First of all, my DVD player constantly takes forever to load a DVD and/or spits it out; then more recently, Front Row without fail will crash when a DVD ends. Even worse, lately, it won't even play the DVD after repeated attempts to start it.
It's extremely annoying and I can't figure out what to do.

  • Mysterious music in my Front Row

I'm not a huge Front Row user -- I pretty much just use it for DVD viewing. One day I explored a bit more and checked out the "Music" section, and found a bunch of music I didn't recognize, especially considering the titles were in Japanese, and I don't speak Japanese. Check it out:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/endquote/2124583368/
I have no idea how that stuff got there. (I also have no idea how to take a screen shot of Front Row -- that's an iPhone pic.)
I have two Macs, a newish dual-core MacBook Pro, and an old Powerbook G4, which acts as a music server. I have an Airport Extreme providing network access to everything and two Airport Expresses for Airtunes use. The wireless network is using WPA password protection, and I just changed the passwords tonight. None of this music shows up in iTunes on either Mac. The only other devices on the network are an iPhone and a Wii.
What's going on here? Is there a security issue? Am I hallucinating? It's just so strange.

He he! I haven't actually seen a screen shot of that yet, but you're not the first to report this issue. Some people have resolved this issue by deleting the Front Row preferences. You can find the file in this path:
    <Macintosh HD>/Users/<YourUsersShortName>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.frontrow.plist.
You'll need to log out and log back in after deleting the file. For some reason, your iTunes store preference has changed to the Japanese store.

  • OS 10.6.5, mac mini, Front Row, and Bose V20 don;t play nice

Since updating to 10.6.5 my 2010 mac mini using HDMI output to the Bose system will play one ripped video, then won;t play another without locking up (stuttering without audio) and then if I repair privileges, turn everything off and back on, and hold my tongue just right, the movie that wouldn;t play works fine without a lot of rhyme or reason... any ideas? when the audio strats acting up front row may not even play music without backing all the way put and then going back in...
(the log on privilege repair is pretty long, whereas before 10.6.5 it was almost nil)...
    Thought?

Since the first post I think I have narrowed the issue to some kind of handshake between the mini and the Bose on the HDMI port... didn;t have an issue like this with OS 10.6.4. Might have to resort to Mini-DVI to HDMI and send the audio optically...

  • Front Row problems with NAS drive (2 of them)

OK... having 2 problems with Front Row...
    Background
First, I should say I'm new to Mac OS X, had early Macs, but went PC a long time ago.
I burned all of my music from CDs (I own) on my WinXP box, then copied them over to a NAS drive for easy access between computers.
The NAS is an Infrant ReadyNAS. The drive is shared on my network. The keychain app has the password information to the share. Though I should note, it doesn't matter if I remove the password from the share.
The ReadyNAS has a nice feature whereas it will act as an iTunes server, this is enabled. I do not have AFP or NFS enabled on the NAS since I regularly access the drive on WinXP machines. All access is SMB/CIFS.
I mounted the drive and created a link between the iTunes home folder and the network share. Thus, iTunes automatically mounts the share when started and seems to be comfortable that the files are accessible.
    Everything works fine in iTunes.
    Not so in Front Row.
    Problem #1
Front Row will not read the "Shared Music." When I go this route in Front Row, it finds the NAS iTunes Music Server, but insists on being given a password to access the "Share." Of course, you can't enter a password.
Again, everything works just fine in iTunes. It shows the server fine under "Shared," and immediately brings up all music and plays it readily.
Just doesn't work in Front Row.
    Problem #2
Front Row stopped auto-mounting the NAS share which is linked to the iTunes music folder. iTunes will mount it, if it is not mounted already when it first is asked to play a song. Up until this morning, Front Row would automount it too. This AM, after getting the Apple security update, Front Row would not automount the share. Note, if I automount the share manually, or go to iTunes (which properly automounts) before launching Front Row everything works fine from Front Row.
It took me a second to figure this out, as Front Row's terribly missleading error message is, you are not authorized to play this song - authorize it (well, that is the point of the wordy message). Of course, this confused me, since these are not iTunes store songs and of course, this worked fine yesterday.
Anyway, what is really happening, (I surmise) is it is not automounting the share and cannot read the song, and seemingly defaulted to the assumption it is a DRM problem.
I have to say, this is one out of the old Microsoft handbook. Missleading error messages and broken functionality from (it would seem) rushed out security updates.
I'm gonna have to tip my hat... some of those Microsoft developers that made the move from Redmond to Cupertino brought their game with them!
    LOL
Anyway... anyone that can offer a hand would make my wife very happy. She likes Front Row... and now she has to start iTunes to make Front Row work. Sheesh.
Thanks in advance for the help.
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Nah

    Hi,
same thing here: I have 3 LCD-screens (30,26,20 Apple Displays) on two graphic-cards (ATI X1900XT, NVDIA7300GT). Front Row does not display any pictures or movies. Menus work like they should, Music also plays fine, but images are not shown. It only shows a white screen on the main screen (30") and the other two are dimmed to black. If i type ESC i get back to the menus...
    Any hint? Regards - Peter

  • DVD Regions, External Drives and Front Row

    Hi everyone,
I've done a fair bit of looking through forums and although the topic comes up all the time my question has not really been satisfactorily answered.
I know that there is no way to make the drives in Macs region free. Having DVDs from multiple regions and living in Australia where region-locked players violate our Trade Practices Act, this upsets me.
A possible way around this is for my Mac to use an external DVD drive that can be region-unlocked. However this prompts the question of whether the region change count is only on the firmware of the drive, or is it in the actual software?
Now most posters recommend using VLC media player as it supposedly ignores regions. However, I really like Front Row and I really want to play my DVDs through that, rather than VLC.
    So my question is:
Can Front Row play several regions of DVDs through an unlocked external DVD drive in much the same way as it would work with the internal DVD drive?
I am willing to try some minor hacks to initially get things working, but in the end I just want to insert whatever DVD I want into a DVD drive and watch it effortlessly in Front Row.
    Thanks for reading

I did that, but some of my videos don't play now.
When put on the Internal Harddrive they seem to work fine, but when put on the external they don't work.
I have and Intel-Mac Core 2 duo and is there a codec pack that will allow me to play ALL the formats on Intel Mac?
    Thanks,
    Shubs

  • Front Row Disappears

I have Front Row (1.3.1) running on an early 17-inch Intel iMac on 10.4.11, except that it is randomly disappearing. I’ve searched the message boards and Apple’s posted information without much success.
When the computer has been off for at least an hour and then booted up, Front Row works via the keyboard shortcut as well as with the remote. Anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes later Front Row won’t launch using either mode. And, the option under the System Preferences pane for Security to “Disable remote control infrared receiver” also disappears.
I have reinstalled the entire OS and applications from the ground up (wiped the drive clean). None of the applications are out of the ordinary (Adobe CS and MS Office 2008, Canon print driver, Canon scanner driver, and the rest is standard Apple apps). Prior to the clean install of everything the system wouldn’t update to Front Row 1.3.1 because it didn’t think the iMac had the infrared feature.
I don’t know when this disappearing act showed up in terms of OS or firmware updates.
    Any assistance would be welcomed.

I'm not sure what to say. The fact that Front Row stops working and the option to disable the IR receiver in the Security System Preferences seem to happen at the same time would indicate to me that the IR receiver is not available to Mac OS X. I don't remember ever hearing of an application or utility that was interfering with the receiver. Some people claim that florescent lights interfere with IR signals, but (and that has resolved issues for people here), but that wouldn't interfere with the Mac's internal connection to the IR receiver.
If it continues to happen, you might want to take the computer into an Apple retail store or local Apple Authorized Service Provider for a more sophisticated check-up.

  • Front Row poor iTunes compatibility

Hi - hoping someone can shed some light on this.
I have an iMac (Latest OS and fully updated) running iTunes. All works great. My iTunes library is shared.
I also have a Mac-Mini which I use as a media centre under my HDTV. (Latest OS and fully updated). On this I run eye-TV, no known issues and use Front Row to access my iTunes Library on my iMac above.
I also have an Apple TV- again, accessing the iTunes Library on my iMac.
*The Issue* - I have a problem whereby Front Row does not seem to play the movies very well at all from my Mac-Mini. For example, I have a movie file, which I created, in iMovie 8 and shared to iTunes - This created a movie 106MB in size - 3.58 minutes long.
The movie plays great on the iMac where its stored.
The movie plays great on the Apple TV. Streamed from iTunes (Not synched)
The movie struggles on the Mac Mini with Front Row. It keeps buffering and pausing.
The symptoms appear on a number of movies played through Front Row. Some that have been ripped from my own DVD's and anything above 40 or 50MB created in iMovie 8.
Would love to hear from anyone with an answer or explanation. (Note, I have tried using both wired (GigaBit) and wireless networks. I do not not believe this is network bandwidth related. Infact my Apple TV is wireless and works perfectly.
Note - iTunes and Front Row are the current and up to date versions as is my OS. (I believe there was a patch to resolve such issues in previous versions.)
    Thanks in advance

Looking at the picture on the bottom of that other discussion board, I have the exact same problem. All that font stuff you mentioned to work around the problem is a bit intimidating, so I'll just live with the occasional bug. And if I close and open up the program, it's fixed anyway. I just hate seeing a brand new pristine computer not act quite so pristine.
    But thanks.

  • Front Row 1.0.1

Software Update has Front Row 1.0.1. After installation it seems to access items faster than before. Do others experience this or other improvement?
I think I noticed another change. iTunes and iPhoto now automatically quit when leaving them in Front Row. I think they remained open before.

Probably because having them work as a shell makes a lot of sense. One of my favorite things I can do with Front Row because it acts like a shell is open iTunes and select a playlist or Party Shuffle & put in the music I want to hear. I can then begin playback & enable Front Row, selecting Now Playing. I now see the currently playing song full screen on the display. If it simply read the data, that wouldn't be possible. Also, I rely on playlists that use playcount & last played information. Acting as a shell means songs played are properly updated with that information. It also means I can use the AirTunes feature of iTunes to send my audio to remote speakers.
Where Front Row doesn't act as a shell is with the Videos section. I think this is a serious missing feature, since it means TV-Shows, music videos & other videos I have in iTunes don't have playcount or last played information updated.

  • Coverflow and Front Row display the WRONG artwork

I have tried all the answers I can find and also some more in depth ones as well....
I have made sure there is only ONE artwork in the 'get info' of the track (the correct one)
I have deleted the Album art folder (download and local) in the iTunes music folder
I have deleted cache and preferences where I could find them for both iTunes and Front Row
    I have restarted!
YET the same **** WRONG artwork still shows in the COVERFLOW and when using FRONT ROW to access your music with the remote!
Can't find anything about this from Apple.... Surely this is an easy fix for Apple......?
The last changed artwork (by modify date) is the one that coverflow and Front row should use...???
iTunes displays the correct artwork, 'get info' shows there is only ONE artwork (the correct one)
I have deleted everything I can think off and yet Coverflow and Front Row still display the old, incorrect artwork! and get this... if I delete the artwork completely, so it is the default "no artwork" icon that itunes displays Frontrow and coverflow STILL display the old incorrect one!
Reading these forums I am amazed that something as basic and integral to the iTunes/iLife experience has been so blatently ignored and left to the users/forums to muddle through!
Come on Apple! get your act together! this is crazy...
I am NOT the only one with this problem!
    ANYWAY.... any advice?

    Me Also.
Right now I only notice it on one album.
Both the song playing and the artwork in the info box are correct, it's only coverflow that is wrong.

  • Doesn't continue to play when I leave Front Row

In Front Row 1, I can remember, iTunes would continue to play the songs I listened to in Front Row, even if I leave the Front Row app.
Well, now the music is interrupted and I have to fnd the songs in iTunes.
I guess this is a bug, huh...

I guess I've gotten spoiled by more productive, helpful discussions on this and other support forums, but I thought that thread was absolutely nauseating. The gall that several posters there have to tell others who are unhappy with Front Row's performance that they're just using it wrong blows my mind. The discussion is about features that no longer work as they did in an earlier version of Front Row or have been taken away completely. Yet they refer to those earlier features as "wrong" and act as if people have no right whatsoever to be unhappy with certain aspects of FR2's performance.
    Unbelievable.

  • Three front row gripes

While the new front certainly is sexy and smooth (no more several seconds transitions between menu alternatives), I've three annoyances to which I've managed to find no solution. Perhaps you fellas, the very heart and brain of the Apple fanbase, can help me out, or at least explain to me why these very important features have been removed or changed.
    1. No resume function in movies: While watching iTunes music videos give me the option to resume the video from where I left off before, watching anything in my movies folder does not. This is incredibly confounding, if Apple configured the new front row to work in this way. Why would I want the option to resume watching a music video from where I left off, but not a movie?
    2. The fast forward/rewind behaviour: is just terrible. The single click-and-hold forwards/rewinds far too slowly for most rewinding needs, the click-and-hold-and-click-again seems bugged (while the forward/rewind bar shows the movie position moving, the actual picture and the actual position in the movie only changes every half minute of rewinded/forwarded time, or so), and the click-and-hold-and-click twice and the single click (to jump) are both only useable for quickly skipping ahead for several minutes or more.
    3. No moving previews: Not much to say besides the obvious. Whatever happened to moving previews?
So, if anyone knows of any solutions for any of these problems, I'll be a happy frontrower. If no solutions exist, then it would be interesting to know the rationale behind these implementations.

I second your gripes, but without your restraint; Front Row is a freakin' mess!
Okay, this really isn't an answer because only Apple can tell us why they all got stoopid and screwed up a perfectly lovely piece of software (I suspect it has something to do with the fact that FR now looks and acts suspiciously like the Apple TV interface and they probably use similar code so the programmers only update one code set).
However, it is important that we tell Apple, so: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
You should just send them your thoughtful and very well written post.
In the meantime, I have stumbled upon another thread that suggests replacing Front Row version 2 with Front Row version 1.3.1. Now, let me be clear: I HAVEN'T TRIED IT YET, but it looks like it might be worth a try.
    Here's the thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1251292&tstart=0
Super important: Before you do this, read the ENTIRE thread through and practice safe computer hacking. Locate the Front Row 2 app in System>Library>Core Services and copy it to a safe place (desktop always seems a good place) before you try replacing it with version 1.3.1. That way, if the hack doesn't work, you can put version 2 back and restart.
If you're not the hacking type, which I admit can be scary, please send Apple your feedback. If enough of us suggest the changes, they might fix it. It worked with the semi-transparent menu bar, which, now that I've seen it, I wonder what all the fuss was about.

  • Front Row Movie Player Problem

I have lots of movies that are all in .avi format. I watch them regularly on my computer with VLC, but I can not seem to get them to play in Front Row. I can find the movies that I want to watch, but when I click to play them the screen is blank and there is no sound. The length of the movie, however, does appear and it acts as if the movie is being played. Is there any way to use VLC as the movie program in Front Row?

Try the Front Row forum http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1164

  • Is there a way to open Front Row without the remote?

I wonder, is there some keyboard shortcut that will open front row?
I ask because a while ago I was about to force-quit an application(cmdoptesc), and then I cancelled(esc) that and toggled to another application's window(cmd+tab), etc., all of this using only the keyboard. But because of the application that wasn't working right, things got slow, and after waiting a couple of seconds for the other window to appear... Fron Row just appeared in front of me!!!
I don't know if it was some keyboard shortcut that i accidentally pressed, or just a bug. Does enyone know?

    Command + Escape
    arrow keys
    return
    and escape to bail
    good luck
