Front Row alternative

Hey all,
For anyone interested, Equinux has an alternative to Front Row called Media Central. Click here to download.

TY Jersey man.
It works nice and smoothly espc. when connected to a tv as 2nd monitor it just needs a few more channels.
Tried the http://tv4all.com/portal.htm?http://tv4all.com/television/index.html?http://tv4a ll.com/television/13.htm and there is much more and most works with VLC instead of Windows media player.

  • How can I use apple remote with Mountain Lion? Any Front Row alternative?

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
All great except for my Apple Remote control.
Before, I could effectively control my iMac media with Apple Remote by using Front Row (music, photos, videos, good integration with iTunes and iPhoto).
Now, as I understand, Front Row is expired.
So, my Apple remote still works but with very limited options (just music, forward, backward and volume), and it's a real pity.
Any of you Guys know how to restore Front Row?
Otherwise maybe suggest an alternative (sth similar, should allow iMac media control by Apple Remote)?
So far I tried to restore all Front Row files by a Time Capsule Snow Leopard backup (as indicatred on some other Communities).
To restore was easy, but then, no way to launch it.
    Any advice will help!
    Thanks in advance/all the best.
    Marco

Thanks Klaus1 for your prompt answer, although I went again through a dated discussion.
I also got the feeling that somehow they want to push Apple TV..
But, respectfully speaking towards our Friends at Apple, is it fair to promise what you don't deliver?
I have choosen apple because I percive it's different.
    At currently published link: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC377Z/A/apple-remote
    they do promote the following:
    Apple Remote with Mac
The Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It works with Front Row - a menu-based, full-screen interface - to make accessing the digital content on your Mac as simple as navigating your iPod. When you press the Menu button, your desktop fades and the sleek, Front Row interface takes its place, to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Videos folder and your DVDs. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slide show, a home video that you made in iMovie, even a film trailer.
Compatible with Apple products introduced in 2005 or later that have a built-in infrared (IR) receiver. Not compatible with MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Cost for this is 15£ (19€).
Now, I have iMac and Mac Book Pro (no retina display) both with Mountain Lion installed, and I understand both of them are not compatible with Front Row.
Actually I adore apple tv and I got 2 at home nicely working on 2 different TVs.
So I accomplished twice their wish of selling this product to me.
Why shall they deceive me (and many others, as I read) by killing a still promised service?
Should I read all forums before buying a trusted-brand-product like apple, to ensure that id does what declared?
Don't get me wrong, I'm an enthusiast user of the whole apple family, since many years, and still I am.
Just politely complaining for this decision, which creates to Many an easy avoidable disservice.
    Cheers
    Marco

  • Kiosk-like Finder/Front Row Alternative?

    Hello,
I'm working on a geek-project for personal use and wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Basically, I'm taking an older G4/667 with S-Video out, no monitor (well, a TV, but no good for actually viewing Finder, navigation, etc.) and my only navigation tool is an Apple Remote and Mira (software) - basically, trying to create a very oldschool/simple "media center" out of it.
Front Row chokes on this machine, and alternative tried thus far with no success are:
    - CenterStage
    - MediaCentral
    - iTheater
    - mMedia
So, I'm ruling out "Front Row" like apps 'cause they're just not working. What I'm looking for now is an alternative for Finder that displays the navigation large enough that it's useable on a TV screen. Something that I can navigate finder and launch media files?
I dunno. Maybe I'm wasting my time, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears!
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Elgato's EyeTV software is spec'ed to work with a G4/500 or above. And it has a full screen menu mode that works with the Apple remote. Converting Quicktime to a format playable on that machine without choppiness is going to be the hardest part, as it takes twice as long as the length of the video to encode MPEG-2s on a G4/733. So imagine something a bit longer, even if you max out the RAM.

  • Front Row Alternatives?

Any recommendations? Not unhappy with Front Row but would like TV integration (formy EyeTV DTT), better format support, weather and RSS intagration. Somthing like XBMC plus TV.
    -CenterStage / Backstage
    -iTheater
    -MediaCentral
    -mMedia
    -any others??

I find the AppleTV a great alternative to Front Row. Its ability to catalog TV shows alphabetically by series title is better than Front Row, which only gives you an alphabetical list by show title. Also with AppleTV you can change the listing to be by order modified.
Of course you have to connect it to an HD-TV, but as such it really presents itself well.
MediaCentral is nice, but it isn't as forgiving of your data being an external hard drive as the AppleTV or Front Row, and can result in slow display.
The Mac Mini you almost have to have videos on an external hard drive as you are limited by the size of the 2.5" hard drive that comes with it.
Edit: Elgato has just released a Turbo H.264 external USB dongle that encodes video into AppleTV compatible format up to 4 times faster than a typical Intel Core 2 Duo machine. I'm getting one in the mail soon. Can't wait to see the speeds it gets!

  • IMessage vs iChat, Front Row

I understand that Mountain Lion has removed iChat from its software, but would iMessage allow you to video chat with the same contacts as iChat had? Also, how do you view your iChat contacts as a list in iMessage (basically how can I see who is online?).
Are there any Front Row alternatives out there that are basically the same thing as Front Row?

    Hi,
System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars
This Preferences Pane  may well list your "iChat Accounts" and have them Enabled for Messages.
Of they are  they should appear in Messages menu > Preferences > Accounts.
They may need to be Enabled here.
IF you have several AIM or Jabber Names and IDs or you have the Bonjour Account Enabled then the defaults is for a Combined List (See Window Menu  > Buddies (CMD + 1) )
You can unlink the Buddy lists by going to Messages > Preferences > General Section and unticking the line about gathering all the accounts in to one list.
This will result in the Window Menu list all the Non iMessage Accounts with their own CMD + #
As you have probably worked out the "Messages Window' is both Chat window and interface.
It has a New Message icon (Square box with Pencil) top left
After you use this a Blue + iCon appears top right
Using this gives you access to Contacts (Formerly Address Book) directly, Groups in the Contacts List and Buddies
This Buddies drop down is all your Buddies from all your Accounts that are On Line.

  • Is there an alternative to Front Row in lion?

I understand Front Row is no longer available in Lion. Is ther an appropriate alternative? I find Front Row a much better interface for playing music than iTunes, as it matches the interface on the ATV.

You are not alone with FrontRow, however if you copy the following back from your SL installation it seems to work
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BackRow.framework
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework
    /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.RemoteUI.plist
    /Applications/Front Row.app
    (Caveat installer - YMMV )

  • Hardware alternative to Front Row for pre-iSight G5 iMac?

Hey there, I know I've asked previously if there was a version of Front Row available for G5 iMacs that didn't come w/ the iSight built-in. Since I'm considering replacing my PC altogether with this machine (and getting a MacBook for mobile use), I'm really only missing one thing... We use the PC for pushing video out to our TV for edited TV shows or movies. We have an ATI Remote Wonder which uses a USB-connected RF remote to play, pause, skip, etc. Does such a device exist for the pre-isight model imacs? Essentially I'd like to be able to play a DVD or a movie in VLC and be able to pause, skip back, etc. without going to the machine. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
    -Mike

As it turns out the Remote Wonder software for Mac did just about everything I needed it to! Anyone looking for a somewhat close match to front row (or at least remote control) should look for a used Remote Wonder RF remote - so far it's working great. (Already had it so no extra dough either!) I like this Mac more and more every day.

  • Front Row Sharing - Some TV shows not showing up

    Hi all,
I have a problem with iTunes' shared libary - it only shows a subset of TV shows within iTunes. I have a Mac Pro in my den, which hosts a pretty large itunes library (about 750GB), of which 350GB are TV shows I've either bought from iTunes or ripped from DVD. The machine is running 10.6 and iTunes is fully up to date. Everything works as you'd expect on the Mac Pro, and Front row can see all the videos iTunes can see.
In our bedroom we have a fairly recent Mac Mini. If i use iTunes ->iTunes sharing, all the titles show up correctly and I an watch any TV show.
However, if we use the sharing feature in front row on the mac mini, only a subset of TV shows appears - and infuriatingly it's not even 100% reliable which items will fail to show - but it is about 90% reliable, which is even more frustrating, as it's clearly not totally random. The shows most likely to be effected seem to be the ones added in the last few months.
I've also tried running front row on different clients on the same LAN - both my wife and my Macbook pros do the same, as does an iMac in our kitchen, so it seems to me to be either a problem which effects Front Row generally, or a fault on the iTunes server Mac Pro. Is my library simply too big for the Front Row sharing feature to work correctly? If so - this is ridiculous!?
I've looked into alternative clients for the Mac Mini, like Mediacentral, which doesn't seem to support sharing of iTunes videos, and also Plex which again doesn't appear to support this, but is frankly so complex it's hard to tell - if it will support seamless iTunes sharing of all content, I'd be happy to give it a go - but it doesn't look like it does.
Preferably there would just be a fix like deleteing some iTunes cache files or something on the Mac Pro - I've had a sniff about the iTunes XML file, and compared the data of some of theTV shows which turn up to some of those that don't and they all look identical, schema wise, so I'm none the wiser.
All machines tested are totally up to date, OS/iTUnes wise..
I haven't managed to find anything on the internet about this, which leads me to think it's probably an obscure issue with my iTUnes installation, rather than a problem with library size, since I'm sure many other people have bigger libraries than this....
    Any help greatly appreciated!

I have the same issue. My home shared library can all be seen on my iPhone or my Apple TV 3rd Gen but not on my ipad. Only some movies and tv shows show up. Also. Many of the TV shows are all mixed up. Episodes shows up in different series and all mix up. All those issues only on the iPad, on other devices, all seems fine.

  • How do I install Front Row for my MacBook Air with Lion OS

I need to know how to simply install Front Row onto my MacBook Air with Lion OX 10.7.4. Please help.

  • Using Airport Express to listen DVD via Front Row and Optical Out

I want to find out if this is possible:
I currently have Macbook Black Core 2 Duo. I enjoy watching DVDs using Front Row. The DVI video cable goes to the projector which is at the back of my room. Since the Macbook is close to the projector, I have to run optical audio cable to the 5.1 Dolby Digital home theater sound system at the front of my room.
I am interested in the AirPort Express because it can play iTunes wirelessly and use optical output to hook up the stereo system.
The question I want to know is if it's possible to connect Airport Express optical output into my Dobly Digital sound system so I can watch and listen DVD movies via Front Row? If not, any other alternatives? When searching through topics, it seems the users said Rogue Amoeba has a lag issue. Even I am not sure it can do optical output capabilites. Any thoughts. Thanks!

KonradL, Welcome to the discussion area!
To stream non-iTunes music to the AirPort Express (AX) you need Airfoil.

  • Front row on yosemite

I'm trying to use the Menu button from the remote control and it doesn't display anything, the rest of the buttons work ok but Front Row doesn't show up. Is it disable on Yosemite system?

You can find an alternative in the Mac App Store: nessMediaCenter.
The MAS version does not offer any internet content (like movie trailers), but at its support web page you can download other versions including a demo. And these versions are newer...

  • Front Row on other infrared laptops?

I have a Powerbook Pismo with infared. Is this usable for front row?
    and if so...
I know it won't install on this older model, but is there a way to get this app over to it over to it, or is this considered pirating?

    imac G5 1.9-10.4.8/Pismo(G4'd)550-10.4.8/B&W G3(G4'd)500-10.3.9 & 9.2/Ipod mini

Front Row is Apple software that has a license only for the computer it was purchased with. Copying it from one computer to another would be software piracy.
When Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is released this spring, it will include Front Row for all computers. So, you may be able to get Front Row legally this way. However, the system requirements for Mac OS X 10.5 have not been released yet, it's possible you won't be able to run it on a G3-based computer even if it has a G4 upgrade.
You might consider using a third-party alternative like .

  • Front Row 'Sources' not finding media server

    Hi all!
I use my Mac Mini as a media server for my apple TV and all my computers/macs with iTunes.
Everything works fine apart from Front Row on my MacBook that only seems able to find my local machine under sources.
    Any ideas?

You are not alone. I am experiencing the same problem.
We have consolidated all of our music and videos (much if it purchased via iTunes) onto a NAS media server. Our Macs have no problem seeing the server either from within iTunes or QuickTime Player. Yet, trying to find it using Front Row is impossible. There are no menu source options other than one's own mac or, alternatively, the iTunes Server mothership.
Either this is an oversight in the way Front Row was written, or more likely, it's some Draconian control issue decided in Cupertino.
For anyone who's acquired a lot of content (all legally, too, I might add) and stores it externally of his/her mac, this issue makes Front Row useless.
